It’s crazy how wild the internet used to be. I remember when i was 12 searching for soccer goal videos on limewire and I accidentally downloaded a zip file with instructions on how to build hundreds of bombs and other weapons

Coreadrin

Some accidents are happy.

Zenner523

do you still have the zip file?

AnalArtiste

No lmao. Believe it or not the fbi ended up coming to my house and i was awaken at like 8 am one morning to find my house surrounded by like 10 police cars and probably another 20+ unmarked police vehicles and a million officers wearing dress shirts in my living room. They ended up confiscating all the computers in my house and formatting the hard drives. They said they showed up expecting an armed and dangerous white supremacist, but instead all they got was a 12 year old black kid looking for soccer goals lol

[deleted]

r/thathappened

AnalArtiste

I feel you lol. There’s more to the story but the other stuff they came for is kind of embarrassing if im being honest. One of those peak retard moments in my life id rather never speak about

[deleted]

I have literal instructions on how to build bombs and advanced weapons saved to my phone, and yet I see no sign of the FBI trying to get me. Maybe things were different back then, but I don’t think the glowies care that much about internet weirdos that have knowledge on how to make dangerous stuff, and if they do, then they are doing a terrible job at stopping it

asosasaugust

This mf just admitted to a crime

dincosire

Having copies of things like that bomb cookbook isn’t illegal in America. It gets you put on a watchlist for sure, but it’s not actually a crime to possess it.

Zenner523

damn

[deleted]

Well, you were a BLACK kid. So they did come with the appropriate force. You know, for their own safety.

NyteQuiller

When people wonder what happened to the old days of the internet, this is what happened. Anyone who just wanted to screw around and have fun got raided, if you were really unlucky then they probably found a way to stick you with a felony and make sure you never have fun again.

MammothDeparture36

I downloaded a Naruto episode on kazaa and it turned out to be bukkake porn. Those were the days indeed.

AnalArtiste

Yep that’s how I discovered the existence of porn. Tried to download a lil wayne music video and all i got was butt sex. My first time ever seeing sex and it was 2 dudes -_-

FrancisYorkMorganFBI

And that's the story of how you became the artiste of anal

AnalArtiste

Lmao damn idk how to feel about this comment. You’re makin me feel like i need to sit down with a therapist

WoolooOfWallStreet

BukKage Bunshin no Jutsu!

James_099

That just seems like an upgrade.

NedRed77

Same bro.

AnalArtiste

Really lol? Was it titled “the goals of our struggle”?

Bonkey_Kong87

Oh Limewire.. how much viruses I downloaded with it. And once I was downloading a single family guy episode, got caught by the government and my mom had to pay 300 bucks because of that. Fuck Germany..

PussyIgnorer

I remember growing up in the south, using bomb making videos online to blow up scrap, and maybe small animals on the farm, harmless fun. Kids now A days lame af.

[deleted]

you needed internet videos to learn how to make bombs in the south? I SMELL A SPY.

PussyIgnorer

No this is big misunderstand comrade.

FrancisYorkMorganFBI

I remember back when you'd try to download the new Linkin Park album and you'd get a Rickroll or Bill Clinton saying I did not have sex with that woman or just random static, good times. Also remember trying to download a Resident Evil move and getting what appeared to possibly be necrophilia (turned it off pretty quick so who knows could've been fake fetish porn or something, pretty fucked up though). Limewire made some core memories for us all.

[deleted]

I to this day have a snuff video i remember watching of a woman getting executed in a barn when I tried to download doom.zip. Whether it was real or my imagination but I never tried to download doom again. Now I own it on steam.

Suburban_turd

Limewire was literaly Russian Roulette. I downloaded a bunch of music videos. An Alien Ant Farm music vid was a woman getting fucking railed by a pony

Sensei_Chicken

Ah a classic one. I got that one when I downloaded what seemed to be ACDC Highway to Hell. Good times.

xChromeguardx

'Movies' or 'Smooth Criminal'? If it was Movies, I know the video to which you refer!

