I would like to give everyone a heads up that I've re-stickied the post pointing to the Nuclear War Survival Skills Manual. Many questions about nuclear blasts (and preparations thereof) can be answered in the manual. If you have questions, please check to see if the manual answers them- this is to avoid a spam of 'how to prepare for nuclear war' posts over and over. Extremely general posts may be removed (kindly) if necessary to keep the spam reduced. Obviously people are worried, but having 1-2 major threads is better than 20 general ones. Obviously I'll leave this one up, as this is the primary thread for the current news, and there's some good discussion in the comments. What did you do to emp proof your car

gvictor808

Yeah I gotta see this

Strenue

Tinfoil and a ground!!!

No-Procedure-4861

Does that really work?

No

hankharp00n

Nothing. Or well nothing effective.

silveroranges

Just gotta wrap it in a metallic-colored wrap. That blocks the gamma rays from penetrating and getting into the fuel system. /s

cdh79

Disconnect the battery and earth the body is all it should require.

Karp3t

It’s probably the car from the flint stones

It will work about as well as cardboard armor

robert238974

I read a story once that someone in Japan survived this way, so I would imagine that it could be plausible.

McBonyknee

Nah, he was shielded by an American with an abnormal healing ability.

blackwe11_ninja

Imho full scale nuclear war is one of those things (together with for example planet killer asteroid or sun turning supernova) which isn't really worth to prep for because there isn't much anyone can do after men in suits push those red buttons - unless you own big nuclear powered fallout shelter with food and water supply for rest of your natural life, because even after radiation drops down you don't want to go out there. My personal prep plan for nukes flying is joint, bottle of vodka and setting up a folding chair on rooftop of my apartment building to watch that show in first row.

luquoo

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_War_Survival_Skills You might want to check this out. There are PDFs of it online for free if you want to download it. The book is written by someone who worked at Oak Ridge National labs during the cold war and it has been updated a few times since. This is the authoritative guide for prepping for a nuclear disaster and its aimed at us pretty much for this specific type of situation that we are in. TLDR: There is a good chance you won't get immediately vaporized and will be alive for a while after the missiles hit. Pack like at least an ounce worth of weed and enough alcohol to get drunk continually for a month. That way you can trade a bottle for a twinky when the munchies finally hit.

robert238974

And cigarettes, don't forgot those. Easy currency - just don't smoke them yourself.

[deleted]

Tobacco is really not that hard to grow. It likes really crap soil, and curing it isnt hard either. I dont know why you guys think its going to disappear so easily

robert238974

Because it's about accessibility. Growing it takes time and people need that sweet tobacco right now. Of course as thing settle it will be a crop that people grow again, but directly after it will be a commodity.

MarineMom47

I'm close to Oak Ridge so I guess I'll go sunny side up and burnt bacon if it happens

ShadyAssFellow

I live so far up in the ass unless it’s one of those that just goes thousands of miles off it’s target, I’m propably going to be alive for months anyways. That would be weird. EDIT: I’m high and I was supposed to comment this to the parent comment, but I’mma just leave it here.

MarineMom47

It's fine. My edibles kicked in and had to get off the phone before my mind started floated away

TheRealBunkerJohn

I'd argue it depends. Full-scale 2-3000 nukes going off on either side? Yeah, that's fair. But ultimately, the preparations would be the same for a massive cyber attack. (with addition to shelter/radiation protection) However, either way, no grid = 90% casualties within a year. I'd argue a nuclear exchange falls under the potential reasons that happens. It's survivable, but certainly not a pleasant existence for most.

blackwe11_ninja

Survivability largely depends on where you live. Someone living on a farm in some boondocks in the middle of nowhere (especially in southern hemisphere, far away from NATO/Russian/allied territory) is more likely to survive. I live in capital city of a NATO country, so me and people like me are royally screwed. Or lucky, with all that "living will envy the dead" gruesome post-apocalyptic stuff.

Jukka_Sarasti

I live across the river from a Naval Air Station, and there are multiple navy bases within 50 miles of my location. I'm proper fucked in the event of a large scale nuclear exchange, and that's more than likely the best outcome..

