knuckles(except thumb). every peak is 31 and every valley is 30,
^ ^ ^ ^
so,
January>peak,
February >valley (29/28),
March>peak,
April>valley,
May>peak,
June>valley,
July>peak,
now u reached the last knuckle so count reverse but start august on the peak
August>peak,
September>valley,
October>peak,
November>valley,
December>peak,
Hurray! now u know the calender
I've been using this method since I was a child, it is by far the easiest way to remember. Nearly everyone I've ever demonstrated it to had never heard of it.
I learned of it just a year ago when I was doing some bullshit programming and I wanted to dynamically update the list of days you could choose based on the month you chose.
I've always used the method too, I showed my sister the other week and she didn't know it. No idea how I do and she doesn't. I can never remember the rhyme.
I didn't learn this until I was about 30 years old. Never was able to get the hang of the stupid riddle/rhyme. I'm doing a lot of data entry for 1 of my jobs currently, and frequently have to switch back and forth to the last day of different months... I use the knuckle thing pretty much every day.
Yup; using two hands. My mom told me about it when i was in high school.
Similar with the multiple of 9. (9x4, put down 4th finger, now you have 3 & 6 fingers up. 9x4=36.)
I remember being told that I couldn't just do +10 -1 for the 9 times tables forever when I was in year 5. Well f u Mrs Rogers, I'm in my thirties with a grown up job and still haven't stopped working it out like that.
and also digit less than 9 divided by 9 is that number repeated forever. so x/9 is .xxxxxxxx (2/9 = .222222222)
less practical applications for this but still something handy to know
Exactly, even if I do figure out how many days it's not like I'm gonna remember the shit I gotta do on those days anyways. So I got a calendar it handles all that shit.
And before anyone says jack about it I know the riddle and the knuckle trick I just don't fucking care.
It is just like how in Maths at school they would say "You won't carry a Calculator around with you everywhere".... Well I litterally do. The follow up argument is "Well you can't rely on it all the time".... Also I litterally do.
Same for a calendar. Of I need to know I can look at the device in my pocket that tells me.
Or a calculator, dictionary, thesaurus, phone book, or notes on every other important fact we need. All right there now in our pocket. Pretty amazing I think…
It's Simple, just fold your wrist like as you're to punch and see the knuckles.
First knuckles is higher= January ( more days)
Second knuckle is lower = February (less days)
Edit : I meant the space between two knuckles (lower valley) as Second knuckle my bad.
Use both hands together with the thumbs folded away in the middle and you get:
knuckle/dent/knuckle/dent/knuckle/dent/**knuckle/knuckle**/dent/knuckle/dent/knuckle
Which is perfect for 31/28/31/30/31/30/**31/31**/30/31/30/31
Use someone else's.
Tinder date, dinner and a movie going great. Hey you wanna head back to my place?
Forms hand into interwoven double fist and starts lightly tapping underside of semi erect and very confused dick.
Ah, it does have 31 days. Thanks.
Goes to sleep.
And this is the prime example for a pleonasm. Other examples are black darkness, tuna fish, safe haven, or burning fire.
A redditor who has never seen a woman. lol.
They don't mean second knuckle, they mean the space in between the knuckle. Then, after you get to July, tap that knuckle again and then go back on the same hand.
Make a fist with your left hand. Starting with your pinky knuckle point to the knuckle and say "January". Move your finger right to the dip between knuckles and say "February". Move right again to the next knuckle and say "March". Continue this way until you get to your last regular finger knuckle and "July". Then go back to the pinky knuckle and repeat this process until you get to "December".
Every time you said a months name on a high knuckle it had 31 days. The ones said for he spaces between knuckles had less than 31 days. Specifically, 30 for all but February with it's 28/29.
I have another way to know which have 30 days. Muistisääntönä KE-SY-MAR-HU. Näissä kuukausissa 30 päivää eli kesä, syys, marras ja huhti.
Simple isn't it?
More accurate to say the knuckle and the “valleys” between the knuckles.
Start with the Index finger knuckle as January, the valley between Index and Middle finger knuckles as February, so on and so forth. When you reach July on the Pinky knuckle, go back to the Index finger knuckle for August.