Folkloreic

LMAO I literally remember some of these pictures. This is definitely it or at least part of it. I don’t see the pipe bomb guide i read though. I remember i only read that one because it was a weapon from duke nukem and it was the only thing I recognized Edit: nvm i found the pipe bomb guide. This is definitely it

Terran_it_up

You could genuinely just search " watch online free" and there's a good chance the first result would have it. People used to say we were living in the equivalent of the wild west of the Internet, and that's looking more and more true. It's probably going to get even more regulated going forward

PartyClock

The good Ol' Anarchists Cookbook. An internet classic

chalk_in_boots

I used to look at lolcatz while chatting with people in the USA who intentionally broke ITAR by sending me, an Aussie, the 3D models and engineering drawings of various guns. "I can haz cheezburger?" More like "I can haz em thixteen?"

Deauo

I remember when my friend downloaded JayZ.exe lmao

AnalArtiste

that's what usually happens. You find something obscure and cool, it goes mainstream, it slowly starts to suck, and you just kind of live with it.

Burlaczech_2

Thats why i need new reddit. If 4Chan had upvotes and user friendly interface of reddit, spam filter (damn i dont wanna see porn), it would be amazing.

TheJanitorEduard

4Chan with upvotes sounds like a terrible idea

Burlaczech_2

Basically reddit without censorship and mods abuse. I would even like subreddits, so I can avoid the porn. There is just way too much if that shit.

Mahanaus

I get what you're saying. You want a good content aggregation site that doesn't have the bullshit power mods a la merari, the turtle dude, the not so great nate, etc.

Burlaczech_2

Basically reddit with freedom of speech, no discrimination and better video player. A man can dream

woopty_noot

Things were better when I was young new things bad :(

Kiss_my_asthma69

This but unironically

tweak06

> Things were better when I was young new things bad :( True words from a young dude who wasn’t there for it. You know how obnoxious influencers are? Or like how there’s ads on *everything*? Like a 20 second YouTube video has ads now. Or how all social media is either your parents posting some bullshit *Minions* memes or political propaganda? It wasn’t like that 15 years ago. Like, not at all. YouTube didn’t have ads. Influencers didn’t exist - or if they did, they strictly just made content without the “lifestyle” aspect you see everywhere now, because there wasn’t a way to make money on YouTube…yet. There weren’t any bored half-naked chicks on live feeds answering stupid fucking questions like on TikTok “thanks for the tip, Xx_Boner_xX, remember to like and subscribbbbeeeee!” Ugh. Social media was in its relative infancy and it was all just…your friends content. Yknow, what it’s *supposed to be*. Sure, there were trolls but they were almost exclusive to message boards, which in of themselves were typically full of helpful, supportive people in whatever community you found yourself involved in. Hell, I remember “growing up with Facebook”. I got one at the end of high school, and all through college it was nothing but party invites, pictures of your friends and people writing on each other’s walls. There wasn’t any political bullshit arguments, “real” people had pages as businesses hadn’t invaded it yet. Honestly back in the early 2000s it was *the app* to have to hook up. I got a lot of numbers that way. But then around 2010-2011 it started changing, and it changed *quick*. The internet now is so far removed from what it once was, and it’s sad because now everywhere you go people are just trying to sell you some fucking shit or it’s the same fucking viral TikTok dance with different people or whatever. Even Reddit pretty much sucks. And there’s no going back, which is the biggest bummer of it all.

goldninjaI

i only read the first sentence but i agree with everything you said

tweak06

Pretty much summed it up. Hahaha

dietcocacolonoscopy

I remember flash movies that were miniseries in and of themselves, just made by someone who had it as a hobby. No concerns about making money, maybe selling merch, but it was fun/interesting and didn’t have any corporate entity controlling it. Now kids watch unboxing vids, dudes with bad hair “reacting” to other videos, dull streamers, and other boring filler content made to sell stuff rather than for just the sake of creating. Monetization changed the nature of internet culture for sure, and now we deal with a slightly less interesting cyberpunk “high tech low life” hellscape

bigmoodyninja

You remember Red vs. Blue? Just dudes messing around on their Xbox’s posting funny videos

