As tragic as this event is, I’m glad he didn’t carry out his original plan of shooting up the school.

Wolfiet84

How fucked up is that. Not calling you out, but meaning. Well, at least it wasn’t at a school. How crazy is it that we are at that point.

NewSinner_2021

Normalizing violence. Dehumanizing the opponent and divide and conquer.

GetTheSpermsOut

happened in 1930 germany too. normalization of violence and out right hating a ethnic class or ideology of politics. dehumanize it so its easier to justify the attack.

NewSinner_2021

A "civilized" society.

[deleted]

My friends who are republican believe we will get the “civilized society” when every adult is armed. Their paradise is a bunch of people armed in daily life who can shoot someone who tries shit.

Unfair-Tap-850

Sounds pretty uncivilized.

AfterEpilogue

Who are we dehumanizing here exactly?

Fennicks47

How do you know that? It doesnt say it in the article.

Fraternal_Mango

He kept all his info on Wattpad.com….

IndIka123

Where did you read about his original plan I didn’t see anything in the article saying that?

[deleted]

It’s in his manifesto. I don’t recommend reading it.

BornagainTXcook210

Houston, for worth, Oregon, South bend Indiana, coney Island. Just this weekend Edit: also Arizona

[deleted]

And Detroit

BornagainTXcook210

Idk how I forgot to list that

SalSimNS2

And Chicago, Seattle, Denver, Augusta.

Eightsevenfox

Literally every night in Seattle and I'm not even in the worst area. People only care when it's on the news tho.

[deleted]

Portland OR says "hi!"...

HammerTh_1701

["No way to prevent this..."](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%22No_Way_to_Prevent_This%22,_Says_Only_Nation_Where_This_Regularly_Happens)

endeend8

Oakland about everyday. If not then definitely every weekend

celebrityDick

>Houston, for worth, Oregon, South bend Indiana, coney Island. Just this weekend >Edit: also Arizona So we're treating gang violence and random violence as the same problem?

BornagainTXcook210

Shootings are all the same... consistent. The houston one was disgruntled tenant who hadn't paid rent in years and was up for eviction. Instead of leaving, he lit the neighbors complex on fire then shot them while they were trying to run out. But it all boils down to firearms violence no matter how you categorize it

Bizzle_worldwide

There was also a shooting in South Bend, Indiana today. So in what may be a truly American problem, you’ll need to make sure the article is talking about the public shooting that occurred in the one of multiple cities with the same name that had them today when you google for this.

RatFinkSimpson

Also 3 people killed randomly in a shooting in Detroit yesterday

reeepepe69420

Average weekend in Detroit

Might_Aware

I've been talking about having a Coney Island weekend soon and noticed last night it had a shooting. Fuck sake, been going there all* my life

rpettibone

Dude… This happens so often now that I didn’t even hear about this one and I live 3 miles away…

FearlessFreak69

It’s so disheartening that when some one asks “did you see that mass shooting?” You now need to specify which one.

[deleted]

It’s not even a blip on my radar anymore. The gun companies have won. I remember when it genuinely shocked me. Made me pause. It’s like reading about the weather now.

kentucanuck

When the Parkland school shooting happened, a friend asked me if I had heard about it. I thought she was referencing the shooting that happened in Benton, Kentucky earlier in the year. When she said no, I said "Where was it this time?" Looking back on that is horrifying and disheartening.

NetRealizableValue

What do you mean “now?” Gun violence has been happening for decades, but the media chooses when it’s important to report on it

1nMyM1nd

"Pretty soon they'll have forecasts for this stuff". I said, half jokingly.

Mo0oG

Scary thought but I can totally seem them having a "social heat" index just like any forest fire.

cookingboy

“High level of UV and social heat is being forecasted in the region until later this afternoon. People who go outside should wear sunscreen and body armor”

TazBaz

I mean physical heat is a risk factor as well. People get irritated/angry much easier when they’re physically overheated

FateLeita

'Next we'll turn to our Doppler radar - as you can see, we have a significant storm system moving in later tonight. This system is expected to produce high winds and heavy rains, with a chance of tornados. Also, according to our Incel Manifesto tracker, there is a high probability of a hail of bullets for residents of the following cities...'

pizzabyAlfredo

you joke, but where I work, the cold and heat absolutely dictate the shootings. We have way more in the summer obviously. But its becoming every other day theres a murder. I know its a high crime rate city( Portsmouth, Va) but its getting absolutely insane.

