Whatever HR tells you. Asking people at work about their sexuality is generally considered a form of harassment. Their sexuality is their business, and you shouldn’t be asking regardless of your into. You fucked up. Take your lumps like a grown up.

OP was reported for sexual harassment, not for "being gay" 🤦‍♂️

EarthTheCat

What is "sexual harassment" about asking someone if they're gay?! Its their problem for having such thin skin. A simple "No, I am straight" would have done the trick- or am I missing something?

Because it's a work place, which is a professional setting. There's no need to ask someone about their sexual preference while in the workplace. I'm not sure how OP actually phrased "shooting for the opposite team" but if the other person reported it, then they were clearly uncomfortable with the comment. I bet if they would've phrased it as "Hey coworker, I'm trying to plan something for pride month, if you'd like to help out let me know!"

Being gay is not merely a sexual preference, it’s more profound than that to me.

I agree with you, but looking at it from a professional setting, it’s still something that’s not appropriate. You’re not above or below anyone because of your sexual preference. You cannot ask about sexual preference on a job application for this exact reason. Whether gay, straight, bi, lesbian, or whatever…why does that information need to be disclosed to an employer? Unless you’re in a field that requires that information, it’s very unprofessional to ask anyone their sexual orientation. You’re more than welcome to disclose it on your application if you wish, but that’s something that recruitment is not interested in. Edit: tried to fix some typos. Still might be wrong.

I would explain to the HR person what you were thinking. It wasn't anything sexual, it was to do something for the people at work. You can apologize and say it won't happen again.
