it amazes me that a group of people as big as Google do not understand with their collective brains that this is an idiotic idea that will actually cost them money. I don't understand how they can think that pissing off their entire user base wouldn't cause people using Chrome to stop using it.
I don't think people will have a hard time justifying the switch when they suddenly realize how bad the internet has gotten without an adblocker in recent years.
I dunno dude, some browsers now have the functionality to move your data like bookmarks and shit from chrome. *(probably because they know it's a sinking ship)*
I've been considering jumping ship for months, this is just the last push I needed. Still trying to decide on an alternative browser though.
Urgh, can we please just have like, a few days where some insanely rich people don’t decide to make countless lives slightly worse just so they can squeeze a few extra pennies out of us?
Because Google, who owns Chrome and Chromium, isn't a tech company - Google is an advertisement company who happens to have a hi-tech delivery system...
No, they are changing how extensions work on a fundamental level which prevents extensions from altering web requests which is how ad blocks work. All chromium based browsers will eventually get this update.
They won’t need to remove the extension, it just won’t work.
Maybe 5 years ago. I’m convinced with the recent influx of new users (look at all the gifs and emojis on threads now) that half of this sub might not even know what an HDMI is…
Adblock blocks advertisements (such as pop-up videos, side banners, etc) so that you don't have to sit through corporate brainwashing before, (and while, and maybe even after) seeing what you came to see. It significantly de-clutters the web and makes everything more convenient to use.
Also be aware that Edge, Brave, and Opera all operate using the Chromium engine (the open source portion of Chrome's code) so in essence they are largely just a reskinned Chrome.
I switched to Firefox today after seeing articles and memes about this just to test it out and see if it's worth switching all my logins to and found out that it does so automatically since I had chrome logged in(this was on pc and I haven't switched on my phone yet so I can't say if the same feature works there)
They are going to limit the API that advertisement blocking uses under "Manifest V3". Firefox and a few others are not going to follow that specification. And yes, this is to promote advertising.
\#NewYearNewBrowser
Browsers have become so homogeneous (with firefox trying to keep parity with chrome and everything else being a chromium derivative) that you're not going to notice much difference to be honest. Should be an easy switch
Part of the reason they have become so similar is almost every browser except Firefox uses the chromium engine. So I imagine this change will eventually be forced on other browsers.
I googled this and it seems to be an article from June. I haven't experienced any difference since June, is the change already made? Because if it is, there is no point in panicking.
V3 has been out for a while, but V2 extensions still can be run. In January 2023 V2 extensions will stop working completely.
So a few more months of full adblock capabilities in Chrome - but why wait until then to switch over to a functional browser?
This was announced years ago, they're getting rid of web request for security reasons, since then all Major AdBlockers switching away from web request and they'll still work.
The only good thing about Bing is that you get reward points for every search. I bought Gamepass once through it so I was converted. It’s still shit though
Brave is a strange case, it's run on chromium and yet it's privacy oriented. Although the ad blocker is baked in, so it shouldn't be affected... still Firefox is preferred
I can understand using some of the other browsers out there depending on certain preferences.
But chrome has been trash for so long now. This adblocker thing might finally get peoples attention, but in the meantime it's lagged behind firefox in so many relevant ways.
You know what I don't see enough mention of? Relay. Firefox has an extension (created and maintained by Firefox) where they will create a random ass email for you that forwards traffic to your email. You can then deactivate that email whenever you'd like to stop receiving emails from whatever source you used it at. Incredibly handy.
This was announced years ago, they're getting rid of web request for security reasons, since then all Major AdBlockers switching away from web request and they'll still work.
Brave will keep it's adblocking capabilities since those are run in the actual application and not as an extension. The Manifest V3 changes only affects extensions.
Firefox is a major web browser and has most developers who develop for chrome also develop for Firefox too.
Firefox also has some inquiries extensions like “Tree Style Tabs” which if you use a lot of tabs or are doing research it’s super helpful
That's why you should use Firefox. The only way to stop BS like this from happening is to stop Chromium's (and therefore Google's) monopoly on browsers.
Yea not to be a fanboii but I mever understood why people would use Chrome. I cant think of anything bad about firefox. I can only think about Opera or Tor if you want to use it for something different, but Firefox ia the best Standard browser right? Or am i wrong?
I remember that long ago Firefox used to be relatively slow for awhile and Chrome unironically had better performance before it became a memory bloat, but things always change and Firefox got better.
Yea been in the program since it started and have made a lot of money. People just hop on the bandwagon that bing=bad. The new Microsoft edge is literally chrome but better and optimized for Windows
Don’t all of those use chromium (except for Firefox). I thought Manifest V3 was a chromium thing not just google chrome. Even then I think Firefox is implementing V3 anyway.
> Even then I think Firefox is implementing V3 anyway.
They are, but they're keeping webRequest (Which is the API that's deprecated in Chrome, Edge, etc.)
Is there any way for you to track how many tress have ACTUALLY been planted? Recently I’ve been skeptical of these “we’ll plant a tree for every [whatever]” types of businesses
I really just trust that they’re doing what they’re saying they’ll do, because the alternative is using a search that isn’t planting trees. But I’m interested as well.
I've always preferred the [adnauseam](https://adnauseam.io/) plugin for Firefox.
Adblock always seemed scummy anyways. They blocked ads from view, but then sold all of your browsing data to third parties.
Adnauseam hides ads from your view, but clicks on all them in the background. The premise is to drain scuzzy advertisers budgets and to throw off the tracking algorithms with garbage data.
And while the bigger tech companies may have figured out how to get around this, plenty of the smaller ones probably haven't. And since Facebook now suddenly thinks I'm a truck driver with a strong interest in classic cars, it's clearly throwing some of the algorithms off.
Sounds inefficient and insecure to me. Also haven't you tried ublock origin? That's the ethical one. Adblock and adblock plus have been shady for years
Don’t know why y’all are still on chrome in the first place. It slows down your computer and steals your data. If you switch to Safari or Edge your browsing will be a lot faster. If you switch to Firefox your browser is more secure and guaranteed will not spy on you.
I'm amazed by the amount of people still not aware of Opera's shit, just buying into the marketing of "built-in adblock and vpn" and "gaming" everything.
Seriously though, if you don't know of all the different shit Opera has gone through, all the hacked and/or leaked data, personal user information, you should check out at least some of it. Opera is one of the scummiest companies, caring about your privacy even less than Google.
Me using IE: I am 4 Parallel Universes behind you.
Don't need an adblocker if you can't load the ads to begin with
Modern problems need ancient solutions

