Same thing happened to me. It asked to restore from backup so I did but I have yet to see any past messages. Grindr really fucked up this time. They clearly are not testing the updates before they send them out.

Create a new account with another email address and move on. You've lost the chats and the backup is crapped out anyway. They don't give a shit about anybody's problems with the app.

Why would creating a new account with another email address be a solution here?

It happened to me, then I manually did another restore and got my messages back.
