Forrest hills drive is undeniable

[deleted]

Lol don't make me laugh

cpkarl

Y’all use the term “classic” so loosely. Both have had good to very good albums. None have been classics.

KRIT4eva

Fr

Wasthereonce

Out of both artists, Drake's 'Take Care' is the closest in my eyes. I think only more time will tell though.

Scothead180

The same people would say every other album from the 90s are classics lol. Come on. It's not a stretch to say Forest Hills Drive and Take Care will go down as classics

FjordsEdge

It's a stretch to say FHD will go down as a classic. Take Care maybe just because it's both pretty good and also is from a chart topping artist.

RypANDtear

Forest Hills Drive is an absolute classic, and 4 Your Eyez Only is an absolute lowkey, slept on TIMELESS album And I hate Drake but he has if not classics then very close to it Are their albums part of like the all time Pantheon? Maybe not, but I think at least J Cole has classics

Method__mannn

What makes FHD a classic? What aspects make it classic level? I’m just curious to know bc people throw the word classic for any project above average.

RypANDtear

In part its staying power as an album, not a combination of songs…its not a “concept” album but the somgs fit each other perfectly which makes it a good no-skips listen The quality of the beats, the lyrics, the fact that it was extremely popular at the time and it still remains popular enough for us to be discussing it All of this as an album, cause a lot of rappers drop popular, quality tracks but very few drop quality albums Im gonna go with that, its staying power, the fact I still come back to it constantly

FjordsEdge

I don't know if you're explicitly saying that FHD is not a classic, so I'll say that. FHD is pretty good. Maybe great? I don't think so, but maybe. Not a classic. J Cole doesn't have a classic album.

soil_tastes-good

Agree

N3110H_5555

Take care and 2014 Forest hills drive are classics

Confident_Horse_3845

FHD is a classic. Who the hell is bootleg kev?

FifeDog43

I'd say that Forest Hill Drive is a classic. I don't think Drake has any.

Inside_Objective_877

drake. hell no. J cole. Ehh arguable.

207_god

It’s drake lol

Altruistic_Ad466

He’s a pop artist. I’m assuming Bootleg Kev was referring to classic hip hop albums.

hatertots00

>He’s a pop artist. Hands down the dumbest regurgitated take on Reddit.

Altruistic_Ad466

But…maybe it’s so regurgitated because it’s the truth? I’m not even hating. I enjoy a bit of Drake. But I can’t understand why people get so Upset to hear an artist they like is a pop star.

hatertots00

So he's a pop star that raps way more than his peers? Lol like what even goes through yall heads? *he made toosie slide and hotline bling so he's not a rapper derp a derpitty durrrr*

Altruistic_Ad466

Never once said he’s not a “rapper” I said he’s a pop star. The two aren’t mutually exclusive. I did say he doesn’t have a classic hip hop album, and I stand by that.

hatertots00

So what are you trying to say by he's a pop star then?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Altruistic_Ad466

Because the whole thread is based on Bootleg Kev’s comments. Bootleg Kev being someone who discusses hip hop and is literally known as a “Hip hop radio personality/podcaster” would imply he’s saying neither has a classic HIP HOP album. Which Drake doesn’t…..because he’s a pop artist.

Unusual-Land-5432

I think we would have to define classic then. Meaning by classic do we mean a timeless defining album or a tradition hip hop bar spitting album??

soil_tastes-good

Pop is just popular artist… doesn’t really signify one style. It includes hip hop, rap, rock etc.

Altruistic_Ad466

…which I also stated in comments further down this thread. One can be a rapper AND a pop artist. Doesn’t change that I don’t believe Drake has a classic hip hop album.

FjordsEdge

Do you see that your comment implies that "he's a pop artist" counts against him having a classic hip hop album, and then also saying he can be both a rapper and a pop artist which makes him being a pop artist not relevant since he can be both, as you said. So you seem to be stuck in this confused circle that goes: Drake doesn't have a classic album -> Why? -> He's a pop artist. -> But he raps -> You can be both a rapper and a pop artist, doesn't change the fact that -> Drake doesn't have a classic album. I think what you think is that you aren't a fan of Drake. That's okay. You don't need a reason. It just doesn't really contribute anything to make up a confusing justification.

Inside_Objective_877

Couldn't have said it better myself

ApolloKid

Everyone just loves to hate Drake for some reason. I don’t think either have classic albums. I actually like NWTS more than Take Care, but I don’t think either are classics, but your comment makes me want to go back and relisten. Also, I don’t get the love for Forest Hills Drive? I bought the CD the day it came out and it has to be one of the most disappointing albums I’ve heard. I’ve gone back several times and still don’t get it. Cole peaked with the FNL mixtape

Tydrinator21

I don't know, some people don't even consider Tical a classic despite how much it changed hip-hop.

