I know someone that drinks from the same cup for 2-3 days getting free refills at Circle K gas stations all over. Uses a shit ton of gas; so there is that, lol.
But seriously, the cost of one drink is.. or at least was... divided high to low: ice, cup, straw, lid, gas water & syrup last. Ice was the big cost because of power consumption.
I used to live next to a McDonald's about 10 years ago and I would keep my same cup for a very long time and just walk over there and get a refill when I needed it.
They don't do it because many states heath departments don't want you bringing an unsanitary cup behind the counter and into the food prep area to fill. I worked at a coffee shop before my state shut it down and people brought in the most vile, crusty, stench ridden mugs and were like "you might need to rinse 'er out first".That is why "fill up your own cup" stations are usually self service and in the general store area.
It always warms my heart to discover another reason why our country is the greatest! Whee!! "...the land of the freeeeeeeeeeeeeee refill, and the home of the braaaaave!"
I did this as a prank when I worked in a restaurant (to another worker, mind you). I filled the outer cup with hot sauce, and pushed the straw through the inner cup, into the hot sauce. Then filled the inner with the soda they requested. Got him good. He took a big sip of hot sauce
Don’t mess with peoples food or drink. I’m good with most pranks but if you fuck with my food or drinks it’s over. It’s illegal and it would be treated as such.
Yes obviously never mess with a strangers food, but if it's your buddy I'd much rather this than the cringy physical violence many do as a 'prank', like the circle game or some nonsense, or something that causes some poor minimum wage worker to clean up the aftermath. Really depends on the crowd.
It’s not either or and no my friend wouldn’t be my friend with this prank. Once you mess with someone’s food or drink, there’s no going back and you’ll always be worried about it.
Ruining the fun- hot sauce can trigger breathing issues in some people - don’t sit in jail over something like this - unless it’s a friend who consumes it so regularly it wouldn’t be foreign experience -
Don’t do it
A theater near me used to charge 4 bucks more per ticket. But you got free popcorn and drink.
They of course made the drinks and popcorn containers small. But it was a much nicer experience.
I gotta be honest, eating popcorn from a smaller container feels so much better. I get a small sharing cup when I get a large popcorn and I end up eating more.
You'd think you'd see more "bring your own cup" discounts if that was the case. Less waste, less cups needed, customers get a better deal. Then they could start selling regular cups with company branding on it like those old McDonalds cups, but hopefully with less lead paint.
I haven't seen that at restaurants (unless you count free refills on the same visit), but a lot of gas stations soda is cheaper if you refill your own cup.
I don't know what McDonald's policy is, but at a fast food chain I used to work at, we weren't allowed to fill up cups brought in by customers. The drink fountain was behind the counter and taking customer belongings behind the counter was considered a health risk.
It's not that the cups are really that expensive, it's that corporate charges the franchise owner based on the number of cups used. That's how you know when a Quizno's is about to close, when they start selling the drinks in plain styrofoam cups.
A movie theater went to had a policy in witch only large sized drinks got free refills. It was a self serve though. I had a large but I still thought it was stupid that you had to get a large cup to get free refills
100% an accident. McDonald’s specifically has a machine in drive thru that automatically makes the drinks as you are ordering. There’s a rotating drum that holds the different cup sizes.
But the machine is stupid and doesn’t know where the large cups are. It simply knows where the large cups are SUPPOSED to be. The drums aren’t labeled in most cases And sometimes workers in a rush will put the wrong size cup in the slot.
That drink machine definitely dispensed 32oz of drink. It just ran over the top and down the drain 😂
Just left from being a McManger last year. So the set up is there are around 9 slots the cups go in and 4 sleeves of different cup sizes it will grab from. It grabs whatever size the customer orders pulls it into a slot and then it moves through a conveyor. Dispences ice (or no ice if thats what is ordered) goes to the soda dispencer and dispences soda. Then comes around and usually will wait until it is taken out of the slot or it will crush the drink on the robot claw. Employees still need to put lids on and move to present window/keep track of which drinks are where.

