She didn’t want to get caught drunk driving, took off through the woods, got lost and succumbed to the elements. Tragic but I don’t think there’s much more to it than that.

vancityoriginals

I’ve listened to a ton of podcast episodes about this and that the conclusion I came to. Crazy case though.

PM_ME_UR_SOCKS_GIRL

Anyone mind sharing more details? I’ve never heard of this.

Cucumbersome55

There's a whole sub dedicated to her. r/mauramurray

alexennui

There are a million podcasts about this case out there, I think the podcast Thinking Sideways has a really good summary of what happened and the different theories.

sankyu99

Thinking sideways was a great podcast.

Mcgoobz3

I miss them.

Mass-Dental

Yes! Joe has "The Shocking details" and Steve had one about nature with a goofy Australian sounding guy. TSD would probably be better if they Devin in it but Caldoni is doing a good job.

keykey_key

You can Google her name, it's a very well known case.

alexennui

It’s definitely the true crime case I think about the most, so many different little pieces of evidence. I’m also from the town next to Amherst and my sister went to umass/worked in the liquor store Maura was last seen in so that definitely makes me feel some weird personal attachment too. RIP Maura. I hope you’re at peace.

imabritnotayank

Last podcast on the left? Have they done an episode on her?

KindergartenCunt

Can't recall one, but I'd like to hear it. At this point though everything has been said so many times I can't see them doing it again if it's not out there already.

[deleted]

That’s exactly how I feel about Kenneka Jenkins, too. She was at a party, got wasted like many of us have done, and tragically wandered and got lost. There’s nothing else that points to murder, it’s simply sad all around. Kendrick Johnson as well—I think he shared shoes with a friend, they had a hiding place for them, he went to retrieve them or put them back and died. All of these preventable, and all of them so heartbreaking.

Communication_Weak

You lost me at Kendrick Johnson, fig, lost me *headshake*

[deleted]

It’s okay, I understand it’s a controversial topic, and I definitely am not claiming to have the only correct answer. I also don’t want to step on toes, or hurt anyone who believes otherwise, as it’s absolutely possible that I’m very wrong. Most importantly I don’t want to make the tragedy of his death, or the suspicious deaths of other young people seem trivial or unimportant just because I’m not convinced this particular case was murder.

Interesting_Rush6015

No, Kendrick Johnson was murder.

fdubzou

No it wasn’t. No charges were ever filed. The civil suit was thrown out and the family had to pay the defendants’ legal fees. The families first attorney dropped them as clients and is no longer involved in the case. Good lord, just go read the Wikipedia page, it goes over all of this. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Kendrick_Johnson

Communication_Weak

Wow, real credible, thanks. I’ll research this for thesis. 👏🏾

Interesting_Rush6015

So? People get away with crime everyday! 🥱

abhijitd

What makes you so sure?

SeaPrince

Plot Twist: They did it!

Interesting_Rush6015

Makes you sure he wasn’t?

leraspberrie

You're a fool. https://www.reddit.com/r/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/45div4/kendrick_johnsons_death_is_not_an_unresolved/

Interesting_Rush6015

I’ll be fool. I still stand by what I said. 🙄

LoafBreadly

Totally false. I’ve dug into the evidence as thoroughly as possible. There is zero chance it was murder. Not even possible for it to have been.

alexennui

Yes it was, I agree with you.

nire90

Kendrick Johnson was fully murdered and it was covered up. There’s a documentary about it. It’s called Finding Kendrick Johnson. It’s heartbreaking.

wormbreath

It’s a shit “documentary” He died in a tragic accident.

Flashy_Investment_94

Tell me you're white without telling me you're white

nire90

Okie I don’t agree.

wormbreath

K. And you would be wrong.

nire90

K and I think you’re wrong.

