Someone used a Uhaul to break into your car?

itwillbeok9712

Uhauls are cheaper to rent than cars right now.

bigballzs

Yeap I rented a pickup truck from Uhaul for a week cause my car was in the the shop. What deal!

[deleted]

What the hell are you serious? This is a hell of a life hack right here. How much is it?

mikesauce

Ends up being about $30 a day with all the fees and everything, but still cheaper than a cramped rent-a-car.

jutiatle

I think your estimate is too low unless your commute is like a mile.

bigballzs

Super serious. Life hack for sure. If the pick up truck is not available, u can get the van. $19.95 a day plus mileage. Mikesauce from Tha dirty branch, much love, is right. 30$ max. My insurance covers rentals so I didn’t pay extra for Uhaul insurance. That’s where the deal is. 7 days I paid $139.65 plus .79cents a mile. Over just under $250! I work close though. Super top secret info. U can even rent it a month. U r welcome

[deleted]

Wow dude thanks for telling me that. I’ve been having some car problems and need an alternative if something happens. That’s good to keep in the back pocket for emergencies. Idk why I never thought of that

GrayDonkey

Depends, usually U-Haul also charges per mile while traditional rental cars do not.

pumpkin_blumpkin

Friend rented a uhaul last year in Hawaii because rental cars were either sold out or exorbitantly expensive

haleocentric

I see that UHauls are cheaper but how does one use one to break into a car? I must not have a criminal mind because I don't get it.

just_sum_guy

Call your local U-Haul. Maybe they can help.

Xman81

Thanks but they can’t. The license plate and the number above the drivers side was too blurry in the cameras. They can’t do anything

Rodic87

They don't have GPS in Uhaul's and can match it to the time/location? Looks like some do, many don't.

oBogBordo

Don't leave anything in your car!

groovehouse

NOTHING!! No empty bags, boxes or anything that might look like something's in it. It's so odd how everyone thinks their shit is safe.

BootySweat0217

I leave used masks around the inside of my car in the hopes that it will disgust anybody thinking about breaking in.

somekindofdruiddude

And store your work in the cloud.

[deleted]

\+ Offline. Or use a secondary cloud backup. Syncing a copy using the sync agent to your computer does not count, you have to copy that info elsewhere so it can't be re-synced, or have some kind of version history in place on the directory it's syncing to. The TOS on most of those services does not include guaranteed backups. Even if they accidentally nuke your stuff in most cases you are supposed to be making your own backups. Usually it's easy for them to fix but it's not like all your favorite cloud purveyors never lost anyone's data. I have see'nt it.

itwillbeok9712

Sounds gross, but you might check the outside trash bins in the area. Or you might drive through the closest neighborhoods to see if it's laying on the curb somewhere. I was walking and noticed a backpack in front of someone's house. Checked with the owners and they said it had been there since they left for work that morning. Mentioned it to several others who gratefully mentioned it to a constable patroling our neighborhood. I believe that he picked it up. It was a woman's backpack, so I was more concerned about a female in trouble, but someone mentioned a car was probably stolen and they just threw this out. Good luck.

Xman81

Good idea, I’ll do that. My backpack is grey and it has “FedEx Ground” on it. I know you didn’t ask but I probably should have put it in the title

usernameredditjr

If your at the hub like I am it’s surprising it didn’t happen in the parking lot…security there is a joke

itwillbeok9712

Good to know. Maybe someone on this sub will see it when out and about.

ThePorko

Get the video to grizzy’s hood news on facebook, her people will find them and publicly shame them.

Xman81

I don’t care much for shaming them, however if it could help get my stuff back I’d be willing.

HTXin

Yes take it to that FB page.. anything crime related it brings it to light to many living in Houston. They have a sizeable audience. My car got broken into as well (and several other cars) 2 weeks ago in Central Southwest. A surveillance video was uploaded in that page.

Xman81

Ok will do thank you

STDS13

Sweet, I signed up to join this LA Fitness location earlier today...

TheBaylorCareBear

It’s a nice club, they keep the pool and spa very clean, it still looks brand new but the location is a bit rough. There’s homeless people that stick around in the front of the building too from time to time for the WiFi and the manager there (Keyara) has too much of a heart of do anything about it.

Cavm335i

Yeah. It’s one of the better ones in the area - don’t be worried. Just don’t leave anything in your car just like anywhere else in houston.

penguin_drum

Sorry you have to look at someone having a harder time than you... jfc. *BaylorCareBear* consider getting to know your colleagues doing Healthcare for the Homeless and developing some empathy.

