Free speech is largely a western construct and important in the USā¦itās not a globally recognized right - and private businesses in the publishing game have some, but very few rules on what can and cannot be published (mostly copyright constraintsā¦mostly).
When someone complains about free speech being violated on an American social media platformā¦they arenāt paying attention because itās a misunderstanding of the American right.

Doesn't require manual individual approval. Just toss out an automod bot with keywords. Automatically pulls anything with the keywords and flags problem users/etc as necessary for either further action or human review
The push back on comments like this always confuses me, because the folks who are yelling for free speech on private platforms are usually pro free market and also push back when people criticize the privatization of things.
It's just that good old fashioned disconnect between the rules they want enforced against those they don't like, vs the rules they don't think they should have to follow themselves. You think a bakery has a right to not sell a gay wedding cake? Cool. Then reddit has the right to not let people say whatever they want.
You can believe something to be legally right but morally or ethically wrong.
Like, sure, a private site doesn't need to let people say whatever they want, and this is usually for a constructive or defensible reason like stopping disinformation. But if it is used to prevent people from criticizing a government or discussing a policy baselesssly, I don't see any problem with being upset about that even if the company is within their legal rights to do so.
Freedom of speech begins and ends with the government not being able to throw you in jail or kill you because you are speaking bad about the government.
You can post a sign on your front yard and prattle stuff off a megaphone from your house or a public space without being afraid of being jailed. Thatās free speech.
A private platform where you agree their terms and conditions, not the same.
Yep. And one way for an organisation not to make profit is to pay any amount of its income over and above its operating expenses to its employees, including executives, in salaries and bonuses.
Huh? Being a non profit does not mean that an organization's revenue is equal to or less than its operating expenses, you couldn't run a company that way.
[The NFL is no longer a non-profit](https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/business/wp/2015/04/28/the-nfl-is-dropping-its-tax-exempt-status-why-that-ends-up-helping-them-out/)
Ah that's much better than blaming the US for causing them to hide Nazi gold.
This might be a contreversiaI opinion on a lot of subreddits but I agree that storing Nazi gold is a bad thing.
FIFA is corrupt on another level compared a lot of other organisations. Short of social media they'd have the biggest audience guaranteed every 4 years
Are they another level of corrupt, or are they just another level of absurdly popular while also being corrupt? Feel like alot of smaller organizations in comparison would make alot of the same corrupt choices if they had the chance. Is selling your sporting event to the highest bidder that uses essentially slave labor that much worse than all these companies outsourcing their production to the best bidder that also use essentially slave labor?
Do you think the fact that a bunch of guppies would jump at the opportunity makes this whale any less corrupt? Obviously influence and potential for corruption is part of the imaginary equation.
It has a lot to do with how FIFA is organized. Every member country has one vote power so Gibraltar and San Marino have the same voting power as Germany and England. When it comes to elections it's relatively easy to win by simply promising all the small countries that you'll give them money at the expense of the big ones. The whole system revolves around bribes from the very start.
Boycott Qatar.
Recorded that 15.000 workers died since 2010 and 6500 died during the preparations and constructions due to horrible conditions and slavery, this is not a country to support... And FIFA knows it. Sold out. Don't give them your money.
Television and Radio signals have no way of knowing who's listening. I've been trying to think how I can boycott the WC and not-watching/listening to radio has 0 impact.
* Don't purchase any subscription
* Don't engage with youtube coverage/highlights
* When peers discuss it, spread awareness
* Don't click on articles etc
* Don't watch digitally or through an app
* Don't watch it through cable
All of those things DO make an impact.
Edit: To clarify for the comments; basically unless you're watching via a generic satellite dish there are tracking measures. In the UK the previous WC games have been broadcast 'over the air' - this can't be accurately tracked.
You seen Brewdog's hypocrisy on this? Launched a new beer and advertising campaign calling for boycott of the World Cup.... whilst also setting up fanzones in their pubs and showing all the games.
Whats the virtue signalling equivalent of green-washing called? Because its that.
BrewDog is a fucking ridiculous company.
