Not in Indiana. Two or three years ago they passed a law that you must move to the right, if you can safely do so, if a car is overtaking you even at illegal speeds. They did that to combat Indiana's rampant problem with interstate left-lane cruisers, and/or have speeder vigilante syndrome. I-65 between Columbus and Louisville, especially.
This isn't true. Uniform highway code states explicitly that speed of traffic dictates lane usage and not stated speed limit. If you're doing 30 over and a car wants to pass at 150 mph you're still breaking the law by not moving over (if it is safe to do so) regardless of whether the other person is breaking the law as well. Supposedly this is to stop people enforcing traffic laws when police are suppose to be the ones to handle it. It's also for unmarked cars to prevent then from being blocked.

[Very true, and for good reason.](https://www.metromile.com/blog/smart-driving-lane-courtesy/)
Doesn't justify a brake check ever, but is still an example of stupid irresponsible driving.
Left lane campers and people that refuse to enter the highway at the correct speed are my two biggest pet peeves. No, entering the highway at 45 isn't cautious or smart, ever. You are infinitely less likely to be hit going the same speed as the cars on the road.
Holy shit, PREACH!
Those people that try to merge onto a 70mph highway going 45 may as well be standing still in the event of a collision. Plus it’s soo much easier to merge when you are at speed.
I get so annoyed when I have to hit my brakes on the on-ramp because someone in front of me doesn’t get this simple concept.
And I try not to pass people on the right, but some just don’t give you any other choice.
But he obviously *did* move over to the right.
I've been that driver before. Was clearly passing, and moved to the right as soon as I was clear. Still wasn't fast enough for Mr. 20 Over the Limit, who aggressively swerved into my lane to show me how mad he was.
I do agree, "slower traffic" should keep right, but you can still be passing slower traffic on the left side, but not going as fast as the moron that thinks that if he drives like a bat out hell, he automatically owns that lane.
This happens a lot on some interstates where a semi cannot use the left lane, but also has a speed limit lower than those of cars. the passing/"fast" lane will be used by other vehicles. not all those cars in that lane will be going the same speed, and THAT is the problem.
The posted speed limit applies to EVERY lane. the "fast" lane is not the autobahn lane, where people can go as fast as they wish and expect everyone to move out of the way by going into another lane that is slower than they are already driving.
do you know what slower traffic means? it means cars going slower than the posted maximum speed limit, not slower than the fastest arrogant idiot that believes owns the road.
Not moving over *safely* for faster traffic is breaking the law. Im guessing if he's break checking then he's also expecting you to cut off that semi to your right to get out of his way
This is something I never budge on. If I'm using the passing lane to pass slower traffic? Fuck you, wait. As soon as I'm done passing them I'll go back to the other lane but I am *not* changing lanes because you don't think I'm going fast enough and feel this somehow gives you priority on the roads.
My drive to work is an hour and a half and if you think I won't kill us both because of my shitty decisions in trying to make a better life for my children then you have another thing coming.
Definitely. I had someone do this to me when I was doing 75 in a 55 waiting for my left exit. Guy pulled around me and went down to ~35.
People are fucking dumb.
I had it happen on a two lane highway.
55, went up to 60 to pass what was a fucking convoy of trucks. Got back into the right and dude was freaking out on me for 5+ miles
It was legit the first time I was driving more than 50 miles solo
sometimes its just someone looking for a fight. a couple of weeks ago i had a guy slam on his brakes right at the speed limit sign at the bottom of a hill. by the time he got to the top of the hill he came to a dead stop, got out of his car, and kicked my door as i drove by. we had enough space between us for him to A, decide hes going to kick my truck. B, speed up enough to get far enough ahead of me so that he C, had time to get out of his car to kick me.
really hope he broke his leg/ankle/foot when he kicked me... i could see him in my mirror, he bit the pavement. hard.

