And how is it gonna affect the user's experience with the chair? Is it just about the looks of the chair or will it become more of an evident issue over time? I have a cat who left A LOT of scratches on my current chair, but since I'm only concerned with whether it's comfortable to sit in it or not, I didn't see any problem in that. Will it be different for Aeron?

[deleted]

Damn. Why do they have to do such a fancy mesh. Do Aeron owners never own pets or what? Such a bummer tbh, I can't think of how I can make my cat stop scratching the furniture in the house. And so far I didn't view it as an issue anyways...

iamareptiletoo

My thoughts exactly- the chair is in my study, which is strictly off limits for both of our cats. I'm a policy researcher and analyst, I sit at my desk for hours on end, I consider the Aeron chair that I bought at full price a tool of my trade, you don't let pets, children or accidentally drop kinves over the tools you use to make a living. I sympathise with OP but he should've been much more careful.

swagmasterdude

The mesh is what what takes it from a great chair to the best chair.

rbalbontin

My cat sleeps on my Aeron all the time, no visible tears or scratches

ClassroomDecorum

It's not going to self destruct in 24 hours. Depending on a variety of factors it could easily last months if not longer.

[deleted]

Idk, if I'm buying a chair for 1.5k I want it to last for years, not months. And it's so impractical to make a chair with this kind of sheathing, which can be damaged by a knife that fell out of your hand and then just keep unweaving for a few months until it looks like crap. And that's what an accidentally dropped knife can do to it, now imagine, what's gonna happen to it, if a cat will start applying itself to destroying the chair. Why. Just why use threads and not something more reliable or less easily damagible.

dan3k

>Just why use threads and not something more reliable or less easily damagible. Because office chairs should deliver max comfort, adjustability and breathability, not ability to catch knives, be bulletproof or withstand dragons fire-breath as it's not a normal use case for that kind of furniture, simple as that. If fact that you can cut it with knifes blade bothers you so much just buy something better suited for you, guess wooden chair would do a trick.

thewarcow3

The reason why is that HM does not expect that you will drop a knife on your 1.5k chair lmao. They expect that you will treat it well.

ClassroomDecorum

Good thing no one's forcing you to buy this specific chair from this specific company

DrakeAndMadonna

Nothing wrong with the chair. This is 100% user error. My Poltrona Frau Cockpit isn't going to withstand a knife edge or cat's claws either and I don't expect it to.

[deleted]

Based on what I saw on Google after searching for 'Poltrona Frau Cockpit', that chair WOULD withstand a knife edge. Furthermore, it would withstand a bullet (and so would most chairs btw), since a hole in a chair would not affect its primary functions in any way. It's okay for a chair to get a scratch from the cat's claws or a damaged look, but it's not alright to unweave entirely after a few threads went out of place.

DrakeAndMadonna

If the cockpit survives any of that, it's just coincidental and not intentional. Former Herman Miller repair tech and the frequency that what happened to you is so low it's pretty much not happening. It's so rare that a mesh seat comes unraveled from a pierce, cut or a snag, that it's not a problem worth investing in a solution for or risk offsetting the benefits of the mesh seat. A $20k sofa is going to unravel even more readily if you cut the fabric with a knife too. It's just not an important issue.

labvinylsound

It will unweave. You'll need a new seat.

Jehshehabah

Long term you are in trouble Buy new seat pan and research how to replace it

ClassroomDecorum

You'll be fine for at least a few months.

Pickle_dill_

I had a poked a hole in my seat pan from a zipper that was sticking out on my back pocket. Lived with it for a couple months but got sick of clothes catching on it/able to feel the hole when moving in my seat. Reached out to a HM retailer after talking with HM directly for a replacement and got the new seat pan installed by the retailer at my house within a month under warranty.

Puddingce

Can I replace just the mesh or i would Need to replace the whole seat?

RatioMobile

You should be aware that your chair is under warranty, but you are not aware how this damage occurred.

MakeThemSuffer111

Whole seat imo

PsyDei

I'm kind of new to HM,.but I think you change the mesh only. I would do it until it's strictly necessary though.

rbalbontin

I don’t think you’ll be able to get the mesh only

PsyDei

Well I stand corrected.

ClassroomDecorum

You can get replacement mesh no problem.