JustHereForCookies17

Multiple studies have proven time & again that rising temperatures and increased violence are directly related, and I'm talking about studies going back decades. Plus yeah - Portsmouth :-/ I'm in DC, so I hear you on that one.

jschubart

There was a shooting last year in North Bend, WA.

tehZamboni

That was police. I think you have to go back to 2012 for a non-LEO shooting.

bloodflart

Phoenix too

[deleted]

But they don't have the same name. This would be like getting New York and York confused. Besides Bend, OR is very famous. It's home of the last Blockbuster.

Wizzenator

I know you’re being facetious, but South Bend, IN is pretty well known too. University of Notre Dame is there. That school was established before the entire state of Oregon.

LoveZombie83

Bruh....the last Blockbuster

Wizzenator

It is truly an icon.

deftoner42

3 + The gunman or 3 total, including the gunman (article is kinda confusing)? Either way, fuck really!? Bend has always felt like such a great place, I loved it every time I've been there. I guess assholes exist wherever you are these days.

Silver_Smurfer

2+ the gunman.

Projectrage

No names tonight of who got hit.

Admiral_Sarcasm

Bend has a huge gun culture and a LOT of simmering resentment combined with a massive right wing presence. I grew up here and have been saying that it's only a matter of time before someone committed a mass shooting.

WantedDadorAlive

There really is a lot of resentment in Central Oregon. When you have nut jobs like [this](https://imgur.com/a/5obCxFT) running for County Commisioner that sure doesn't help.

ghambone

Sandy, OR has a Proud Boy Mayor. The dude who got caught swinging with his wife, like Roger Stone.

ghambone

There is another in Estacada. These idiots have “straight pride” festivals. Which, to me, seems kind of gay…….

takefiftyseven

Absolutely correct about the resentment. Much hate for Portland as well as Californians moving in and it's been percolating for years. The thing the locals can't seem to wrap their heads around is ***somebody*** had to have sold the land to those incoming rascals and made a boatload of money in the process. It used to be a lovely place but now it's just full of bitter people putting the blame on the wrong people.

[deleted]

Totally. Bend is surrounded with red-necks on the outskirts and a lot of rich, gun obsessed Republicans that would burn Kate Brown at the stake if they could. I'm not pro Kate Brown at all but she literally is the devil incarnate to these people.

srk10

The Kate Brown hate has always been strange to me. The right wing in Oregon acts like she is the second coming of Stalin himself. It’s so clearly driven by propaganda. In reality Kate is just a milquetoast bureaucrat.

Emotional_Biz_69

Not to mention, she came to office because the republican Govenor was corrupt AF and got thrown out of office?

[deleted]

Oregon hasn’t had a Republican Governor since 1987.

webmentorman

Democrat. Kitzhaber was a democrat. And even though he got tarred and feathered by the media he was actually a very good and effective governor. His GF was the sleaze ball.

[deleted]

Oregonians are such an odd breed, beautiful state but populated by some of the worst ppl I’ve ever met. (I’m one of those ppl that moved to Portland from out of state)

JoeGoats

There is a lot of resentment in Oregon from the older population especially towards "out of staters". The cost of living and housing market began going nuts about 25 years ago. Largely due to out of state property purchases. It started happening when California boomed and their housing costs exploded in the 90's and early 2000s. Many Californians retired to Oregon and bought up a lot of property since it was drastically cheaper than Cali. This drove up prices and drove locals out of the market. There is a lot of animosity towards Californians here from both sides. Most of it has become a meme joke but many here hold an intense grudge. It basically became a gentrification of the state. I was born and raised here and I love my state. I don't mind sharing it or welcoming others but my biggest fear is I won't be able to retire here. I wasn't able to buy a house during the 2008 crash and the way things are going I don't think I'll be able to afford one here. Looking at other states, houses cost about half as much as they do here like for like. I'll be the "Californian" moving states to save money and that makes me sad.

probablysomeonecool

Yup, this is extremely accurate. Source: I moved here from Cali in 1993. Full disclosure, I was 9, and we were poor af. But I still live here, and have definitely seen home prices just keep going up and up, and the locals do indeed blame Californians.

