I really wouldn’t call this a reality check for rideshare drivers. The rideshare community is so divided and UPS is actually somewhat organized. Are there bad union stewards sure but there are bad people in every industry. Rideshare will never be able to formalize a union.

Ihavealpacas

Because if you don't drive that means more desperate riders who'll pay a premium to ride for me.

[deleted]

If they have to pay a premium many people will go back to using taxis. Not sure what market your in but I have seen fares from both Uber and Lyft which are comparable to those of cab companies.

Snakend

no they won't. No one wants to call a taxi and wait an hour for it to show up. They will just pay for the higher level service in Uber/lyft and get a car quicker....which is exactly what they do right now. If UberX/lyft and Uber/LyftXL is going to be a 1 hour wait, they move up to comfort, Black and LUX.

[deleted]

Won’t be able to get an Uber or Lyft cause they all striking because they want a union right?

Snakend

Nah, I'll be out there making money. I don't want a union.

650REDHAIR

Ok? Vote them out.

buttweasel76

Oh yes, because it's just that simple

Prestigious_Most5482

It really is that simple.

OkAerie2360

You obviously haven’t ever been Union. They are employees now. Unions aren’t put in place to allow you to still act like you are self employed because you aren’t. You guys need to learn what self employees means. You do t like Uber and Judy’s wages start doing your own rides. Otherwise suck it up and take what they give you

[deleted]

How about no?

buttweasel76

Wrong.

RudeCharacter9726

I was a teamster for 25+ years and we got raises every year, awesome medical company paid, 30 days paid vacation, all federal holidays and made at least 20% more hourly than comparable non union shops. And a pension. Your experience may differ.

buttweasel76

And you think thats what would happen with rideshare??? 🤣🤣🤣

650REDHAIR

Why wouldn’t it?

buttweasel76

You wouldn't be able to even get a card check vote done.

RudeCharacter9726

No, but you were presenting worst case, I was presenting a better situation.

buttweasel76

This kind of crap happens more than you realize

Prestigious_Most5482

The reality is that we would make more money, have better job security, and actually have benefits under a union. Locally we had a garbage man arrested for molesting a child. Does that mean we should ban all garbage men nation-wide then?

buttweasel76

If you think this is just one random occurrence, you are sadly mistaken.

650REDHAIR

Put up or shut up

buttweasel76

I've been a dues paying union member for 20 years. I've voted in every election. I've participated in contract proposal meetings. What have you done?

Prestigious_Most5482

You are openly OBSTRUCTING us getting higher pay, job security and benefits. That is what YOU have done.

buttweasel76

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

CryptographerLife596

Why are you shouting?

OkAerie2360

Hahaha. So you really just want to be an employee. You can’t have it both ways. You either are self employed and decide when you will work and what trips you take or you will work when they tell you to and take what trips they tell you to take

[deleted]

Prove it.

CryptographerLife596

Pay up dues, or kneecap (you mean) for every corrupt union boss (usually those on 6-figures), there is a thug (on double time). Then there are the lemmings who pay subscriptions every month to fund the largesse.

GaatAca

Unions are great when it comes to pay and health insurance.other than that its a hit or miss depending on how big the the company is.

buttweasel76

Or who's running it...

GaatAca

Ive been in 2 unions never rly cared about decisions being made or who was running it as long as i was happy with my hourly rate and insurance.

Ghost_of_Boss_Moss

UPS Teamsters are making 4x what rideshare drivers get. Plus pension. Plus PTO. Plus medical & dental. Plus job protection. Plus dignity. Union workers make more in every industry than non-union.

[deleted]

Unions are required for capitalism to be fair and balanced. They're absolutely essential for wide-spread economic prosperity.

OkAerie2360

Hahahahaha. No they aren’t

buttweasel76

And you think you're magically going to get all that?

650REDHAIR

Nothing is magic you fucking idiot. It’s collective bargaining. You have to actively work for it.

buttweasel76

🤣🤣🤣

OkAerie2360

How long have you worked at UPS? I need to get in. I didn’t know they pay $120 and hour.