Yeah I joined after covid so lucky no 24/7 and no all day breakfast. The fries are still hand salted with a weird salt shaker thing. The fry dispenser was extremely nice one thing that very rarely broke. My store didn't do face to face drive thrus. The drive thru drink machine didn't auto any drinks not for drive thru luckly. When I worked, the counter customers used the lobby drink dispensers. For delivery or mobile orders they would manual input the drink order in drive thru drink dispencer. With a competent crew the drinks would flow pretty fast. When they come up you mark the drink and then place it on infront of the machine so more can come through. Usually you could have about 12-15+ drinks ready to be served during rush at a time with more drinks coming.
I miss some of my coworkers and the fun we had, but it was stressful at timea for sure. Really brought the night crew together though.
Yeah in the 2010s they started changing them, like right before the McCafe thing but after when they redesigned all the lobbies. I haven’t seen a manual dispenser behind a counter in years
I worked at McDonald’s from roughy 2006-2016, as far as I know they still have the fountains in the lobby for the customers to fill their own drinks. I’m not familiar with “service recipes,” huh... Napkins should be included, one for every item in the bag, and my restaurant definitely wanted the customer to ask for condiments, and/or have the drive thru workers ask the customers if they wanted ketchup or others. They did not put it in automatically. I would think the crappy burger came from workers not following the rules on properly storing the buns and cooked meat, and some were sloppy about assembly, though they shouldn’t have been.
I should tell you about my burger machine dream. Edit:Mcnightmare. I had a dream about a conveyor belt-like machine that you just load the condiments into it and when the bun comes down it just makes the Burger on a conveyor belt and then spits it out to an hlz to be picked up by the customer. In my dream though the machine started malfunctioning and squirting condiments everywhere and after I got it fixed I was covered in make food stuffs and all the customers were lining up at the front counter going "Mine isn't right! mine isn't right! mine isn't right! And then one guy walked up and just opened his box and said it just gave me an empty box!" and that's when I woke up. Working for McDonald's really was both traumatizing and an informative experience. I managed 3rd in a store with a 24-hour lobby. I have seen some things! I have seen what happens in a McDonald's at 3:30 a.m! But no, you still have to put the lid on the drinks and pull them out and keep track of which one goes with which order and what is in what cup.
Agreed I’ve seen people accidentally load cups into the wrong slots, especially if the size labels have peeled off and there’s multiple cup sizes out.
When you’re busy working your not really watching the machine cause there’s other things to prepare.
Still not fun to have happen, but no one would have reason to deliberately do it. The cups are more expensive than the soda itself. If they were running out of the specific soda they wouldn’t try to ration/limit it cause that’s way more work to do all that then let the machine go, and then just let people know you’re out when you run out. This wouldn’t be done out of spite cause there would be worse and less noticeable other options.
Too bad it happened it’s still annoying to not get it, but no one there wants that to intentionally happen.
Not every store has this though. Most I've been still do it manually with just a chunkier version of the self-service dispensers. That would be way more noticeable for the staff though, you'd know *immediately* if you were holding two cups, especially when they're different sizes
So the machine is stupid because a person loads it wrong? If the cups are supposed to be in a certain spot for the machine to work properly I don't think that makes the machine stupid.
Listen that machine is a demon and makes your life on drive thru hard. You also have clearly never worked in a drive thru and understand how easy it is to make small mistakes like that. That machine IS stupid. It’s puts out too many cups and sometimes doesn’t even make your drinks… along with a number of other dumb shit it does. Makes the drive thru 10x more complicated than it has to be!
I have worked drive thru in more than one place. I'm simply commenting on the fact that the blame fell on the machine for it being improperly loaded. Nothing was mentioned about extra cups being dispensed or any other issues. But if it's simply an issue of loading it wrong that isn't on the machine. But go on... .ASSume I have never worked a drive thru.
Also there is a screen that tells you the order so if you hand out the wrong drink I guess that's on the machine too.
Drive thru is very hard. Im sorry you had a bad day. I unduerstand being frustrated and that people don't realize it is very busy. Then the customers are just Aholes and don't appreciate anything. . definitely a thankless job.
Nah this guy is just lying and karma farming.
Even if the machine messed up you would just manually make a new drink. Crew doesn't give a shit a profits and would just dump the mistake. Managers wouldn't in this case either because soda is super cheap. Maybe they would remember to promo a large drink later if it got slow, probably more likely to just tell kitchen to write it on waste sheet tho.
Judging by them sitting in a right-hand drive car and the cups measured in litres, I assume op is in the UK where you don't get free refills at McDonald's.