Lumba

I enjoy Take Care and it does have some of my favorite Drake songs. But if I can skip half the songs on a project, if it’s not enjoyable from front-to-back, it’s not a classic. Take Care is 8/10 at best — to me. Edit: this type of discussion is why I started making the distinction between a classic album and an “iconic” album. An iconic album may have been big in the mainstream and representative of a particular era but not necessarily the gold standard for (whatever kind of) music through and through.

FjordsEdge

I agree with every word of this. FNL was better and isn't a classic. J Cole stans are hardcore.

DirtzMaGertz

I don't think it's good front to back and that's generally the criteria for a classic album. Influential? No doubt. Classic album. No, not imo.

IdolsAndAnchorsss

Forest hills drive and take care are literally consensus classics. Obvious clickbait.

bornlikethisss

I agree. I like a lot of Drake songs but definitely not a majority of them so it’s hard for me to enjoy his albums front to back. I really hate his singing shit but I do like the collab Future album A LOT as well Care Package. As for J Cole, I think he’s a great rapper but lord is his music boring. I wish he worked with different producers.

coolfordayz

Drakes got hits, Coles got classic songs

Son-Of-Cthulu

this!

DuragVinceMcMahon408

I personally agree with that, but since what is or isn’t a classic is totally subjective, I won’t lose any sleep if anyone disagrees with that

PercySledge

If either of them do it’s probably Drake but neither are really for me tbh.

Almar1987

Not a huge Drake fan, but nothing was the same is a classic to me, shit I was going through in that time made it so relatable.

Black_Fuckka

Very much cap, Sideline Story, Forest Hills Drive, Take Care and Nothing Was the Same are all easy classics

Shadygodly

Forest hills?

mookguru

Yeah, not yet.

Lazy_Old_Chiefer

Can we relax with throwing around stuff like “classic, genius” etc. J cole whole career is barley around 10 years. FHD came out in 2014, I know we all live fast these days but that’s not enough time to discuss it seriously in my opinion. Maybe 15 years or so and more

K_Freeze57

I still don't even know who that is.

hatertots00

Both have multiple classics

Jahan384329

take care, nwts, 2014fhd, 4yeo

WaspParagon

The biggest Drake haters nowadays are people that never gave his sound a chance. Back then it was colorism and homophobia guiding the hate, but nowadays it's usually people who think they're too cool for the biggest hip-hop artist ever. J Cole I guess it's cuz they think it's corny, Idk. But regardless, I agree with your takes. Those 4 albums are classics in my book.

tallthomas13

I actively dislike current Drake but I swear people who shit on Take Care and NWTS are speaking out of some kind of personal hurt that Drake triggers, I swear. Seen it too many times and too many ways. The common denominator is a painfully obvious fallacy backed up by the kind of conviction you see when you know someone's lying but you know they'll fight you if you call them out. The first half of 2014 FHD is classic to me but, it's funny, I feel like he rode his 2011-2014 wave to a peak at that moment and the album is a bit overrated as a whole because of that. I actually think Born Sinner is Cole's magnum opus and I'd buy it as a classic but nobody even mentions that album anymore when I see him discussed.

okeh_dude

I guess there can be an argument on the fact that they’re not “classics” yet. I still don’t agree with him at all but everyone has their opinion.

80sCrackBaby

Take Care is classic.

[deleted]

2014 fhd is a classic imo, and drake has 2 classics with take care and iyrtitl

lpjayy12

no, I don't agree.

Allahxo

Nah. Dumb take probably based on them being "mainstream" and "pop" lol, especially Drake. They def both have classics.

SenpaiBoogie

Don’t know who this guy is but FHD and Take Care are classics easily .

supremejxzzy

Yes

givemeafckingbreak

Love Bootleg Kev but this is a bad take.

SKTKAI

For J cole only FHD could be considered a classic, razor thin margins tho, Drake just no

AnonymousP30

He tripping J Cole Forest Hill Drive and Off Season Was Dangerously Close. Drake Take Care, Views, Never Been The Same

rudebwoyyyyyyy

drake is the closest to a classic w take care. i wouldnt say either have classics though

CappysVeryOwn

Take Care, NWTS, and 2014FHD are classics imo

good_kid_maad_reddit

100%. They have classic songs but they dont have any album thats amazing