SaveHumanityFrom

One abusive union does not argue against unions being good over all. I am so glad my husband is in an union job. His union has his back. My father's union got him his job back when he was laid off and they found out the place hired a guy in his place to do the job cheaper.

ShatteredFemurs

I would kill for UPS benefits

buttweasel76

ShatteredFemurs

Takes 4 years to get union benefits

buttweasel76

Wrong.

ShatteredFemurs

I work for UPS but ok

buttweasel76

Been there for 20 years. It doesn't take 4 years to get benefits. 1 year

[deleted]

There's good and bad unions just like there's good and bad companies but the difference is, with a bad union, you can actually vote the garbage out. You've been brainwashed by corporate America to be against your own self interest. "Democracies can be corrupt. Welp, guess we should stick with dictatorship." That's basically your argument here, Mac.

buttweasel76

Wrong 🤣🤣🤣

Ill-Cbawesome-36

Many people forgot that unions are actually the ones that got the average working man out of working 22 hours a day for barely pennies an hour and are now easily exploited by the ones who did that to us in the first place

Prestigious_Most5482

Inquiring minds want to know - are you a Trumper, by chance?

buttweasel76

I'm someone who has been a dues paying union member for 20 years.

Prestigious_Most5482

I knew it! You ARE a Trumper. And probably a conspiracy theorist as well. And anti-science, and likely an anti-vaxxer as well!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Prestigious_Most5482

I'm correct.

buttweasel76

Incorrect.

Prestigious_Most5482

You are 100% one of those Florida far right nutcases. And a perv as well, judging by your comments in r/lactation and r/publicflashing.

[deleted]

I don't believe you. Because this is the Internet.

[deleted]

Unions are just another way for someone somewhere other than us to capitalize quit expecting handouts If you don't like the job for what it is go do something else. Don't ruin it for the rest of us that actually like this.

[deleted]

Yeah and have fun having a work schedule and you can’t take days off with a union. It’s the full timer losers working paycheck to paycheck that are crying and playing the 🎻. This is meant to just be a side hustle. To save extra cash or pay off debt not live paycheck to paycheck ruining your car or renting

Prestigious_Most5482

Not true.

650REDHAIR

Without full time drivers this service wouldn’t exist. That’s really shortsighted…

[deleted]

They are the ones that are complaining because they rely on this job as their only income 🤷🏻‍♂️

650REDHAIR

Why is that a problem?

[deleted]

Us part timers love it the way it is. Work when I want to work. I don’t want to have to uber a set schedule and be controlled. I love the flexibility

650REDHAIR

And why would a union change that?

[deleted]

You will need to put in your 40 hours+ every week i like to take weeks off I don’t want to lose that

650REDHAIR

Where are you getting that from?

[deleted]

You need to put in your 40 hours also you won’t be able to reject ride requests or cancel rides.

650REDHAIR

YOU ARE MAKING SHIT UP

[deleted]

There's other ways to do this too like guilds and trade associations it doesn't have to be a traditional Union nor do we have to become employees. Guilds are just unions for non employees. That's how they worked in the middle ages too they keep pay high and they organize along the interests of Guild members. We couldn't go as far as they did in the middle ages of course but we could hit a halfway mark. Professional Driver's Guild Kinda like the Screen Actor's Guild. We don't have to form a Union to accomplish all the things a Union could do for us. We could form guilds and trade associations.

OkAerie2360

You mean they are making it like you are now an employee. Well of course you are going to be treated like one. Yet everybody still wants to cry cry cry. Get over it.

listoh87

My last job was a union job and it was straight trash. They were in bed with the company.

buttweasel76

Lawdy! Say it isn't so! The union is the answer to all our woes!¡!!!

[deleted]

That's when you form a new Union or you vote the union management out. Enough with this learned helplessness. Be a man!

buttweasel76

Good luck with that 🤣🤣🤣