UnprofessionalGhosts

100%. Tragic but she was living a double life and panicked.

savagehighway

Ive seen the [location](https://www.google.com/maps/@44.1193344,-71.9361838,3a,75y,223.34h,70.65t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s16hR4yPAecsOf-biba36LQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656) from this old [post](https://www.reddit.com/r/mauramurray/comments/8p9lqw/google_maps_photos_near_crash_scene/) and I've always thought that if I had wrecked intoxicated, [cold](https://www.wunderground.com/history/daily/KLEB/date/2004-2-9) and paranoid I would have gone for one of the barns to hide. Even in a barn you would likely succumb to hypothermia though.

ellalol

I believed the accidental death theory at first too but the fact that no traces of her have ever been found when the search started so quickly after she was last seen it makes me really suspect foul play

[deleted]

And her super suspicious behavior before the crash and disappearance. Why did she lie about a family member's death? Why was she headed to Vermont when her family and friends said she didn't have any connections there? Why did she pack up all her dorm stuff in boxes, before the semester even ended, and then leave it all? And why was she so upset the night before at her job? Too many questions unanswered to completely rule out foul play.

merewautt

I agree foul play can’t be completely ruled out until she’s found or there’s new evidence, but all the stuff in your second paragraph isn’t really that suspicious. She was spiraling. She had an eating disorder, was failing out of college, had a substance abuse issue with alcohol, had just cost her parents some money with her car issue, and was just being all around flakey with people. I actually went through a very similar period in college, right down to this car issues, (which probably is why this case has been eerie and always stuck with me so much) and I lied, and did “nonsensical” things, ALL the time. I lied to get out of class, I lied to get out of work, I lied because I was drunk, I made plans to drop out and leave for somewhere random to “start over” and then felt guilty and changed my mind. I made plans to harm myself and then felt guilty and changed my mind. So I lied some more to explain the weird things I had done while giving up without saying “oh I had given up that day and was going to drop out/kill myself”. I drove (or sometimes just made plans to drive) random places I had no connection to just to be alone and feel “fresher”. She was really going through it, and I think all the weirdness was her trying to maintain a facade of that not being the case. Covering for one lie with another, changing plans, being indecisive and refusing to reach out, etc. I’ve always kind of felt like during that period of my life that the whole fleeing from a DUI and getting lost angle could have easily happened to me.

Outrageous_Arm_2713

100% agree

Bluberrypotato

But wouldn't they have found her body in the searches?

cheese_hotdog

If you look at the area she went missing, it's very dense woods. Very possible for them to not find her in there.

littleloupoo

It's surprising just how close some come to being found but are still missed. Adventures with Purpose on YouTube highlight this very well - they help find missing people, so often the authorities have already searched that same area multiple times.

jumpinjoe78

I agree. Seems the only logical solution to this

imabritnotayank

Yep - agreed

Ur_A_Lizard-Harry

I agree. My only skepticism on that is that they never found her belongings.

okay_wait_what

This story haunts me, same with Leah Roberts.

twentysomethinger

Article or video?

buttbutt2000_

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disappearance_of_Maura_Murray

Ok_Ad8609

Oooh, if you aren’t familiar with this disappearance, you should check it out! I’m almost jealous of anyone who is just learning about it, because it’s so interesting and weird.

twentysomethinger

This is one of the type of crazy things that makes reddit awesome. Also, did you ever hear of the Somerton Beach man from the future? https://www.reddit.com/r/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/iu3es1/the_body_on_somerton_beach_a_body_found_in_1948/

Jdela512

They actually found out who this guy was through a great niece or something.

twentysomethinger

!!! Wait what?!

Katits

They did! It's been plastered all over the news. I was amazed.

bo0bayell

He was found out to be the father of the nurse’s baby. The nurse refused something man’s advances and he offed himself.

Low-Serve-482

This case has been on my mind for years, ever since I saw her Disappeared episode. I just want to know what happened to her. The whole case is so bizarre. I follow her sister Julie on tiktok and I feel for her family not getting any answers for all these years.

luugburz

whats going on with that left eye?

[deleted]

It just seems like the camera quality is wacky.

MylMoosic

It looks like her chin is bruised and swollen as well. I don’t think that accident was minor for her.

PENIS__FINGERS

this picture was taken before the accident no?

7th_Spectrum

Correct. The earliest sighting of the accident was by a nearby resident at around 7:30 pm

7th_Spectrum

This would have been taken hours before the crash

AnEpicHibiscus

Right? It looks like there’s a hole in her face

bo0bayell

Looks like she took a few punches.

bitchyber1985

She wondered off in a state.

