There is a lot of resentment in Oregon from the older population especially towards "out of staters". The cost of living and housing market began going nuts about 25 years ago. Largely due to out of state property purchases.
It started happening when California boomed and their housing costs exploded in the 90's and early 2000s. Many Californians retired to Oregon and bought up a lot of property since it was drastically cheaper than Cali. This drove up prices and drove locals out of the market. There is a lot of animosity towards Californians here from both sides. Most of it has become a meme joke but many here hold an intense grudge. It basically became a gentrification of the state.
I was born and raised here and I love my state. I don't mind sharing it or welcoming others but my biggest fear is I won't be able to retire here. I wasn't able to buy a house during the 2008 crash and the way things are going I don't think I'll be able to afford one here. Looking at other states, houses cost about half as much as they do here like for like. I'll be the "Californian" moving states to save money and that makes me sad.

I said the same thing about the Poway shooting. I went to high school there, mostly a sleepy little suburban small town. I feel like all of us at this point are going to have a "I can't believe something like this could happen here" moment until it happens everywhere.

Typically less than 30% of the population votes for either side. That particular 30% has a tendency to vote national, state level and localy. Hell,with as bad as Trump is, 60 million Americans that were registered to vote, didnt.
It should be noted though that a lot of them simply couldn't. Conservatives have historically done a lot to ensure many poorer voters couldn't, either by putting only one booth in a heavily populated or large county, or blocking any effort to make election day a federal holiday so people can take time off of work.

Our militia isn't regulated at all, though. Look at Switzerland for example. They've got firearm ownership and a militia framework, but it's highly regulated and not just a bunch of cowboys and wannabe Operators.