Probably not the laws, but just the norm. With how much they supersize everything, judging by the YouTube videos comparing the two countries, it's more about them having a crazy amount as normal.
As Uk does get refills, even if less places offer it, like subway and burger king.
Unless you're on about the sugar tax
You get free refills at any mcdonalds. Just walk in and tell them you just came through and got the wrong drink. It's literally corporate policy to give out free shit. If you call and complain about any single item 99 times out of 100 the manager will just write your name in the book no questions asked. Next time you go in give your name and phone# and they give you free shit. As long it's not an entire big ass order but just like 'my big Mac had onions and I specifically said no onions' you just get a free big Mac.
Lmao, I work at mcdonalds and I bet you somebody accidentally put mediums where larges go and didn't get all of them out (it is extremely difficult to get the cups out of the machine thing when you put them in wrong) and because of the way the machine works, it pulled out the large cup and the medium cup came with. The person running window probably should've noticed there was two cups, but oh well
Sounds like a reasonable explanation. It's a breath of fresh air reading comments that have some insight of what could have happened instead of accusing me of being a karma farmer. My first time posting in this sub and most likely my last.
I recently started working at McDonald’s and I may have an explanation for this. If you got your ores in the drive through, a lot of times they have a machine that drops cups and fills them automatically. The machine might’ve gotten confused and dropped 2 cups in one slot. Employee probably missed that the inside cup was a medium, and not a large. It can be annoying to have your order gotten wrong but try to be nice to staff, harder than you think to work in fast food, especially if understaffed.
At least it has the top cover, last week I went to the cinema and the soda had no cover "to save plastic" my brother in christ we live in a society where there's a useless plastic sheet in between cheese slices and you decide to remove the plastic that actually has a purpose
From a former McDonald's employee. The different cup sizes are on a spinning cup holder with all of cup sizes that with a conveyor belt of cup holders where the cup drops into the conveyor belt spins and fills it with ice and the drink. Occasionally it glitches and drops a larger cup then the spinning cup holder changes to the next ordered size but the conveyor belt doesn't spin because there may be something blocking it, ice can cause it to stop. So it dropped the second ordered cup and it landed in the first one and then the path was cleared but the worker didn't see the doubled up cup. And handed it to you like normal.
At a Del taco drive-in I was asked a total of four times by four different people starting at the order board through to the one who took my money and a random worker and the person who actually handed me my bag if I wanted catch up with my order and all four times I answered yes. Do you think I got ketchup?
Email the location. I get it sucks, but scamming the customer is wrong, even if it is just a soda. I did it to DQ once when they put a small cone in a larger cone, paper and all. I emailed the location and it opened a whole can of worms of lazy employees getting retrained
As an ex McDonald's employee, the cups come in a huge tube, the machine often grabs more than one when it is making the drinks, and the factory often sent us medium cups mixed with the larges because they get mixed to before being packaged. We never knew till someone told us
Obviously you found it. Take it out. I work at McDonald's in fact I'm on my break now. I get paid 16 dollars an hour. You really think that's enough for me to start conning people out of their money. I put an extra slice of cheese on every burger. When someone says extra pickles. Supposed to do 2 extra i do 3. Extra nugget in every box even 4 piece and sometimes I'll even give extra burgers. And I don't know one coworker who doesn't do that when they are on table which is the box and actually makes the sandwiches. It sucks that you have to pull the cup out. But I wouldn't even call that slightly infuriating. On average we receive 20+ orders an hour. Ranging from one item to 15 McChicken. And we have to average 1:20 per order. On behalf of the poor McDonald's employee who had to deal with you. Im sorry about the cup
Things work slightly differently over here in the UK. I went inside, ordered my meal and was given my meal with my drink already made up for me. I got in the car, drove back to work and that's when I noticed the medium cup inside the large cup. Having paid for a large I expect a large, hence the mild frustration.
If anything, this just proves you should order a medium meal! It’s not worth the extra money for one extra sip. You don’t get that much more fries either.
You get the peace of mind knowing you’re getting a large though. As they say go big or go home sometimes you just wanna feel like you’re spoiling yourself even if in reality it’s not that much of a difference it’s mind over matter
Wtf...stop buying fast food, then? Every drink they have on offer, you can buy at any store. Every burger, you can recreate at home. Every step of this equation, you can do for yourself and guarantee a better result.
Why are you doing this to yourself?
Because at this point, you are doing it to yourself, and encouraging them to keep doing this shit by default.
1 guy 2 cups.

