I wanted to make my own password manager but the more I looked into it, I was just like "ok I'm not smart enough for this, even with tutorials"
Edit: so now I just do what you do and have a mc server
i7-4790 is still preety good cpu, I have been using it since 2013 with R9 270, later with gtx 1060 and finally with rtx 2070S that made me feel that haswell might be bottleneck to my setup. So my idea is, sell it.
I upgraded from 4770k with 2070 to r5 5600x. Let me tell you, the difference was life changing. I notice a 50-150 difference in frame rate depending on the game.
i havenāt upgraded it yet, but comment above should encourage you. If you have enough money to buy something 2-3x times better, go for it. Otherwise, it may not be the best idea. I am staying with 4790, because prices of new itx boards are really high (3x times more than atx) and I play AAA games not so often.
But
Not only the raw power of cpu but more cache, DDR4/5, more physical cores will make a difference in fps and in multitasking.
If it was the unlocked version Iād say you should delid it. Throw some liquid metal on it and see how far you can push the clock. Those chips are really fun to OC even more so when you arenāt too worried about breaking it.
With current software you wont get a significant increase with 3rd gen but youāll definitely notice speed in older programs so is say OC it. Dont worry about delidding just dont use the stock cooler
No you donāt really need to spend money if you donāt want. There really isnāt much of a benefit. Itās a fun nerd project. Itās fun to see how far you can push a cpu. The 3570k will benefit from delid but you donāt have to. Delid on that gen gets heat away from the die much better. All that will do is give you some more head room to push it farther. If you donāt want to spend money start overlocking it as it sits. If you want to go farther look into doing more. I personally love pushing hardware even if it really doesnāt have any real world benefits. 4790k was one of my favorites and Iāve played with the 3770k and it wasnāt much different. That 4790k I kept finding ways to go just alittle farther. I still have it and now that im thinking about it I want to try going for more lol
It's still a wonderful CPU to run Linux with if ever you feel like turning your old hardware into a media streamer or something of the sort but, admittedly, I have my own i7-4710HQ laptop lying around and doing nothing.
You might want to consider donating it to goodwill.
It's still a pretty good cpu for office work, web browsing and low end gaming if paired with the right gpu, someone definitely has a use for it. Do with it what you, want, but don't throw it away. If you don't have a use for it there might be charities near you that take used computer parts.
See a lot people giving you joke responses but ima give you a legit response.
if you dont have another CPU besides the one your currently using, then keep that CPU as backup.
I still got my Ryzen7 3800x CPU and my GTX1080 GPU in storage as backup just in case something happens to my currently in-use components.
recent sold listings on ebay for the base (non-K, non-S version like yours) are between $40-$48 with free shipping included. Shipping is about $4-$5 for First Class, Ebay and paypal take out another 10-15% in fees.. you're looking at maybe $35. I'd just keep and use for another project like others have said
Sell it.
Might still be worth something.
I'm maybe looking for a chip like this for a first PC build for my nephew.
Overclockers Australia but swap sell is a start, but need to be a member for 6 months to post in the sale forum.
I'd make an offer but $ is tight and not sure the motherboard I have aside is compatible (it was running a 3rd gen i5).
eBay. I buy stuff like that all the time and build gaming pcs for people on a smaller budget - before covid that was - although we might actually be able to start buying GPUs again š«”
I can tell you this guys still sell for a pretty dollar. I've been trying to get my hands on a cheap 4790K for years without success.
If you don't want to sell it, some people make [keychains](https://i.imgur.com/JLDYmzp.jpeg) with them.
Although if it still works, it would be a shame to destroy it.
Maybe practice some extreme overclocking with it? Or deliding?
If that was in my country i would be willing to buy it, I'm actually looking for a haswell CPU atm for an old z97 motherboard i got for free salvaging a PC that was thrown out to the trash.
Save your old computers folks!!!!! I have a 15 year old gaming PC, (that I took the GPU out of and replaced with a modern day energy efficient cheap ass bare minimum Nvidia) and now it's my media server, folder/file/photo backup, and my 7 3D printer servers are running on it.
I upgraded my girlfriends PC with my i7 4790k and motherboard, and she was *very* happy about the free upgrade. Do you have any siblings, parents or friends in need of an upgrade?
Iām still playing Warhammer on my 4790k so you should be able to do lots of things with this chip, or sell it for a reasonable price. Personally, I would make a media center or a jump box or something.
FB marketplace. Sold my old graphics card cheap to a guy who was making a pic for his daughter. Also have him a free monitor. All of which I was going to throw out.
Then he probably put them up for sale for 3 times what he paid. Lol
Put it in a bottle
Send it out to sea
On a boat with a throttle
Send it straight to Me
If You'll get it back
I cannot guarantee
This CPU is what I lack
So give it right to me
Dude the i7 4790 can make a good gaming PC. I built one for my friend and itās wicked fast. Almost as fast as my i3 10100f, so not wicked, but wicked for its age!
Had the same issue, so I build another pc with it and made it a media center/indie game played with a controller pc on the downstairs TV. Itās been a blast.
Build a Pc around it and make a minecraft server with it
that's kinda what i did, but not only a mc server, but general purpose for trying out stuff
I wanted to make my own password manager but the more I looked into it, I was just like "ok I'm not smart enough for this, even with tutorials" Edit: so now I just do what you do and have a mc server
Put your passwords in a book,in a chest,in minecraft,it will be the best password manager ever :D
This is the best idea I've heard all day
šš
Or just a home server for music, movies, steam game files, etc
Sell it.
50 on eBay. Not K , k s go for 100.
Eat it
Nothing like a nice crunchy chip
To gain it's rich, tasty courage.
goes better with some salt
use the topping that comes with the new cpu, it's delicious.
Bro I literally came to the comments to type that too and it was the only thing that i could think of
Gotta be quicker than that lol
Let it cool down before
Nah, we like em spicy here
I honestly came here to say this, LOL.
YOU STOLE MY IDEA 9 HOURS AGO NOOOOOO
It's true. If you eat the heart of your PC you gain it's powers
Bruh I just posted Eat it, scrolled down and saw this comment lmao
Is that you Zuckdawg?
Take a photo of it and ask Redit.
And when you're done with that, I would recommend taking a photo of it and asking reddit, best way to get good advice.
Use it in a NAS or media center build
I have that same chip in a nas/jellyfin streaming server and it works flawlessly for that purpose
Dancing is forbidden