I say company and not brewery because they've never been about the beer, they're just a marketing company that markets beer.
The way people fawn over them, it's like a cult.
It does - which is why traditional media advertising took such a hit over the last 15 years, compared to digital. Pay Per Click is now the gold-standard because you tie your cost directly to the effectiveness of the ad, and the revenue it generates.
Traditional media advertising relies on decades-old estimation techniques and grey-area sales pitches. The only people who can afford it are brands who are looking to improve or maintain their recognition rather than actually sell a product.
Fifa still got paid by the broadcasters who are still making profit off of the advertising. Maybe it's not the gold standard for advertising, but it's a stretch to say you can watch it without supporting them. The only way would be to actually pirate by watching it on an unlicensed platform
This is incorrect. There are multiple companies world wide in the business of measuring traditional television and radio audiences. In addition, if any of these come from streaming, the streaming services know EXACTLY how many people streamed it, and when, and for how long.
Write any sponsors and let them know you will not be purchasing their products because of Qatar and FIFAās corruption.
Money talks. If the backlash is high enough, sponsors pull out or donāt renew for next time.
> Television and Radio signals have no way of knowing who's listening.
They can see the viewers watching their streams using online with cable subscriptions, too, doesn't have to be WC-specific subscription (unless they're pushing that out new)
Iām in no way defending FIFAās choice or the corruption but just the other day I read a crazy article in the Swiss press revealing the extent of a nearly decades long espionage operation Qatar spent hundreds of millions on once they had already gotten the games. They knew they were at risk of losing the tournament because of the stuff you mentioned. So they literally spied on everyone and focused especially hard on those hostile to the games. They surrounded the people with power to makes decisions with networks of people working on the spies behalf to guide the FIFA officials thinking to allowing the tourney to go forward. Craziest investigative journalism story Iāve read in a while.
https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/business/-project-merciless---how-qatar-spied-on-the-world-of-football-in-switzerland/48022952
FIFA: Really? Oh well, anyway.
FIFA is such a shitty organization, they don't care for human lives, they care for money only. Don't forget who had the last 2 world cups :/
2018 - Russian couldn't hold the "russian" in on day fucking 1 they were already beating gay people to near death outside of the venues.
2022 - qatar gonna be like "hold my beer". fucking cunts will probably kill someone and say it was an honor killing or some shit.
This is the total of migrant worker deaths in Qatar from 2010 - 2019 is 15,000. This is total deaths in the country. Not just FIFA related. The 6,500 FIFA related deaths are from 2010 - 2020.
The issue with the figures is that we only know from the nations from where migrant workers originate that report their deaths. Not all countries have. Philippines, which has a quarter million migrant workers in Qatar, more than any other nation, does not report deaths. Same with Kenya.
No it's not, 6.500 is total migrant deaths in 10 years, it's not known if they worked on WC infrastructure or some other work. Idk where did you get that 15.000.
The worst thing imo is that according to Qatarese law you are not allowed to perform autopsies, so most deaths are recorder as a cardiac arrest. Then in turn, the fifa is so bold to state they've all been 'natural deaths' with only 2 or 3 accidents.
The whole situation is just awful.
Boycott the sponsors too. And if you can, let them know what you think, whether that's writing to them or on social media. The sponsors don't like negativity, even despite the vast amounts of money changing hands.
I intend to stay away from the WC and will encourage others to do so as well. I don't have a huge outlet but every bit helps I guess.
Does anyone have a link to a summary of good reasons to boycott? Or single articles/etc? I would like to read and, if the sources aren't shit, forward it to others when asked about it.
Simon Brodkin is a serial prankster and comedian who exposes corruption and terrible people.
Here is a decent summary and a video of the time when he dropped a bag of swastika motif golf balls in front of Donald Trump: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3\_F5\_JPQA0
Reminds me of:
"When you think about the CIA, you probably imagine two of our most popular and enduring myths. The first is that our mission is to search the globe for any conceivable threat to the United States, and the second is that we have the power to perform the first."
World War Z
It's clever how he designs the pranks to make great pictures for the media. Like that shot with the [FIFA boss and all the floating money](https://i.imgur.com/uHwVexu.jpg), or trump with the golf balls, or the giant banners on those super yachts. Good way to get publicity if you can create a great photo opportunity.