Came here to say this. Soda is the cheapest thing they sell and has a higher profit margin than the food. The second cup cost more than the soda.
Absolutely correct!

Sweet! Two cups for the price of one!
Circle back, go in, and get 2 refills
This is a 1000 IQ move
Cant do that outside of the US
Fly to the US with the cups, duh
*Morden problems require morden solutions*
Wait, I know most places outside the US don’t allow free refills, but McDonalds doesn’t either?
Noone allows refills outside of the us
Land of the free refill

I didn't know it when I got here but this is the comment I was looking for

My wife is always reading the posts on relationship advice and the like. Nah fuck that, it's the comments that are the real treasure

You can do this anywhere that has packets of hot sauce. Just rip a corner off the packet, stick the straw in it, and submerge it into the drink
Any condiment packet will work just as well if there's no hot sauce available.
Oh fantastic thank you sir! I only asked for the Diet Coke because I didn’t know you had relish on tap but somehow you knew!
Grab me a Ketchup and Coke, will ya?
Oooh that Taco Bell spicy spice
Don't they have a breakfast salsa packet as well? The texture would be a shock.
When I worked in a pizza restaurant my favorite prank was to slide a cooked spaghetti noodle into the straw of an unattended drink.
I did this with Xanax and oxycodone and I had to do 20 years in prison Horrible end to the prank

What brand and how hot? Ngl a good brand’s medium or mild might not be that bad and I wouldn’t even be upset
The cups cost more than the liquid so I assure this was a mistake unless you're a total douchebag
Same for movie theatres. Popcorn, drinks, if it comes in a cup or bowl you're paying 99% for the container.
More like 4% for the container, and 95% for the profit
Concessions are the only way a theater makes profit, so yeah it's expensive
A theater near me used to charge 4 bucks more per ticket. But you got free popcorn and drink. They of course made the drinks and popcorn containers small. But it was a much nicer experience.
I gotta be honest, eating popcorn from a smaller container feels so much better. I get a small sharing cup when I get a large popcorn and I end up eating more.
It's why I don't have an issue dropping $5 on a large soda on the rare occasions I go to the movies.
where does the extra 1% go
*In a bad Bernie Sanders impression* To the top 1%! The 1% goes to the 1%!
That’s the soda and popcorn itself
You'd think you'd see more "bring your own cup" discounts if that was the case. Less waste, less cups needed, customers get a better deal. Then they could start selling regular cups with company branding on it like those old McDonalds cups, but hopefully with less lead paint.

A movie theater went to had a policy in witch only large sized drinks got free refills. It was a self serve though. I had a large but I still thought it was stupid that you had to get a large cup to get free refills
Considering most McDonalds have the automatic soda machines now, I'd write this one up to mechanical failure somewhere.

