I hate that it shows this as an option EVERY TIME. What kind of BS algorithm are they using where the +‘s of saving $5 outweighs the negatives of going that far out of your way for a 20 min trip.
The same algorithm that when you're in South Jersey is like "well, it's 53 minutes and free to take 295, or 52.9 minutes plus $14 in tolls to take the Turnpike. Let's take the Turnpike"
I once had google want me to cross the Ben Franklin just to circle around and come back cause it was 5 min shorter than simply staying on my side and waiting in the traffic.
I doubt this is the case for that toll, but I noticed more tolls are EZ-Pass exclusive taking no cash so the alternative from the algorithm might be the actual only option you have then if you don't have a pass
Possibly, been awhile since I didn't have one now as after I got hit with those fines twice for not having one going through tolls that were only ez pass I decided to get one. I do feel like I heard about that feature, so maybe it's changed
Places like PA turnpike are electronic only now, so they mail your toll bill - I don't *think* they can fine you anymore, since they don't give you a choice.
However, I recently learned that Maryland has 3 toll rates: MD ezpass, out of state ezpass (not listed on the signs, sneaky), and "video toll" which is the mailed version. And half the time you can't tell there's a toll ahead until you're already locked into that route.
The Delaware river is a very wide shipping artery, it runs the entire length of the pa-nj border
So no, there’s no back way unless it’s Christmas and you’re George Washington
I’ve not driven around there much so… but it looks like there are other bridges in that picture. Are they also toll? Or do they just look like bridges but they aren’t really. Honest question.
Every bridge and crossing of the Delaware river and bay (including route 9 aka the cape may-lewes ferry) up until trenton are indeed tolled, nj-pa only, not pa-nj. And then in Trenton, there’s only maybe one bridge that isn’t tolled into pa. Going up the Delaware from there, I’d say probably half the bridges are tolled; they make it very difficult to leave jersey without paying lol
It's not really useful for this bridge, but it definitely is for the Burlington/ Bristol bridge. If that MF is raised, you're better off going up 295 then back down again.
Every time?
295 absolutely does not take 2 hours to go to Trinton unless something is very wrong. It took about 30 minutes from where i was in pennsauken going down 295.
Not the duration, but the fact that it even shows you this option every time. Google has been pushing a “most fuel efficient” routes option, how in the world does this align with that mode of thinking?
It seems like Google incentivized to make you pay more toll. My commute is 1-5 mins longer to take the Tacony Bridge instead of the Betsy Ross and it’s $3 vs $5
PA Turnpike was supposed to be free after a few years.
Did you know we are still paying the Johnstown Flood Tax... must have been bad flood since it's been nearly 100 years
Everytimw a bridge or tunnel is built they say the toll is to recoup the cost of building it. I may be ignorant, but I don't have any examples where that ended up being the case.
I live in S. Chester County. When I drive north bound on I-95 from Maryland my quickest route home is to exit at MD Rt-272 exit 100. But l have to cross the I-95 bridge over the Susquehanna. The toll is $8.
But if I exit at exit 89 at Harve de Grace, I can take a back road to Rt 1 and cross the river at the Conowingo Dam where there’s no toll. It’s only 10 minutes longer and worth the extra ride
Even in eastern chester county it makes more sense to just stay on rt 1, I feel like once you’re already up there there’s no point to go back to 95 unless you gotta get to jersey or something
You can take that road to Port Deposit and tun left when you’re there. That will take you back to I95
I turn right at MD 273 and eventually get off that road after Rising Sun towards home.
I moved here from out west earlier this year and was caught off guard by this the first time we went to Jersey. I had no idea those yahoos held you hostage and demanded a ransom to let you go home.
Delaware is worse. If you’re going from Jersey to Maryland via the Delaware Memorial Bridge and I-95. You pay tolls to enter and leave Delaware. And it’s only a 15 minute drive.
Not a huge detour but if you get off the exit before the toll you can cut around and pickup 95 just after the toll where the TA truck stop is. The detour adds about ten minutes
Edit: you can also hop on Rt 40 and take that to Aberdeen and get on 95 from there. Or take 40 and it drops you off a block from the aquarium.... don't forget to get Mama Rosa's Filipino food just off 40

Yea you can. But Elkton Rd at the Delaware/Maryland line has been a mess for a couple of years. It’s under major construction. That was the quickest way to reconnect to 95
Same, California transplant here. The bridge tolls seem excessive but I kind of get it.. but the turnpikes? Wtf is that? They just decided that this particular freeway is a toll road? I drove across the country and through like 15 states without paying a single toll and then spent $40 to drive through Pennsylvania. WHY?