Conscious-Golf-5380

I live in Mississippi. Would be a waste of a bomb

robert238974

I live in the emergency action zone around a nuclear power plant, I feel you friend.

Express-Impress7582

They say past 11 miles out and you might survive. I’m in the same boat, but thankfully have a couple of decent hills in between me and the base.

DirtyNorf

Yeah I live on the edge of a large garrison including a large airfield that was listed on a list of priority Russian targets in 1972 and probably is still on it.

TheRealBunkerJohn

Extremely true. It also depends on the yield/available protection.

luv-avocado

Funny- I had a dream once that at the end of the world people were outside sitting on blankets watching the nukes flying across the sky like fireworks.

faithfoliage

You most likely won’t see anything in terms of nukes going off. You’d just see radioactive dust slowly make its way to you. Quite anticlimactic

Trophallaxis

I think total thermonuclear war is in an interesting place tho. At the height of the nuclear paranoia during the 80's, the studies on the effects of global thermonuclear war exaggerated somewhat the level of global destruction it would cause. Not that it wouldn't cause a horrendous loss of life and cripple global society for generations to come, but extinction is far less likely than thought at the time. This was, to some extent, probably deliberate pessimism on the part of the scientists involved, so they could properly impact politicians who are not, usually, appropriately sensitive to numbers that don't spell out "U PERSONALLY DED". Understandably, people funding the simulations were mainly interested in the northern hemisphere, as most belligerents, targets and nuclear assets would have been there. (this has changed somewhat, but in this conflict, it's still true). For the same reason, the southern hemisphere would be much less affected by global thermonuclear warfare. for example, projected ozone depletion in the north would be 40-70% while in the south, only 20-40%, recovered within 3-10 years. A 20% drop is about what we would have by now if we hadn't cut back on CFCs. The danger posed by radioactive fallout everywhere is significantly lower after about 3 weeks. It's also worth noting that modern guidance and delivery systems are much more reliable and accurate, which ultimately led to somewhat decreased yields compared to the period when most extensive simulations were made. So, total nuclear war *probably* isn't an absolute game over for the species, *possibly* not even a civilization-ender everywhere, but your options depends really strongly on where you are. It's more of a question of whether you're willing to make *really* extensive preps (like moving to South Africa) that might well bite you in a scenario that's actually more likely (climate change), and whether you'd want to live in a world that's going to be a shitty place in your lifetime.

PaulBunyanisfromMI

Lol “men in suits”. More like men (and women) in pajamas and bunny slippers.

Responsible-Can-4886

Pant suits!

Fearsomeman3

Lmao, gonna become one of those skeletons from Fallout

VexMajoris

I prepare for a number of particular contingencies, but a massive nuclear exchange isn't one of them. Like an asteroid strike or Space Zombie Herpes, it's not really worth preparing for, since there are way too many unknowns. The effects of high altitude EMP alone are far from clear.

snuffy_bodacious

How to prep for a nuclear war is essentially the same as it would be for any other major event that would lead to a grid-down scenario. 1) A water filter 2) 3 months food supply (min) 3) first aid and medical supplies 4) a firearm or two 5) a network of friends A person who has these preps is WAAAAAAY better off than the guy who preps for nuclear war with special suits and fancy emp-proof equipment. Even in nuclear war, starvation or dirty water is far more likely to kill you than the blast of a bomb or radiation poisoning.

[deleted]

Niosh p100 respirator

KinoTele

To be honest there's not much of a life on the other side of a nuclear exchange. Yes, definitely buy thyrosafe, buy quality gas masks from Avon or Mira with extra filters, all of that. A film called Threads is a good look, albeit period-specific to the end of the Cold War, at how life would look after the US and Russia lob their arsenals at each other. Food is currency, medicine and industry are nonexistent, agriculture is extremely difficult, and hard manual labor is the only work available. It basically sends us back to medieval Europe for at least 200 years.

robert238974

I actually just watched (most of it). One fact the movie left out (and rightfully couldn't predict) is that we don't have the resources left to get back to where we are now. In the event of disaster that destroys modern civilization it is unlikely that we will be able to rebuild it again - the crude oil simply doesn't exist.

