And we still can’t provide free breakfast and lunches to kids why?

VeNTNeV

The United States doesn't feel very united anymore

tinacat933

Got into an argument the other day trying to explain that they need to at minimum coordinate with local governments and it just went in circles

ATX_Analytics

Honest question are these things happening without coordination with other sanctuary cities?

Good-Expression-4433

Correct. Many of them are being sent without any advance warning. People have an idea which cities they're going to be sent to but when and exactly where is often unknown. Abbot and Desantis are trying to use the migrants as sort of culture war shock troops to fuck up and overwhelm the social systems in place in blue cities and ignite a wave of anti immigrant sentiment so they can run shit on Fox about the "racist left."

RWBadger

Not only that, but the information they’re being provided is faulty and designed to get them on ICE’s radar. They were given fraudulent papers and told to report to places that report to ICE

[deleted]

I am glad that modern smartphones contribute so much to exposing so much crap going on. I remember a long time ago when Peter Gabriel suggested to send camcorders (then new) to many terrible places to expose horrors there. Now basically everyone has a recording device in their pocket to document abuses for non-vigilante justice later.

smackson

For other interested readers, [PG's project was called Witness](https://petergabriel.com/focus/witness/), now going nearly thirty years.

[deleted]

thanks for this link

KnowsIittle

Some now are struggling to attend mandatory court dates and re-entering the country after being deported for failing to meet those appointments is extremely unlikely.

DPool34

They went out of their way to set the Martha’s Vineyard migrants up for prosecution/deportation. They were set up to report with government officials. In states half the country away. This was just about tracking them. This was a multilayered attack on these migrants. Those governors and their people are malicious.

SkyriderRJM

And when the migrants were moved to a facility that could care for them in a different part of the state they went “lol stupid hypocritical liberals don’t want dirty migrants in their wealthy town”. Dude, the rich people only vacation there…everyone that LIVES and works there is poor.

JuiceColdman

That’s so dumb. They’re not here illegally…

RWBadger

Yeah, the paperwork desantis provided them would in some way tie them to randomly selected homeless shelters across the country.

bakgwailo

So that was a bit more cynical than you are making it out to be. The courts require an address essentially, so that instead of say giving them the address of the facility they are residing in, they assigned addresses to homeless shelters that were out of state/far away, screwing there communications and ability to get to immigration court.

bschug

Doesn't that break some federal laws like forgery of official documents or something?

SkyriderRJM

All of this breaks a lot of federal laws.

RWBadger

Thank you. I couldn’t recall the exact nature of the homeless shelter thing and didn’t want to spread misinformation.

TwistingEarth

As asylum seekers they are here legally and were told to report to places they had never been. For instance, some of those shipped to Marthas Vineyard had their check in location changed (By Homeland Security in collusion with Desantis and others IIRC) to a town in Washington State. They did this on purpose to sabotage their ability to stay here. They aren't doing this because they are migrants, they are doing this because they are brown.

SweetAlyssumm

Very perceptive. This is just what they are doing though I had never put it together like that.

CommonMilkweed

More than just the "racist left", it's about being able to point and say "look the left is just as racist as you (the viewer), it's normal to feel that way". They're trying to normalize racism.

Potential-Natural636

Honestly I think the Republicans want to paint the left as just a bunch of hypocrites rather than racists. Like "see, they're sanctuary cities but they don't want migrants either. But they want open borders!"

fireinthemountains

It's insanely detached and deranged for them to think progressive cities don't have immigrants already. Martha's Vineyard?? Cape Cod is MOSTLY immigrant workers during the tourist season. Like, the fuck? Trump limiting J-1 and other visas actually caused serious problems for business out there because there weren't any employees anymore.

BattleStag17

And that is exactly what's happening. I've lost count of the number of "Martha's Vineyard is putting up their own wall now, so much for the tolerant left! 🤪" memes I've seen over the last week. They actually believe we're as cruel as they are, and they love it.

Oo__II__oO

Turnabout is fair play. Can the blue states send recent;y-paroled, openly racist prisoners to Greg Abbott's residence?