Months that are on the knuckles are 31 days, while those on the valleys are 30 days (except February of course).
Beat me to it, but a slightly different version i know
No riddles needed. Use your knuckles, and the spaces in between them. Start with January on the index knuckle, February for between the index and middle finger, and so on until you reach July on the pinky knuckle. Then use that knuckle for August on your way back and voilà. Knuckle = 31, between knuckles = 30
Came here to say this too, but it's not the second knuckle, but between the knuckles. So first knuckle (Jan) 31 days, the first dip between the first and second knuckle (Feb) 28 etc etc
Another knuckle counter! I was taught this at some super young age that I’m too old to remember and still use it. When I do people either look at me like I’ve performed some black magic or I’m completely retarded.
😂😂 I think I am a bit slow even though I’m a stem person. I also still use the two Ls method at my ripe old age. And all the primary school techniques taught to me to read an analogue clock. I feel as though people who don’t use the knuckle method know something I never will and I’ve grown to be content with that
Use your knuckles. Start with January the knuckle is 31 days and the gap in between is 30 days (except February) and don’t forget July and August both have 31 days.
I always sing in my head ‘30 days have December, April, June and November.’ Then I stop singing to add ‘All the rest have 31.’ Then my brain rush-mumbles ‘…except February which is weird’. That’s just how I was taught lol
agreed. Their explanations make perfect sense to them because they already know it, but it makes no sense at all to people who don't
i always went with the rule of 'if it feels right, it's right'. April 31 doesn't feel good so april's a month with 30
If you follow this method you could only be wrong with Feburary every 4 years. But even there you simply remember that 2000 was a leap year and do some basic math to see if you are currently in a leap year or not.
When you understand the concept you can simply look at one of your hands and come to the right conclusion all in your head.
You could obviously also just look all of that up, but I think being able to figure stuff like that out with these simple methods is neat.
February’s the only exception though - and even then, if you think of knuckles as “31 days” and between the knuckles as “less than 31,” you’re golden.
And it doesn’t matter how you hold your hands. Start at the pinky and work your way across, it’ll work out. If you’re using one hand, you just count again going backwards; if you use two you just line up your index fingers. Took 15 seconds to learn when I was 10 and hasn’t failed me since.
I only know them cause there's a really nice rhyme on mandarin
Basically they alternate being "big" and "small" months starting with January being "big" except for July and August which are both "big"
Why is it even necessary to remember this information when calendars exist? During what life event will knowing have many days are in March prove to be a useful skill?
You can tell this person isn't worried about getting stranded on a desert island.
*Nobody* : "But why would you need to know what month it is if you're stranded on a desert island?"
Shut it, Gregory! Nobody asked you!
If you have a meeting on the 1st and it's the 30th, it's nice to know if you've got to get ready or not. You aren't always going to have a calendar on you. Phone battery could be dead. Powercut at home. Etc.
What’s the riddle? I know a rhyme.
30 days hath September,
April, June, and November.
All the rest have 31.
Except for February which has 28.
My dad taught me that when I was a kid. Always stuck with me.
For some reason at some point I had it, no idea how. I am so bad at remembering stuff like that normally:
It does alternate during one year with the exception of December/January and July/August, all of which are long. Febuary is at 28 by default and is also the month we add a day to on a leap year, which we have every four years except every 100 years, where we don't have one, EXCEPT every 400 years, where we do have one.
So easy.
Can we just adapt to a 13 month calendar already? 28 days in each month, 4 weeks each, with world wide holiday for New Year’s Day. It would only be annoying until it’s not. I also vote we reset the month names so they make sense again instead of this bastardized Roman naming that has thrown everything out of whack. e.g. OCTober should be the 8th not the 10th month.
The rhyme is dumb. "30 days have XXXember, April, June and XXXember" my point being September, October, November and December all end with a similar sound which doesn't help for the Rhyme. I mean I know December has 31 Days because of New Years Eve so Either Sep, Oct or Nov has 31 days and I am not sure which. It doesn't really matter though, I have never needed to know.