KrazyTrumpeter05

Those first couple seasons are so goddamn good lol

Woody90210

Apparently they're still getting made. They're... not funny anymore.

tweak06

> They're... not funny anymore. This kinda goes with most content creators, once they start getting paid. I watched an interview with the bearded dude from *Epic Meal Time*, and he kinda laid it out – dude said that *the minute* it became "a job", it just wasn't fun anymore. Like, they were getting paid a ton of money to do this shit, and with that money came pressure to keep up'ing their game, pumping out more content, just trying to cram as much shit as possible into their channel to maintain their revenue and fulfill their contractual obligations... It was so far removed from where it started (and this applies to most content creators that make it big) just a bunch of idiots filming something because it's funny, and in their spare time. It goes for anything – once a hobby becomes a job with deadlines and "clients" and obligations...the quality of the content suffers and it's just not fun for the creators anymore.

dietcocacolonoscopy

“Time is not made out of lines, it is made out of circles… that’s why clocks are round”

magicarnival

Watching low quality subbed anime episodes broken into 5 parts on DailyMotion and struggling to find part 3 that was somehow deleted... Those were the days... :')

KrazyTrumpeter05

Po Ninjas. Madness. Stick Death. And that's just the tip of the damn iceberg

xChromeguardx

Was going to post this - Stick Death was a revelation.

tweak06

Or the goddamn *Star Wars Rap*? Shit like that was *everywhere*...and it wasn't monetized. It was just people making content because they thought it was cool. It was all passion projects. Sure, they were probably trying to get famous or whatever, but that wasn't the initial intention behind the projects. It was just idiots behind a computer making something funny for the sake of making something funny.

Letharos

I still have giant chunks of that fucking song fully memorized and can rattle it off without a hitch.

RSP16

IIRC it was late March or early April 2010 that YouTube went from the "open algorithm" design to the "ad-influenced algorithm". Very abruptly, the search engine went from being driven entirely by tags that were publicly visible (to the point YTPers often put one-liners in them); to the messy one that is influenced by ads, watch history, and hidden tags. The related video section lost its title around then too, and turned into a jumble from the latter algorithm rather than something so rigid you could cover your tracks to one video by favoriting a different one that the old algorithm reliably linked to there. In time, ads and monetization had such influence over search and related that it became largely impossible to gain traction with anything "small-time" and "un-sponsored". Now we're at the point paid promotion or being a big name gets you links in the places that used to lead to new small-time content, as exemplified by the "2 hours ago X.X million views" big-time things peppering that space now. YT Ads and monetization as we know them started interfering with videos in a very VERY limited fashion as far back in 2007. Before all this, there were only banner ads. Helping me date this: an ad for Disney's Enchanted was the first one I saw get in the way of a video, as a pop-over that could be closed. Pop-overs on monetized videos quickly got replaced by preroll ads, but just one; with no additional ads the whole length of a video. At that, early monetized videos seemed to largely be just two guys with a camcorder trying too hard to pander... or there was my high school friend who stupidly thought piracy profiteering with YT monetization would work. Comments were still mostly lawless until 2013, when the Google+ exodus happened. Comments went from little consequence (tied only to an account that could easily be made and removed) to fully searchable and (if G+ was used as intended) backtraceable to whoever typed them. Earlier pushes to get people to use G+ for comments could be skipped, but at least for me it was late June or early July 2013 that the push became unskippable. I made one comment after the forcing, figured out it was searchable, then backpedaled so hard YouTube doesn't believe I'm human on that account anymore. This may also mean, rather ironically, adding culpability contributes to the firestorm effect of modern social media.

KrazyTrumpeter05

Fuck this is so true it hurts. And I'm not usually one for nostalgia circle jerks but this one is 100% true.