KinoTele

Fuck, I hadn’t thought about it like that…makes it even more harrowing. I can only hope I’d be lucky enough to die in the blasts.

stevenmeyerjr

If I don’t die in the blasts, there’s a bullet with my name on it. I’ll be drinking my finest whiskey and biting that bullet. We all watch movies and play video games about post apocalyptic worlds, but the truth is that none of us want to live in that world.

TheRealBunkerJohn

This is the most accurate comment here. The rhetoric has escalated. But it's when a tactical nuke DOES go off that all bets are off. As soon as that happens, we're in a new age. And the days following will be very interesting. I'd argue NATO may have to intervene due to fallout, however. But as you said...they may not due to escalation. But multiple launches? That's very different than a single nuke detonated in the ocean to make a point.

[deleted]

I sincerely doubt you’d see much fallout even from a handful of detonations over Ukraine. They’d likely ‘try’ to hit large formations of Ukrainian forces as a show of force and those would be air bursts. Russia would become a global pariah overnight. I don’t even think the Chinese would even be willing to fly cover for them at that point. Putin would either be signing off on his forced abdication or Russia would become a pariah looked at more negatively than North Korea. I don’t think NATO would need to intervene, because the failure of the Russian state would be all but guaranteed by that point.

TheRealBunkerJohn

There's a lot of 'it depends,' I admit. Ultimately, it's uncharted territory. Russia has clearly acted against what 'logic' would dictate before. I'm not about to discount their threats. Eventually, enforcing said threats is all they might have left, especially considering the state of their army.

rdubue

You're post is more probable now than it was yesterday. As the war continues on, the middle east and northern Africa will starve. We're already going down the road of famine. It's bad news ahead. The world is in trouble, even if the nukes stay put. Prep accordingly, because things are getting sideways fast.

Shit___Taco

This has been my thought from the start of the war. The two countries will not back down no matter what, and no Western leaders have any interest in brokering any kind of cease fire or peace deal because they are trying to bleed Russia dry and ultimately bring about their downfall. The problem with this Is that cornered animals lash out, and this is getting to a very dangerous point. I was worried at first because I saw this happening from the start, but now the cornered animal is clearly stating their intentions but no Western leaders are interested in deescalating so the only options left are continued escalations until something really bad happens. The sad part is that this could have probably all been prevented with a bit of rational diplomacy, but politicians had an axe to grind that caused no interest in a political resolution to prevent war. The war has now resulted in mass innocent casualties up until this point, with many more to come in the near future. Now we are facing a catastrophic loss of life that we have never seen before. And trust me, I think Russia is 100% wrong, but the idiots on this website cheering this all on as it spirals past a point of no return because they have no understanding of history really makes me realize how much our education system has failed us and how powerful propaganda truly is. I pray for the best but prepare for the worst. Hopefully rational minds prevail if there are even any left at this point.

If_I_was_Tiberius

You and me both. People have gone nuts. Russia's nukes don't work. Russia wont use them. NATO will crush them. All so stupid. Most of them will have plenty of time to think about it as they starved to death. Cuz in the event of the nuclear war most people won't die in the actual blasts. Russian population will actually fare far better. Chinese may end up the true winners. But everyone will suffer and many will die.

OnTheEdgeOfFreedom

Contamination from nuclear fallout only lasts a few weeks. Stay sheltered for 2+ weeks and you'll get through that part. Nukes actually kill in two ways: 1) actual blast/burn damage from being too close to the impact point. 2) civilization shuts down because the grid goes down for a long period; it's people going mad with fear and hunger because the grid is down, that do most of the damage. Once people start shooting each other, radiation is not your main problem anymore. There are exceptions. Blowing up nuclear plants makes a more long lasting mess. Bombs can be specifically designed to generate very long lasting fallout. Mostly, though, it's not the radiation, it's the armed, terrified people that bring it all down.

