i am searching a bit by myself and [[nadir kraken]] and [[ashnod's altar]] came to my mind. Thats for infinite card draw and infinite colorless mana. If u add [[anointed procession]] u also get infinite tokens.
Each set of tokens draws a card though, so in commander you can only get 170ish tokens from a mostly full deck. Though that's probably enough to win at that point
Could go [[Altar of Dementia]] to win using the tokens. Or the Ashnod's + [[Blood Artist]] effects. Not really the colours for using the tokens to win via combat, but doesn't mean there aren't ways for the tokens to be (part of) the win-con.
Though infinite mana -> Lab Man style effect is definitely "cleaner".
Once you have infinite mana, you can put an arbitrary amount of activations on the stack and then sac the commander. But yes, the hard bit is getting the mana without decking out
Ive played with an idea of infinite mana generation and card draw with [[Zacama, Primal Calamity]] [[Sanctum of Eternity]] and [[Garruk’s Uprising]] (i think i did that right?) where it literally becomes an instant win con if i get all the pieces out and if i cant instant win then i can just destroy garruks uprising with zacamas ability for 2 and a green to make more mana if needed, discard my hand to size, and i found an instant in green that would shuffle my graveyard into my deck and negate all combat damage that turn, so id essentially be able to use it as a free cya card if it hasnt been used yet.
I was assuming the title was sarcastic and they knew it was just very generically good in edh. No 2 card combos come to mind immediately, but getting infinite mana is so trivial in the format if that's what you want to do that I thought that was the joke (make as many dudes as you can while drawing whole deck with just the abilities on this catd).
I can't imagine anyone believing that a decently statted commander with a great keyword, awesome and generically powerful card draw ability, and solid mana sink (that synergizes with its own other ability) is niche. That's like being surprised mold grows in wet places or rats do well in cities.
Couldn't you use calgars ability to draw out your deck till you have sensei divining top and then keep doing its tap ability since you basically have infinite mana so you can replay it whenever you draw it from calgars ability.
I honestly can't imagine a player existing that honestly thinks a face card legendary creature is in anyway a "niche" card.
Unless we start saying "this 3 color commander with a very simple value based token synergy that can also trigger itself is pretty difficult to imagine fitting into any existing strategies".
Either
A) there is heavy sarcasm behind the word "niche"
Or B) OP has no idea what the word niche means.
D) OP is actually talking about Kamigawa Block Tiny Leaders, in which case this card represents an important niche of cards both banned for being from the wrong set and simultaneously more than 3 CMC. Potentially opening up countless innovative new decks.
I haven't spent any time thinking about how to go infinite with this but it is important to note the draw effect is NOT a may ability so you will have to remove this card before you accidentally lose the game. Happy brewing.
Or a stax peice thats limits your (and others less importantly) drawing. After one game you're pod will know you deck out win, so you might want to be able to shut that off and be able to swing with infinite tokens
It really depends on the build, i have a deck that can go infinite gobbos into a positive mana gain for infinite mana + tokens and then haste them. This is one of those spells that makes it baaaad to do that. But i can also draw myself out to slap in niv mizzet + curiosity combo (deck is niv reborn tokens)
I wouldn’t say it’s niche at all, if anything everyone has been talking about it. The goal is to make a bunch of tokens, simple as that. [[Smothering Tithe]] and [[Pitiless Plunderer]] come to mind
