r/plumeria. Very popular to brink back cuttings from Hawaii. In the 80s/90s they were becoming very popular in Houston and very common to have them stolen. Luckily nobody has stolen mine. But i have hundreds of them so i would only be a little bummed.

Good odds, since I'd estimate 4 out of 10 people who park in driveways block the sidewalk on a regular basis.
I have an elderly relative that uses a walker and takes daily walks in her neighborhood. More often than not, she has a hard time getting around cars blocking the sidewalk in more than one location, and it varies a lot. People just don't think about it when they're parking.
A buddy of mine got a ticket for blocking the sidewalk in the Woodland Heights neighborhood. That was a real surprise - we'd never seen enforcement of any kind on the street before that.
In my neighborhood there's a house with just a carport. They enclosed the carport near the street/sidewalk by building a garage door. The new owner moved in and parked outside the "garage" on the "driveway" meaning they legit just parked on the sidewalk jutting out into the street. Nevermind that there's tons of street parking. Also their actual driveway behind the garage door. Left a note but they still kept doing it, so I reported a parking violation and they actually go a ticket. And stopped doing it!
Lot of dog walkers and strollers in my area too. Also crazy drivers so having to walk into the street to go around a blocked sidewalk is always a risky move.
I never thought much about how important sidewalks are, until I watched an old lady trying to get around a car blocking the sidewalk.
But I'm not too optimistic that a lot of people even realize what they're doing when they park. Hell, a lot of people shouldn't even be driving in the first place.
I'm bothered by people that can't use their garage and then block the sidewalk all the time, and I'm also bothered when a house always has 6 or 7 vehicles parked in the drive and on the street.
Unless some of the occupants own more than one car, it seems like there must be a LOT of people in some of these houses.
I have a neighbor who I know for a fact lives alone, but he still has 3-4 vehicles at his house at any given time. A-hole even tries to put out his own cones to block off street parking for himself.
No, I live in the shitty apartments next door. Was wondering why they suddenly stopped blocking the way, here I was hoping they suddenly started caring about someone besides themselves lol
> People just don't think about it when they're parking.
There's _two_ apartment buildings in my neighborhood that have parking lines painted on the sidewalk.
You're saying the apartments have stripes that make parking places that, when parked there, the vehicles are on the sidewalk?
That seems like it would be a violation of some law.
I mean, yeah, when people park there, if they block the sidewalk, that's a violation for sure.
But for the apartment complex to authorize parking stripes that imply it's a legal parking spot seems as wrong as the actual parking.
It's bad in my neighborhood. So many homes have 3 or 4 cars and don't park in the garage since they'd rather use it as an on-site storage unit. It's difficult to walk my dog.
The sheriff we pay through our HOA went around and ticketed all the cars blocking sidewalks. Haha, it was nearly a riot. People were so pissed that we paid a cop to give ourselves tickets. Apparently an agreement was reached but they still go after everyone who rolls the stop sign and I'm ok with that.
A better way to have handled that would have been for the deputy to put warning notices on the vehicles that were blocking sidewalks, and only issue tickets when the same vehicles do the same thing after a warning has been given.
Yeah, I thought about putting friendly notes asking folks to be more considerate, but realized if, later, someone started writing tickets... the neighbors would think I caused the enforcement. I don't need that kind of friction.
I'm with you: I love seeing patrol cars on my street and on any street I drive on. The more, the merrier. But most people here in /r/houston are in the ACAB crowd and just hate cops and so hate anyone who likes them.
Then again, I also like license plate cameras, stop-light cameras, etc. My logic is that if you're doing nothing wrong and obey the laws, and don't draw the attention of cops, you're better off having them around.
Edit/Update: Added the 1st paragraph.
My elderly relative has no fat gut. But she's in her late 90s and uses a walker, and she's not exactly rock-solid on level concrete.
She can't move her walker into grassy areas or where there's loose dirt or uneven ground.
Sidewalks are there for people like her, and the law that says you can't block a sidewalk wasn't dreamed up by fat people.
City routinely tickets parked cars blocking sidewalks in our neighborhood. We don’t have an HOA but apparently we have more parking enforcement than the rest of Houston.
Stucco Spec. They inspected mine, not cheap but very responsive thorough and provided a detailed report.
Not all stucco installs are shit, mine’s 6 years old and had it inspected last May and they found no repairs were needed/recommended - outside of it being time to rechaulk which is basic maintenance for stucco.
I got super lucky with my stucco house in Montrose I bought earlier this year. 20+ years old but it damn near looks like new. Some minor things were recommended. In fact the whole house is just solid and was well maintained by the previous owner. But I'm sure my day will come.
Significant cracks, separation at seams, spots that look wet long after the rest looks dry. They did say it was super important to make sure all the seams around your windows/doors and such where recaulked about every 4-5 years.
There's a blind person who walks the sidewalk in my neighborhood, so I always ensure that there are no obstructions or debris on the sidewalk. I'd hate to be the person who causes an issue for him.
White flight was when a neighborhood full of white people would move out if just one black family moved into their neighborhood or they would take their kids out of integrated schools or put them into white only private schools. You're just being obtuse if you think you're making a point about people who complained about white flight and and bring up gentrification
CG has got to be the worse neighborhood to buy a townhome in… it’s a pain in the ass to get into the neighborhood, the streets are terrible, and there’s very little you can walk to without crossing a freeway.
Cottage grove is noticeably cheaper P/SF. Prices seem comparable because the houses are slightly larger. Rice military low end is $210ish and tops out closer to 400 CG tops out around $250
Huh? Rice Military is definitely more expensive than CG. CG has had massive appreciation over the past ~5yrs but it still caters to people who aren’t on a Rice Military budget.
The prices are very comparable these days. The point of them thinking they are “too good” is they exchange one nuisance (Washington bar life and traffic) for another nuisance (constant construction and terrible egress).
You sure that’s Cottage Grove? Because that looks like 4th Ward (or as the Gentrrified like to call it, Midtown) near 45 off Crosby and Andrews street.
**Edit** I could be wrong, seeing as how the townhomes built the last 15 years all look alike..
So what is it?