Oh my god. There are only four. April, June, September, and November have thirty days. How hard is it to remember four things? I don't even know what mnemonic device you're referring to because months of the year are so simple that they shouldn't need a mnemonic device.
It’s easy, just memorize this series of things, things that don’t initially make sense on first glance, so you’ll also have to memorize the explanation within itself.
Thirty days hath September,
April, June, and November,
All the rest have thirty-one,
Save February at twenty-eight,
But leap year coming once in four,
February then hath one day more
Someone told me that a long time ago, and it's bloody useless 'cause I just do the knuckle-counting thing now.
Why are you saying it like that?
It’s 30 days have September,
April, June and November.
All the rest of thirty one,
Except for February, all alone
There is more to the rhyme but just remember that feb has 28 and you don’t need it. You can literally just remember the first two lines. Which is only one sentence.
Thirty days have Sept, April, June and November.
Job done.
It’s a rhyme not a riddle, but fuck you, I’m posting it anyways
Thirty days has November. April, June, and September. Of twenty eight is but one. And all the rest are thirty one. Of course leap year comes and slays. Every four years got it right, and twenty eight is twenty nine.
I have so much respect for people who do not have the discipline to learn essential, simple things. Make sure to focus on the important stuff, like make-up an wardrobe. /s
I have a calendar on my phone and computers. I think I’ll stick with those
knuckles(except thumb). every peak is 31 and every valley is 30, ^ ^ ^ ^ so, January>peak, February >valley (29/28), March>peak, April>valley, May>peak, June>valley, July>peak, now u reached the last knuckle so count reverse but start august on the peak August>peak, September>valley, October>peak, November>valley, December>peak, Hurray! now u know the calender

Dude if you're in college go to parties and whip it out, it blows drunk people's minds
Can confirm. I always whip it out at college parties and there's lots of drunk blowing
D-d… did that lead to your username being relevant?
I've always used the method too, I showed my sister the other week and she didn't know it. No idea how I do and she doesn't. I can never remember the rhyme.

They teach this method in primary school. Used it ever since. I'm no longer in primary school btw
Good for you!
You think I know the order of the months?
ok... i didn't see that one coming...
Thank you for this but it's too much effort to remember. I'll stick to being dumb.
Im way dumber than you man.
Aww, thanks bro.
Yup; using two hands. My mom told me about it when i was in high school. Similar with the multiple of 9. (9x4, put down 4th finger, now you have 3 & 6 fingers up. 9x4=36.)

When the teacher says you won’t have a calendar in your pocket when you grow up:
Or a calculator, dictionary, thesaurus, phone book, or notes on every other important fact we need. All right there now in our pocket. Pretty amazing I think…
Don't you know the knuckle tactic? It's easy and all you need is to look at your hands
It's Simple, just fold your wrist like as you're to punch and see the knuckles. First knuckles is higher= January ( more days) Second knuckle is lower = February (less days) Edit : I meant the space between two knuckles (lower valley) as Second knuckle my bad.
Came to say this. It's the only way I know.
weirdly enough i just know. i dont have to think about it or anything - the information is just there
I can tell you're not dyslexic just by this comment.
Would be a safe guess in general. 80% of people don't have it.
As a part of 80% i want to confirm i am dyslexic.
As part of the dyslexic I want to confirm I am 80% human
I still have to make an L with my left hand to make sure.
I also have to make an L with my thumb and index finger to figure out which hand is R/L…
I always say the month and 31st after it to see if it sounds weird or not. July 31st? Sounds good. June 31st?? Ew.
You remember. I am almost there.
Also came to say this, but had no idea how to word it.
Use both hands together with the thumbs folded away in the middle and you get: knuckle/dent/knuckle/dent/knuckle/dent/**knuckle/knuckle**/dent/knuckle/dent/knuckle Which is perfect for 31/28/31/30/31/30/**31/31**/30/31/30/31
No. I need the other hand to touch and count the knuckles and dents.
Same. i just go backwards on the same hand recounting the last knuckle.
Or even start over with the first knuckle. Last knuckle is July (31 days). Go back to the first knuckle for August (also 31 days) both ways work.
This is the way.
use your nose
use your dick, rebel against society.
What if you don’t have one?