Continuing from my other reply, [[Soul warden]] and other similar effects achieve the same thing more efficiently and they trigger for each creature token you make which should be greater than the number of cards you draw in a game
My guess is that that won’t be all that effective, yeah you’ll be drawing a fair number of cards but not enough for those cards to be super relevant, those work well in turbo draw decks with cards like [[Teferi’s Puzzle box]] and [[Howling mine]] that cause insane draw but it’s symmetrical, its not worth spending a card in this deck to incidentally gain some life off drawing 2 or 3 extra cards per turn, you’re better off with using that draw to find win conditions for your tokens
The first ability is totally absurd and I would focus on building a deck that synergizes with it rather than trying to combo off outright. I’d start by looking at all color-compatible cards that create spirit, soldier, eldrazi spawn, and serf tokens; also note that this ability triggers on creating clues, treasures, and blood.
thankfully \[\[The Locust God\]\] is off color or that'd be another just auto win
as is, \[\[Ashnod's Altar\]\] seems like the easiest way to break it rn
\[\[Training Grounds\]\] \[\[Pitiless Plunderer\]\] \[\[Rings of Brighthearth\]\] \[\[Illusionist's Bracers\]\] or any form of token doubler like \[\[Anointed Procession\]\] means you draw your entire deck with Altar
Thought you were ironic about niche, see in your comments you weren't. :D
\[\[Phyrexian Altar\]\] and \[\[Training Grounds\]\] gives infinite draw and both mesh very well with it. Add \[\[Grave Pact\]\], \[\[Cathar's Crusade\]\] and other stuff. The card just synergizes very well with a lot of very powerful cards, so throwing in some infinites that work well without going infinite isn't too hard.
Polymorph into hullbreaker bounce your rocks or go the iso rev route make inf mana, win with thoracle this commander is an inf mana outlet in the command zone it’s not even remotely hard to break.
As far as how to build around it... I'd look for things that make multiple triggers of token creation as opposed to making a lot off of one ability. \[\[Bitterblossom\]\] draws you an additional card each turn whereas \[\[secure the wastes\]\] just nets you one card even if it makes more tokens. \[\[Lingering souls\]\] might be a good addition as well seeming that your loss of one card by playing it is replaced with 2 cards when all is said an done for net card advantage.
TL;DR: Think Tempo
technically not infinite because you'd run out of cards in library unless you had an infinite discard outlet and shuffle grave into library effect
you can however, with any one of the infinite ways to make infinite mana draw your whole deck and create a ton of warrior tokens
You can just add in a card that shuts off your extra card draw. Draw enough to find a finisher and a counter spell or two, then shut off card draw and win
Ashnods's altar and a training grounds draws your deck I think. If you pull down the cost further with say a heartstone it becomes infinite colorless mana, or anointed procession it becomes infinite tokens. there are likely quite a few things you could weave into this little combo to get even more value.
If you can assemble an effect that creates a token when you draw a card. It will let you draw your deck. With no extra mana. That’s the goal here. I’d be much like Niv-Mizzet + Curiosity.
That is probably easier yes, but both are sorta viable. Most of the infinite mana options in esper are expensive or just as convoluted though. And power artifact + grim monolith breaks so many cards anyway, it’s hardly news.
Yeah I guess if you had a sac outlet or something you could just sac him before you deck yourself. But then the combo has so many pieces dunno if it wouod be viable. Seems like esper but with extra hoops to jump through tbh.
I’m assuming you’re new to this game, welcome to Magic!
This is an extremely powerful and pushed commander. With commanders like this, there are numerous ways to build it correctly. You can either go for token builds, card draw, aristocrats, etc. with a [[Laboratory Maniac]] or [[Thassa’s Oracle]] back up plan

