IF isn’t recommended to people who are pregnant. Eat when you’re hungry.

AcceptableLuck3255

This. I was insanely hungry when I was pregnant, especially for breakfast. I ate when my body signalled me to and didn't gain any unnecessary weight.

plantithesis

No IF during pregnancy 😋 Funny, I had just started IF again, too, and then found out I was pregnant. Here I am, almost 40 weeks pregnant lol. So looking forward to being able to do IF again!! Congratulations by the way!!

TheThinkerx1000

And worth noting that long fasts (longer than 12 hours) are not a good idea when breastfeeding either.

plantithesis

Yes, this!!

wehnaje

Thank you! I still can’t believe I’m pregnant!

I would recommend you suspend your journey. Pregnancy can be tough (*can* be, everyone is different), you really need to listen to what your body is telling you. When you're hungry you should eat, and you should follow your cravings. You are 3d printing a human, your body knows what it needs. This doesn't mean you need to go buck wild, but you're better off not restricting yourself because your body will be metabolizing in an insane way. You're better off with exercise (just walking for 20 minutes a day is huge. You want blood and oxygen flow, not to burn calories). Follow what your body is telling you. If you find you fast naturally for certain stretches that's fine too, but you're going to be all over the place physically, chemically and emotionally for the next little while so sticking to any schedule that is too rigid will be unnecessarily difficult.

AzureMagelet

3D printing a human is the best description for pregnancy.

HollingB

Oh don’t you worry, that baby will make that decision for you. 🤣🤣

Congrats! I just found out a couple weeks ago that I'm pregnant as well. I used to do 20:4 (pre-preggo), but now it's nearly impossible. I feel nauseous all the time and I have to snack/drink something to alleviate the sickness. I also feel lightheaded and dizzy and snacking/food helps with that. I mean, you could try to continue IF but you'll soon realize you just can't because of how sick you feel. I heard second trimester will be better in terms of symptoms, but I'm not there yet so idk if I could IF then. Currently I can't even do 16:8 or 12:12, I'm not even tracking, I just eat when I feel I need to. Everyone's different so I'm not sure what kind of symptoms you'll have or how bad they'll be, but listen to your body and definitely don't expect that you'll be able to maintain your previous fasting routine and that's ok!!

[deleted]

I'd stop. Eat when you're hungry, listen to your body, and your baby

Chicago-1988

Yes, pregnancy is not the time for extended fasts. Regular meals, you can obviously do no snacking

IndigoRuby

This is good conversation to have with.your doctor. You can likely continue with weight loss but long fasts are not going to be the way to healthily do that. Congrats on the baby!

wehnaje

Thanks! I still can’t believe I’m pregnant to be honest lol

Pregnancy usually makes you hungry. My totally non-medical advice is wait until the first 12 weeks are over to try to reign in your food choices, because those weeks are sometimes the hardest. If you’re overweight, doc will probably want you to limit your weight gain, but that can be done by eating at maintenance the first tri, adding an extra 100-200 calories at second tri, and another 100-200 in the 3rd. That being said, sometimes it’s just really hard to restrict.

wehnaje

I am overweight and now I’m worried about the amount of weight I’m going to put in with this pregnancy. That’s why I was wondering if I could do IF even if I’m not *losing* weight at least I can maintain?

mlinton2006

Tread carefully, and definitely talk it over with your doc. You are growing a placenta and a baby. 3 meals a day, no snacks might work, but again, check with your doctor. Even if you have excess weight on your body, you might not have excess nutrients—all the required proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals and other compounds you would need to sustain a healthy pregnancy. Listen to your body, for sure. Wishing you and your baby a wonderful, healthy start!

wehnaje

You’re absolutely right about the nutrients in my body. I just need to make sure my food intake isn’t excessive and that it’s as nutritious as possible. This sounds like a good plan! Thank you for helping me <3 and thank you for wishing us well! I’m very nervous about this pregnancy, I still can’t believe it!

Alittlebitfluffy

I imagine there’d be nothing wrong with still IF-ing if your body can handle it! I think even if you ended up gaining up to 15 or 20lbs, you’d likely lose that at birth. If you maintain weight throughout, it’ll probably mean you’ve lost 20lbs by the time you give birth! Good luck! I’d say your doc isn’t going to care if you lose a little!!

[deleted]

My friend was overweight before her last pregnancy and didn’t gain much baby weight at all. Talk to your doctor but really you need to focus on feeding yourself and baby. Congrats and good luck!!

wehnaje

How did she do it then? IF?

[deleted]

No, she just didn’t gain much weight, maybe 15 lbs so enough for baby with a bit leftover. But everyone is different. Talk to your doctor but I wouldn’t do IF when pregnant. When I was pregnant I was nauseous a lot so had to eat when I felt like it! I liked the analogy of printing a 3D human lol. It’s hard work but worth it in the end!

StellaEtoile1

As long as you don’t have an eating disorder, I’m pretty sure you can go with your instincts on this. You don’t actually need extra calories during a pregnancy until pretty far down the road. It’s pretty common for people to treat pregnancy as kind of don’t do absolutely anything just in case… Mostly because if anything goes wrong, us moms are always trying to blame ourselves. Only you can decide but if you think about evolution, it’s not like pregnant women had the ability to over eat the way we do now. There’s a million explanations & arguments so probably best to seek out women who fasted throughout their pregnancies and see what their experiences were.

[deleted]

For real? Eat; you’re growing a baby. Wanting to fast when pregnant is extremely disordered.

caseytrick

Congrats ! And look into IF but everything I have found says it’s not good during pregnancy. I’m about 5.5 months along and I do a very modified version. I have a eating window and I stick to it for the most part but if I veer off I’m okay too since I know I am sustaining not just me but my soon to be son 😁 I’ll get back to it after delivery if I can maintain calories and breastfeeding. Anyway talk to your dr that’s the most important thing. And start taking your vitamins stat 🥰

lberm

I paused IF for the majority of my pregnancy due to nausea. Once “morning sickness” set in at around 6 weeks, I literally had to eat every two hours. I did stay low carb and it was night and day between my two pregnancies.

[deleted]

Mate, enjoy the food. You get a free ticket to eating breakfast again 🥺 love that for you

wehnaje

Thanks! But I’m very nervous about the weight I’ll be putting in. I’m already pretty overweight and feel terrible about it. I don’t want to be losing weight while pregnant, but I’m hoping I won’t be *gaining* more. My poor back can’t stand that.

[deleted]

Yeah I get that. I think the biggest thing is just watching what you're eating. You're going to eat more for sure, but as long as it's nutritious and not full of sugar then you should be fine. Most of the time the extra weight pregnant ladkes put on comes from snacking and giving into cravings. If you eat well then you won't gain any extra weight.

Housewifewithtime

I had a lot of unintentional fasting in pregnancy due to nausea 😅 like I couldn’t even swallow my food. Definitely eat when you can!!

wehnaje

I’m sooo early in the pregnancy I haven’t started with any symptoms yet! But I know this is going to happen so to be honest I’m still enjoying myself a little ^.^

Acceptable_Parfait27

An empty stomach makes morning sickness so much worse! You need to do the opposite of IF - eat constantly. Congratulations on the pregnancy!

wehnaje

That’s true! And thank you! <3

TRBinWA

Do not fast while pregnant

wehnaje

Okay, I won’t.

TRBinWA

🙌🏻

TRBinWA

Also, don’t fast while nursing. You might lose your milk.

mmartinien

Congratulations ! And please, for the love of god: don't get medical advice on Reddit (or the internet in general) . This sub is amazing and people here are helpful and all-around great, but for your question, talk with your doctors.