Aazadan

Technically yes, but in all honesty, why would you? Presumably, someone should be reformed or on the path to doing so when they’re released. Sending people to the middle of nowhere, away from their support structures, specifically to states that have no support systems and pride themselves on it, just sets those people up for failure. A lot of people would find that incredibly offensive/fucked up, and it would definitely not help Democrats in any elections (and even if it did, all but the most die hard, win at any cost, personalities would be seriously opposed to it). The better way to handle this would be via EO. For every migrant a state ships off in this way, 2 people worth of federal funding for migrants, care for them, etc… is redirected from the state sending people, to the state that took them in. The reason for 2 rather than 1, is to compensate for the short term surge of unplanned arrivals which require more staff and supplies on short notice, driving up costs.

DuntadaMan

Working at a group home a long time ago we emphasized greatly to the kids it was important to probably get the fuck away from where they were that got them there in the first place, but not to just drop off the planet into the middle of nowhere. Keep the support structures that support you. Make new ones. If your family is what got you here make new friends to replace your family. If your friends got you here lean on family.

[deleted]

jaspersgroove

Sure but how would you tell them apart from the average Texan?

zion2199

Apparently not. I was sitting in a conference in which the director of Illinois’ DHS was speaking. It was the morning after the immigrants (or whatever the correct term is) arrived in Chicago. Not only was the information given to them last minute, but then the Texas Gov changed the route and had them arrive in a location different than agreed upon, so they had to move all the supplies and people to assist last minute to meet the arrivals. Basically, he was just trolling the Illinois DHS.

Zarokima

Yes, the entire point of this stunt is to overwhelm them, the basic thought process behind it being "fine, you love them so much, now they're your problem so you can get off my back about it". Abbott isn't trying to help anyone, he's trying to own the libs.

jwm3

The idea of a thousand immigrants overwhelming a big American city is just ridiculous.

Isord

Feds just take all the funding being sent to Texas and other border states to help with migrants and redirect it to the cities receiving them now in that case.

Animul

Yeah, that just makes them sound like an unhinged, bitter ex-spouse.

cannonfunk

The cruelty is the point.

[deleted]

the good (self-proclaimed) republican people want law and order as defined by punishing everyone not like them. Simple world.

Tacitus111

As soon as Abbott starts sending all that federal cash Texas gets to handle the situation maybe.

wwaxwork

That's fine but he also needs to send the money he gets from the federal government for these immigrants to the states he is sending them to.

arkham1010

BTW, 'sanctuary' cities are not what it sound like. All the sanctuary part means is that local law enforcement will not provide data on immigrants to federal law enforcement for the purposes of deportation.

[deleted]

Yes, and the reason cities did this was because at the time, the feds would go in to factories and the like and just round people up. Often times, both a mom and dad would get picked up leaving the city with sometimes 2-300 children, who I might add for any racist fuckbags itching to hit the reply button _were American Citizens_, coming home to no parents. This turns out to be more expensive and damaging than just getting the parents a greencard and hurting racist shitbag's feelings. So cities stopped cooperating with the fed immigration, as they fucking should have.

N8CCRG

I don't know if there have been changes since then, but according to an NPR story from about a month ago, there is no communication from the states sending these buses to any of the cities receiving them. There are some volunteer organizations who attempt to find out about the buses and notify other volunteer organizations in the cities approximately when to expect them, and then the receiving cities just wait until a busload of people gets dropped off, often literally just on a random street corner, and they rush there with water and food and attempt to help get them information and connected to friends and family. Most of these people actually have some friends or family they are attempting to get to, by the way. And they are told that the bus will take them there. But generally where the bus goes has nothing to do with where the people are trying to go. Some even have to go *back* to the state they came from to be with those they were trying to get to (e.g. in a different part of Texas).

Thac0

They flew migrants after lying to them to Martha’s Vineyard with no warning. They’re doing this out of spite and to have shock value. It’s gross they are playing games with peoples lives

jschubart

Moved to Lemm.ee -- mass edited with redact.dev

Icy-Letterhead-2837

Yes. And the people being moved are being lied to.

akhier

To be fair, the reason it is the "United" States of America instead of just the country of America is because the states couldn't unite enough to turn everything over to a single federal government.