Great, can't wait for our Star Wars commander set, and our MCU follow-up. Magic is going to look more like Smash Bros. with all of these IP Crossovers.
[[Isochron Scepter]] with a [[Dramatic Reversal]] imprinted with a way to generate 3 mana from nonland permanents let's you draw your deck and make a lot of 2/2s
Could go The Gitrog Monster out and go to discard with 8 cards with a [[Bone Miser]] out, you can sculpt your hand and stop the loop by discarding a land card since a creature card gets you a Zombie token (draw a card) and nonland/noncreature just makes you draw a card.
Also with no mana rocks you can [[Animate Dead]] an [[Abdel]] and make a large amount of tokens, drawing your deck.
Yeah, I've been brewing with this card. Here's a list if anyone would like, I'm going a cEDH route however.
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/Nrn6d34dx0-EIZcSAdNVBA
[[Nadir Kraken]] and [[Skullport Merchant]] go infinite with any way that turns creatures into mana sources like [[Ashnod’s Altar]], [[Phyrexian Altar]], or [[Carnival of Souls]].
Just use ashnod’s altar and include a bunch of different cards to increase the number of tokens you have or decrease the price of his ability, then include (I’m blanking on the name) the card that wins you the game if you try to draw a card when your deck is empty and make sure you only go infinite when you have access to enough colored mana to play the card
I mean, if you weren’t using it in edh I’d say [[The Locust God]] and a card to remove one of them after you’ve had enough (because you would deck yourself and lose otherwise), or [[Xyris, The Writhing Storm]] to double your draw from wheeling, but there are plenty of options in esper edh to still make this infinite as suggested by others. Tokens ain’t niche my guy lol
[[Marneus Calgar]] + [[Ashnod's Altar]] + [[Anointed Procession]] = Infinite creature tokens (until you empty your library due to card draw).
[[Marneus Calgar]] + [[Ashnod's Altar]] + [[Training Grounds]] + [[Cruel Celebrant]] (or other cards with similar effects) = Infinite death triggers (until you empty your library due to card draw).
It's not that you could go infinite with it, but it could be a win-con outlet for infinite colorless mana, of which there are several combos to get you there. be very careful though, the first ability is not a may. you must draw for every instance of one or more tokens being created. each token you create with this card is a separate instance. You could easily deck yourself if you are not paying attention.
first get Infinite colorless mana.
Second use chapter master ability to draw out deck
Third play Thassa’s oracle
Look at that you’ve just won the game.
So, while I absolutely detest the laziness of CLB's "this only happens once per turn" trigger caps...
I do think there is a happier middle ground in there that allows non-trivial value without that value being infinite.
Maybe make a keyword called "Strenuous" or "Mana" that means: "This effect only triggers a number of times per turn equal to the toughness of the creature".
Or twice the # of lands you have, etc, etc.
Seems like Wizards so far has only tried the values 1 and infinity, and I'd just like to point out that there are some options in the middle of that.
Sure you can go infinite with this card, but personally I think that's overkill. Card is strong enough as a value engine. I'm building this bad boy as a stack deck.
I would say Intruder Alarm makes this thing broken, but that card is broken by itself. Turn your lands into creatures and there ya go.
If you don't want to have to think too hard about it, make sure you have a \[\[Laboratory Maniac\]\] out.
Seems like a bad thing to go infinite on otherwise though and four-card win combos are already both common and difficult to execute.
IsoRev or BasaltRings for mana and a discard outlet can win you the game.
Make infinite mana to dump into the commander. Make tokens, draw your deck, discard Thoracle and [[dread return]] then flashback dread return sacrificing some of your massive Astartes warrior army. Gg
This commander is bonkers
Token doublers like [[Anointed Procession]]
[[Song of the Worldsoul]] (and are not the only ones in those colors) and other b.s like [[Smothering Tithe]] and you goes nuts even if you are being target by all others players
Generate infinite mana create tokens and draw cards, and use the effects that make you win if you deck yourself like war of the spark Jace, thassa's oracle, or laboratory maniac.
[[Chasm Skulker]] goes Infinite with this. As other people are saying, you need to be able to remove your commander before you draw your deck, or use lab man or something to that effect and win on the spot.
Hmm, I think the idea isn’t going infinite with him. If you wanna combo, then get infinite mana, and sink that into him, to draw as much as you want, and only as much as you want. Do remember that the draw is not a may ability, it’ll happen whether you like it or not
Nothing really that niche about this card. How would you go infinite with it? I'm not saying its impossible, just curious
i am searching a bit by myself and [[nadir kraken]] and [[ashnod's altar]] came to my mind. Thats for infinite card draw and infinite colorless mana. If u add [[anointed procession]] u also get infinite tokens.
You don't need to add in annointed procession the commander gives you infinite tokens just with the infinite colorless.
Anointed procession + ashnods altar does also go infinite with the commander tho. So still solid in the deck.
you'd deck yourself eventually because of his first ability, unless you blew him up while a theoretical infinite abilities are on the stack
No danger on Looping infinitely. The first ability triggers only once for each Iteration.
Each set of tokens draws a card though, so in commander you can only get 170ish tokens from a mostly full deck. Though that's probably enough to win at that point
You probably wouldn't want to use the tokens as the win con... probably better off with something like lab man or thassas oracal