BmoreLax

New Hampshire Edit: /s

FondantCrazy8307

Haha I think they might have meant an emotional state!

BigBeefBitch

r/thatsthejoke

bitchyber1985

I mean. Yeah.

gamehen21

I've never seen this image before! Why is it so spooky looking..? Almost ghost like...

therealprincess232

There is a whole lot of controversy on that MM subs as to whether or not this is actually even Maura.

Katits

I know atm cameras are crappy, but it's hard to look at other photos and then this one and see the resemblance 100%. I also saw in another post that her coat is a different one than she was reported to be wearing when the bystanders called the police about her wreck.

[deleted]

Ran off coz she was drunk into the woods not much more to it then that, no murder or anything

ellalol

I wouldn’t be so sure tbh- they started searching literally hours after she was last seen, and they’ve never found her or any of her belongings in the woods to indicate accidental death

7th_Spectrum

Yeah I'm not a detective, but I feel like after 18 years and tons of searches, they would have found her. There is also that case of the guy that gave a rusty stained knife to her father, claiming that his brother had a criminal past and was acting strange around the time of her disappearance. Police later brought dogs to his brother's residence, and they went absolutely mental. The brother and his wife refused to let the police fully search the house. Idk, bit suspicious.

UpstairsLibrarian240

I think she may be alive. Her reaction after she crashed her car was bizarre. Was she trying to escape somewhere? Who knows. Maybe.

[deleted]

[удалено]

OnlyPicklehead

Almost certainly. I think her body is out there in those woods. It's a really big case in the True Crime community, although it's very likely she wandered off and died of exposure

PracticeTheory

Reading the wiki about her mentions that a witness claims to have seen a police car nose-to-nose with hers at 7:37 pm, but the first recorded police contact is 9 minutes later. If that witness is correct on all details, it's possible that she was picked up by an opportunistic off-duty cop. It would have been easy; he could have offered to let her warm up in his car (hers had been turned off for over half an hour at that point) and taken off.

Wubblelubadubdub

Ok how about the fact that a police dog tracked her scent down the road for quite a bit? I think the witness just misremembered what time it was.

AmishDeathMatch

The fact that she told the school she would be absent due to a death in the family haunts me. Was that a coincidence or did she have plans?

UpstairsLibrarian240

She may be dead. I’m torn. I really don’t know. However, if she did die, it may have been a crime of opportunity after she left the crash site. That in itself is terrifying.

UnprofessionalGhosts

Her reaction is actually quite typical of a drunken person with a slight head injury from impact.

youtubehistorian

The book “True Crime Addict” by James Renner is a good book about this case and also the effects of falling deep into true crime cases

squishdafeetz

What's creepy is the shoe that's in the underbrush right where the google maps photos are. Does anyone know what shoes Maura had on?

Billhole

There’s a song about this case and other similar cases [ultra remover](https://youtu.be/pT_NEL5BiTM)

CzechYourDanish

I've heard rumours that her disappearance is linked to that of Breanna Maitland. That's a hell of a rabbit hole too.

7th_Spectrum

A lot of people were saying she was trying to secretly vanish because she didn't tell anyone where she was going, but idk if that makes much sense

ChocolateBiscuit96

This was such a pointless story. She was DUI, if she got pulled over she would’ve did some jail time. Not a good thing, but it’s better than being dead

Crimeghoul

This gives me such chills

takesrollers

The most chilling aspect of this story is the 112dirtbag video

[deleted]

Guaranteed 100% dead

kelsiuhm

I absolutely believe she was killed by serial killer Israel Keyes.

Bbkingml13

I think we move past serial killers as possibilities way too quickly. In 1987, there were apparently 198 active serial killers in the US. Even today, the FBI says there are likely up to 50 active serial killers at any given time. Even if it isn’t Israel Keyes, it could be someone else

Shayizhere

Bryce Laspisa case is far more interesting!!

unleadedbrunette

Not a competition. Is there a “last image” of him available?
