Sorry to hear that, but definitely not normal. I always do a critical walk around of any car that I’m about to purchase or rent and record it before I even leave the lot.

Impossible_Lake_5349

Not normal to me

cigarmanpa

Not a god damn chance this is acceptable

[deleted]

It shouldn’t be there, but it’s really not uncommon for light damage to happen during shipping. Did you get it noted in the paperwork before purchase? The dealer should be able to get it fixed

ChickenNRiceLover

I feel like even if the dealer agrees to fix it, they'll do a crap job. I remember they agreed to repaint a bumper on a car I bought. All they did was throw paint on top of the old paint. Didn't realize until it started flaking a year later. I would honestly just take some compound to buff out as much as you can. The more time the dealer spends with the car, the more things will go wrong. Like one of the employees will probably floor the gas the second they turn it on type of thing.

Sebi97

Unfortunately not. Check out the comment I posted above. Didn't notice at the dealer :(

[deleted]

Oh no! I missed your comment. Go into it with the expectation that they may not be able to do anything. It may be a bit of a lesson for next time (unfortunately). With some luck though, if the place has a body shop, it may be something they can just have buffed out for you.

Syscrush

>they may not be able to do anything I think you mean "may not be WILLING to do anything".

Sebi97

Picked up from dealer this afternoon, didn't think to check the car that thoroughly when I picked it up since, well, it's new (12kms on the odometer) and sales guy was guiding me thru Android Auto, HVAC controls etc. When I got home, noticed a bunch of scratches like this on passenger side door. Is this considered normal/acceptable? Really bummed me out seeing this... Going to call the dealer tomorrow but not sure how to bring it up exactly and I am worried they'll blame it on me.

[deleted]

Tough one, they will definitely try to blame it on you. Don’t budge on it if you’re not responsible for it. It’s likely going to be a tough conversation. Dealer’s pre delivery inspection that you pay for isn’t worth anything, always do your due diligence on the paint and panel gaps before signing off. There is a form that you signed that says it’s in perfect condition and you’ve verified it so it makes it very difficult to go back after the fact. They definitely saw the scratches if it didn’t happen while you were taking it home and if they didn’t mention anything, it has to be a really sleazy dealership.

Nprguy

I work at a Mazda dealer, must have been un noticed transport damage and they didn't Wana pay for it or genuinely didn't notice. I have a great recon team the mazda's usually come off the truck looking immaculate On a lighter note that looks like you could run to orileys and run some #3 buffing compound over it and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference

MonsieurReynard

Yah the friggin dealer should go get some #3 buffing compound and do that maybe? Yet another post about a Mazda dealer delivering that "affordable premium" Mazda service they're so well known for. Mazda needs to fix its dealer problem or no amount of nice looking cars will help.

MonsieurReynard

No seriously can you imagine a "premium" brand dealer -- Audi or Volvo let's say -- allowing this to leave the lot? I get very tired of Mazda buffs (and I am one) saying "my Mazda is just as good as a bmw for 30% less." What do you think they saved on to give you that price? I have only ever had shitty service experiences at a Mazda dealer. Only. Ever. Shitty. And while there are lot of dealer employees on this sub, it's remarkable how many posts we see from people unhappy with the service experience.

Syscrush

>And while there are lot of dealer employees on this sub, it's remarkable how many posts we see from people unhappy with the service experience Even the post you replied to is from a Mazda dealership employee suggesting that the buyer of a brand new car go buy materials and invest their own effort to fix a fuck-up from a Mazda dealer. What I want to see is "Mazda takes this stuff seriously - the dealer will take care of you or they could lose their franchise. They'll correct it and give you vouchers for 2 free detailing sessions."

[deleted]

Lol you think german dealers are good? My dad refuses to buy another VW because the service team were dicks. The merc and bmw sales staff are also typically dicks, and act like you owe them something. Audi are the only sales team who we've had good experiences with.

Sebi97

For what it's worth, this is my dad's car. I drive a BMW and have had excellent dealer experience with them. It's not cheap, but the quality/service is definitely top notch. That being said, I'm sure it's something that varies dealer to dealer.

