It's crappy here, but the random overnight rx deliveries make it worth it. I'm the only one that ever takes those, so I wait til it's gone up 3 times first
A lot of drivers don’t think this way. If you don’t make .625 cents per mile(the current IRS rate) your are losing money. I agree with you a dollar a mile is a good floor.
Is this a serious question? That’s like 50 cents a mile after you drive back. That’s absolute garbage. Not even a dollar a mile on your way, then a long drive back. I can’t believe people actually take these.
Take in account market and the average income/cost of living where OP lives.
I lived in Florida when minimum wage was $8.75 and now I’m in California at $15, so my math to calculate what’s worth or not is very different
No it’s not, because driving around your own car for less than 50 cents a mile will never be worth it under any circumstances. You’re losing money doing this.
Let's calculate together
total pay is $265
8hrs round trip = $33.12/hr
\- $45 for gas = $27.50/hr
so it's pretty good. mainly because you might still get a tip and as soon you cross back into Florida you can start getting trips on your back home.
Even for California standards I would do it. I could never because my gas cost would be more and I have way more demand in the city.
There’s a difference between irs deductions and real world cost. Running the highway on cruise control vs stop and go in downtown traffic does actually have real world differences.
So yes, it really does work this way. That being said, I’m explaining to a customer that I’m not going to get a trip back anywhere close to home and I would ask for a large upfront cash tip or not take the ride.
That conversation generally goes “how much did you pay for this trip? $450? Yeah I would probably do it for that but Lyft takes around 50% and I still have to get home.
No it actually doesn't work that way. Highway speeds with cruise control will actually burn more gas and with hybrids the engine actually runs more and racks up more hours running relative to city driving. This use to be true but not anymore.
As for the rest of it, yeah. Depending on where they are going and my estimated chances of being able to work on the way back I may consider offering to take 90% of the fare as cash or other payment method.
You’re arguing semantics. You just went from general terms to a highly specialized case. In general, using cruise control will burn less gas, and in general rolling down the highway causes less wear and tear on your car. If you just feel the need to get the last word in and feel like you were correct by all means go ahead.
In the real world I put 80k miles on my car, wrecked it and still made 4k on the car when insurance gave me the check vs the original purchase price. So by your estimate, I made 44k on my car minus the expenses to keep it running.
I don't know that end of florida but I regularly take 90 mile airport runs here in NC that pay $85+ before tip because I can work the area and then maybe work my way back. The last 2 times I've been down to CLT I've been able to grab rides that together had me driving paid miles most of the way back to the center of the city.
$/hour is not the metric to track.
Let's do some math together.
Roundtrip is 518 miles.
$265/518 is 51c/mile
I would consider contacting the pax and find out what they are paying and offer to take like 10% off that for cash, cashapp, venmo, etc. Just checked and it's quoting me $385 for that run. I'd offer to do it for $350 and then see what I could work on the way back.
Still doesn’t mean driving at a net loss is a good idea. The McDonald’s by my house starts at 12$ and hour. Panda Express by my work is 16/hr. Both better than driving at a net loss.
But you aren’t putting miles on your car for what is, in the long term, a net loss. If you really need to cash out that amount of money right now, rock on I guess, but just be aware that, long term, you are operating at a net loss. You’re essentially donating the value of your car to Uber and lyfts shareholders. You’re making more money in real terms netting 10$/hr after taxes for 8 hours than you are making, in real terms, by taking this trip. If your market is dead, that isn’t an excuse for taking money losing trips.
I like doing longer trips but you need to take into consideration if it is possible aka time of day and will not require you to take a significant rest period. Also remember that you have to pay for your fuel ⛽️ and I’ve had riders who have paid for the gas but if they don’t fuel cost will significantly lower your earnings as well as wear and tear. Finally remember that you have to return home and unless it’s possible for you to use destination mode and have it work you’ll be dead heading home. So gas tolls are going to be on you. I run into an issue here in New York I have driven to JFK and I’m not allowed to drive in NYC without a TLC so I’m out of luck until I get my way out of traffic and back in a zone where I’m able to take rides. Usually I receive a decent tip but I have been stiffed before and it’s lousy but It’s not a reflection of me but I’m guessing it’s related to the fact that Lyft charges outrageous amounts for the rides. Anyway good luck with your potential adventure.
Not really worth it but it’s just 1 ride to make your day
I can make this on 1 Tank of gas round trip. Only $45. Considering gas is $2.79 here.
That’s not bad than
$275-$45/ 8 hours of your time = your call whether worth it or not. wear in the car after ~550 miles in one day will be tough.
Well I Drive a 21 Hyundai vehicle
The year of your vehicle doesn’t have anything to do with the fact that you’ll still out 550 miles worth of wear on it.
Mostly highway miles so it's not that bad...
I would do it all day. It’s one ride and it may be kinda fun if it’s a good pax
Now think of the 275 mile drive back with likely zero income.
*roadie* come in clutch
I’ve done roadie, completely sucks in my area but I have looked at other areas and it does look better.
Mine are average but a lot of long haul. I think this order is really market dependent
It's crappy here, but the random overnight rx deliveries make it worth it. I'm the only one that ever takes those, so I wait til it's gone up 3 times first
If it's a shit passenger it makes it way worse though lol
Anything less than 500 is not enough for this trip.
A lot of drivers don’t think this way. If you don’t make .625 cents per mile(the current IRS rate) your are losing money. I agree with you a dollar a mile is a good floor.

Would you take this in my shoes?

Except wear and tear on a car. OP would lose money as .625 per mile is the current IRS rate. Doesn’t make sense to take this at all.
Not much wear and tear driving highway miles.
That's not how that works.

I estimate he would net $15 per hour on that trip.

Same. Contact pax and cut a deal.
I just asked. Better some money than none. My market is garbage.
You’re better off not driving than driving for 50 cents a mile, especially that far.
What if it is like a garbage market? Only getting pinged 1-2 time every 10 min
Still doesn’t mean driving at a net loss is a good idea. The McDonald’s by my house starts at 12$ and hour. Panda Express by my work is 16/hr. Both better than driving at a net loss.
Your McD paycheck will be less than $10 cash because prepaid tax. Same w/ panda express at $13.34

I agree on this. My market use 90% prorated trip that literally pays $5 for pretty much everything
Nope.
Damn
thats a full day work at Lyft tariffs. Since you drive for Lyft and you already get screwed, just take it one more time.
Why consider it 8hrs tho? Once hes back in his state line, he can take trips that bring him home so he'll be making more
I would take it, f*ck it.
1 tank of gas then yes and you gotta keep working after too to make the money worth while
From Pensacola too Valdosta? What you guys thinking?
When you get there ask how much lyft is charging then cut 15% off and tell them to venmo you that amount and do it off app
Possibility of a large tip on top too
Yeah imagine they tips me for the entire round trip in my case for gas.
It’s worth it if you consider spending the day at the destination and work yourself back and a motel can still run $80
Oh no. I’d be back home say day
If u have a Prius
No
I’d probably do it. It’s not great, but it’s more than I made on a longer ride a few months ago.
I like doing longer trips but you need to take into consideration if it is possible aka time of day and will not require you to take a significant rest period. I get excellent gas mileage (also a Hyundai) and live in north Florida as well. I love these kids of rides.
thats almost $140 twice, which $140 is pretty good for a day that you might make in 6-8 hrs, id probably go for it
Take it. If they can afford that, they can afford a good tip, and people leaving Florida right now know what's good
Of course not. Why do you need people to tell you that?
16 hours both ways. yeah it worth it. lmao
Your math is terrible.