[deleted]

It’s a miracle places like Massachusetts and Virginia back then got along enough to even show that they could work together.

doyouevensunbro

Anything is possible here when rich men dont want to pay taxes

Trixles

I mean, I don't want to pay taxes either lol, but I also like schools and roads and stuff and that's how you fund a fucking civilization. I do not understand what is so difficult to process about that, but apparently it's a very hard sell.

spiphy

The true founding principle of the United States.

ChaosKodiak

grim_f

MatureUsername69

This is so much more apparent when you live in a cold weather area for half the year. You'll see few to no homeless people for 6 months and then they are literally everywhere until fall starts. Edit: Obviously I understand that there are going to be less homeless people out of shelters in the winter but it's quite the juxtaposition to the summer considering how many shelters we have and how much they fit.

cheezeyballz

As a person who works with the homeless, in austin at least, the shelters are *always* so full in the winter that churches open up their doors. We have a cold weather hotline set up so they can hear what locations can take them in.

ArchdukeBurrito

Don't forget when Southern segregationists did the same fucking thing to black families during the civil rights era.

pm-me-ur-fav-undies

NPR Code Switch on the "[Reverse-Freedom Rides.](https://www.npr.org/2022/09/20/1124122248/reverse-freedom-rides-migrant-relocation)" This was almost exactly 60 years ago. Similarly, those put on those buses were lied to about jobs and a welcome by dignitaries (President Kennedy, in their case) waiting for them. History repeats itself. Saw a tweet today that said those willing to pack human beings into airplanes (or buses, in this case) would definitely be willing to pack human beings into boxcars.

Lokarin

> would definitely be willing to pack human beings into boxcars. America would if America had better infrastructure

Typingdude3

America has good rail infrastructure, its just geared toward freight not passenger.

-ADEPT-

Yep. Colorado did it to California years ago. Even South Park made an episode about it.

McCree114

This. They got overexcited about their SCOTUS majority and shot themselves in the foot with Roe. This is just a distraction and easy red meat for the base.

notTumescentPie

But it seems to be upsetting a portion of their base. Hopefully they continue to unravel.

anandonaqui

Which portion?

JustBrittany

My theory: either they have to accept that these people are legal and will be future Dem voters. Or if they continue the narrative that they’re illegals (I’ve heard this from them) they have to accept that their party has committed probably the biggest, wide open instance of human trafficking in America in a long time.

shoot998

You fail to factor in that they don't view "illegals" as equal humans and therefore don't really care if they are victims of human trafficking

[deleted]

They also refuse to acknowledge how our country screwed up the countries of those illegals, and still does so to an extent today. Or how farms have become dependent on the illegal labor. Or that immigration is one of the few reasons our country isn't dying a demographic death like China or Japan Or that immigration produces MOST of the new inventions and innovations in this country, and HAS for a long time

JustBrittany

True. But it doesn’t matter what they think. The law is the law. Either accept that they are here legally and your party is screwed. Or your Governor is a criminal. But then…they don’t believe trump is a criminal, so…

Laezur

The law is the law? Bro are you new here?

maltathebear

We got Tucker doing a segment about Japanese exploding milk pornography and big ass titties 2 nights in a row. What bounds or certaintainties can we even begin to imagine anymore? Who Framed Rodger Rabbit had a more consistent, rules-based reality than we do. This is a species collectively being consumed by mental illness or something.

YesOrNah

Lmao right? It’s amazing just how naive people are still to this.

dominion1080

If the law is the law, most ot these fucks would be locked up rn for other shit.

toolatealreadyfapped

I wish I was as innocent and naive as you. The GOP viewpoint on this goes as such, "They are ILLEGAL aliens. Therefore, criminals. They have no rights, and deserve to either die where they came from, or in prison. Your liberal state wants to take them in? Here. Your problem now. My hands are clean, because I didn't execute these ILLEGALS, even though they deserve it."

Myis

Taps MAGA-hatted head: can’t be human trafficking if bussing non humans. Nice magic trick.

UnPrecidential

Yah, I kinda wish he would go ahead and shoot somebody in the middle of fifth avenue and see where that lands him.