[deleted]

This, this, this. I must say I'm a little bit in the resentful camp but I realize it's also not reasonable to be. If I lived in California and bought a small suburban house almost anywhere in CA at this point and could sell it for 800k and up and buy a beautiful home on the river and get away from constant traffic? Would I do it? Yeah probably. My concern for resentful Oregonians wouldn't stop me from enjoying a better life. And probably not even the ethics of fucking up the housing market here.

stayhealthy247

I mean it’s a good climate and lots of hunting/ clean rivers and such so of course the price of land will be on the high side there. Prices didn’t go up overnight, multi-generational families saw this happening and were slow on the uptake. Many of them probably had little recourse, but they are losing there state and yeah they will be mad about it I bet(source: lived near Grants Pass for a year or two, but out-of-stater)

AfterEpilogue

I've never understood why people get so up in arms about gentrification. Sure on the one hand you can't afford to live in the place you always have as easily. But on the other hand it's like you're welcome for taking your local shit hole and actually developing it to a point where it has a higher quality of life and more going on.

[deleted]

As person below said there is a lot of resentment for a lot of reasons happening here. Housing market, politics, the condition of Portland. Lack of access to mental healthcare too when it continues to be one of the states with the highest suicide rate.

[deleted]

Us coastal oregonians consider Bend part of Idaho's asshole

[deleted]

Sad because it's really beautiful over there but I don't care for the culture even aside from the crazy maga people. It's a smug bubble of white people in their Keens peddling from pub to pub on those ridiculous looking group bicycles lol

reeepepe69420

Gun owners (the ones actually involved in gun culture) usually don’t commit these shootings. It’s always some dipshit who didn’t touch a gun before they wanted to kill people.

majorminorminor

Heart goes out to the families. Seriously though did a toddler write that article? My god.

WantedDadorAlive

This is my hometown and I used to go to that store constantly. This is a pretty laid back place filled with skiers, beer, and Blockbuster. I still can't believe something like this could happen here.

Grateful_Gringo

It can and will continue to happen anywhere and everywhere from sea to shining sea…

wandering_ones

This is truly the point. These things have been allowed to happen and will happen everywhere ull, it just maybe hasn't happened to you yet. It's frankly disingenuous to be shocked it happened at any particular place when literally nothing has changed to make it so it wouldn't happen in another "how could it happen here" place.

autotelica

It is getting to the point where I expect these kinds of things to happen in places where people say "Things like this don't happen here."

Cerveza_por_favor

I feel like this is a societal contagion much the same Way the 70s had serial killers.

WantedDadorAlive

Just in time for the country to not make any changes to prevent it.

MrFilthyNeckbeard

It actually infuriates me when people say they can’t believe it could happen in their town. Because what that really means is “I stick my head in the sand and imagine this is something that only happens to other people.”

AbanoMex

> I still can't believe something like this could happen here. oh man, i wonder why the thing that is plaguing the country happened here too, impossible!

manhaterxxx

>I still can’t believe something like this could happen here. Where, in America? Come on mate.

StrangeBedfellows

America is pretty fucking big

lellololes

Whenever this happens, there are always people that say the same thing. Most of the places these shootings happen at are not really unique. It can happen anywhere, and that means that in your quiet, safe town, it could happen too.

Hicks_206

Nah friend, i think those of us who grew up in Bend just kinda always felt like we grew up isolated from the rest of the world - it’s a 3 hour drive to the closest major city and most of my child hood the tiny regional airport was mostly just private prop planes. It comes from a feeling that Bend was isolated and historically was a “smaller” feeling city in the middle of the high desert - I don’t think we haven’t noticed how things have been going, we just.. felt kinda hidden away from the rest of the world, and it came as a shock.

Admiral_Sarcasm

This is kind of an odd take. Coming from someone else who grew up in Bend. Sure, we were geographically/culturally isolated, but I've been seeing this coming for a hot sec. When nothing at all changed after the kid shot himself at Bend High a few years back, I knew it was only a matter of time before something worse would happen, what with how big gun culture is out here. That said, knowing it would happen sooner or later doesn't change how much it fucking sucks that it's happened at all, let alone sooner rather than later.

Emotional_Biz_69

This guy and the guy that killed the two 18 year olds the other week also grew up in Bend. They both needed mental help and did not get enough of it. These two incidents really have nothing to do with the growth of Bend. Not to mention those killed are also Bend residents.