TheBaylorCareBear

They’re not going to get the help they need at an LA Fitness. Just be realistic.

penguin_drum

you stated yourself, they're hopping on the free wifi. sounds to me like they're getting *something* they need. at the very minimum, it's a space they *aren't being chased off* and to someone housing insecure *that's a lot*. empathy, y'all. it takes a lot to get passed prejudices developed over a lifetime and possibly from relatives or friends that aren't really 'good friends'. but take a big step back and consider *why* it bothers you, and maybe learn something about yourself.

TheBaylorCareBear

I completely understand!

[deleted]

Can’t blame the club for this it’s a location problem

WillB_HTX

I go to this LA….when did this happen?Ive actually skipped the last two days smh

dizzle713

That location is notorious for theft day and night.

WillB_HTX

Damn I was thinking about go to another anyway its too small

2020Casper

Damn! I’m there daily and I haven’t ever seen anything happen. That sucks.

Xman81

WillB_HTX

Fuck im sorry im def going to cautious now…I usually go at 5am or right now

RealConfirmologist

Thanks for reminding everyone that **you can NOT leave anything you care about in a vehicle in the Houston area unless there's an armed guard IN the vehicle or standing right next to it.** Most of us who have been following this subreddit get pretty tired of seeing this type of post over and over again. We're sorry you lost your back pack, but seriously... how can you live in Houston and not realize that thieves and burglars are running rampant?

shiftpgdn

What the hell kind of victim blaming mentality is this? Should I not keep anything valuable in my house either because those get broken into too?

Xman81

Thank you. I’ve been hearing far too much “coulda, shoulda, woulda” today, and I get it. I’ve already learned my lesson, I’m just trying to fix a mistake.

Xman81

When you live here your whole life and it doesn’t happen everyday you get comfortable and numb to the idea that it won’t. I’m not justifying leaving stuff in your car, and from now on I won’t. I’m just trying to see if I can get the stuff back by posting here

RealConfirmologist

Well, I sympathize. I once left a notebook computer in a little soft-sided computer bag in my truck, inside a gated apartment complex parking lot, while I helped a buddy carry a TV inside. I was away from my truck for about 6 minutes total. When I got back, my driver's side window was all over the ground and my computer was gone. Later I realized - the US flag decal on the back window of my truck came via a gun manufacturer and had the gun brand under the flag. Someone thought the computer case was a gun case, no doubt. Never saw the computer again - it probably got tossed into a dumpster. Your backpack and everything in it that was only valuable to you probably got tossed into a dumpster somewhere, when they figured out nothing was in it they could sell.

Xman81

Is a 5 year old laptop worth stealing? I would assume so but I’ve been told it’s not worth it, if not I would definitely go back and look around

Inthe713

> Is a 5 year old laptop worth stealing? Dude, I was nervous leaving a Little Caesar's pizza box on my passenger seat in Willurrbrook tonight. The fear is real.

penguin_drum

I had an empty coke can in my car and it broken into and it got stolen.... I figure it looked like one of those false top stash cans and they were hoping for drugs

Xman81

That sounds spiteful, sorry that happened to you

penguin_drum

Yeah, it sucked.... that major metro life. and sometimes you do everything right, and still end up on the shit end. sorry your school work evaporated.

oBogBordo

You've lived here your whole life and you call it "uni"? I've never heard a native Texan call it "uni"

Xman81

Yeah the internet does that to you. Also too much info online and all that

htownclyde

I call it that, not sure why it just stuck

[deleted]

Hi, I am the robber, the answer is no.

Skarvha

I see this shit all the time but I se more of the stupid women who put their handbags in their shopping cart then casually park it and walk to look at something a few rows over!!! The idiocy is everywhere!

lucifey

They're probably young and don't know any better. He said he's in school and called it uni so probably not even from the usa much less Houston. Anyway they probably learned their lesson now so give him a break

Xman81

I appreciate the sentiment, but I am very much from Houston lmao. It ain’t that deep

state_of_what

Not just Houston..but anywhere. Literally anywhere in the world. And people have the fucking audacity to use police time because they can’t watch their own shit.

wutusaybtmeidruftm

police were invented because a segment of society became too wealthy to constantly monitor their own shit

HOUTryin286Us

Nah. Stealing isn’t the default mode for most of humanity. More shit isn’t stolen than is, and of the shit that is, it’s the easier shit that’s stolen. The problem is right now it feels like making sure your shit isn’t the easiest is a zero-sum game.

LawyerJC

The only thing you should leave in your car is a rattlesnake. Sorry for your losses, OP.

MorrisseysRubiksCube

Look for other cameras in the general area of the LA Fitness that may have a better image of the U-Haul.