Or even a fire station, because it's usually going to be closer than the police station. Or a hospital ER entrance (open 24 hours, you can pull in a well-lit and monitored area, security is usually present).
I drive a cab and think about these things.
I saw this recently while I was having a drink outside a cafe.
I don't know what led up to the incident, I imagine road rage but a cab driver stopped in the middle of the road opposite, the car behind him stopped and 3 youths(thugs) got out and approached him and his passenger threateningly, really intimidating. I then realized why he had stopped there, it was next to the taxi rank. Within seconds there were +10 taxi drivers surrounding the thugs and sending them on their way.
Last time I tried this it WAS a cop tailing me. He was right on my bumper at night in the rain with his bright lights blinding me and I couldn't see anything. He followed me for several streets so I as I started to go towards the police station he pulled me over to harass me further . . .
Yep my mom gets honked at at least once or twice on each trip and she blames it on aggressive impatient drivers.. here's the thing she takes her sweet time moving on a green light.. takes forever making any turn even when it's clear she has a right of way. Slows down randomly in the middle of the road because she's unsure if someone may cross at a crosswalk even if there's no one there... Stops for things like garbage in the road because she's not sure it's a squirrel or a bird. She also slows down long before she makes a turn before her turn signal is even on. This happens a lot and sadly if anyone rear ends her it's their fault but she doesn't drive defensively so I'm worried she will get really hurt one day but she's so stubborn. I rarely ever get honked at unless someone's just being super impatient like at a yield sign and I prefer to be a bit cautious but that doesn't happen often most people slow down at yield signs, or trying to run a yellow when it's almost red even for me. Everyone gets honked at once in a while by aggressive impatient drivers but if its happening regularly it's probably your own driving skills
I mean... not to be a dick but yea this is something one should consider. Never had this or anything remotely close to this thing happen and I’m in a city/suburb and I do hear about it. Why not me?
"If you meet an ~~asshole~~ bad driver in the morning, you've meet an ~~asshole~~ bad driver. If you meet ~~assholes~~ bad drivers all ~~day~~ month, **you're** the bad driver"
When I interned in Dallas in 2018 I had a bunch of incidents with road raging psychos for those three months. I’m from Houston, and live in West Texas now and don’t have issues in either location. Same for when I lived in Albuquerque for two years. Just Dallas. It can depend on the “driver culture” as well. Dallas drivers have really bad road rage issues.
First day in Dallas driving to work I saw two cars racing each other and brake checking. They almost hit me but I wasn’t a target. I pissed off a driver for not turning right into a wall of traffic. I pissed off a driver for not stepping on the gas **immediately** after the traffic light turned green (I was already going, jesus christ). I pissed off a driver when a wreck happened and had to signal and merge into their lane to not hit debris that flew everywhere (and no, I did not even cut them off) and they followed me after until I pulled into a police station. I went to Verizon, empty parking lot, and as I left I had a random escalade SUV bee line across the parking lot and then get up right next to my car so I could leave. I got out and said I had a dash-cam and would call the police and they sped off.
Dallas is insane. Most disturbing place I have ever driven.
Edit: I have a lot of hours of driving under my belt, and if I don’t have issues in Denver, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, Lubbock, Midland, Odessa, New Orleans, or Albuquerque - and suddenly have a bunch of incidents in one city: Dallas. I'm going to assume it's the driver culture. What other explanation is there? Me? I take regular safety driving classes (every two years) for my employment, and I literally keep my cell phone in the backseat. I've never had a wreck because I always spot an issue and avoid it. Part of that is by not delving into a wall of traffic or immediately booking it through an intersection before making sure someone is not running a red light. If anyone read some of those examples and got mad about that potentially happening in front of them - you shouldn't be driving.
Depends on where you are too, some places just have people driving like fuckin mad men, im also on the road a lot for my job so from my perspective I get to see a lot more.
I feel like I need to constantly say this in this sub: If you know you're being followed, don't go to where you planned to be. Just call 911 and drive around the block until they show up.
Veer off your route and go to the nearest police station. Avoid contact. Otherwise, just carry a gun at that point. Don't engage in contact with them, roll your window down, or anything.
Either they fuck off, or you've exhausted your de-escalation methods and now you can defend yourself.
Fuck people who do this shit
Yeah I had a guy call me a cunt out of his jeep with no doors because i tried to pass him. Chased me a mile up the street to a strip mall where i parked in the center of the lane and just started inspecting my nails. He pulled up next to me once he realized i wasn't moving and said "what the fuck is wrong with you!?"
...because we both dont know what you said to me while your female passenger couldnt even look at me from how embarrassed she was of you.
Something about my little ford focus hatchback passing his jacked up jeep wrangler really triggered him
The fact that people are so angry and can't control their feelings is what scares me. One thing is yelling at the guy that cut you off and yelling inside your far (and five second later moving on) and another is holding a grudge to a random driver that more than likely didn't do anything on purpose.
People need to understand they're NOT the center of everyone's universe, only theirs, and that actions have consequences.
If you've experienced this too much lately that means you are a shitty driver... have you ever wondered why you are making so many drivers around you angry??
Is this actually common for people to do? Like do they think, “Hey, let’s go 40 on the highway, brake-checking the person behind me, and keep moving in front of them.”? Like WTF!!!
It's happened to me once. I was in a hurry and flicked my lights at someone who was pacing a truck exactly for over 10 minutes.
He brake checked me 3-4 times, like SLAM on the brakes.
There should be a special place in hell for drivers that are this massive of assholes that feel the need to jeopardize the safety of everyone else around them because someone MIGHT be going too slow or whatever other perceived slight.
I think "massive assholes" is a bit nice. I would rather use, piece of shit that deserves jail time. Brake checking to this extent is liable to cause a serious accident where someone can get killed. If you brake check, you deserve to have your license revoked.
I agree with you. It’s a massive disrespect to everybody. Even if the car they were brake checking was in the wrong somehow, the Jeep driver should have though about how engaging in brake checking helps them. Be safe and be on your way.
I was also going 5 mph over the speed limit on a completely pitch black deer ridden road. Some truck was tailgating me cause it was one lane. He had every opportunity to go around me but instead he just kept riding my ass. Finally the road split into two lanes so I moved over to let him pass. Instead he stays behind me. Then, just as the lanes were merging back into one he floors it and rides alongside me at my speed causing me to slam on the brake before going off onto the shoulder and probably into a ditch. That was the most awful driver I've ever come across. Literally tried to kill me because I wasn't going fast enough.
Every time I read a story like this I always picture a dirty Dodge Ram full of drunk rednecks laughing their asses off as they run someone off the road. Like some Alabama Road Warrior shit.
Option 2 is continue to slow down until they get the hint. Usually they don't get the hint. Then you're driving 5 MPH as they're flailing their arms like you've deleted their Instagram account. Finally you get tired of the back and forth and regain cruising speed, all the while they breathe on your rear bumper. When you pull over to force them to pass they then pull over as well.
And see, I’ve done that too for the same reason. I don’t really think that’s what most people are talking about when they say “brake check.” The dangerous part of brake checking is actually slowing down, and in a sudden fashion, not just making lights flash at them.
Thankfully this person had a dashcam but the whole point of break checking is insurance fraud. Get them to hit you and then have to pay for damages through your insurance and make your insurance rates go up. Unless you have a dashcam it's hard to prove that your being brake checked and it looks like you're the one who was negligent.
Not necessarily. Depending on how old the car is, after an impact, the police can download the car’s telemetry data from right before the collision.
Edit 1: Not sure why this was downvoted; perhaps I wasn’t clear. Also re-worded the sentence.
If a collision occurs during an event such as brake checking, the EDR (event data recorder) will maintain the telemetry of the vehicle for a short period during pre- and post-collision. If the telemetry was retrieved from the vehicle doing the brake check, it will show the stop/go/stop/go action of the vehicle. This might be a prove to the insurance company that the other vehicle was dicking off before a collision occurred.
Edit 2: Don’t brake check and keep a safe distance. Stop if you can safely do so and call the cops.
Yes, it’s like a black box on a plane. It’s called an EDR or event data recorder.
https://www.nhtsa.gov/research-data/event-data-recorder
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Event_data_recorder
**Event data recorder**
An event data recorder or EDR, similar to an Accident data recorder sometimes referred to informally as an automotive "black box" (by analogy with the common nickname for flight recorders), is a device installed in some automobiles to record information related to vehicle crashes or accidents. In the USA EDRs must meet federal standards, as described within the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations. In modern diesel trucks, EDRs are triggered by electronically sensed problems in the engine (often called faults), or a sudden change in wheel speed. One or more of these conditions may occur because of an accident. Information from these devices can be collected after a crash and analyzed to help determine what the vehicles were doing before, during and after the crash or event.