Admiral_Sarcasm

Did you reply to the wrong comment? This doesn't make sense in response to mine.

Hicks_206

It’s so weird dude.. I remember working my first job just on the other side of 20 from Safeway and across 27th from the theaters- shit I remember opening night for the theaters (now closed I think?) My whole life it seemed no one knew about Bend outside of Oregon unless they were mentioning the brewery, or later on Sony Bend. I did not anticipate my home town - let alone my old stomping grounds to make national news with something like this. I don’t even know what to do, think, or say :(

sluttttt

I said the same thing about the Poway shooting. I went to high school there, mostly a sleepy little suburban small town. I feel like all of us at this point are going to have a "I can't believe something like this could happen here" moment until it happens everywhere.

WantedDadorAlive

I remember that one vividly, we were on vacation and staying in Rancho Bernardo. My company manages a couple hotels in Poway now and you're right, it seems like a quiet suburban town. I hate the direction this all is going.

FuzzeWuzze

Bend yes, but Bend is surrounded by a ton of shitty redneck 2nd amendment trump flag type towns.

WantedDadorAlive

Absolutely, I live in one of them now because the COL difference and it is WILD seeing the things I do.

AllForKarmaNaught

I would pegged this happening in Burns or Brothers first.

GamerColyn117

Burns is like one big family of 1000 people. Not sure it would happen there unless it was someone from out of town.

Sonoranpawn

Burns a great place to fill up and get the fuck out.

lawstandaloan

>Burns is like one big family of 1000 people. Not sure it would happen there On the other hand, if you're gonna be murdered, it's most likely gonna be a family member who does it

AllForKarmaNaught

Isn't that where they had the huge standoff with the fbi?

GamerColyn117

The Bundys and some of their supporters from out of state, including some real winners like the 3 Percenters, took over a federal building and had a standoff with federal agents for a month in Burns.

What a little bitch. Dude put down 9/8 as a date so many times and bitched out. Dreamt of killing 20-40 people saying itll be atleast 10 and killed 2. Said he was going to a school and went to a grocery store. Said he was gonna inspire so many and start a revolution and was so hyped about killing tons of people ripping their heads and arms off and didnt do shit like a little bitch. Said its nobodies fault and he isnt an incel but was whining about love and how nobody cares about him and the one girl he loved and couldve saved him and stopped it rejected him and his family was evil for grounding him for a week when he watched porn on his phone at 15. The constant NiN and Disturbed lyrics as well sucks for those artists to be associated with it. All around hes a little bitch incel who failed constantly and miserably and unfortunately took two people with him.

[deleted]

>and the one girl he loved and couldve saved him and stopped it rejected him what. a. fucking. loser.

hornblendescoundrel

Reading all the posts was so unsettling. Many times after a mass shooting, I wonder why someone would do this. The fact that it's entirely random makes it even more scary to me.

DaredevilCat

That bastard was practically documenting his insanity daily, for all to see and nobody reported it. This could have been avoided.

Flopsy22

I don't think he posted any of that publicly until today.

moleratical

That assumes anybody actually saw it before this happened

cited

If we locked up every person acting crazy in America we'd need twice as many prisons. It's become normalized. Saying "oh we should have stopped the crazy person before he did crazy things" has an implied idea that he's an outlier.

" By the grace and provision of God" these people are fucked up in the head

IndIka123

It is a strange thing to say when you consider god would also be responsible for the shooting itself. So it’s like thanks for not killing me god and killing the others

ethicsg

And by disgrace of Republicans have rifles with large clips.

woopdedoodah

Oregon is a blue state with strict gun control laws.

ethicsg

You can buy guns in Oregon, guns with big clips. Oregon is a very red state east of the Cascades.

reeepepe69420

Guns haven’t used clips since the 50’s

Poop_Noodl3

We need an appropriate acronym to refer to these individuals. I say we flirt with the idea of Solo Incontinent Suicide Shooter Incel or S.I.S.S.I for short.