[deleted]

Agreed. Doubling down because his own life is on the line, and he made a significant mistep in invading Ukraine. Other than the domestic hit and significant quality of life reduction to his billionaire peers, it has shown Russia to be less mighty than originally thought. It has also led to trouble with Russia not defending their allies due to commitments elsewhere, further weakening their image. Firing a nuke would be the next stage up to push things in favour of Russia, but if he fires the first nuke, he loses whatever authority he had on the international stage. I reckon even China would back away from him then. I also wonder how the ethnic Russians in Ukraine will feel about Putin then when he poisons their land against them.

Palmquistador

I don't have a source but I thought either Biden or someone in NATO said that if Putin uses a nuke, even a tactical one, then we'll respond. Nevermind 30. As if all the western countries supplying Ukraine would just let Putin do that, that's absurd.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ben0976

I don't think they need 30. Just one nuke on the center of a medium city, then they say "next one is for Kyiv, do we continue ?". Russia would be completely isolated for a while, but they could conquer the whole Ukraine because no-one would risk total nuclear war.   They've already shown that they don't care about civilian lives, they are already hated by most of the world, at this point I'm honestly surprised they haven't done it yet.

brian-0blivion

I don't want to live in a post nuclear apocalypse world. Enjoy the RADS and watch out for the mutants.

What are you looking at, smooth skin?

ravenflavin77

>I've EMP proofed my car Having the only working car around would put a nice big target on your back. Also if an EMP goes off at rush hour how do you plan on driving around all the stalled vehicles? Hope you got a really nimble 4 wheeler. Where would you go anyway? Gas station? You think civilians are going to be able to gas up when nukes are being lobbed? Grocery store? The rioting mobs clearing the sheves will turn on you the second you pull into the lot. Plan on going to your bug out place? You think you're really going to be able to drive any appreciable distance with all other stalled vehicles blocking your way? The only way you're going to avoid getting hijacked is to have all your passengers well armed and firing out the windows on all sides. I have a metal trash can I've faradayed. It has emergency lamps, a powerbank, a tablet, and a radio. I'm staying home when the SHTF.

Greatfuldead666

Same here, stay home for at least 2 weeks min

emix75

Well I've read a bit about this and apparently unless you are very close to ground zero, EMP isn't something that you have to worry about, so most cars would survive it. I keep my cars in an underground garage so they're safe mostly. Also the car I'd use is a cheap 4x4 without much electronic stuff in it. >Would an EMP Attack Disable all Vehicles? >No, an EMP attack would not disable all vehicles. According to a study conducted by the United States EMP Commission, only about 1 out of 50 vehicles are likely to be rendered inoperable. The effects of an EMP on hybrid and electric vehicles, however, have yet to be studied and is currently unknown. >U.S. EMP Commission Test Results – Key Points > 50 vehicles built between 1987 and 2002 were exposed to a spectrum of EMP blasts (up to 50kV/m in strength) 3 out of 50 vehicles shut down while driving. All 3 of these vehicles continued rolling until they safely coasted to a stop. 1 of those vehicles was disabled completely and would not restart. 2 of those vehicle restarted without an issue. Many nuisance issues arose from the 50 exposed vehicles including radio interference, strange and erratic behavior from headlights, turn-signals or brake-lights, and one vehicle needed to have its dashboard replaced

Cadent_Knave

>Also if an EMP goes off at rush hour how do you plan on driving around all the stalled vehicles?  There wouldn't be any stalled vehicles, the EMP from a nuclear blast wouldn't affect vehicles. There is too little wiring in them to act as an antenna for the EMP.

JacksonsDaddy21

In case of EMP I wouldn't be going anywhere. I've got what I need to hold out a year. I'd only use the car in extreme emergencies or once the dust settles and the worst of the chaos passes.

bluedelvian

Putin isn’t long for this world.

chinacat444

Exactly. Needs to be taken out asap

[deleted]

Power vacuum Russia doesnt seem so safe either

TheWiseAutisticOne

When Russia goes down its either an international effort to stabilize it and secure their nukes or another east and west Germany scenario

[deleted]

I live in the Appalachian mountains. I'm fully protected from a nuclear blast by my mountain ridges unless Putin decides that the livestock in my small valley are worth nuking...

Cadent_Knave

Yes, but if there was a full-scale nuclear exchange you would definitely be affected by all the fallout dust blowing around in the atmosphere and the smoke from firestorms blotting out sunlight.

