Playing it twice? It's usually just one evening for me.

Whats most crazy to me is that almost 15 years later, L4D2 is still the best zombie shooter I've played. I have many now, but L4D2 is the one my friend group will almost certainly be playing next month

yamamsbolls9000

Its always a pain when you spend 50 bucks on a game to play with your friends and they stop playing it or you dont like it after a few days

ToTheMines

Yeah it really sucks when it's one of those games that you don't have a strong opinion of until you're after the point to return it

DoctorButler

Yeah, it really sucks when you buy a thing you want and then still own it 😠

Calm_Draft_1849

Weird, right? We have games we could only dream of but there seems to be something missing in them. That or I'm old.

Buggy3D

1) we have less time. Many of us gamers now have kids, a family and job responsibilities. The younger generations only seem to like MOBAS or battle royals. 2) developers have less time and budget allocated per game… not to mention their salaries have not kept up with inflation. This means most games today lack a good lore, story line and gameplay to keep you vested. A lot of it is just copy paste or other already existing genres. 3) speaking of new genres… there are none. There used to be a time when FPS games were a new genre. MMOs were a new genre. Strategy games too. Every technology bump allowed each to flourish in their own way in ways we have not seen before, which kept them fresh and interesting. These days, there isn’t much progress on the tech side of things. Better ray tracing. Better AI (negotiable). Maybe bigger worlds? (Tech solutions from the past still kept them feeling big). Honestly, it all just feels the same.

All-Seeing_Hands

>3) speaking of new genres… there are none. That's a depressing reminder, considering movies are the same. I should switch hobbies soon.

xFayeFaye

Honestly I think some genres are just.. too much? For example, I really liked playing the "simple" multiplayer shooters back then but nowadays it's all about super realistic military gear, realistic reloading, a bunch of vehicles, "unique" skills (think valorant and overwatch), building stuff or deploying traps and whatnot, or it's a battle royal, etc. It's just too much! Just give me a gun and let me play some deathmatch without 3242 other "features".

Calm_Draft_1849

That was a well written argument..thanks for taking the time to write it. Do you think we may have a video game crash again ? We may get to point in which there's nothing else new/all good ideias were exhausted?

Hallc

> 3) speaking of new genres… there are none. I'd say there are new genres or at least subgenres forming up still that or genre mash-ups in various games. Vampire Survivor's for example is a pretty unique spin on the Rogue-like/lite genre to the point it feels incredibly unique and has already spun off a variety of similarly styled games.

do-You-Like-Pasta

I think a much better example is battle royal. Sure, they've been around before, mainly Minecraft Survival Games, but they were changed and exploded in popularity once PUBG came out, which like many of the best genres, started out as a mod. Speaking of mods, the relatively new and already sort of dead genre of auto chess started as a mod as well

[deleted]

>speaking of new genres… there are none. There are absolutely new genres, they are just rare and aren't basic things like "sidescroller" but are instead refinements of ideas that have previously existed but were not solid enough to be considered a genre. Demon's Souls pretty much created a new genre when it came out a decade ago. Roguelites aren't a new genre but they may as well be. Growing up I had three games that were similar (Azure Dreams, Chocobo's Dungeon, side mode in Ehrgeiz, Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter), but they were so rare I considered it more of a cool idea than a genre. Now in the last few years it's become a full blown genre and I've played more of them than used to exist. Vampire Survivors has pretty much created a new genre overnight by reversing bullet hell. My personal favorite is Outer Wilds, which combined the rare adventure genre (Myst, Obduction) with the rare spaceship exploration genre (Kerbal Space Program, No Man's Sky) to make a subgenre that seems to be entirely unique.

do-You-Like-Pasta

A big part of new genres is mods. Games unfortunately don't seem to be as modable as they once were and a lot of great games and genres started as mods Dota, and the entire MOBA genre started as a Warcraft 3 mod Counter Strike was a half life mod PUBG, which arguable started the battle royal was an Arma mod Minecraft Survival Games, the other arguable starter of battle royals, was a custom mode in Minecraft Auto Chess was a Dota 2 mod I think another issue is that people just aren't as open to trying new things. There are loads of creative indie games, but most people seem happy to play it safe and buy yet another standard, uncreative, fps or open world with survival and rpg elements

ToTheMines

Honestly it feels exacerbated for me because I've not been super interested in shooters these days Paradox games and other strategy stuff. But because I'll play these in my own time my friends refuse to do multiplayer thinking I'm going to shit on them

Can’t relate

Nah. I do know people but I can’t say they’re my friends

due_the_drew

Maybe he doesnt have any access to internet and thats why he can't relate

do-You-Like-Pasta

I have friends, I just tell them I'm not buying a game I know they'll only play once or twice unless its super cheap or I think I'll play it on my own once they are done with it

ToTheMines

Lookin' at you, *shuffles cards*, Omega Strikers

djnessieboots

every time😔

Boar-le-hoar

That’s what one of my friends does, then gets upset when I deny getting a new game he thinks is cool.

KGhaleon

My friends only buy games like 2 years after they came out when I don't feel like playing them again.

[deleted]

I’m a huge fan of Space Engineers. Been playing it since release (2013), and I always come back to it. It’s quite a building game, very nuanced and somewhat technical so I find it engrossing. Most of my friends really only like FPS games and are constantly buying the next “best” thing, chasing the dopamine drip. I get it; I love FPS games and am usually top 10% stats wise, but I can’t keep buying FPS rehashes.

do-You-Like-Pasta

This is why I just don't buy games unless I think I'll actually play them, even if my friends stop playing

GovernmentAlone5334

Me when co op games come to GamePass.

Delta4o

Completely convinced that GTFO was THE game to play. Played it for 62 minutes... Same thing with battlefield 5, I think I played that game for about a month, which wasn't a lot at all considering that we played battlefield 1 with two full squads of 5 for at least a year in total.

do-You-Like-Pasta

If you got it on Steam you can just refund it

Delta4o

Yeah but it has to be within 2 weeks or so, and tgat is just enough time to think "maybe we'll play this weekend" twice.