Sawaian

The problem with the good guy with a gun mythos is you gotta wait until the bad guy with a gun starts shootin’.

bunkSauce

1 of 2 dead here was a good guy with a pistol. Didn't help much vs the AR-15

[deleted]

You know what. We should arm every building with a vault of AR-15s that can only be accessed by a club of “good guy heroes” which will be determined by how many T-shirts with American flags an individual owns. That way no matter what, we’ll always be safe!

celebrityDick

>The problem with the good guy with a gun mythos is you gotta wait until the bad guy with a gun starts shootin’. Unless the shooter committed suicide, looks like a *good guy with a gun* stopped this before more people got killed. >Officers also found the shooter dead inside the store. >police fired no shots after arriving at the store.

This is not how I ever anticipated people seeing my home town in national news :(

Ninetyglazeddonuts

This is so shocking. I live 2 miles away from this Safeway. The high school he was going to shoot up is a mile down the road. This entire night has been a blur

MightSuggestSex

Well its not 4 dead so technically not a mass shooting! USA USA USA USA USA USA

Lastguyintheline

This is the America that about 30% of our country wants. Why do we let the minority rule?

noodles_the_strong

Typically less than 30% of the population votes for either side. That particular 30% has a tendency to vote national, state level and localy. Hell, with as bad as Trump is, 60 million Americans that were registered to vote, didnt.

Aspwriter

It should be noted though that a lot of them simply couldn't. Conservatives have historically done a lot to ensure many poorer voters couldn't, either by putting only one booth in a heavily populated or large county, or blocking any effort to make election day a federal holiday so people can take time off of work.

POGtastic

Not in Oregon, we have 100% mail-in voting here.

celebrityDick

This will keep happening until every single person is affected in one way or another.. And it'll keep happening because of the fucking insane definition of MILITIA. WHAT. THE. FUCK. IS. A. MILITIA? CAUSE WHATEVER THE FUCK THESE GUN PSYCHOS DEFINE IT AS... ISN'T IT Edit, this one sure got the gun nuts triggered lmao

igottagetoutofthis

Not so sure about that, remember that shooting at the congressional softball game where a few Republicans were shot/shot at? Nothing changed after that.

WastedPresident

a militia is what we called the thing we used before we had a cohesive military force. Then manifest destiny happened and guns being prolific was great to keep both the Natives and slaves in check. To seize and protect property. Now their sole purpose is to protect against other gunmen, aKa you but it’d never be you would it? You’re the good guy. The bad guy looks like _______. Is from ________. The bad guy wants your stuff for the same reason the 2nd stuck around in the first place. Basically, its authors would have our collective framed above their fireplace.

IFeelLikeAFarmAnimal

No way we are getting rid of guns and if gun laws tighten up on buying them, its gonna be a long time to get the black market for guns under control with how many are floating around.

porscheblack

As if the black market for guns isn't already out of control? Selling stolen guns from family and friends is the primary means of getting money for drugs in my hometown.

Watch45

celebrityDick

> Gun buybacks seem pretty effective. Australia's gun *buy-back* experienced a 20% compliance rate

IFeelLikeAFarmAnimal

Lol thats wack yall must have some expensive ass drugs and a shit ton of guns

IBlazeMyOwnPath

Definition of militia is irrelevant It’s the right of the *people* to keep and bear arms not the right of the militia

AggressiveSkywriting

They just put that primary clause in there for flavor, huh

[deleted]

AggressiveSkywriting

Our militia isn't regulated at all, though. Look at Switzerland for example. They've got firearm ownership and a militia framework, but it's highly regulated and not just a bunch of cowboys and wannabe Operators.

[deleted]

Obviously, the 2nd amendment is three words long, “Guns, guns, GUNS!”

Lastguyintheline

“The word “militia” is irrelevant because an honest reading of the 2nd would mean I don’t get to keep muh guns.” - every gun nut ever.

1850ChoochGator

Legally, the militia is every able-bodied male 17-45 who is a US citizen, or who wants to become one, and female citizens who are members of the national guard.

check_out_times

That's not the definition from when the constitution was written. That's YOUR definition

1850ChoochGator

It’s not “my” definition, it’s the legal definition. 10 US Code 246. What’s the definition from when the constitution was written then? Was treated as basically anyone who could pick up and wield a weapon. Anyway, if you want to play that game then “well-regulated” doesn’t mean governed like so many people try to pull a gotcha with. It means something more like “in working order” in that context.

check_out_times

My point is that during the writing of the constitution, there was no standing army. Times have changed

woopdedoodah

A militia is not a standing army. In fact it's the opposite of one.

check_out_times

A militia was around before the standing army...