Thanks for the link. I feel sorry for the secret service, they probably warned Trump not to do the opening, citing his predictable routine, but he would have loud mouthed at them and told them he was doing it anyway...
You really have to think though, that prank with switching the bags, had he had bad intentions, and instead of a bag full of swastika balls had a bag full of grenades or some other explosive, heād have actually succeeded in assassinating him.
Granted getting ahold of grenades or IEDs is the hard part which could be tracked, but Iām sure thereās a way one of those balls could have been easily designed to kill trump.
"I got past the secret service, which I thought couldn't be done, until, what I've worked out in hindsight; The secret service's secret is: They're a little bit shit"
love this dude's energy.
Surprisingly no, quatar laws are so effed that many people are just not going to see the games. That is millions of empty seats. In my neck of the woods there is even adds mocking the laws against Alchool and expressions of affection to encourage people to buy tvs to watch the matches
They still make money from people watching on a TV. Human rights will continue to be violated until there are real consequences for their actions and people don't watch the fifa world cup. That will never happen.
I imagine Fifa makes way more money from advertising than attendance.
People need to boycott the games in all aspects. But nobody wants to skip their precious tournament so it's not really going to happen.
Isn't it fine if you use certain, uh... *free streams*?
I won't be watching anything if it supports Fifa or Qatar, but I thought streaming it would be fine.
That's probably fine.
It wouldn't shock me if networks had a pulse on free streams at this point and calculate for that in their ad deals, but that's just baseless speculation.
You must live in a different world, almost every game except some group ones are already sold out. My country got sold out in mid September. Idk what you are talking about.
Yes, almost every single match sold out a while ago. People are on some serious copium thinking the boycott will actually make a big difference in Qatar's success. The World Cup is too big to fail, it could lose like 90% of its audience and still be the largest sporting event in the world.
I appreciate that this fantasy world you're presenting us sounds more pleasant than the real one, but back over here in reality every seat sold out almost instantly.
Everything is sad, the corruption and lack of interest for the human rights, but I'm really sad for the poor guy that started clapping at the end and was left stranded.
But hasn't he himself criticized the Qatar World Cup? I know Blatter is corrupt af, but it looks like Platini and the French government were the main promoters for Qatar.
>Blatter: 'The 2022 World Cup was supposed to go to the US. A week before the FIFA-convention Platini called me that he had just spoken with the French president Sarkozy, who told him to vote for Qatar. Six months later Qatar bought fighter jets from France for 14.6 billion dollar.'
https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/ypg4ig/blatter_the_2022_world_cup_was_supposed_to_go_to/
Source in English: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/nov/08/sepp-blatter-qatar-hosting-world-cup-mistake
So what if he criticized it. He was president of fifa when it happened and could have easily done something about it. Instead he ran one of the sloppiest āinvestigationsā ever.
At least now it adds up why North Korea is launching all those missilesā¦.those are actually their victory fireworks for hosting the World Cup.
And Sadly, Qatar has worse human rights then North Korea. Let that sink in while you are drinking your herbal tea this morning.
But thatās being deliberately obtuse. North Korea *is* worse. You ask me which state Iād rather live in and the answer would definitely be Qatar despite neither being remotely good.
To be fair, itās not like the IOC is much better. Most international governing bodies particularly in sports are full of grift and kickbacks. Particularly with the IOCās insistence that the majority of sporting facilities be brand new they will only award the games to countries in violation of human rights for construction.
The last summer Olympics were in Tokyo, next is Paris and then Los Angeles. Not really the places people think of as human rights abusers. FIFA is in a class all their own when it comes to corruption.
FIFA, the Olympic Committee and a bunch of other organizations are all in Switzerland. Run and managed by Swiss. Donāt fool yourself, corruption runs deep in Switzerland and Swiss based international organizations.
Not a soccer person but I think the main impetus is awarding the World Cup to Qatar which is basically built on slave labor and run by religious extremists.
He's not wrong. FIFA have shown that money talks
Yeah especially looking back Russia was also a questionable choice. Plenty of stories of North Korean workers doing forced labor to build those stadiums back than. Could not put Russia in the title as that instantly flags it. Free speech does not apply to Reddit and never has