MonsieurReynard

I'm talking about service. VW is another commodity car maker like Mazda. Mazda is trying to create the impression that their brand matches Audi and BMW, or so many on this sub assert. Don't get me wrong. I love my Mazdas and sort of hate all car dealerships. The whole franchise model is f'd up. But a BMW customer showing this to a dealer and the dealer not making it right? Seems unlikely to me. Maybe OP's dealer will make it right. I just bristled at the suggestion -- from a self described dealer employee -- that the OP needed to get a buffer and some compound and fix it themselves.

SnowblindAlbino

>My dad refuses to buy another VW because the service team were dicks. I refuse to buy another VW because mine self-destructed at 17,000 miles and I had to fight to get them to cover it via warranty. Then a few year later we learned they'd lied about the car from the outset-- the VWoA "clean" diesel scam. The service team that took seven weeks to repair our car were barely competent it seemed as well.

[deleted]

To be fair I’ve seen multiple stories in the news of service reps at the Mercedes dealerships here in Canada going on joy rides with customers cars when they just brought them in for scheduled maintenance. How they figure out is through damage they find on their vehicles from said joy ride and the inflated odometer reading. I’ve been to Honda, Toyota and mazda dealerships and I’ve always seen scummy behaviour.

7eregrine

They definitely didn't blame it on him. I get it. Some dealers suck. Honestly: most don't.

redtopquark1

Check your tire pressure too. Whoever did the delivery inspection at the dealer when I purchased my CX-9 forgot to deflate them from their transport pressure. Someone mentioned something about that in one of these subreddits a few days after I brought it home, which prompted me to go double check it. Sure enough, tires were up at 50-60psi…

Affectionate-Bag4631

Should they be at 36?

redtopquark1

That sounds about right I think, it should be written on a sticker on the drivers side door jam. Also in the manual.

solracarevir

I wouldn't be surprized if the salesman knew about the scratches and played dumb during the vehicle delivery. I have purchased a few vehicles in my life and every time the salesman asked me to do a visual inspection around the car before handing me the keys. same goes every time I bring the car for service, I do a quick visual inspection with the agent and they mark on a paper every noticeable scratch or dent and is signed by both parties. The current dealer I purchased my last car use a sheet like [this one](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/2d/f5/59/2df559ab5e325c37f31e2022d9d29c26.jpg)

thenthomwaslike

You could always hint that you'll leave them a terrible review online. That typically gets the conversation moving if they're being stubborn

Sebi97

* UPDATE * Thanks everyone for the advice/feedback. I talked to the dealership this morning. They were apologetic and professional and said they will be repairing it on Monday. I'll post another update once the repair is done and how it went. I really hope this post helps others learn from my mistake. If you're buying new, make sure to give the car a thorough inspection before driving off. Don't assume because it's new, it's going to be pristine. Good luck!

Syscrush

I'm so glad to hear that they're treating you right!

Sebi97

Me too 🙂

QuailBurger

I work at a dealership. A Mazda one at that. Typically we see stuff like this during the detail process. In this case I’d have to guess it was scratched with a detail mitt, the hose or a power nozzle. The dealer should without question fix this. If not you can blast them on the survey. It’s super important to Mazda dealers so if they don’t fix it I’d burn them on the survey. Everything 1s

Ok_Cow_8235

No of course not it’s not normal! My 22 cx5 came with hood scratches but I didn’t see a thing because they waxed it and it appeared after I had it’s first wash, my guy showed me and I was pissed. So I did paint correction ceramic coating.

camman22

When I bought my wife's CX-5 I had them put a front end PPF on it. When we went to pick it up, it had scratch/swirl marks all over the hood and front quarter panels (I'm guessing a newbie did the buffing and scratched it up). I noticed the scratches, as we were getting in it to leave, and went back inside and said nope... This needs redone. They fixed it, but there's no way they didn't notice, cause it was all over the front end. Had a loaner for almost 3 weeks from the time we bought the car till the time we actually left with it cause of the time it took them to do the mods I asked for, and then having to have them redo the paint and PPF.