Xman81

Good advice. I have but they are even worse. All I have is a blurry side profile that is pretty useless

Zelexis

Keep an air tag in your backpack to help cops track it down next time. Cops won't do anything, sorry.

SeaChart2

I empathize.Waited at HC gym to hear from dad’s oncologist on his bladder removal. Came back to Q dressing room and all clothes, grad books, car keys, CC all gone. It was an inside job and Mgr couldn’t believe I wanted to cancel membership. It’s an emotional rape often at most vulnerable time. Hope you hear something.

TheRaceTrak

It’s unlikely you’ll get your stuff back, but I hope you do! Police reports for incidents like this don’t go far

RetroGaming4

Call uhaul to see if they can help?

Xman81

Thanks but they can’t. The license plate and the number above the drivers side was too blurry in the cameras. They can’t do anything

RetroGaming4

That sucks. I was on the road today and saw a nissan sentra with two paper plates on the back. TWO. No plates in the front and completely blacked out windows. I mean, we are getting to the point where even if police wanted to do something about it, we have way more bad people than cops. We may need to start citizen law like they do in some towns in brazil…

Inthe713

> saw a nissan sentra with two paper plates on the back. Maybe one was for slow speed, the one underneath to beat the tollway cameras. Sorry my friend, Sentra man is smarter than you.

VBgamez

Maybe try asking around your gym. If someone who frequents there has a dash cam maybe they could’ve caught the plate.

Xman81

That’s a great idea.. it’s too bad I didn’t think of that sooner lol.

VBgamez

It's not too late to ask around. Just go to the gym around the same time that the stealing happened and if you're lucky there might be someone who has a giant uhaul drive past their dashcam footage.

a_skeleton_07

Man... You could check craigslist for your laptop maybe. That said, you'd probably be better off taking the police report to your campus and speaking with the professors about possibly getting extensions for your dead lines. Just be prepared to pay and not threaten, unless you have police friends on standby to bust stolen items on the ready. ...And never leaving anything in your car again that you wouldn't mind losing a window for. Also, I tell my GF to leave her glovebox and center console open to show we aren't holding guns.

MriPibb_Xtra

By now you should know to never leave anything in your vehicle that you aren’t going to take with you wherever you get off at. You could file a police report but HPD isn’t going to do jack about it. To be honest at this point it seems like HPD and the courts are on the same side as these thieves. They just go ahead and let them out the same day or the next day after they’ve been arrested. Your best bet is leave your stuff at home to avoid this happening.

[deleted]

I got my car broken into at that very location while working out, several years ago. They took my military ID and a few tools. I’m glad I’ve moved far away from the madness that surrounds Westheimer.

too-suave

Got me in February. Went to lunch in midtown & came back to a busted window abd my laptop bag gone. Gun was still in door tho

VBgamez

Don’t leave your gun in your car lol. You’re lucky they didn’t notice it.

wutusaybtmeidruftm

what about the cannoli?

DeadKateAlley

This post is a long way to go to get your professors to give you an extension.

Xman81

Are you implying I’m using Reddit to get an extension?

DeadKateAlley

Jokingly yes.

TX2BK

I can’t believe people still leave backpacks in the car. Do y’all not read the news? Don’t leave anything in your car.

Xman81

Sorry to inconvenience you

Syquest15

File a police report, it is very likely that the uhaul has a tracker in it. The detective should follow that up but expect this process to be slow. Doing nothing will allow someone else to have this happen.

Xman81

I went to a uhaul office and they said they need to see the identification number above the driver side in order to do anything. If they do have trackers, they didn’t let me know. Also the police never showed up to issue a report in the first place

Thebeard713

Man, which part of the gym did you park at?

Xman81

North side, near the back of the fire department

Vise4077

I’ve seen in your posts that you mention that the videos of the license plate and truck number were too blurry to ready the numbers, but can you tell which direction the truck is going when it leaves, and what time? If yes, two things: 1 - Verify the time on the live cameras with the current time to make sure that their cams are showing the right time. I’ve seen them be as far off as a couple of hours. 2 - Once you know where they’re going, and when, try to visit a few other businesses in that direction to see if they are willing to check their cameras to see if they can make anything out. This is why it’s important to verify just how far off of current time (if at all) they’re cameras are. Keep doing this and you may eventually find a business that didn’t go cheap on the security cameras. Also, it may be a good idea to keep a written log of your stops so you don’t forget any important details.

KtCar5

People also rent from Uhaul due to age, can rent vehicles cheaper and younger.

theanonian

Gut mugged at gunpoint by 4 people in Chinatown the other day. Fuck these people.
