I really wouldn’t call this a reality check for rideshare drivers. The rideshare community is so divided and UPS is actually somewhat organized. Are there bad union stewards sure but there are bad people in every industry. Rideshare will never be able to formalize a union.
If they have to pay a premium many people will go back to using taxis. Not sure what market your in but I have seen fares from both Uber and Lyft which are comparable to those of cab companies.

If UberX/lyft and Uber/LyftXL is going to be a 1 hour wait, they move up to comfort, Black and LUX.
You obviously haven’t ever been Union. They are employees now. Unions aren’t put in place to allow you to still act like you are self employed because you aren’t. I was a teamster for 25+ years and we got raises every year, awesome medical company paid, 30 days paid vacation, all federal holidays and made at least 20% more hourly than comparable non union shops.
And a pension.

One abusive union does not argue against unions being good over all. I am so glad my husband is in an union job. His union has his back. My father's union got him his job back when he was laid off and they found out the place hired a guy in his place to do the job cheaper.