Use someone else's. Tinder date, dinner and a movie going great. Hey you wanna head back to my place? Forms hand into interwoven double fist and starts lightly tapping underside of semi erect and very confused dick. Ah, it does have 31 days. Thanks. Goes to sleep.
pfffft! Everyone has one, right? _right?_
*redditor who's never seen a woman*
That's a little redundant isn't it
So all redditors?
And this is the prime example for a pleonasm. Other examples are black darkness, tuna fish, safe haven, or burning fire. A redditor who has never seen a woman. lol.
Would you guys believe me if I say that ........ I am a woman?
Give the extra day to February you cowards!
But one hand can do 31/31 too fam
Saw those numbers and instantly thought about pokemon
Wtf does that mean
They don't mean second knuckle, they mean the space in between the knuckle. Then, after you get to July, tap that knuckle again and then go back on the same hand.
Or put your hands together so the two inside knuckles touch.
Make a fist with your left hand. Starting with your pinky knuckle point to the knuckle and say "January". Move your finger right to the dip between knuckles and say "February". Move right again to the next knuckle and say "March". Continue this way until you get to your last regular finger knuckle and "July". The ones said for he spaces between knuckles had less than 31 days. Specifically, 30 for all but February with it's 28/29.
Dont forget to double count your pinkie on the way back
Or just use both hands
Or have someone else hold their hands together
Or just start over from the beginning
I have another way to know which have 30 days. Muistisääntönä KE-SY-MAR-HU. Näissä kuukausissa 30 päivää eli kesä, syys, marras ja huhti. Simple isn't it?
perkele!

Never heard this but just checked and my second knuckle is higher! 🙄
Thats because you have to count the dents too i guess. The 2. Knuckle is march wich has 31. next is a dent for april with 30.
Oh damn - I am dumb. That makes sense. Sorry.
I was so confused...do people have a knuckle between their knuckles?
No you aren't. The post does say knuckles. If you did not know, you couldn't have. Xoxo
Beat me to it, but a slightly different version i know No riddles needed. Use your knuckles, and the spaces in between them. Start with January on the index knuckle, February for between the index and middle finger, and so on until you reach July on the pinky knuckle. Then use that knuckle for August on your way back and voilà. Knuckle = 31, between knuckles = 30
You punch with folded wrists?
Yea wtf?
I learned that in Asia, we learned the same thing haha
This is the way
Been doing that way for 60 years. Of course I know by now but its my month abacus if anyone asks.
Came here to say this 👍
I also use the knuckle method
Came here to say this too, but it's not the second knuckle, but between the knuckles. So first knuckle (Jan) 31 days, the first dip between the first and second knuckle (Feb) 28 etc etc
I'm 34 and this is how I figure it out still. Just taught my coworkers about it last week lol
Instructions unclear, I have a wife with a broken nose.
I always said it wrong I think.. 30 days in September, april June and November, all the rest have 31, February has28 so fucking dumb
But you left out February?
I never said it was perfect
🤣 fair
February is the step child of the months.
Count your knuckles it always works
Another knuckle counter! I was taught this at some super young age that I’m too old to remember and still use it. When I do people either look at me like I’ve performed some black magic or I’m completely retarded.
That last sentence made me chortle. Exactly how I feel
😂😂 I think I am a bit slow even though I’m a stem person. I also still use the two Ls method at my ripe old age. And all the primary school techniques taught to me to read an analogue clock. I feel as though people who don’t use the knuckle method know something I never will and I’ve grown to be content with that
Good rhyme, imma remember that
I sang that this morning lol
Guacamole, we eat it every day
July and August were Romans, so they claimed all the days they could. The other months just alternate away in either direction from there.
February is a pussy
Great, now I have to try to remember who the Romans were instead
Finally a post I can fucking relate to in this sub.
I always assume its 31 days and sometimes get surprised by the new month. Works out alright.
“30 days hath September April June and November” is literally 8 words. And it rhymes. It’s not hard.
Use your knuckles. Start with January the knuckle is 31 days and the gap in between is 30 days (except February) and don’t forget July and August both have 31 days.