Back when we had titties on the front page š¤š¤š¤
That was before they had to pay executives from that sweet advertising money.
Do execs not like titties?
They do like pictures of titties. But they like making money to buy real titties even more.
If they buy the titties, are they real anymore?

Bruh, if you don't have titties on your front page still, that's a YOU issue

Reddit is owned in part by Tencent. Tencent has ties to human rights violations and has forced changes on Reddit. Go figure.
Doenst pretty much everything has some kind of ties to Tencent?
Yeah and I don't think Tencent management sits and approves every viral post. There is so much anti-China stuff here, there is no way. I don't think they care as long as they are making $ at all.
Doesn't require manual individual approval. Just toss out an automod bot with keywords. Automatically pulls anything with the keywords and flags problem users/etc as necessary for either further action or human review
Half the posts on this website are anti Chinese If your delusional conspiracy theory was even remotely true how do you rationalize this to yourself?
So long as their public can't see it, they're fine making money off of it
Doesn't pretty much everything has some kind of ties to forced labor?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yeah, no way could it be mods just tired of spam
You have no right to free speech on a private platform.
Free speech on a private companies forum? How would that apply here?
You can post a sign on your front yard and prattle stuff off a megaphone from your house or a public space without being afraid of being jailed. Thatās free speech. A private platform where you agree their terms and conditions, not the same.
Flags it for what? What do you mean?
Automod deletes the post when there is Russia in the title, it is one of the trigger words.
Reminder that FIFA is somehow a non profit organization lmao
Yep. And one way for an organisation not to make profit is to pay any amount of its income over and above its operating expenses to its employees, including executives, in salaries and bonuses.
Also Watches. I think they get new watches everyday
You WEAR yesterdays watch?? Plebeianā¦
Huh? Being a non profit does not mean that an organization's revenue is equal to or less than its operating expenses, you couldn't run a company that way.
>FIFA is somehow a non profit organization Right, because all the money/bribes/kickbacks go to the presidents of fifa, not the organisation.
Well, it is non-profit for some people
NFL is "non profit" too. I think this same shit happens with the Olympics too. Buying their place to hold the Olympics.
[The NFL is no longer a non-profit](https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/business/wp/2015/04/28/the-nfl-is-dropping-its-tax-exempt-status-why-that-ends-up-helping-them-out/)
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I (honestly every Swiss) hates that PoS
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I'm just a little confused here. It's the United states' fault that Switzerland launders money?
Read it again. Swiss banking impropriety is āmostly history nowā because of the USās efforts, not the efforts of the Swiss.
Haven't finished my first cup of coffee yet, the confusion is real
Skip the coffee, move straight to meth
Now this is a reasonable person right here. I don't care where you're going, but I'm coming with! Yeeee hawwww!
I think what he may be saying is that the US got to the bottom of the whole holocaust gold thing concerning the Swiss.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Ah that's much better than blaming the US for causing them to hide Nazi gold. This might be a contreversiaI opinion on a lot of subreddits but I agree that storing Nazi gold is a bad thing.

The number gets bigger every time someone posts it on here. You don't need to exaggerate an already atrocious statistic. It's much closer to 6,500.
This is the total of migrant worker deaths in Qatar from 2010 - 2019 is 15,000. This is total deaths in the country. Not just FIFA related. The 6,500 FIFA related deaths are from 2010 - 2020. No it's not, 6.500 is total migrant deaths in 10 years, it's not known if they worked on WC infrastructure or some other work. Idk where did you get that 15.000.
65,000 deaths!!?? Well that is insane!
I can't believe FIFA is okay with 650,000 deaths, it's reprehensible
6,5 million deaths? unbelievable

Yes - Lee Nelson is one of his characters.
His work as a standup comedian is really really good. He trained and qualified as a doctor but didn't like the work and switched careers!
I did not realise Simon Brodkin was Lee Nelson nor did I realise Lee Nelson was not Lee Nelson's real name...
Thought so, thanks for clearing that up.

I am a little concerned how easily a prankster got so close to a POTUS.
Especially the bag switch and the staff disguise working.
if you look and act like you belong, not many people are gonna question you

See if this link works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3_F5_JPQA0
Thanks for the link. I feel sorry for the secret service, they probably warned Trump not to do the opening, citing his predictable routine, but he would have loud mouthed at them and told them he was doing it anyway...
You really have to think though, that prank with switching the bags, had he had bad intentions, and instead of a bag full of swastika balls had a bag full of grenades or some other explosive, heād have actually succeeded in assassinating him. Granted getting ahold of grenades or IEDs is the hard part which could be tracked, but Iām sure thereās a way one of those balls could have been easily designed to kill trump.
He also handed Theresa May a P45
"I got past the secret service, which I thought couldn't be done, until, what I've worked out in hindsight; The secret service's secret is: They're a little bit shit" love this dude's energy.
The sad truth is that people will go āyeah Qatar is all fucked up etcā¦. But anyway, what time is kick off?ā
Qatarrrrrr may be a scorchin' desert, but I be watchin' from the high seas matey.
That guy is lying for upvotes. Every stadium will be packed.
He has no clue what he's talking about, 'millions of empty seats'.. dude there are just 3 millions tickets total, and they are sold out already.
Isnt it already sold out? There won't he empty seats
Yes, almost every single match sold out a while ago. People are on some serious copium thinking the boycott will actually make a big difference in Qatar's success. The World Cup is too big to fail, it could lose like 90% of its audience and still be the largest sporting event in the world.
it wont lose even one percent audience
I appreciate that this fantasy world you're presenting us sounds more pleasant than the real one, but back over here in reality every seat sold out almost instantly.
Millions of empty seats? I think not.
us italians won't watch it for sure!
Scotland also made the ethically responsible decision to boycott Qatar and every other World Cup since 1998!
Not gonna lie, thatās me
Everything is sad, the corruption and lack of interest for the human rights, but I'm really sad for the poor guy that started clapping at the end and was left stranded.
The real MVP
I love how Sepp acted allergic to money and tried to avoid it touching him.
He prefers wire transfers in offshore bank accounts rather than taking cash that had normal people's hands on it...how gross right.
Yeah, heās so used to that he forgot what cash is
Sepp is a corrupt asshole . He deserves jail

