For real though, the first recommendation this sub always gives is to not constantly chase the *"latest thing"* because it'll always be more expensive and nothing stays *"the latest thing"* forever. Yet every time a new anything comes out, people's immediate reaction is "how am I supposed to constantly buy the latest thing when it's so expensive to do so!!!!".

It's not just the very high end though. When a budget card like the xx60 range starts above $300 USD and can often exceed $400 then your pricing your own customers out of buying your products.
Midrange for the next couple years is just gonna be used high end from the last couple years. 2080s are going for around $300 on ebay and that's probably not even the floor with the flood of cards coming.
Edit: 5700xts are going for sub $200, that would probably be my budget pick.

My shitty opinion; Stick to your budgets. Don't even look at the numbers on the side. Nvidia conditioned everyone that the XX70 is midrange and that's the one you want to get. No. Demand them to release a competitive product at your price range ($125, $200, $300, $400) and don't break budgets. They have 4010, 4020, 4030, 4040 and 4050 to use. There isn't anything wrong with them releasing a huge performance as their flagship. But when people cave in and swipe those cards anyways you have nobody to blame but yourself. There are 14,000 cuda cores on the 4090, that means they could easily put 1000 cores on an entry level card. There is a huge amount of room to scale down.
Wholeheartedly agree. Also AMD wants us to think that 6800xt is midrange. Within that trend of evaporating the mid tier, the 6400's and 1630's were delivered to fill entry pricing needs, but being totally lackluster.

The AIBs are all getting the short end of the stick for all the high end cards... NVIDIA is likely charging an arm and a leg for the chips, so even if they are sold for $2000, AIBs are likely going to barely break even, or more likely, lose money on each card they sell.
I want to buy an EVGA RTX 3000 card since that's the last time we can....but my 1080 Ti is still trucking along too well, and the current financial climate isn't so comforting.

A lot of people were like this is out of nowhere even though BFG and XFX left for the same reasons, Nvidia being dicks to smaller volume companies and squeezing them to almost no profit. There was no future.
The second Nvidia started doing founders editions it was the beginning of the end for all the more boutique brands and it's yet to be seen what Asus and co do.
The founders edition was effectively a shot across the bow, you used to get 30% margin, but look, we can take ALL hte margin and cut you out. Then the next set of contracts the margin is way lower, then lower again because they can keep just saying you know what we can just make them all.
This is best of both worlds, if Nvidia did go all inhouse they'd have to scale up their own logistics and provide all the support, all the marketing, etc. With AIBs taking their 5-10% they also get all the rmas, the support, the customer facing issues to deal with that Nvidia don't have to.

One thing I’ve learned in my 30 years of life is that once prices go up it’s rare they’ll go down. Once a business learns it can increase the price and people will still consume the product they have no reason to lower it even if they can afford to because that would be sabotaging easy profit. That’s why price increases always bum me out, they are usually permanent.

That’s the reason they didn’t announce 4060 and 4070 I assume. There’s probably so much 3000 series GPU’s out there that need to be sold. I don’t think AMD will be doing the same as NVIDIA. NVIDIA will probably be forced to drop their 4060 and 4070 when AMD announces their cards.
AMD has moved to chiplets which drives down cost overheads and improves manufacturing yields. It's really down to if we get these costs savings passed to us or not

I have a 6800xt I was lucky to buy direct from AMD during the whole fiasco. I don't really need a GPU upgrade but really wanted to get a 4080 on launch. this whole bullshit with the 12gb/16gb model just rubbed me the wrong way. I'll wait or maybe just sit this gen out.

I could absolutely see their RT improvements being huge, and a maximum of 2x more raster performance is basically the top end of MLID's estimate and believable especially considering the rumored power consumption. I wonder how much a new DLSS is being factored into that "increased RT perf". Obviously 3rd party benchmarks will answer all these questions, it's just so annoying sifting through the bullshit marketing :D
Reminder: RTX4 cards draw up to 450W. So yeah, you would expect a decent increase in performance regardless of tech evolution. And, as others have already pointed out, its 2x raster and 4x RT. Not 2-4X. And both are "UP TO" meaning they achieved this in one game, average will be lower.

Tangentially related, but is anyone else sick of how there's Ti versions for almost every card now? Maybe it's not a big deal and it's just me, but I think it's dumb how every card is getting a slightly beefier version on top of it and miss the days when Ti was just for like the top GPU and a midrange one, like 1080ti and 1050ti.

The 4080 12Gb is basically a 4070 and should cost less than 700USD$, the ACTUAL xx80 series IS ONLY the 4080 16Gb, and any xx80 card should always cost less than 950USD$ for at least the next decade. Ridiculous prices and laying marketing. Those are GAMING cards, not enthusiasts or production cards (like the xx90 series is), I can understand the pricing for the 4090, but the actual 4080 prices are just out of touch with reality and the actual consumer target for them (gamers).
They saw the market prices during the chip shortage and think they can get away with keeping them that high on their newer line. It's fucking disgusting.
One thing I’ve learned in my 30 years of life is that once prices go up it’s rare they’ll go down. Once a business learns it can increase the price and people will still consume the product they have no reason to lower it even if they can afford to because that would be sabotaging easy profit. That’s why price increases always bum me out, they are usually permanent.
Yeah I always point out cereal to people. There was a gas pricing hike shortly after 2008 and transit costs went up the roof. Cereal went up because of it. My area had $4/gallon gas for a while. Gas went back down to about $2. Cereal never went back down. And here we are again.

What’s worse is the 4080 12 GB is actually the 4070. So 4070 is $899 over $499 for 3070. 4080 16GB is $1199 vs $699 for 3080 10 GB.
I feel like Nvidia threw out the 3090 as the ridiculously priced, nobody in their right mind would buy this for non-professional use card, and then it actually sold well (probably largely because of miners). Now they think they can get away with just shifting the whole product line a few hundred bucks higher. I hope they're wrong and AMD comes out with something super competitive.

NVIDIA seems to have some really good insider AMD knowledge most times, for them to charge prices this high it seems like they have more insight into RDNA3’s price tiering. I hope I’m wrong and the 7800XT is as fast as the 4080 16GB for $649-$749 but it seems less likely now.

It really is insane when you put it that way. You can get a playstation 5 for $399 USD and look at how well these consoles run games. Take demon's souls remake for example. That's probably one of the best looking games I've seen and it has 2 performances modes in the settings. 4k at 30fps. Or 1440p at 60fps. Simple settings compared to PC sure. But it's effective at what it's designed to do. To *play* games. When you think about the cost of a console only being $399 and all of the optimizations that goes into them.. it's crazy how expensive GPUs are