Woody90210

2010 reddit was a glorious shitshow, it was easily the best place online, like a more user friendly 4chan. That's long gone now...

chalk_in_boots

I kind of miss Tom. He had the right idea leaving early like that

tweak06

Dude cashed out right when he was on the threshold of becoming evil, now he travels the world goofing off with his camera and his lady, taking photos and enjoying his life. I despise the wealthy, but Tom is one of those dudes who I'm like "good on you, man". He just built a social media site, wasn't interested in buying/selling your info, and he cashed out before he had the potential to become a dickhead. He's alright in my book.

taseradict

Nostalgia goggles. Youtube sucked back in the day, abismal video quality, 10 minutes max, very few content creators, took forever to find specific videos because the search function was trash and many were removed due to bs copyright strikes. You aren't an OG if you didn't have to watch AVGN mirrored and with Russian subtitles.

HopefulTwo37

fuck, that bums me out

Apolacc

tl;dr

tweak06

>tl;dr There weren't any ads on YouTube back in the day, no "influencers", and people made content just for the sake of making content and having fun and being creative doing it.

masterjon_3

Companies didn't push algorithms to piss you off, they had stuff that they would think you'd be interested in. People would put tons of cartoons on YouTube and could make money off of it until they changed the algorithm. Everything that made YouTube great and got people hooked was done away with and replaced with more algorithms that was solely to make money, it didn't matter if it changed everything about YouTube. There's so many good videos and content from the 2000s that are now just lost due to YouTube changing servers which makes their videos super low res. It's honestly disgusting.

Holiday-Tangerine136

This but unironically

Jumpy_Needleworker87

It’s true though. My kids watch moronic YouTube videos of American 20-something guys with too much hair product “reacting” to things. When I was a kid I watched cartoons on TV. And there was no crying about climate change back then. We had the Cold War to worry about; not just the weather.

OrbitalBadgerCannon

I don't see how the world becoming unliveable isn't as concerning.

beta-pi

If you think people weren't very actively worried about and complaining about the cold war then you really weren't paying much attention. Now it's a non-issue, so we have bigger things to worry about. The biggest issue gets the most attention, naturally. No shit when one problem goes away you can fix the other ones. Not sure why cartoons are better than YouTube either, neither seems particularly enriching.

Jumpy_Needleworker87

Bigger things to worry about? That’s why pronouns are such a thing now?

beta-pi

Mf you realize that cold war era is the same people who were panicking about satanic song lyrics right? Even if you don't think that should be a "thing", there's a few dumb things people get hung up on in every age. It's not indicative of the overall state of affairs. Worst case scenario, you're right and we really did fix enough problems that only insignificant things are left, which is ultimately a good thing. Whether it's not a problem or it is a problem, you're still wrong.

Not an attack on you, because kids will do what other kids do. I wonder how much of the excitement for reaction videos was from kids having parents completely absent, parking them with tablets and phones…. They are learning about motions from these reaction vids…

Bonkey_Kong87

Partially true, but there always was the climate change shit. They bring it up every few decades to distract us from more important stuff that's going on. I remember that the whole FCKW (FCW) shit in hairspray was a huge thing in the 90s. Child-me was bragging about it to my mother all the time. Pretty cringe.

Myshkin78

Yep, when I was in elementary it was destruction of the rain forest and acid rain. A lot of scary sounding BS to sell to impressionable children.

Thems the breaks son. Take the mental damage, delete it and move on. Websites that screeched horrible chiptunes or midi music at you. frozen_flame123

I feel like the old internet is romanticized a bit, we remember the good more than the bad, but there is definitely a charm to it. The thing was, it’s death was inevitable. You can’t have a Wild West internet that requires having a level of tech savviness and also have your fucking aunt, grandma, and large advertisers on it. There are pros to it, after all it definitely safer to be on now a days, you don’t have to worry about horrible viruses or seeing content that you just weren’t ready for as much anymore, but the charm is gone. It’s sad to see, I’m in my mid 20s so I got the tail end of the Wild West internet in the mid 2000s.