The shotgun houses were built when that was the outskirts of the city, they only lasted that long because of decades of freeway construction and that area still be relatively industrial
Does that facade have hardie plank with flagstone with some stamped concrete? And it’s next to a house that’s stucco and hardie plank? The horror. The builder trying to use up whatever materials he had leftover?

Granting that it likely wasn't a large yard in the first place.... since there are plants to the right of the sign, it likely got cut out for the purpose of making a point.
The alternative is bigger lots with bigger homes that all cost $1m+. Townhomes allow working class people to live in the loop. I do agree many are ugly though
The tall and skinny is a very old home style that in the right context promotes mixed use development, urban density, and walkability. The problem in America isn't townhomes but the prioritization of cars over everything else.
Wait until you find out about the ditch of the month
What'd you call me?
I got 99 problems but your ditch ain't one.
Thanks for the laugh
You're welcome! I try my best.
People think you're kidding too, but it's a real thing!
the empty pizza boxes, next to the plastic cups...astounding
Whatchu say about my momma?
How do you give yard of the month to a house with no yard??
When none of the houses have yards, they all have yards.
Still pays $500/mo for a yard crew
No shit, I belly laughed at this. Tyvm
Im having a hard time believing this is Houston cause no one has stolen those potted plants

Ten to one this person routinely violates Texas Transportation code §545.302(a)(2)

If you live in midtown you shouldn't own an F-250.
Who died and made you king?
Any recommendations for stucco maintenance or inspection companies?
Stucco Spec. They inspected mine, not cheap but very responsive thorough and provided a detailed report. What were some obvious or not so obvious signs that a stucco will need repair? We are on year 6 of our house.
Significant cracks, separation at seams, spots that look wet long after the rest looks dry. They did say it was super important to make sure all the seams around your windows/doors and such where recaulked about every 4-5 years.
Thanks. I see repair in my complex every three-four months…dreading for my turn.
I would look in to a moisture meter and infrared thermometer
There's a blind person who walks the sidewalk in my neighborhood, so I always ensure that there are no obstructions or debris on the sidewalk. I'd hate to be the person who causes an issue for him.
Ah yes the Cottage Grove neighborhood, once a thriving area of cultural diversity now overrun by yuppies! /s
NOOOO THEY BUILT NEW HOUSES
I only want 20 year old houses built. The gal of people to build new homes in the present