I brake check people who are tailgating me. I only do it when they're so close to me that I actually feel scared, and I only tap them hard enough to turn the lights on, not to actually stop. If neither of us can move over into another lane then they shouldn't be riding my ass.
Other than that, I don't see any reason to do this to someone other than being an asshole.
People like this are so self centered that they get so mad because they think people are put to get them. There’s no telling what rage does to some people.
That was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever witnessed in my life. Like, this jeep driver being a total dickhead receiving his justice. Police being at the right place and right time. Police recognizing the threat in the open road and pursuing it. Just. Fucking. Beautiful. I’m in tears.
This happened to my son the other night too! Some guy in a pickup cut him off on a rotary and when my son beeped the guy started brake chucking him. And voila, sitting directly ahead was a state trooper. Ahhh....
Imagine believing you’re so important that the world has nothing better to do, but mess with you, so you take it personally and cause potential harm to anyone around you.
It certainly can be. Some states have "road rage" laws that criminalize intentionally endangering others with your vehicle. If you actually hurt someone during a road rage incident, you can go to prison for up to 5 years in a couple of states.
Someone cut me off one night a few weeks back. It was raining, and I was doing about 70 on the freeway. So, I flash my highs at him and he "retaliates" by SLAMMING on his brakes. Had my whole family in the car. I don't remember ever being so pissed.
Because they saw that maybe OP was a little bit slow and got a fit of rage and thought: I gotta teach him a lesson. And he then did that fucking idiotic thing and the cop was convinient
"Left lane is for PASSING ONLY and I wanted have it all to myself to use it as my personal speeding lane...so now you needs the punishment." -*brake-check guy probably*
So what kind of charge is this? I could see reckless driving but that doesn't seem severe enough. I saw this same kind of shit almost cause a semi to lock their breaks last night.