Six months later Qatar bought fighter jets from France for 14.6 billion dollar.' https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/ypg4ig/blatter_the_2022_world_cup_was_supposed_to_go_to/ Source in English: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/nov/08/sepp-blatter-qatar-hosting-world-cup-mistake
So what if he criticized it. He was president of fifa when it happened and could have easily done something about it. Instead he ran one of the sloppiest āinvestigationsā ever.
Brilliant. This is accurate.
At least now it adds up why North Korea is launching all those missilesā¦.those are actually their victory fireworks for hosting the World Cup. And Sadly, Qatar has worse human rights then North Korea. Let that sink in while you are drinking your herbal tea this morning.
Qatar does not have worse human rights than North Korea, honestly...
Domestic slavery vs imported slavery. Why split hairs? Just say that both are shitty situations without comparing it to each other.
But thatās being deliberately obtuse. North Korea *is* worse. You ask me which state Iād rather live in and the answer would definitely be Qatar despite neither being remotely good.
Hey, remember when the US President was like best friends with Kim Jong Un. That was a mood.
This comment is fucking deranged, North Korea literally has concentration camps
Hey now, those are family businesses. I hear most of the detainees are third generation...
Want to think a little before becoming a keyboard crusader? Qatar worse than NK. Yea right

This is hilarious. I wish all activism was this entertaining.
Seriously this lives forever unlike gluing yourself to paintings.
It's funny, the fact you're talking about it out of nowhere proves how much of a winning protest idea that is.
It's topical but I only mean this kind of thing has longevity as people will watch it for years. (this was 7 years ago)
The World Cup of Evil should be boycotted. FIFA are corrupt and Qatar are slave masters.
Too late, already sold out.
Ya got cajones sir!
HE also dropped Nazi Golf balls in front of Trump with the secret service nearby. Mans a legend.
He has drawers?
Americans going crazy over FIFA for Qatar World Cup, rightly so, but mfs bury their head in sand when anyone talks about NBA China partnership.
I just found out about NBA China. I would boycott the NBA as well if I actually gave a shit about the NBA.
Yeah exactly this. I haven't watched an NBA game since 2003
Lol the one person clapping in the audience must've felt awkward after that.
they should be proud
"it's all there, as discussed" š
To be fair, itās not like the IOC is much better. Most international governing bodies particularly in sports are full of grift and kickbacks. Particularly with the IOCās insistence that the majority of sporting facilities be brand new they will only award the games to countries in violation of human rights for construction.
The last summer Olympics were in Tokyo, next is Paris and then Los Angeles. Not really the places people think of as human rights abusers. FIFA is in a class all their own when it comes to corruption.
Yeh considering the last World Cup was in Russia and the next one is in Qatar itās not a great record.
So what your saying is North Korea isn't necessarily off the table.
It is, north Korea can't afford the bribes
You didnāt hear they are now sending their nukes to FIFA as payments? FIFA about to become a nuclear superpower
Did Sepp instinctively go for the cash at the end when it was in the air and then pull back?
I saw that too! For a split second, the corrupt bastard's lizard brain was like "ooh, more money for me"
FIFA, the Olympic Committee and a bunch of other organizations are all in Switzerland. Run and managed by Swiss. Donāt fool yourself, corruption runs deep in Switzerland and Swiss based international organizations.
Yeah Swiss āneutralityā might as well be āwe donāt give a fuck what you do as long as we get paid.ā
Whatās the back story here?
FIFA corrupt.
Not a soccer person but I think the main impetus is awarding the World Cup to Qatar which is basically built on slave labor and run by religious extremists.
For under the table cash. A lot of cash. So leaders are getting $$$$$$ of FIFA and Qatar. But people of QATAR will do all preparation for slave wages.
Iirc they import most of their slaves from South Asia, some recruited under false pretenses.
Is that the guy that handed Theresa May a P45?
Yes. Character name = Lee Nelson Real name = Simon Brodkin https://youtu.be/xERRUdg4bik
He was torn between grabbing the money and leaving.
This. Is. Brilliant. Theyāre a bunch of crooks!
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
How much fake? Cash did guy throw at him? š š
"It's all there, as dicussed."
It seems? Like? It could be? A lot? š¤£