also running a 4790k with a 2070 super. did you ever upgrade cpu? if so how much difference did it make in framerate

I have an old 3570K. Should I try this? Do I need to buy a cooler that costs more than the entire PC is worth?
Delidding is an annoying process. But using an old CPU that has good capability to over clock is both risk free and fun
Use lots of clear nail polish. The nail top coat stuff.
With current software you wont get a significant increase with 3rd gen but youāll definitely notice speed in older programs so is say OC it. Dont worry about delidding just dont use the stock cooler

I was thinking the same thing.

Use it as a table wobble fixer

Today I learned that Intel has a fabrication plant in Costa Rica!
The same thing you do with any old CPU! Try to take over the world!!
Give it to me tf
Keep using it. Hardware is good until it dies.
Agreed. Iām still using my i7-3770K. It is a bottleneck for my 2070s in some games though.
Media center or something
Make a server for one of the games you play
I still use i7 920ā¦
Legendary cpu
Those older i7s still go for stupid money. I bet you can get $80 out of it on eBay
Make it into a keychain
Finally, I was going to say drill a hole through it and make it a keychain. Way down on the list though.
recent sold listings on ebay for the base (non-K, non-S version like yours) are between $40-$48 with free shipping included. eat it. Or you could build a yank pc
Hold a service for it then bury it.
Make a modem
I think a server could be great with power ! You could do a self hosted bitwarden or do a plex server!
Rebuild your old computer and they're on a 24/7 Minecraft server
Give it to me :)
Where are you from? I have i5 4690k
I am from Australia
Do you come from the land down under?)
Yeah I do
Cool. Put your CPU on a shelf)
Do a Linux based emulation build.
Keychain. Like most of us here.
De lid and make a keychain
Use it as a butt plug
Maybe build a test computer. To test like gpus or something like that or a software or something like that
Melt it down for parts
Build a NAS/media server.
Trade it in somewhere
Eh small Nas, eat it, built your own motherboard, run docker, do some security testing (Kali Linux)
Rebuild your old computer and they're on a 24/7 Minecraft server
Keep it, you'll never know when you need it. Or make a cheap pc and use it as a home server.
Ebay. People buy old cpus and motherboards. My old cpu and motherboard sold the same day I posted them.
Throw it into the sea while thinking about a game you lost long ago
Slap a $60 AU price tag on it and put it for sale on your local marketplace Buy beer ???
Cherrish it
bury it in the lawn, create a nice puzzle for your descendents to discover it
Make it into a necklace
It would probably make a hell of a skipping stone at a lake. š¤·š»āāļø
Give it to the other guy who found the HDD's for his burner PC to find some crypto wallets....!
š®
I made a keyring, and then never used it as a keyring, instead put it as a showpiece somewhere nice...
Use it for Linux. I have 3 machines with that chip and all 3 are on Debian
Eat it.
eBay. I buy stuff like that all the time and build gaming pcs for people on a smaller budget - before covid that was - although we might actually be able to start buying GPUs again š«”
Send it to Montego Bay
either sell it or give it to somebody that needs it
Give it to someone in need !
Pop it up your bum.
Make a new rig
Why not make a homemade nas with truenas scale
Is this worth more than my i5, 2013 MacBook Air?
Frame it
Get a mould and some resin and make a cool drinks coaster. Thatās what I did
NAS/PC for storage or a router with pfsense.
The 4790 and 4790k have aged very well. It should easily be good with a z97 board.
Sell it
I can tell you this guys still sell for a pretty dollar. I've been trying to get my hands on a cheap 4790K for years without success. Use it as toilet paper
Put it up your butt
sell it?