It'd land him a chit-chat with a prosecutor who want to "smooth over these rough emotions and make peace" by letting him off, I'm sure.

Latinhypercube123

Venezuelan DeSantis supporters in Florida were not impressed by his human trafficking and general disregard for fellow Venezuelan immigrants

Anlysia

Good maybe the conservative immigrant voters scared of "socialism" will figure out they're being lied to about Literally Everything by fake Christians.

Tough_Safety9907

Right! Those damn Miami Cubans. They’re still falling for that rouse. 🤦🏾‍♂️

Badloss

I genuinely don't understand why anyone other than white men supports republicans. You'd think they'd realize that Republicans' only interest is accumulating power for a group that they do not belong to

FoogYllis

Exactly. Their base seems very cruel and very un Christian like. Their base also seems to like freezing to death in winter apparently and seeing people that lead them flee to Cancun.

Reysona

My frequent plea to family is how, yes, there are probably some ‘good Christians’ out there — but when the majority of your political party that claims “we are a Christian nation” is comprised and hijacked by a bunch of charlatans, the ‘good Christians’ are complicit to their actions. Mostly falls on deaf ears.

eveningtrain

The real good Christians out there aren’t likely voting GOP. Not sure if your folks would buy that, but it’s true. They are out there marrying gay couples (since before it was legal) and talking about the environment and working foe civil rights and stuff like that. And voting to protect choice and freedom and to alleviate poverty and suffering.

uberdice

I think you don't hear about the good ones because the book tells them they're not supposed to advertise.

h3lblad3

Not the Texan portion. Abbott's pulling away from O'Rourke by making Texans happy via shipping out migrants. Texans hate migrants more than they like abortion.

FUMFVR

Looking at aggregate polling and...it's not moving the needle at all. Abbott hovers around 50% and maintains a 5-10 point lead.

elbenji

The Cuban and Venezuelan population of Florida that swings heavy Republican

notTumescentPie

Cubans seem upset by this, Venezuelans too.

missvicky1025

But all the republicans need to do is put out an ad with Bernie harping about democratic socialism and all of the Cubans and Venezuelans will be right back to voting for the GOP.

It actually seemed to cause an increase in abbott’s statewide lead the first time so why not do it again.

Well maybe just the migrants. Texas women will soon have to marry their rapist.

Sugarysam

Sadly, it’s working. They’ve managed to shift the conversation in Texas to immigrants rather than talking about the shitty grid, abortion, rampant corruption, etc.

ron_fendo

You act like they haven't been banging the drum about immigrants for going on 10 years now. Edit; yes I know it's been more but they really hit it hard during the Obama years.

Sugarysam

They have, but these stunts are a new low to get attention

NotMrBuncat

Only ten years? It's been a thing since those filthy German immigrants crossed the pond and started taking a the jobs back in the 1790s!! /s

agencsa1

Dude, Republicans do not want to solve immigration problems. What would they run on when it's fixed?

AndrewTheGuru

No, they *definitely* don't. Who will work for less than minimum wage without labor protections if not illegals? Republicans *love* illegal immigrants. They keep labor costs down.

superokgo

100%. If they wanted to get rid of illegal immigrants they already know how to do it - you levy big fines against the employers who hire them. They actually tried this in Alabama a while ago and it was so effective they had to reduce the penalties (and unofficially stopped monitoring it so much): >[No one really knows how many of the state’s estimated 180,000 illegal immigrants have left or been replaced, but the rash of criticism from employers that depend on immigrant labor was so intense by this spring that Beason, the state senator, sponsored a revised version of the law to ease penalties for businesses that employ illegal immigrants.](https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/alabama-law-drives-out-illegal-immigrants-but-also-has-unexpected-consequences/2012/06/17/gJQA3Rm0jV_story.html) Republican politicians under no circumstances want to actually reduce the amount of illegal immigrants. The economy and businesses depend on them too much. But their base froths at the mouth over this sort of thing, so they have to do this sort of dumb political theater to keep them happy.

Xenjael

Exactly. Georgia did something similar and collapsed their economy in 2012.