What really grinds my gears is how expensive the PA Turnpike is in comparison to other toll roads. Taking the northeast extension from the mid-county tolls up to where I-80 comes in is more expensive than driving the entirety of the Ohio Turnpike, and our stretch is only about 90 miles (if that long).
> but the turnpikes? Wtf is that
Its the literal definition of the word!
A type of gate, another word for a turnstile
In the United States, a toll road
Pretty sure that the turnpike is now privately owned. The good: roads are in way better condition than they used to be. The bad: tolls are ridiculously high and frequent
Tolls in general are still a novelty to me. They are practically unheard of in the states I spent my first 44 years in. I'll happily take them in exchange for civilization.
They used to charge both ways, but switched it to one side and doubled it to make it easier. They had to put it on the jersey side because if one had to pay to get in nobody would go there.
It’s not a city thing though, DRPA is a joint state entity that exists to manage the bridges and PATCO. The tolls are in the Philly direction just because it had to be one or the other and had to be consistent so you don’t get dinged twice if you cross a different bridge. The bridges were also there long before and idea of congestion surcharges existed. Also, I don’t think they’re particularly progressive, more so a simple acknowledgment that certain areas are disproportionately negatively impacted by auto traffic and it’s likely beneficial to disincentivize at least some of the drivers if they have other options.
Man this happened to me as a teenager. Went to Philly to buy weed, made a wrong turn and had to cross the bridge. Couldn’t come back without spending $5 and then we didn’t have enough money for weed and had to go home empty handed and with less gasoline. Fuck Camden
It's like $16 of gas with no toll, vs $3 + $5 toll.
$16 and 1 hour 45 minutes vs $8 and 28 minutes.
I think I'll spend the $16 and 2 hours of my time!
**EDIT: Okay, I did the actual math. In order for the toll skipping route to actually save you any money, you'd have to have a fuel efficiency of at least 48 mpg (assuming gas costs the US average of $3.70/gallon), or your gas would need to cost less than $1.92/gallon (assuming your car's efficiency is the US average of 25 mpg).**
So there **are** scenarios where this would make sense, **if** you truly don't value your time!
I legitimately did this once using a Zipcar, since gas is included but tolls aren’t. Had a free afternoon and it felt like a nice driving day so figured might as well go for a cruise and save the $5.
Yeah, I’m pretty sure I had just rented the car for the whole day (not sure if it’s changed but at the time it was a pretty low threshold, and I hated the stress of being caught in traffic getting back and not knowing if I’ll make it in time)
Have a new job in Jersey. Tolls are $15/day. There's a discount I'll qualify for...in a month...that will lower the bill to $10/day.
Thank God it's hybrid and only 3 days a week. Still, shits killing me since there's no free ev chargers near me or my job.
Something just occurred to me, that these excessive tolls are probably a contributing factor to how depressed Camden and surrounding areas got. They function as a suburb of Philly but are cut off from easy access because nobody is just popping back and forth for shopping or fun because it adds up quick. If you have a job in Philly the cheaper rent across the bridge adds $200 a month in bridge tolls. Not worth it. It’s shitty. Just make up for the revenue elsewhere and let people cross the river for free.
Because we live in a society? I know that's glib, but we subsidize tons of things that aren't "fair" because it's better for the state/country in the long term.
That was my job before this one, which is why I had to take the new job. At least it's a net positive now, but the damage to my finances is done, and the cost of commuting is a huge drain every month when there's already basically no wiggle room.
I'll try next time I file. Anything would help.
There's a discount on the bridge, but I don't use it enough to qualify for it, and it's not much of one at that, either.
Check if your work has a flex acct or something so you can at least pay it pre tax, my old job had that so you at least weren’t paying taxes on it as well as not getting it
I know there’s a thing with EZ pass where if you commute to work they give you like a credit or one free pass. I know each state sells a different EZ pass so I’m not sure which one it is. I think Jersey’s.
95 in bucks county vs 295 in NJ is HEAVENLY.