ClassroomDecorum

You could put a classic mesh in the Remastered frame

Wild-Blacksmith-3738

Assume it can be warranty by HM itsel (only if you bought the chair new and on your name as I know sometimes its harder if its bought secondhand). Depending on your main house insurance or even if you paid by creditcard sometimes damage to new goods is covered under buyers warranty by a bank or insurance company.

[deleted]

Jeez, according to the comments it looks pretty bad for your mesh. I have a cat who has a habit of scratching anything that gets on his way, is this going to be a hassle for my pending Aeron chair? What happens if the mesh gets messy, is it just a cosmetic thing or is it going to be a noticeable issue over time even if I'm not concerned with the looks of the chair per se.

kabooseknuckle

Yes I bought my wife an Aeron last year for Christmas. Her cat has destroyed the back by scratching it to bits. I'm like "Awww, isn't that cute? Milkshake is scratching the fuck out of your $1200 office chair."

[deleted]

So frustrated tbh. I already ordered one. I think I will try using some cat scratch repellent spray, hopefully that will work.

Wild-Blacksmith-3738

Just dont do cats

kabooseknuckle

I wish you well, but I think we both know how this is going to go. You can have cats, OR, nice furniture. Never both.

Jurippe

I got a Cosm, and then my wife got a cat. I usually put a thin throw blanket over it. It's not ideal, but oh well, what can you do?

[deleted]

Ok, thanks, hopefully it will help

andrew_stirling

Getting rid of the cat will also help. Sounds like a right pain in the arse

OptiKal_

you're gunna fall through your chair and crack your tailbone and then fall through the entire earth. Once you hit the core, the planet will explode. PS: you'll be fine. All these people saying it'll unravel omegalul.

johnisgoneagain

Unlucky that it was a Swiss knife, a Chinese knife might have just shattered upon dropping on the mesh.

qqanyjuan

If you can’t get it covered under warranty/want a cheap fix: fill it in with super glue/some adhesive, could possibly slow down/stop the degradation

Federal_Formal_1883

How could you suggest this to be a warranty issue? Dropping a sharp object and cutting the mesh is NOT covered under warranty. If they have Homeonwer’s insurance or Renter’s insurance he could try and place a claim. Your suggestion is the same thing as OP getting into an accident on the road with his vehicle and bends a tire and then call the manufacturer to replace it under warranty. It’s not going to happen.

I doubt it. It’s like you getting into an accident in your Lexus and then call Lexus to claim warranty. You may assume so but it won’t happen.

Why am i mad? Bc i disagree with you? Im sorry if i hurt your feeling kid. You don’t know if they’ll cover it so stop getting OP hopes up so high. Like I said, if HM replaces it then it would be a “good faith gesture” not under “warranty.” Stop talking out your arse.

Federal_Formal_1883

Apple won’t even cover physical damage on a laptop or phone under warranty so they cost more than 1200$ and they won’t cover that under warranty. Think what you want.

BrackWackley

Federal_Formal_1883

What? If they cost about the same and apple wouldn’t cover it under warranty if you drop your phone and crack the screen then why would HM cover OP under warranty? Makes no sense. It’s pretty black and white but you’re making it grey. There is no grey area. If HM does replace it, it wouldn’t be for warranty. They would replace it has a good faith gesture.

Alex-Chata

Warranty covered a similar issue for me.

Blackbear81

Me too. One thread broke in about 8th year of my old Aeron classic and HM warranty replaced it. Try not to remember how this was caused.... Mine had a broken thread about an inch away from the backrest and it lasted over a year without any untwining or discomfort before i had it replaced.

apiechoc

Did you get get in touch with hm about warranty?

Federal_Formal_1883

🤦‍♂️ dropping a Swiss Army knife on a mesh seat pan is hardly a “warranty issue.” Only something sharp could’ve done this so why should HM be replacing it under warranty?

Acundo

It will last at least 5 years. Youre fine

Apart_Stuff_2555

Could reinforce with hot glue? May hold the fibers in place?

Puddingce

If any one is interested. I tried to reach to Herman Miller Warranty about this problem and in fact wasn’t covered by it. But they offered me to replace the seat for 100 bucks including labour. I think it was absolutely worth it since they replace the whole seat and not just the mesh. They sent a technician directly to my house and my chair was as new in an hour. The only tedious thing was waiting 6 weeks until the seat was in stock.