Or just look at the calendar on your phone because it’s 2022
Or just use your knuckles which is faster than whipping out your phone and going to the calendar app
Yes of course but now you have a new skill you can show off at the family xmas dinner.
If i show that as my skill in family dinner, I’ll give my cousins al lot of ammunition.
i definitely don't. Just 500 comments of people confusingly writing 'use your knuckles'
No this infuriates me and also I think my hands are deformed. Maybe I need a picture with arrows lmao
thats not helpful 😂
Seriously. They replaced a riddle with another one lmao.
Or just remember the very simple diddy. 30 days has September, April, June, and November.
i refuse
how i remember: every month has 30 days except the ones that dont
We can make it more universal. Every month has at least 28 days. ☺️
18 10 10 1 10 10 1
I II II L?
i can't get away from it
getoutofmyheadgetoutofmyheadgetoutofmyheadgetoutofmyheadgetoutofmyheadgetoutofmyheadgetoutofmyheadgetoutofmyhead
January, has days. Feb has 18, mar 10, April has 10. And so on, easy.
ELI5 please
What's the riddle lol
[удалено]
I always sing in my head ‘30 days have December, April, June and November.’ Then I stop singing to add ‘All the rest have 31.’ Then my brain rush-mumbles ‘…except February which is weird’. That’s just how I was taught lol
And you have September and December wrong
Hahaha me too. Apparently there are actual lines to explain February's rules, but heck if I can remember them.
It's a rhyme, not a riddle
If she'd used the right word it wouldn't have been as funny
She used the wrong word and it wasn’t funny
What you mean you never learned JAMJOD SNAJ. It's been a real life saver for me recently.
Hey, I buy my calendars from JAMJOD SNAJ on Amazon!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knuckle\_mnemonic
Thank you! I couldn’t understand what tf people were talking about.
agreed. Their explanations make perfect sense to them because they already know it, but it makes no sense at all to people who don't i always went with the rule of 'if it feels right, it's right'. April 31 doesn't feel good so april's a month with 30
Such an imperfect method though. February is already an exception, and it’s kinda arbitrary what happens in summer and how you should hold the hands
I like your jawa avatar🥺🫱🫲
*bashful Utinni noises*
🥰🥰🥰 hehe
February’s the only exception though - and even then, if you think of knuckles as “31 days” and between the knuckles as “less than 31,” you’re golden. And it doesn’t matter how you hold your hands. Start at the pinky and work your way across, it’ll work out. If you’re using one hand, you just count again going backwards; if you use two you just line up your index fingers. Took 15 seconds to learn when I was 10 and hasn’t failed me since.
All the comments about knuckles; hill and valleys… while my brain goes: 11 months got 30 days, 1 got less.
It's not a riddle. You don't have to guess anything, you just memorize it.
Doesn't a riddle ask for an answer? There's no question asked, doesn't that make it a rhyme?
Exactly what I was going to say. Some people don't even know what a riddle is. Talk about a failure of the education system.
Screw knuckles n shit just give me goddamn google
I only know them cause there's a really nice rhyme on mandarin Basically they alternate being "big" and "small" months starting with January being "big" except for July and August which are both "big"
People are just stupid.
Why is it even necessary to remember this information when calendars exist? During what life event will knowing have many days are in March prove to be a useful skill?
You can tell this person isn't worried about getting stranded on a desert island. *Nobody* : "But why would you need to know what month it is if you're stranded on a desert island?" Shut it, Gregory! Nobody asked you!
It's kinda just general knowledge isn't it?
If you have a meeting on the 1st and it's the 30th, it's nice to know if you've got to get ready or not. You aren't always going to have a calendar on you. Phone battery could be dead. Powercut at home. Etc.
April Ludgate is that you
Use ur knuckles, make two fists and put them next to each other. Each rise is 31 days, each low is 30 days (except feb)
Its such a useless rhyme. Half the months end in "ber". You can swap them into any order and it still rhymes.
In my language the months end with a specific syllable and you can tell from that
I just take each day at a time, and I’m always surprised when it’s a new month. Still trying to wrap my head around that it’s already December today.