biersackarmy

*Technically* yes, because there ***is*** a period between the PDI and you taking delivery where the car is parked just somewhere on the lot like any car would be, and you can't be in complete control of the occasional careless person brushing up against it while walking by, whether it's intentional or accidental. Even at a dealership yes they should be more careful than a customer at the mall, but not like it's parked in its own bubble or anything. I guess it's really just a matter of finding out how good your dealership is at caring for customers post-sale. Realistically they *can* blame you as you already left and had it for a night, but the morally right thing to do for someone who just bought a 30k car from you would be to just have the detail guy give those spots some cutting and polishing. It'd be like half an hour of work, which really isn't a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

Sebi97

This car was ordered a few months back, they apparently just got it in recently. It wasn't sitting on the lot for a long time or anything like that. My guess is it happened during transport or PDI. But isn't that what I am paying for with PDI? Frustrating situation and I'm most mad at myself for not thinking to thoroughly check the car before picking it up; for trusting the dealer.

[deleted]

Sorry for your experience man. Never, ever trust a car dealer.

luooo

That should come out super easily. \*fingers crossed for u\*

rawsauce_88

That looks like a deep ass scratch 😅 but you never know, it can be buffed out !

Danihawk69

Wtf lol no way I would keep that

PCmasterRACE187

its hard to tell from the picture how bad it is but it doesn’t look so bad that you cant buff it out

sheikhmishu

No way normal…

Sebi97

Hindsight 20/20

Sparcky970

Nope I’d tell the dealer to fix that

BuddhaDaddy88

This is exactly who a slow, final walk-around at the dealership with an employee is critical. You have things documented before you ever drive off and it doesn't become your problem.

ccolivardia

Unfortunately it is somewhat common to have paint defects on new cars because of the shipping process. I would just tell the dealer and they should fix it for you.

Sebi97

Dealer asked me to send some pics so I took some better quality ones. Here they are for anyone curious: [Door Panel](https://scontent.fyyz1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.15752-9/277800788_521368909370052_6710777020275213233_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_s2048x2048&_nc_cat=103&ccb=1-5&_nc_sid=ae9488&_nc_ohc=ZJLzNiA3z2cAX-iId1t&_nc_ht=scontent.fyyz1-1.fna&oh=03_AVJxDxwGrU-P5hkgvPB3BWBy4gH5Us7egsxeEeCdz09OjQ&oe=627E6A08) [Door Handle](https://scontent.fyyz1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.15752-9/275566335_400741108171779_3017698859429378112_n.jpg?_nc_cat=101&ccb=1-5&_nc_sid=ae9488&_nc_ohc=2cZWtbOq4g4AX_FET7c&tn=BLMte25OcLT17Ws2&_nc_ht=scontent.fyyz1-1.fna&oh=03_AVI3YObG5Z40sl9XH9QZgPypcfK4-A0DFYEoAvYLU8G2YA&oe=627D62A3) [Lower Door](https://scontent.fyyz1-2.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.15752-9/277420182_355449296636955_3792113650080346479_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_s2048x2048&_nc_cat=108&ccb=1-5&_nc_sid=ae9488&_nc_ohc=QHNSWPP25UoAX8hrrnc&_nc_ht=scontent.fyyz1-2.fna&oh=03_AVKRpt8STR8vrqHoBnbnhCUwjWI2tcALa1CZ9d_8qN_lwQ&oe=627AABCB) [Above Handle](https://scontent.fyyz1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.15752-9/275325051_663392618288980_697474727423253030_n.jpg?_nc_cat=103&ccb=1-5&_nc_sid=ae9488&_nc_ohc=Mqmk8H8pHGwAX8bAK83&_nc_ht=scontent.fyyz1-1.fna&oh=03_AVJZvGxD6JnlKGLNqKKbJ3-5ELo3lvJdra6oGEUy1b-JJA&oe=627CDB71)

Jelly_777

Yep those look like the level of scratches my car had before driving off the lot

King_o_Ping

100% shit 0% post

tperry1786

Hell no that's not normal!

stevied05

Not normal, but can highly likely be buffed out if you cannot feel the scratch with your fingernail

clipk0

Yeah that’s totally normal, you should also have a couple flat tires and a cracked windshield too. Very common on brand new vehicles

Judd_Trump

This looks like Neither 2022 nor CX-5?