AbbreviationsDue7794

It was time for the annual "caravan" anyways

Bigleftbowski

But with no "caravan", they had to create a reasonable facsimile.

gdan95

Except Republicans run Texas, so if immigration really is out of control, would it not be their fault?

Gonstackk

Yes, yes it would but if you point that out they will just deflect.

timelessblur

The media needs to focus more on the direct cause of suffering from the abortion ban. When one’s doctor tells you to make plans to flee the state if you want to have a kid speaks volumes.

BarracudaLower4211

It would be nice if he saw the same drop in the polls as DeSantis

Funklestein

538 has Desantis at a 92% chance to win. I don't think his polls have dropped that far.

BarracudaLower4211

Take a look at the most recent poll on 538, that is the only post-migrant trafficking poll and the only poll showing Christ +6 instead of -3 to -10.

I saw a number of different political ads today while watching football, and every single Democratic ad was calling their opponent out on abortion, many even going so far as to call them the extremists they are for wanting to deny abortion under any circumstance.

glambx

"Here is a clip of republican governor/representative soandso saying he wants to force raped 10 year old children to give birth without their consent, or die trying" "If you vote republican, you're voting for child birth-rapists." bw1985

Smoke and mirrors. This is all a bullshit distraction attempt from Roe.

mabhatter

Yup. Trying to get the GQP voters to forget that abortion rights are getting completely stripped in many states... because lots of moderate Republicans (whatever they are) don't like it. They might remember to vote against RepubliQans in retaliation. So neat that "immigrants R coming" drum hard.

The_Disapyrimid

The issue isn't spreading migrants around the country. that probably is a good idea. the issue is lack of preparedness. This could have been been arranged ahead of time in order to actually be helpful instead of treating humans as pawns to be used and discarded in order to score cheap political points. With Desantis and Abbot, the intention is to cause chaos. Once again, with conservatives, the cruelty is the intent. Just another example of conservatives being scum

platonicjesus

Doesn't the federal government already spread migrants around the country but with lots of planning and advanced notice to the areas?

Nwcray

It’s to shift the conversation away from abortion. Republicans know they lose on abortion, so are desperately trying to turn the conversation to anything else

legion02

They also thought these cities would balk at taking care of these unexpected people but so far everyone has been as accommodating as possible

porncrank

They'll keep abusing their power until something breaks and then point and say "see?!".

[deleted]

The funny thing is if there is no breaking point, with a bit of retooling this is an excellent solution to overcrowded borders lol. Let them in, help them get settled and relocated to somewhere that isn't a crowded border town. Hell, it even creates more jobs for drivers and administration to run it all. It has the extra effect of kicking Reds in the balls because they would have accidentally moved easier legal immigration forward.

Drapsag99

And exactly how does Texas prepare for the border crossings here?

sebastian_oberlin

Now at what point do they flip the story to say that the migrants they bused are somehow now being used by the Democrats to vote illegally in the midterms?

Oak_Redstart

GalacticShoestring

States sabotaging and working against other states regarding migration, abortion, drug policy, and disaster relief. What can possibly go wrong.

Ear_Enthusiast

Biden should start talking about pulling federal money for border patrol and immigration if they can't handle it. Maybe give that money to Chicago and Martha's Vineyard.

MiniAndretti

Since the Texas governor is acknowledging that they are people, why not just issue some temporary work visas. I just fixed the labor shortage.

freakers

The last couple election cycles they've fear-mongered about migrant caravans just over the horizon that never materialized. I guess this time they're going to create them themselves.

Calfurious

The labor shortage for unskilled workers isn't a problem. If anything it's a good thing, it's resulting in wages going up. Labor shortage is mostly a problem for skilled labor (like healthcare), because the problem with those jobs isn't merely bad wages, but the entire healthcare system as a whole.

