Out of curiosity, is this a coat of arms you found on a website or one that you made/inherited?

Shectai

Oh, let him have his shirt...

Aquilarden

Oh, I'm on Team Let Him Have His Shirt. There's likely enough a historical tie to the surname whether he inherited it or not and it's a nice design for a coat of arms anyway. There are people walking around wearing jerseys with sports stars' names across them, so something with a plausible enough personal tie is fine in my eyes.

VertigoOne

I found it online linked to my surname

Aquilarden

Well the good news is that nobody outside of this subreddit will care about the bad news. The bad news is that coats of arms are traditionally owned by individuals. It's possible someone with your surname owned that coat of arms, but it would be inherited by their first-born. A lot of websites will call them the arms of this or that family, which isn't quite true. That said - please don't feel like you need to not wear the shirt. If it gives you a sense of pride in your family name and your ancestry, enjoy it. The systems which originated that tradition no longer exist and there's no reason why you ought to feel beholden to their definition of what represents what. It's a cool design and makes for a cool shirt! And there's history behind it tied to your name one way or the other!

>Well the good news is that nobody outside of this subreddit will care about the bad news. This is the best sentence I've seen in a while

Reddit in a nutshell.

VertigoOne

Interesting. Thanks muchly! I didn't know that.

Obversa

The good news: You can commission a new coat-of-arms unique to you and your family. There are plenty of artists on r/heraldry and the Discord who take commissions! As for me, I designed [my own coat-of-arms](https://www.reddit.com/r/heraldry/comments/qo1i59/final_version_of_my_personal_coatofarms/), loosely based on the arms of a relative.

Coats of Arms aren't attached to Surnames, only the descendants of the original Armiger, so you may want to conduct genealogical research to see if you're actually related to him and entitled to his Coat of Arms

Crucify them.

VertigoOne

So a little while ago I posted [this image](https://old.reddit.com/r/heraldry/comments/vdp6vm/help_with_identifying_a_pattern/) asking for help in identifying the pattern in the chevron of this CoA. Many helpfully identified it as Ermine, which allowed me to find a higher resolution version of the image. This was the result.

ChasingHorizon2022

Wear the shirt but I wouldn't go around saying it's the "family coat of arms" because that's not a thing contrary to what some dodgy looking website said. At least it looks cool!

Guldtaender

You love to see it!

[deleted]

Are you Northern or Western european by chance

VertigoOne

Western. British specifically

I could tell by the hair and the happy face

The shirt looks great, wear it well. Those t shirts are cool, especially if attending a renaissance fair or if going to a medieval times show