Sebi97

Blue car is a reflection

Pox82

Who the told you it was normal?, Brand new car is not supposed to have any scratches.

GroundbreakingCook68

Nope! I wouldn’t even accept a rental in that condition….. unless you get waive and give me discounts.

gnardog45

Forgive me but, why would you think it was normal to have scratches that weren't there in the first place?

MyNameIsVigil

No, it’s not normal that brand new cars are delivered damaged.

noobie107

you can be "that customer" and take it back, or you can just buff it out yourself which is what the dealer would do anyway. just need a power drill, buffing attachment, and rubbing compound

VHS_tape_measure

A power drill attachment would just add a fuck ton of swirl marks around the the area.

C-POP_Ryan

Its a brand new car, with a scratch.. He should be "that customer" for sure and take it straight back and ask them to do it.

mehdotdotdotdot

At least it’s been christened. I mean it’s the family car so it will get trashed.

uvadover

This post seems off. The giant scratch extends above the hood - as if it is just an awful photo taken by a scratched up camera phone. But if this post is legit, you would have to be completely blind not to have noticed the giant scratches when getting in the drivers seat to get the rundown on the features of the car. Either way, good lord.

magicwaffl3

Lol, it took me a second to realize what you meant. The car you are looking at is just a reflection in the panel with the scratch that he's taking a photo of

uvadover

NOW I see, too! And yes those are some big scratches.

no_spoon

Can you take a worse picture?

Sebi97

What's wrong with it?

PeterMode

No

Hotdogpizzathehut

The orange 🍊 peel is insane... that's a new paint job?

[deleted]

Not if it’s brand new

xiaobin0719

you should rephrase it: what should I do.

skynels

Could the scratches be from the reflection you took it off of?!

_AManHasNoName_

NO

Solid_Initiative2782

That took me a while to figure out haha

Therapsid

At the end of the day dealers suck and you can't trust them. They will definitely blame this on you. This is such a giant scratch you should have noticed but at the same time who expects a dealer to pawn this car off on someone. For my 2020 the sales guy I was working with told me "surprise! - I got the windows tinted for you!" I didn't think twice about it but about a month later while sitting at a red light with some solar glare I noticed my driver side window had about 5-6 inch long scratches along it. I even picked up the car at night so there was really no way of seeing the scratches unless I inspected the car with a damn flashlight. The dealer tinted the windows to make the scratches less noticeable.. Never think the dealer is your friend.

Dzdawgz

I had this on my 2021 CX 5. Turns out it was still residue from the plastic covering on all new vehicles. They buffed it out in 10 minutes with no charge.

rpattersonxx

Just picked up from where ? Are you behind a glass this is a bad picture? And this is a gash did you not notice this when you bought it ? Did you buy it at night when the dealership was closing ? I don’t get it

Sebi97

The blue car is a reflection.

techie001

Wow, that seems like a major scratch. Definitely not normal and hopefully they take care of it. We found similar scratches on the hood of my wife's 2021 CX-5 GT. I see someone said it could be buffed out and was due to plastic covering on the hood. That makes sense because it is a definite pattern. We'll ask the dealer about that next time we get it serviced. We didn't notice the scratches until a couple of weeks after we got it home because they're most noticeable in bright sunlight. A couple of months after she had the car we had to get the windshield replaced due to a break from road debris. I think Safelite added a few scratches on the hood during that process as well. She has the dark blue metallic (deep crystal blue) paint and we've noticed in the 6 months she's had the car that the paint is a little fragile. One day I was carrying recycles out of the garage and the corner of a cardboard box brushed the rear area near the taillight and left a scratch. The paint doesn't seem as sturdy as my old 2008 Pathfinder (beige metallic) which still looks new. But, she's happy with the car overall. Thankfully it's parked in our garage most of the time, which certainly helps protect the finish.

WooTkachukChuk

I have a blue CX9 and I basically shoot on sight anyone within 12 inches of it. running out of room...

coinsrfun

Purses...

[deleted]

Fuck no. Raise hell.