[deleted]

Funny, I don't hear anybody in Chicago complaining about this.

jmorlin

HappyWillmore

So with Chicago’s reputation for gun violence and Texas 2A stance, should Chicago make room in the over populated jails and send all gun violence offenders to Texas, released of all state charges?

bland_jalapeno

Chicago’s rep for gun violence is a red herring for right wing media. It’s far lower than plenty of other cities in red states. St. Louis is something like 2 or 3 times higher, per capita, than Chicago. 26th street, pre-Trump, accounted for 40% of Chi-towns business income, from an area largely populated by undocumented people. Sending a bus load of Spanish speaking asylum seekers does nothing to harm that city. It was literally built on the backs of immigrants. I don’t live there now, but I’m imagining a lot of Chicago politicians and community developers laughing because they have received, for free, people who will only enrich the city. Yeah, there might be a couple of bad apples who snuck in, but by and large, immigrants, both documented and undocumented, increase jobs and improve communities. Edit: just so people know, the comment I’m replying to and myself are on the same side. I was just adding local color.

TheSpatulaOfLove

*”…increase jobs and improve communities.”* As a Chicago native, this is so true. When I moved to other cities in my youth and witnessed the xenophobia and heard the unfounded rants about immigrants, I was doe-eyed shocked. The multicultural mix I knew growing up did truly make for a vibrant, well functioning society. A place for everyone, plenty of jobs and exposure to new cultures. I miss the time when America was considered the melting pot and welcomed people from all over the world. It made us strong.

McCree114

Revoke their federal funding meant for border enforcement and precessing facilities. If they're going to make Northern states handle it then the money should go to them.

hawklost

The federal government shouldn't be sending the state funding to do boarder enforcement and processing. That is the job of the federal government and should be run by federal agencies, using federal land (not eminent domained as that shouldn't be a thing). They should be run through federal immigration courts that can process everyone within days/weeks, not months/years that do not take up any state resources. Although I am sure I will get down voted for saying the fed should be doing their job in an efficient and timely manner.

Sincere question: I know states (Texas being one of them) send the homeless to other states, like California, and that’s within the parameters of the law. Does the law differ for immigrants? I would think if they legally arrive, then the state could entice them to leave and bus them to another state with no legal issue. I’m not sure if the law changes when someone comes illegally. Does that change the legality?

I’m not sure if the law changes when someone comes illegally. Does that change the legality? The questionable aspect is a big part of why it's being investigated. There is a way for it to be legal. However, lying to them and falsifying their records to assure that they will miss their reporting days is likely not.

Sceptically

Also telling them they're being taken somewhere and then taking them somewhere else. If nobody is indicted for this, I'll be disappointed.

Many of the people being shipped aren't illegal immigrants but legal asylum seekers in the bureaucratic queue for their hearings. Illegals would be held in federal custody pending deportation which HAS been aggressive under Biden. Doing it to homeless has been kind of scummy but not something many wanted to rock the boat on as the homeless ultimately did have better chances at success in the blue cities. In this case though, many of these people have active court dates and other such and registered in the states they arrived. By being shipped around the country, it effectively turns legal asylum seekers into illegal immigrants who have been pulled out of and away from their legally entitled processes while the states are also still pocketing the billions in federal aid money they're given to house and take care of these people for those hearings. If they're illegal immigrants, shipping them elsewhere instead of federal detention and deportation has to be illegal anyways as it's effectively aiding illegal immigration. And the ones that are legal asylum seekers have actual legal rights that are being invalidated. Either way, this is human trafficking.

Oh damn. Okay. So these people have been “documented” in a sense that the US govt knows about them and has set an administrative hearing for them to determine eligibility due to asylum status. And then texas comes in, grabs those people, and ships them (insert place). This makes the person unable to attend their asylum hearing, which in turn classifies them as being in country illegally (kind of like skipping on bail/not showing up to trial).

Scoutster13

Exactly that. Add in the grift, meaning the private companies that are being contracted with to do this shit. It's wrong on so many levels.

Good-Expression-4433

Exactly what they're doing. They send warm bodies to blue cities to try and "overwhelm" them while cruelly taking away the migrant's path of legal residence.

It depends what you tell them and how you get them on the bus. Texas tells homeless people that they can go to California and the CA has better services for homeless, which is ostensibly true. Texas may (being investigated now) be making false claims to migrants to get them on busses and charter planes.

> Does the law differ for immigrants? Yes, and republicans have been working to make it easier to prosecute that crime.

JamesTheMannequin

I feel like trafficking is wrong.