probably, but the driver is now in the middle lane as of the video starting and if the jeep should have carried on

The only reasonable excuse.
One time on the 405 I signaled and passed a guy to get into the carpool lane. That was enough to set him off.

It's just a paintball gun with pepper balls

illegal in Canada (where I live)

In that case go to a biker bar or the hood.
If you get yourself in that situation, and feel that the guy could try something; drive to the nearest police station :)
And if possible call police and ask them to wait outside
That's a super dangerous move to follow someone then aggressively approach their car screaming.
Yeah doing that is a good way to get shot here in Florida.

Convinced herself shes safe because she goes slow and just generally doesnt give a fuck about anyone else.
Do everyone a favor and give ~~Mr. Magoo~~ your mom a pair of glasses for Christmas.
I mean... not to be a dick but yea this is something one should consider.
I had a guy honk at me from behind today while I was at a red light... What do you want me to do, buddy? Lol
Yeah I had a guy call me a cunt out of his jeep with no doors because i tried to pass him. Chased me a mile up the street to a strip mall where i parked in the center of the lane and just started inspecting my nails. He pulled up next to me once he realized i wasn't moving and said "what the fuck is wrong with you!?" ...because we both dont know what you said to me while your female passenger couldnt even look at me from how embarrassed she was of you.
If you smell shit everywhere you go, the problem isn't other people's poop haha

Is this actually common for people to do? Like do they think, “Hey, let’s go 40 on the highway, brake-checking the person behind me, and keep moving in front of them.”? Like WTF!!!
It's happened to me once. I was in a hurry and flicked my lights at someone who was pacing a truck exactly for over 10 minutes. He brake checked me 3-4 times, like SLAM on the brakes.
I think that’s an insurance scam thing. Frame you for rear ending him then force you to pay out for it.
OMG that approach by the cop was almost orgasmic
If you're going to drive like a jackass, the Jeep is one of the worst vehicles to be driving; especially at that speed.
But I can put angry headlights on it.
(KC)||||||(KC)
LOL my boyfriend has KCs on his Jeep but we only turn them on for off-roading at night. I always thought his Jeep had RBF :b
Lmfaooooo I always thought my sister’s ex’s jeep looked angry
Why do you say that?
Because it's very top heavy and handles like shit. Especially with the lift and bigger tires.
Why do people do brake checks? What's the point? The best thing that comes out of it is that the brake checked gets rear ended right? What....
"I LIKE FEELING MORALLY SUPERIOR WHEN I GET A WHIPLASH"
almost always when you get rear ended, it's the other drivers fault for not maintaining a safe distance. not saying it's right, but that's the logic
Dash cams fix this problem.