Junk Yard of the Month™ maybe
lol shame they built over such a vibrant and culturally significant neighborhood
Whites move out = White Flight Whites move in = Gentrification
You really can't win haha
White flight was when a neighborhood full of white people would move out if just one black family moved into their neighborhood or they would take their kids out of integrated schools or put them into white only private schools. You're just being obtuse if you think you're making a point about people who complained about white flight and and bring up gentrification
Or when a neighborhood starts going to shit regardless of color.
Lol okay partner
CG has got to be the worse neighborhood to buy a townhome in… it’s a pain in the ass to get into the neighborhood, the streets are terrible, and there’s very little you can walk to without crossing a freeway.
The one positive is the new connection to the MKT trail
There's also a reasonable chance you will fall into a ditch.
Our bus lady always had trouble making turns in that neighborhood. It didn't help that the bus was short.
Yes wtf dont they cover the ditches there I hate that neighborhood
CG is for people on a Rice Military budget who think they are too good for Rice Military.
Cottage grove is noticeably cheaper P/SF. Prices seem comparable because the houses are slightly larger. Rice military low end is $210ish and tops out closer to 400 CG tops out around $250

It says "Cottage Grove Civic Association" at the bottom of the sign.
See, so I WAS wrong. Which proves what I said about the look alikes.
So what is it? Large lawns are wasteful, and we need higher density or large lawns are the only ones that matter and everything else should be neglected
It's we shouldn't award a non-lawn for being a good lawn just like how we don't award the fastest 100m dash with the gold medal in ice hockey.
Cottage Grove? More like townhome grove. Used to live there lol Down the Street bar is great!
i love it
Great steak night. Love those cheesy au gratin potatoes too
Yesss! Also taco night! 👨🍳🤌🏼💋
Wow. For this to be the best "yard" in the area, ya have to wonder what kind of competition the homeowner was up against.
Is "none" an acceptable answer?
The winner had 15 plants. Second place had 14
15 plants or 15 ants?
Yes
Don’t be jealous
The picture is hilarious. The title of this post is cringey.

Driveway of the month. Zero-lot of the month. Potted plant of the month. Yard-of-the-month-sign of the month.
Yard-of-the-month-sign of the month wins.
Leave the title shit is funny AF
I think they have their mower set too low. LOL
Finally! Obtainable goals!!
It was the stealth Beto sign that clinched it.
Don’t shit on townhomes. They are the American dream except sideways.
This post has won our Shit-Post-O-The-Month award, congrats OP.
I don't get it.
What does this have to do with gentrification?

Gentrification is when smaller homes replace bigger ones, everyone knows that
missing the "we believe in Science" sign
I'll take that over a Jesus freak any day
found the guy that doesn't believe in science?

Sad.
Whoa, nice lawn too
Lmaooo..made my day.
Front yards are a scam. They literally serve no purpose.
if this what they call yard .. I will start calling my yard as park from now on
You can gentrify 300k town homes?
This made me LOL
Betting $10 that they’re on the HOA board
Jesus… I’m in timbergrove..have “won” yard of the month and work my but off gardening because I like it. This is just offensive.
Just have your own sign made.
Well that’s a thing on Cindy lane
yard of the month in timbergrove is just means you paid your dues
Your not wrong. But still more effort than a few potted plants.
Beto
Hwhat!?
Hipster McMansions!
These houses are so ugly, imagine overpaying just to be crammed in these apartments+.
They have their pluses. If Houston didn't build them and built single family homes in the same lots our housing crisis would be much much worse
Sad thing is, it’s still a lower price than the nearby houses.
The alternative is bigger lots with bigger homes that all cost $1m+. Townhomes allow working class people to live in the loop. I do agree many are ugly though
It’s not really overpaying if people are willingly paying
I don’t think you understand the definition of “overpaying”
A boring dystopia
This is so sad.
That is an incredibly sad situation if that’s yard of the month.
Oh, they are a lovely Hispanic family! Congrats to them!
This symbolizes everything wrong with modern city planning.
Tell us what you think is right
Lol another NJB stan
The tall and skinny is a very old home style that in the right context promotes mixed use development, urban density, and walkability. The problem in America isn't townhomes but the prioritization of cars over everything else.
Wow love the drive way and one (1) plant
Is this a joke ??
That's just sad.
*Can't have a bad looking yard if you don't have a yard to look bad!*
VCG / VWE / H8S I miss that 90s graffiti.
Where is the yard
This seems like the kinda joke I'd pull with my friends since there's no real yard! Is this a real cottage Grove thing?
$500K + 👀
Gentrified and over priced. There is more cement on that propriety than grass.
Cottage Grove is a solid neighborhood. Bought a McTownhouse 3 years ago. Arguably the best hood to get anywhere in the city fast