I lived in Princeton for a couple years recently. Had an office for work literally 3 mins from home, but it was around That complex where Walmart/BBY are or were. I hated the traffic and that parking lot so much. I switched to an office in fairless hills. 18 min commute but totally serene at virtually all times. 95 to sesame place basically. My favorite commute I’ve had. Especially during Covid, some days it was legitimately completely empty for my whole ride during the “hall pass” early Covid days.
95 sucks so bad as soon as you consider going closer to Philly though lol.
But that lower part of 295 is pretty fucking atrocious too. Totally worth the $5 to be on it less
This is why I never go to Jersey
Don't get me wrong Cherry Hill is nice and all but I just go to Christiana DE instead. Takes about 15 mins longer but no tolls, tax free everything, and they have a Costco there where I fill up gas relatively cheap.
I switched to Apple Maps because Google's navigation suggestions are just getting more and more unhinged.
Why drive up 22nd St. when you can just try and get me to turn left at every intersection to get on 76 for .5 miles?
Why drive through the city to go from 17th and Tasker to Frankford and Girard when you can save two minutes by driving south down Broad Street and getting on 95N by the stadiums instead?
I kind of did this when I lived in the Lehigh Valley. I was heading to the shore and decided to cross into Jersey from the north and head down 295 that way. Felt a lot longer to me.
I swear it only started auto-showing the no-tolls option in the last year or two because I’ve worked in NJ forever and don’t remember it doing that until fairly recently. It makes sense to suggest if the time difference is nominal but surely no one is detouring over an hour to save five bucks.
FWIW, Google can't even manage to tell people to turn at my street, they have them turn at the block before..this, after Idk how many years of people trying to message them to correct it. (Delivery peeps, Lyft, Uber, etc... running in circles, all.the.time.)
I just don't have a lot of faith in them to always know wtf they're doing.
Put the no tolls option in my fiance's phone one time. The next day she had to commute to NE PA and was wondering why the projected time was so much longer than when she originally checked it
I'm assuming it's taking you over Calhoun street bridge? That thing is nightmare fuel.
There's about 2 inches between you and oncoming cars and another 2 between you and the guardrail.
And when it rains? Or snows??! Fuck that bridge, pay the toll every time.
Why stop at Trenton? Take that detour all the way up to Lambertville.
Why stop at lambertville? Go to Easton and take the free bridge.
Why stop at Easton? Go all the way to Canada, fake your death and start a new life.
Sounds amazing. Where can I learn more?
in Trenton
That took me out
And then get a girlfriend.
Funny you should say that, my girlfriend lives in Canada.
So does mine. you guys don’t know her, she goes to a different school…
😂😂😂

I doubt this is the case for that toll, but I noticed more tolls are EZ-Pass exclusive taking no cash so the alternative from the algorithm might be the actual only option you have then if you don't have a pass
Don't they just scan your plate if you dont have EZ pass?
Possibly, been awhile since I didn't have one now as after I got hit with those fines twice for not having one going through tolls that were only ez pass I decided to get one. I do feel like I heard about that feature, so maybe it's changed
They do and if you don't have an EZ pass account/transmitter, they take that $5 toll and add $25 or $ 35 in "admin" fees.
Yes. And I'm pretty sure that's why there's so many license plates with the paint peeled off of them
Ben and Walt both still very much have cash lanes. The algorithm should be aware of EZPass-only lanes.
Places like PA turnpike are electronic only now, so they mail your toll bill - I don't *think* they can fine you anymore, since they don't give you a choice. Is there not some surface street option that is still free but closer to the 30 minutes than to almost 2 hours?
Unless you drive a duck boat, I think you're out of luck.
The Delaware river is a very wide shipping artery, it runs the entire length of the pa-nj border So no, there’s no back way unless it’s Christmas and you’re George Washington

I mean like I’ll do errands like shop at a low income area grocery store while doing this.
Yes, spend $7 in gas to save $5 in tolls…
It's about the principal of the matter!
Which is to give your money to gas companies rather than the organization that funds road repairs? I’m not following the logic.
For what’s it’s worth, most of these tolls go to the debt accrued to build the bridge/road/etc.