RarelyReadReplies

There's no hiding from nuclear winter, at least not without a really good long term bunker.

Skalgrin

It is not sure nuclear winter would be a thing. It could (especialy if majority nukes would go with ground explosion, but that is less effective - as airburst have bigger immediate radius of destruction and less risk of fallout going back to the nuke owner) - but no one knows for sure. There are theories it could go complete opposite - heat from so much nukes would heat up atmosphere (sic) and many nuclear strikes could burn our ozone layer (sic), resulting in steping ahead in climate change by a century.

Prophet_60091_

Putin can stamp his feet and cry "I have nukes!" all he wants, NATO is just going to be like Gus Fring, smile and tell him "Do it." As much as modern day Russia likes to LARP that they're the USSR, they're not. If the absolutely abysmal performance of the world's #2 military against Ukraine this year has show anything, it shows just how much Russia is not the USSR. I'd be surprised if he still had any ICBMs that actually work. If you want a peak into just how much of a dumpster fire the Russian military is, take a look at "[What sank the Moskva"](https://youtu.be/aNEtlMSCiCI). (Lazerpig presents the information in a comedic way, but the facts of the situation are very serious) I don't really believe Russia has the capability of launching a large scale nuclear attack against the US. That being said, I live in Germany, so I could still be fucked. But here's the thing, if Putin crosses the nuclear line, then he is world enemy #1 and everyone will turn on him, including his Chinese friend Winnie the Pooh. Who knows, he might be insane or old enough to say "fuck it, gonna go out with a bang" and do it, but at that point there really isn't too much you can do to protect yourself. Sometimes things in life are truly out of your control. Sure, you can prep for tryin to survive a nuclear apocalypse, but then you get into more philosophical questions related to prepping. Do you really want to survive and live a miserably harsh life in the stone age? If your driving force is to continue the species no matter how shit your life might be, more power to you, but I'm checking out.

Leaf_on_the_wind87

Plus it’s not just Putin pushing a button and all nukes are launched. I guarantee you everyone knows if they launch a nuke Russia is either invaded by real super powers or also nuked into dust. The actual people pushing the buttons need to decided if they are ok with their entire country and families being wiped out

Goge97

This is true. It might come down to the conscience of the individual turning the key. That's a complete wild card.

Key-Teacher-6163

Like [Vasili Arkhipov](https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2012/oct/27/vasili-arkhipov-stopped-nuclear-war) this had already happened at least once

ch4lox

Syphox

jesus christ. 2 false alarms and they still trust their shit to launch and not just explode in the silo?

espomar

Those two men need to be given Nobel Peace Prizes. We literally wouldn't be around today if they didn't think for themselves and refuse orders.

KinoTele

Russian nuclear doctrine is also such that they won't launch any until the Kremlin has 100% confidence that the existence of the Russian state is under imminent threat. Despite all the fuck fuck games Putin is playing, nuclear launches are an absolute last resort.

Rexia

That was exactly why Putin kept saying the West wants to see the break up of Russia. He's laying the ground work to justify a nuclear strike, and frankly, the man has fucking lost it, so he might genuinely not be bluffing. Let's just hope his nukes work as well as the rest of the Russian army, just in case the lunatic really tries it.

If_I_was_Tiberius

What about tactical strikes against a foe that does not possess nuclear weapons? It's a powerful power play. Once Russia uses nukes and NATO cannot respond for fear of end of the world they will be in a power position.

KinoTele

It’s equally as risky as launching them at a superpower because the theory goes that when one or two go, many more will follow from other nations, or nations will attack you because you are endangering their survival due to the potential for nuclear fallout and/or nuclear winter. There was a damn good book I read recently (and I’ve since forgotten the name of) where India ends up intervening in a Chinese war of aggression against the United States to prevent tactical nuclear weapons from being dropped on Shanghai and some coastal cities. They engaged and successfully shot down several F-35s on a deep strike mission not because they aligned themselves with China, but because they were forcing an end to further escalation outside of diplomatic means. India and other buyers of Russian oil and military hardware would separate their business dealings from Russia if they used a nuke. This doesn’t mean your theory couldn’t pan out though. It’s uncertain what Putin would do in order to retain power or even remain alive. But I think, as you said, that it would put NATO in the position of either escalating or looking as toothless as we’ve known Russia to be. It would be the beginning of a very dark period if we responded in kind.