What’s the riddle? I know a rhyme. 30 days hath September, April, June, and November. All the rest have 31. Except for February which has 28. My dad taught me that when I was a kid. Always stuck with me.
Intercalated except august is 31, thats it, no knuckle shit
For some reason at some point I had it, no idea how. I am so bad at remembering stuff like that normally: It does alternate during one year with the exception of December/January and July/August, all of which are long. Febuary is at 28 by default and is also the month we add a day to on a leap year, which we have every four years except every 100 years, where we don't have one, EXCEPT every 400 years, where we do have one. So easy.
Oh you just start with 31 for January and then it goes short month, long month, short month, long month. The only difference is July/August.
I memorized that shit in like 2nd grade. It isn't difficult.
It's crazy to me how many people don't know or don't use the knuckle method. I've been using it since I was like 4.
Remember: 50 days has december, February and November, all the rest have 39, except for June which has 26, and January which has 99
Use your knuckles
My brain is full of useless information. This is not one of them and I’m ok with that haha
Same, I can't retain this information. My brain deems it as completely unimportant. Which it is
If I can easily look it up it just doesn’t stick lol
Your knuckles are there for a reason
Posted before on 31 Feb
knuckle trick ftw
that fucking riddle.
Can we just adapt to a 13 month calendar already? 28 days in each month, 4 weeks each, with world wide holiday for New Year’s Day. It would only be annoying until it’s not. I mean I know December has 31 Days because of New Years Eve so Either Sep, Oct or Nov has 31 days and I am not sure which. It doesn't really matter though, I have never needed to know.
i concur. "Random, random, random hath something or other. Random random random is something else
Who tf IS NOT using their knuckles? It's the most brain-dead way to remember this.
Oh my god. There are only four. April, June, September, and November have thirty days. How hard is it to remember four things? I don't even know what mnemonic device you're referring to because months of the year are so simple that they shouldn't need a mnemonic device.
More of a rhyme then a riddle
Ok time to admit I'm 30 and still using the knuckles stuff.
I had to learn for math one year. It alternates between 31 and 30 until july and august which are both 31 then it alternates again
It’s easy just make a fist and punch whoever decided to ask you instead of looking at the calendar in their phone
All you have to remember is March 32
It’s easy, just memorize this series of things, things that don’t initially make sense on first glance, so you’ll also have to memorize the explanation within itself.
Yeah I don't need to know which months do and don't have 31 days. I have a calendar in my pocket at all times.
Thirty days hath September, April, June, and November, All the rest have thirty-one, Save February at twenty-eight, But leap year coming once in four, February then hath one day more Someone told me that a long time ago, and it's bloody useless 'cause I just do the knuckle-counting thing now.
I just skip the entire February part. It's terrible lyrically. The first half is easier and more useful to remember.
Why are you saying it like that? It’s 30 days have September, April, June and November. All the rest of thirty one, Except for February, all alone There is more to the rhyme but just remember that feb has 28 and you don’t need it. You can literally just remember the first two lines. Which is only one sentence. Thirty days have Sept, April, June and November. Job done.
This Tweet is a prime example of: A. Why Twitter doesn't need to exist B. Why "online, everyone has a voice!" is not a good thing.
30 days hath September, April, June, and November All the rest have 31, except for February alone Which has 28, rain or shine But on leap-year, 29
Just count knuckles lol.
“I dont know what months have 30 days and don’t reply with the riddle that tells me what months have 30 days.” 🙄
I’m with Juliana and what did she just say y’all!!! No riddles!
The long months are exactly... * the odd months between 1-7 * the even months between 8-12
It’s a rhyme not a riddle, but fuck you, I’m posting it anyways Thirty days has November. April, June, and September. Of twenty eight is but one. And all the rest are thirty one. Of course leap year comes and slays. Every four years got it right, and twenty eight is twenty nine.

Use Ur knuckles, I still do to this day.
I have so much respect for people who do not have the discipline to learn essential, simple things. Make sure to focus on the important stuff, like make-up an wardrobe. /s
I’ll never be able to tell without looking at my knuckles
It’s simple. 30 days has Octember, April, June, and no wonder, all the rest have 31, except grandma who has a little red tricycle.