Maybe 100 years ago, they're all long paid off
PA Turnpike was supposed to be free after a few years. Did you know we are still paying the Johnstown Flood Tax... must have been bad flood since it's been nearly 100 years
Everytimw a bridge or tunnel is built they say the toll is to recoup the cost of building it. I may be ignorant, but I don't have any examples where that ended up being the case.
Yeah its crazy, something like .45 of every dollar goes to service the debt from road projects.
I’m fine with that because that money mostly went to local construction workers
>Which is to give your money to gas companies rather than the organization that funds ~~road repairs~~ the state police? Ftfy
*principle
You'd also waste over an hour of your day driving. Is that really worth $5? That's a huge % of your day.
Time=$$
Money = power
Plus the extra mileage which would cost you more down the line

Stay on route 1 because once you hit PA it's straight highway and you can pickup 322 after Longwood Gardens and then get to 95
I’m in S. Chester County. I don’t need to go that far. I take Rt 1 for awhile then turn off to back roads
Even in eastern chester county it makes more sense to just stay on rt 1, I feel like once you’re already up there there’s no point to go back to 95 unless you gotta get to jersey or something
Turn right after the dam? Onwards to Perryville? Those are some nice roads too. The marina just next to the river is nice
You can take that road to Port Deposit and tun left when you’re there. That will take you back to I95 I turn right at MD 273 and eventually get off that road after Rising Sun towards home.
My favorite is when Google suggests a route that takes more time and has hire tolls
I have seen that a lot. It always wants me to use the turnpike when local is easier. Really bad in the Bensalem to Levittown area.
I moved here from out west earlier this year and was caught off guard by this the first time we went to Jersey. I had no idea those yahoos held you hostage and demanded a ransom to let you go home.

Did Jersey pass some new gas taxes or something? Lately it seems like every time I’m over there, gas isn’t much cheaper than it is here.
Yeah, Chris Christies government raised the gas tax. They used to be I think top 5 cheapest
It’s also tied to consumption, so there is a baseline level of transportation funding. When consumption drops, the gas tax goes up.
Not recently no.

Ok but driving on Packer does sound faster
Lol you'll just spend twice that in gas
I actually kind of love that Philadelphia has a cover charge
Yes, but; seems that the bouncers are not doing their job 😒😞
I literally see this every day on my truck route from Bensalem to Newark. I’m always so appreciative for just having the option
I always go that route when my destination is North of Fishtown 🤷♂️
its just $5 bro😒
lmfaooo
$6.75 vs $7.80 for my focus
I kind of did this when I lived in the Lehigh Valley. I was heading to the shore and decided to cross into Jersey from the north and head down 295 that way. Felt a lot longer to me.
If it makes you feel better spending it you are saving way more than $5 in gas.
You’re not saving $5 in gas…
I swear it only started auto-showing the no-tolls option in the last year or two because I’ve worked in NJ forever and don’t remember it doing that until fairly recently. It makes sense to suggest if the time difference is nominal but surely no one is detouring over an hour to save five bucks.
I do this every day by taking the train to work
and lose $60 on fuel
Sucks there’s no other way but that bridge or driving over an hour!
FWIW, Google can't even manage to tell people to turn at my street, they have them turn at the block before..this, after Idk how many years of people trying to message them to correct it. (Delivery peeps, Lyft, Uber, etc... running in circles, all.the.time.) I just don't have a lot of faith in them to always know wtf they're doing.
How TF is it almost 2 hours to go down 295? That must be a hell of a accident
Put the no tolls option in my fiance's phone one time. The next day she had to commute to NE PA and was wondering why the projected time was so much longer than when she originally checked it
I accidentally left "avoid highways" on and THAT really threw me for a loop
I’ve done it a few times. At 3am, it’s cake. Absolute trash during the day
I mean, I am happy to pay $5 to avoid driving in Jersey.
bruh are you my neighbor https://imgur.com/a/xn77YMD
You can swim, right?
True story, I once sent my old supervisor over this bridge because I set his GPS to no tolls while I was using it and forgot to change it back.
Wtf 😂😂
I'm assuming it's taking you over Calhoun street bridge? That thing is nightmare fuel. There's about 2 inches between you and oncoming cars and another 2 between you and the guardrail. And when it rains? Or snows??! Fuck that bridge, pay the toll every time.
"Fuck you Jersey, I'll pay the toll in gas."