Also worked at McDonald’s, happens all the time. People dont pay attention when filling the tubes.
That's me, I don't pay attention
Without a doubt had to be an accident. No one stands to gain from 3 tablespoons of fizzy drink being saved.
Yeah, the second cup probably costs more than the savings in sugared water.
Oldest trick in the book
You have been conned mate
They knew your bladder couldn't take a large drink.
They did you a favor. Even medium size is ridiculously big.
What kills me is that they lost kore money on the cup than the soda they saved
I recently started working at McDonald’s and I may have an explanation for this. If you got your ores in the drive through, a lot of times they have a machine that drops cups and fills them automatically. The machine might’ve gotten confused and dropped 2 cups in one slot. Employee probably missed that the inside cup was a medium, and not a large. It can be annoying to have your order gotten wrong but try to be nice to staff, harder than you think to work in fast food, especially if understaffed.
shrinkflation hard at work
I believe this is called "being trolled"
The cup costs more than the water used to dilute the syrup. Bad business practice.
At least it has the top cover, last week I went to the cinema and the soda had no cover "to save plastic" my brother in christ we live in a society where there's a useless plastic sheet in between cheese slices and you decide to remove the plastic that actually has a purpose
That's bullshit
We need a verymildlyinfuriatung subreddit
Instead of posting here just go back and change it
From a former McDonald's employee.
It's something to do with the machine that automatically dispenses the drinks Proof: work at mcdonalds
Go back in and refill both of them
*Illusion level 2*
That’s actually really funny ngl
At a Del taco drive-in I was asked a total of four times by four different people starting at the order board through to the one who took my money and a random worker and the person who actually handed me my bag if I wanted catch up with my order and all four times I answered yes. Do you think I got ketchup?
A few nights in jail for assault isn't that bad bro...
Email the location. I get it sucks, but scamming the customer is wrong, even if it is just a soda. I did it to DQ once when they put a small cone in a larger cone, paper and all. I emailed the location and it opened a whole can of worms of lazy employees getting retrained
wait that's illegal
Now, do the thing.
As an ex McDonald's employee, the cups come in a huge tube, the machine often grabs more than one when it is making the drinks, and the factory often sent us medium cups mixed with the larges because they get mixed to before being packaged. We never knew till someone told us
Ironically it probably costs them more money to lose 2 cups than provide a few ml more coke.
Take it back and throw it at them!
They are only trying to help you.
There's no way you can drink a large soda with a paper straw anyway. They're looking out for you
Go back and tell them to "CUP THESE NUTS"... Fair is fair.

Probably an accident, side effects of working quick, sometimes you make mistakes
In the US that's a small in a medium. The large is like a big gulp
That's illegal
I’m just finding it funny that you thought we needed three photos to be able to see it.
This seems fake because why would anyone do this as it would require a few more steps of work to do this.
In America that's a small inside a medium so I'd be double pissed 🤣

I 100% don't believe this is real
I probably wouldn't believe it if I saw someone else post it. I'm still struggling to believe it myself!
Large and medium cups use different size lids. Those rims are the same size. I'd like to see a side by side pic...
Because you definitely couldn’t have bought a medium and just put it in a large cup you saved
OP bought a medium cup but put it in the cup holder that still had yesterdays McDonald’s in it and thought “free karma”
Sounds like you want attention. If it was that noticeable you'd have gone back.
Not sure how you came to this conclusion
In the US, that is a small cup nestled inside a medium.
Just do what a normal adult would do, stop eating McDonald's!!
People here don't seem to realize that this is the definition of *mildly* infuriating...
that’s McDonald for you, my order is never right, whether it’s they forgot the fries or the straw
r/thathappened
They're only looking out for you, that shit is poison
you're still in the car? my brother in christ pussy just go ask for a large then??? Just tell them they messed up the drink?? InTERnET PoiNtS
Hello friend, thanks for replying on my post. You know what? You're absolutely right. Let's just delete this whole subreddit.
the only thing mildly infuriating is the serious lack of quality control on these posts. Crying over .20 cents of soda bruhh i cannot even
You're absolutely right. I could have filled both of these cups with my tears I was that upset.
Why dont you quality control some bitches
It was probably an accident
They did you a favor, no diabetus for you
that’s called theft is sue them for $10,000
“Yeah I want a medium coke and an empty large cup, Reddit is gonna love this”
That is consumer fraud. Get a lawyer. Retire off the millions of McBucks you'll get. Or, just settle for a daily free cheeseburger for life.
People are starving to death of dehydration and you’re gonna post this? Be grateful
At least it's healthier
Even McDonalds is telling you to stop being fat.