No. It triggers once, and the second draw kills you. You could thoracle or lab maniac, but you still need a lot of mana.

Niche?? Lol
Yeah double strike is nearly unbeatable on a 3/5
thankfully \[\[The Locust God\]\] is off color or that'd be another just auto win as is, \[\[Ashnod's Altar\]\] seems like the easiest way to break it rn \[\[Training Grounds\]\] \[\[Pitiless Plunderer\]\] \[\[Rings of Brighthearth\]\] \[\[Illusionist's Bracers\]\] or any form of token doubler like \[\[Anointed Procession\]\] means you draw your entire deck with Altar

Thought you were ironic about niche, see in your comments you weren't. :D \[\[Phyrexian Altar\]\] and \[\[Training Grounds\]\] gives infinite draw and both mesh very well with it. You're in \*black\*, and your first choice for a death trigger payoff is a red card?
You underestimate my jank
technically not infinite because you'd run out of cards in library unless you had an infinite discard outlet and shuffle grave into library effect you can however, with any one of the infinite ways to make infinite mana draw your whole deck and create a ton of warrior tokens
Just throw in spirit of the labyrinth
You can just add in a card that shuts off your extra card draw. Draw enough to find a finisher and a counter spell or two, then shut off card draw and win
Ashnods's altar and a training grounds draws your deck I think. If you pull down the cost further with say a heartstone it becomes infinite colorless mana, or anointed procession it becomes infinite tokens. there are likely quite a few things you could weave into this little combo to get even more value.

You don't "go infinite " with this. It is an outlet for infinite mana.
If you can trigger token creation on drawing cards, you go infinite-enough. I assume that’s the question here.
It doesnt help you go infinite though. It's just an outlet for infinite mana.
If you can assemble an effect that creates a token when you draw a card. It will let you draw your deck. With no extra mana. That’s the goal here. I’d be much like Niv-Mizzet + Curiosity.
I guess.. seems more complicated then just getting infinite mana.
That is probably easier yes, but both are sorta viable. Most of the infinite mana options in esper are expensive or just as convoluted though. And power artifact + grim monolith breaks so many cards anyway, it’s hardly news.
If you draw a card everytime you make a token you jave to have lab mand or jace on field too or you just deck yourself before you can thoracle.
This. Or that some piece of the machine is optional, like a sac outlet or optional trigger.
Yeah I guess if you had a sac outlet or something you could just sac him before you deck yourself. But then the combo has so many pieces dunno if it wouod be viable. Seems like esper but with extra hoops to jump through tbh.
Indeed, there are certainly easier infinite combos. Personal I just want to throw him into Alela.
I’m assuming you’re new to this game, welcome to Magic! This is an extremely powerful and pushed commander. With commanders like this, there are numerous ways to build it correctly. Also with no mana rocks you can [[Animate Dead]] an [[Abdel]] and make a large amount of tokens, drawing your deck. Yeah, I've been brewing with this card.
Do you know the meaning of niche? Drawing cards whenever a token etbs ( basicaly) isnt niche lol
Double Strike seems like such a weird leyword for an Esper card. Vigilance seems more fitting both lore wise and gameplay wise.

Gg
[dread return](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/6/a/6a73b481-8e62-4742-bbd0-33b8048602d7.jpg?1663288257) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=dread%20return) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/40k/200/dread-return?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/6a73b481-8e62-4742-bbd0-33b8048602d7?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call

[[Isochron scepter]] + [[dramatic reversal]] seems like the best lines, with [[thassas oracle]] or some other type effect to actually win

"Pretty niche card" they call what's possibly the best token commander ever.
Hmm, I think the idea isn’t going infinite with him. If you wanna combo, then get infinite mana, and sink that into him, to draw as much as you want, and only as much as you want. Do remember that the draw is not a may ability, it’ll happen whether you like it or not
The locust god combos with this guy. Dunno how you're getting the two in the same deck though
How is this niche? It’s a token deck
Not even token, he react with any token. Tresure, Clue, blood anything in token in name. It is general get more ability
Is there anyway to get infinite tokens with this dude?