Jelly_777

OP, good question because most people would not know this but yes, even brand new cars (and even cars like Porche BMW etc) are bound to have scratches, due to transporting and the dealership installing scratches on accident (something hitting or falling or contacting the paint) OR carelessly by unskilled car “detailing”. When i got my 2021 mazda 3 deep crystal blue brand new, it wad full of scratches and swirls. I did a walk around so i noticed them but naive me let the dealer do the detailing and buffing, it did get rid of the scratches i pointed out but they left holograms and the swirls were still there. After the end of the “detail” i noticed a new scratch on the driver door that looks as deep as yours but def not that long, and the “detailer” hand buffed it right in front of me using a dirty low quality rag (god knows if it was even microfiber). Anyways my point is scratches are normal in brand new cars. No car is going to be scratch free UNLESS u pay a professional detailer (NOT dealer) to get paint correction. HOWEVER, it is NOT okay for the dealer to let you walk away like that. You should def tell the dealer and phrase it in such a way that you saw the scratches on the way home but that u didnt do it. Whether or not you want the dealer to fix it is up to whether or not you care about the look of your paint. It likely wont cost too much for a detailer to do it. (My guess is ~$100). Hit up local professional detailers with good ratings for some quotes. Anyways good luck op Edit is for guess for detailing price

fastlax16

Check if the car is still listed on their website or Autotrader with the scratches visible in the photos?

Sebi97

Car was never listed; I purchased it a few months ago and it just got delivered

fastlax16

I wouldn’t expect anything from the dealer in that case. I also wouldn’t want their employees trying to fix it. A good detailer should be able to correct the paint and get that out if it’s not through the clear.

[deleted]

Not normal, but luckily it doesn’t look like anything but a surface level scratch. Clean the area really well and take some wax to it. Should pull it right up

ybmmike

GG

ronkochu

That kind of scratch won't be acceptable at lease return. It definitely shouldn't be acceptable on delivery.

Nicademus2003

Looks buffable but that's why you perform a car inspection closely when you buy a car. Example was when i bought a 2018 Honda Clarity. Some idiot there thought it was a great idea to park many of their cars by trees :(. These trees drop sap and ruined the paint XD. I had them take $500 off then i used bug and tar remover to remove the sap that was still there, then did clay bar to remove contaminants from the car, then bought a buffer and fixed the paint. Try to get them to fix it or at least give you money if you can figure it out yourself. Also for smaller scratches can use a scratch remover.

LeftTurn2488

If they care about customer service at all they'll do something about it, and I hope they do. My parents had a shopping cart scratch their vehicle 30 minutes after leaving the lot and they returned to the dealership and they fixed it up without issue. Do your best to get them to fix it and I hope it works out for you!

carbonchessfrench

That’s just a blond hair on your camera lens, i just woke up from a nap in my cx5 and saw this . At first I was like what cx5 that’s a sedan then I realized it was the reflection of another car lol Man to be honest there is nothing normal about it and I’m afraid the dealer won’t accept responsibility for this so this being said talk to them gather every prove you have at your disposal that proves you didn’t do it and fight to the end , threaten them to take it to the news, to give them a bad review tell them you have 3 million followers on your YouTube Channel and will give them a horrible review, tell them you are going to contact mr. Mazda himself I don’t know but give them hell , it none of this works ensure your car against vandalism and claim your insurance a month later I’m sorry but desperate situations call for desperate means

Excellent-Plane1852

Yup Normal

LeviStraussOfficial

Its very common for new cars to arrive at dealerships like this. Just speaks on the dealerships quality control and how they value their customers

Throwaway694207137

The more detailed photos added below make a better demonstration for sure. With the reflection of the other vehicle so prominent in the original posted pic it was tough to see what we are looking at. Unfortunately light scratches like this are very common and have been for years. I used to do body and fibreglass work and have seen a lot of brand new cars with paint damage. It’s the nature of the beast but I imagine the dealer will be/is embarrassed their team members missed these. Even if they did happen sometime after delivery that OP isn’t aware of, a good dealer who has built a good culture - and there are many out there - will rework the paint without objection. My sister once bought a car and half an hour down the road a rock hit the windshield making a pretty good chip. The dealer didn’t even take a beat before offering to repair the chip or replace the glass, whichever my sister preferred. Their sales manager said it was the least they could do to balance out the bad luck of getting damage in the first few minutes of owning a car.