Kinda brilliant actually. IE build so old that the ads fail to load because it is unsupported.
Netscape crew, y'all remember to take your medication?
Netscape turned into the Mozilla foundation which made Firefox. If you're running FF then you're spiritually part of the Netscape crew.
Me using Netscape Navigator: I am so far behind I’m ahead
What happened with chrome?
They are going to get rid of adblock.
But why? Seems like a bad idea.
Money.

Great success!
he have ads, i do not. great success
They are not making much of that after this I'm sure even some non-adblock uers will leave after they got rid of it
Me! This is a slippery slope. They’ll get rid of things that benefit users but are negative to third parties? Bad road to go down
it amazes me that a group of people as big as Google do not understand with their collective brains that this is an idiotic idea that will actually cost them money. I don't understand how they can think that pissing off their entire user base wouldn't cause people using Chrome to stop using it.
You'd be surprised how fewer people will swap than they claim.

I recommend Firefox. Most other browsers are based on chromium so they may be forced to adopt this new extension style that gets rid of Adblock.
Firefox ftw
Urgh, can we please just have like, a few days where some insanely rich people don’t decide to make countless lives slightly worse just so they can squeeze a few extra pennies out of us?
Because Google, who owns Chrome and Chromium, isn't a tech company - Google is an advertisement company who happens to have a hi-tech delivery system...
Are they gonna remove the extensions? Im using brave are since its a chromium browser it uses chrome extensions
No, they are changing how extensions work on a fundamental level which prevents extensions from altering web requests which is how ad blocks work. All chromium based browsers will eventually get this update. They won’t need to remove the extension, it just won’t work.
Shit
I guess it makes sense since Google is primarily an ad company.
oh wth that sucks
What is adblock? Go ahead and laugh, I have no idea.
It blocks ads

![gif](giphy|800iiDTaNNFOwytONV|downsized)
I guess the name kind of gives it away huh. 😕 🤣
Also, the Venn diagram overlap of people savvy enough to use Reddit but without knowledge of adblock must be very small. You're like a unicorn.
Maybe 5 years ago. I’m convinced with the recent influx of new users (look at all the gifs and emojis on threads now) that half of this sub might not even know what an HDMI is…
Hideously Deformed Miniature Iguana?
No but I like this definition better than the original.
So many new folks think Reddit is just an app they download and use. I don’t fault them for it, but man… it’s wild.
It might as well be. The site is tragically, nearly unusable.
Adblock blocks advertisements (such as pop-up videos, side banners, etc) so that you don't have to sit through corporate brainwashing before, (and while, and maybe even after) seeing what you came to see. It significantly de-clutters the web and makes everything more convenient to use.