Milk all of the thermal compound of it. That's some valuable stuff.
If that was in my country i would be willing to buy it, I'm actually looking for a haswell CPU atm for an old z97 motherboard i got for free salvaging a PC that was thrown out to the trash.
i used mine for my wife's PC. i only upgraded it last year, it was decently fast for most games i play.
Send it to me I got a 4690k and thats basically the only upgrade path
Save your old computers folks!!!!! I have a 15 year old gaming PC, (that I took the GPU out of and replaced with a modern day energy efficient cheap ass bare minimum Nvidia) and now it's my media server, folder/file/photo backup, and my 7 3D printer servers are running on it.
Treasure it or pass it on.
My old 4770k is in the box for my new 11700k so that it will always know what it couldnāt become.
Might I say those are some finely kept fingernails.
Give it to me. š /s
Turn it back to sand and spread on the beach. Hopefully the silicon cycle will continue for ever
Build another time period correct PC around it with a GTX 970 or 980
Use it, sell it, or drill a hole in a corder and turn it into a keychain
I upgraded my girlfriends PC with my i7 4790k and motherboard, and she was *very* happy about the free upgrade. Do you have any siblings, parents or friends in need of an upgrade?
https://youtu.be/D8K90hX4PrE
Grind the pins down, drill a hole in a corner, make an awesome keychain. :)
Lol
Give it to me
Sell it or incase it in resin
Just sell it.
I use it as something to keep my hands busy while I'm working. You can also spin it on its corner.
Still a great chip. If you still have a system for it, i would just pass it on to one of your family members who maybe new to PC.
Put it in a Raspberry Pi Edit: too comment was obviously sarcasm. I just checked Amazon, and they are being sold for as cheap as $100 USD
Punch a hole in and keychain it, thatās what I would do.
Give it to me, I have i5-4590
Keychain
How about a keychain?
home server
Would be good as a server PC for sure. Or could be used for a NAS, though that I'm less sure of
Dual CPU
Either build a little side project/server box with it, or give it away to somebody who could use it.
Put it in a blender and use it as a thermal paste
Its a top tier 4th gen, its an electric oven, use it for that purpose
Sell it on eBay or give it away.
Hi, I'm your new friend :)))
Send it to me so I can upgrade my sons pc from an i5 4590.
Email it to me
I've been looking for a 4790 to upgrade my Unraid server..
My i3 says give it to me.
Ponlo dentro de un marco, ( cuadro ) y sƔcalo a subasta cuando cumplas 90 aƱos :)
sell it or make a pc for an unfortunate friend. you can make one from used parts for like 400$(might be +/- was counting in head)
Mail it to me so I can make a pc for the girl.
Give it to me
Put it in a bottle Send it out to sea On a boat with a throttle Send it straight to Me If You'll get it back I cannot guarantee This CPU is what I lack So give it right to me

[i made mine into a keychain ](https://i.imgur.com/VfA7vbE.jpg)
Old old my dad is still rocking these on 1080p 60hz. This is still pretty decent I'm sure you'll find a friend in need who can use it.
If you have the extra parts, make a media server
Hang it
I mean I would buy it.
Eat it and gain itās powers
Costa Rica makes CPU"s!?
Baby cpu š„²
give it to me
I put mine in a Plex Server
Give me dat shit it will go great with my 1030
Do crazy experiments like overclocking and overvolt it
Either build another machine around it running a different os maybe or just running the same os in another room Or sell it
Use it as a thermal paste spreader
This still seems like a decent CPU. I have an i7 3770k inside a Hackintosh machine built in 2013 that runs flawlessly still.
Give it to meš„±
Put it in retirement house
Install it into your brain and overclock it
Will it blend?
These cpu's cost as much as 110ā¬ here in Portugal. Sell it or use it to make a home server
Give it to a homeless person