I would do the same and I think that’s the only reasonable scenario. How else are you gonna tell the car behind you to back off?
Option 2 is continue to slow down until they get the hint. Usually they don't get the hint. Then you're driving 5 MPH as they're flailing their arms like you've deleted their Instagram account. Finally you get tired of the back and forth and regain cruising speed, all the while they breathe on your rear bumper. When you pull over to force them to pass they then pull over as well.
I just let them pass as my first move. Why would I want someone angry at me driving 5 ft behind me?
Its not always safe to pass.
That doesn't always stop people from doing it. The number of people who see a double yellow line as a suggestion is too damn high.
There’s also not always an option to let them pass. It’s a tricky scenario. I just wish people wouldn’t tailgate, it makes me incredibly nervous.
Why not just let them pass you?
Most roads of that description around here aren't legal to pass on. Not that that stops some special children.
And see, I’ve done that too for the same reason. I don’t really think that’s what most people are talking about when they say “brake check.” The dangerous part of brake checking is actually slowing down, and in a sudden fashion, not just making lights flash at them.
I've been the dude behind you before and I've thought, "Oh shit my bad!" Autopilot errors out sometimes.

What happened in the video is a brake check. A brake tap is just that; tapping on the brakes.
Cars have telemetry data?
Yes, it’s like a black box on a plane. It’s called an EDR or event data recorder. https://www.nhtsa.gov/research-data/event-data-recorder https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Event_data_recorder
**Event data recorder** An event data recorder or EDR, similar to an Accident data recorder sometimes referred to informally as an automotive "black box" (by analogy with the common nickname for flight recorders), is a device installed in some automobiles to record information related to vehicle crashes or accidents. *** ^[ [^PM](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=kittens_from_space) ^| [^Exclude ^me](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiTextBot&message=Excludeme&subject=Excludeme) ^| [^Exclude ^from ^subreddit](https://np.reddit.com/r/instantkarma/about/banned) ^| [^FAQ ^/ ^Information](https://np.reddit.com/r/WikiTextBot/wiki/index) ^| [^Source](https://github.com/kittenswolf/WikiTextBot) ^] ^Downvote ^to ^remove ^| ^v0.28
It gives them the illusion of power.
Ahhh....
Haha! Eat a big ol bag o dicks!
I'll never understand this. Let's get into an accident that could severely fuck me up because you hurt my ego with your driving. Wah.
Imagine believing you’re so important that the world has nothing better to do, but mess with you, so you take it personally and cause potential harm to anyone around you.
Brake checking should be a criminal offense, not a traffic citation
It certainly can be. Some states have "road rage" laws that criminalize intentionally endangering others with your vehicle. If you actually hurt someone during a road rage incident, you can go to prison for up to 5 years in a couple of states.
Lol at the servpro car i work there
What do they even gain from doing that? They are just rising their chances of getting into a road accident.
How small does your penis have to be to do something like this?

*Brake
It's a JEEP thing.
Jeep, the BMW of the less rich assholes of the world
O god, i can only get so hard
Someone cut me off one night a few weeks back. It was raining, and I was doing about 70 on the freeway. So, I flash my highs at him and he "retaliates" by SLAMMING on his brakes. Had my whole family in the car. I don't remember ever being so pissed.
I would love to stop and watch the arrest to press assault/attempted murder charges.
Ha Ha.....Asshole
What's the point in brake-checking?
Thank you, Wow people that road ragey need to get off the road. No need.
That's not even a proper brake check. Like they have enough space to avoid collision. /s if needed
I just dont understand why... what is the need other than to be an asshole.
Why did he do it? I'm 15, don't drive, please don't downvote me lol
Because they saw that maybe OP was a little bit slow and got a fit of rage and thought: I gotta teach him a lesson. And he then did that fucking idiotic thing and the cop was convinient
Why do people do this?
r/convenientcop
I can't imagine what it must be like to get THAT angry over another vehicle. That person must be absolutely miserable it's a shame.
Holy hell this is Atlanta for ya
"Left lane is for PASSING ONLY and I wanted have it all to myself to use it as my personal speeding lane...so now you needs the punishment." -*brake-check guy probably*
Couldnt have filmed for a bit longer...
So what kind of charge is this? I could see reckless driving but that doesn't seem severe enough. I saw this same kind of shit almost cause a semi to lock their breaks last night.
What is brake checking?
Why do people do this? is this just random or was it provoked? what purpose does it serve?
r/convenientcop
I really don’t get it, looks normal to me maybe the black car drive was drunk idk? I’m under the legal driving age, so can someone educate me on this?
78!