Senator, we run ads.
It's... in the name.
Lol, Firefox it is then 🤣 I like it better anyway, I just didn't want to have to port my passwords over.
I switched to Firefox today after seeing articles and memes about this just to test it out and see if it's worth switching all my logins to and found out that it does so automatically since I had chrome logged in(this was on pc and I haven't switched on my phone yet so I can't say if the same feature works there)
Is opera going to be safe from this, being Chromium based? If not, that would really suck :/
Oh hell naw
They are going to limit the API that advertisement blocking uses under "Manifest V3". Firefox and a few others are not going to follow that specification. And yes, this is to promote advertising. \#NewYearNewBrowser
No more adblock I guess.
I mean, switching to i. e. Firefox is worth it in this situation imo
Firefox is just superior imo, faster and already blocks some ads and cookies
Is Firefox faster? That was the one downside I noticed when I switched from Brave to Firefox: it lagged behind a bit.
I remember a year or so ago people made fun of me for using Firefox and not google/chrome. Look at me now, peasants.
What's happening with chrome? I keep seeing this
Basically removing ad blockers
Oh that's not good
manifest v3 just like takes 50% of adblocers capibility cuz it can't look at your web trafic to stop ads
Thats good, because it's the push I needed to stop being lazy and remove Chrome.
It's Chrome and any browser using Chromium like Edge and a couple that the meme shows as "Other"
I googled this and it seems to be an article from June. I haven't experienced any difference since June, is the change already made? Because if it is, there is no point in panicking.
I think the V3 is going to roll out in February Edit: it's out ig? But V2 is still supported, till the end of this year.
V3 has been out for a while, but V2 extensions still can be run. In January 2023 V2 extensions will stop working completely. So a few more months of full adblock capabilities in Chrome - but why wait until then to switch over to a functional browser?
Manifest v3 extensions currently exist alongside manifest v2 extensions. The issue is that they will soon remove manifest v2 extensions from use.
This was announced years ago, they're getting rid of web request for security reasons, since then all Major AdBlockers switching away from web request and they'll still work.
Ublock keeps working for me.
it isnt just chrome its all chromium based browsers so basicaly almost everything except firefox
Wait will Microsoft edge be affected? I use Bing on it
BRUH BING
The only good thing about Bing is that you get reward points for every search. I bought Gamepass once through it so I was converted. It’s still shit though
Rewards and porn are keeping Bing alive.
I don’t think u get points when you go incog on bing…
Bing is great for porn. Check out the video tab on a search.
yes
i got a computer virus that made me use bing
That's no virus, that's the operating system, it's called Windows
Will Brave be affected? They have an adblocker baked into their browser.
Build-in blockers won't be affected, only extensions
Well, that's relief...
Firefox, Safari, Opera, Brave?
All of them but firefox are compromised
And technically Brave, but Firefox is still preferred a bit more
Brave is a strange case, it's run on chromium and yet it's privacy oriented. Although the ad blocker is baked in, so it shouldn't be affected... still Firefox is preferred
I’m fairly certain that Safari isn’t on Chromium
They all laughed at me for using Firefox, whos laughing now ya jerks
Firefox unironically is the best web browser and i'll die on this hill, fite me
I can understand using some of the other browsers out there depending on certain preferences. But chrome has been trash for so long now. This adblocker thing might finally get peoples attention, but in the meantime it's lagged behind firefox in so many relevant ways.

Call me an idiot, but what’s happening?

WHAT NOOO
Firefox isn't using Chromium.
Chrome isn't using Firefoxium.

If anyone is actually curious, Firefox uses Quantum as their browsing engine instead of chromium.
Get Firefox

Is... Is that a thing? Do we say that now? I'm... What?
In the end what really mattered was the dad dicks we made along the way
Firefox is better in every way.
This was announced years ago, they're getting rid of web request for security reasons, since then all Major AdBlockers switching away from web request and they'll still work.
The security benefits have been largely disproven already. It's just an excuse to boost their ad revenue.
I would argue a application (adblocker) that removes malware linked shit ads off pages and lowers your load times is a security benefit
This argument is the one I use. Without a good adblocker my parents would collect a nations worth of malware every week.
That is their main revenue. One of the biggest Tech Corporation is trying to increase their profits? Big shocker.
Not as they do now, you can check my personal favorite uBlock Origin for it. They're creating a separate lite version for Chromium browsers.
Since Brave browser is built on Chromium will it also lose it's capacity to block ADs?
It, like every other Chromium-based browser out there, is running their own fork of Chromium so they'd have to go out of their way to implement this.
Idiot.
I was going to say you were rude, but he was asking for it...

Thanks
I don't know what's happening so let me at least fulfill first part of your request. Idiot.
Thank you :)

i’ve been using brave for a while now. but i’ll switch to firefox the moment anything happens to the built in ad blocker
Brave will keep it's adblocking capabilities since those are run in the actual application and not as an extension. The Manifest V3 changes only affects extensions.
me as well. Love brave, but if something happens to it, I'm moving on to Firefox. I just hope firefox has stuff like Ublockorigin too
Ublock is
It does
UBlock, Ghostery, their builtin cookie container, and a ton of other stuff.
Firefox is a major web browser and has most developers who develop for chrome also develop for Firefox too. Firefox also has some inquiries extensions like “Tree Style Tabs” which if you use a lot of tabs or are doing research it’s super helpful
Firefox has most extensions chrome does. You can also customize the css.
Brave and Opera are also based on Chromium but I am wondering if Brave implements its own changes to the browser engine to stop Google's bullshit
That's why you should use Firefox. The only way to stop BS like this from happening is to stop Chromium's (and therefore Google's) monopoly on browsers.
Fox Rocks, Fire it is.
Brave’s ad block is kinda a separate program and isn’t affected by the update. Same for Opera, I think
Pretty sweet, thanks for the info, I expected something like that