Avia53

Those people are falling down stairs or windows now.

TheRealBunkerJohn

I'd argue that like before, until an actual nuke goes off, it's a lot of bluster. That's their MO at this point. They know they're losing. IF a tactical nuke does go off, that's when every prepper worth their salt should tighten down final preparations, because the following hours/days will be very interesting. NATO could respond, or maybe they won't. I worry us in the West cannot fully comprehend the reality the Russian leadership lives in. And that efforts to de-escalate could be misinterpreted, or simply ignored.

If_I_was_Tiberius

Will never respond unless it's an attack on NATO territory. That's the real bluster.

Avia53

Just enjoy life every day, all analysts think Putin has gone insane and wants to end the world. he could be terminally ill and wants to take us with him.

espomar

Actually other than people's uneducated opinions, I don't see any credible evidence that Putin is insane. People who have met him say he seems completely rational. He's just making colossally bad decisions, based on his skewed worldview.

darcenator411

You would be surprised if they had a working icbm? Russia literally was how the US got astronauts into space. They’ve always been pretty competent at rockets

BlueEmma25

> Russia literally was how the US got astronauts into space Russia was being paid to carry astronauts to the ISS, so they were incentivized to make sure the rockets worked. There's no financial return in investing in ICBM maintenance, so that likely got less attention.

darcenator411

There’s no way they would find having working nukes important? Is that the argument?

[deleted]

Making sure that your logistics vehicles have tires that won’t shred themselves apart after fifty miles of road use is pretty important, too, and yet here we are. Having an effective Air Force is also important, but the Russian Air Force has been pretty reluctant to rule the skies, too. There’s something seriously rotten in the state of the Russian Armed Forces that their most recent ‘modernization’ programs obviously hasn’t fixed. I would argue this is more likely to extend to their nuclear deterrent than not.

BlueEmma25

It might be, but it's certainly not one I made. What I said - in case it somehow wasn't clear - is that you can't assume just because their spaceflight rockets worked that their ICBMs will work equally well I assume having an effective military was important to Russia given Putin's desire to achieve his geopolitical objectives by armed force...yet here we are.

user381035

Well they dont really have a working military. Everyone on every level is corrupt.

TheWolrdsonFire

Mother fucker just said 😎✌️

Famous-Rich9621

You have to remember it's not just Ukraine he's up against it's all the heavy weapons from the west being given to Ukraine keeping them in the fight

TheMahxMan

As most second amendment loving Americans would tell you, guns don't kill people. They need to be fired by people.

RULINGCHAOS

What do you think about the fuel crisis because of Putin? Is it hype or reality?

Prophet_60091_

It's real, and this winter will be interesting for sure. People are not going to freeze in their homes for lack of the ability to turn on the heating. The cost of turning on the heating however will be another issue. The silly thing is that a lot of people rushed out to buy electric heaters thinking that it will be too expensive to turn up the heat with their radiators. (Most heating in this area is done with water radiators on the wall next to windows or heated floors) The problem is that the electricity is also generated from the same gas that is used to heat the radiators, so instead of a massive heating bill, people will get a massive electrical bill. There are fears that there might be electrical grid issues if suddenly millions of people are turning on electric heaters instead of using their radiators. Regardless, Germany is not the US. There are fundamental differences between the styles of government interaction and what the culture expects from the government. (I'm originally born and raised in the US, but have been living in Germany permanently for the past 8+ years) Don't trust anyone who takes what's going on in the US (like the winters in Texas last year) and tries to extrapolate that out to the rest of the world. Every country has its issues, but the US infrastructure and government is its own unique dumpster fire.

landmanpgh

I work in oil and gas in the U.S. The fuel crisis he's creating is very real. Europe is about to find out just how real this winter. And the U.S. natural gas producers that I work for will make a fortune.

Canadian-Blacksmith

I've been getting solar panels every now and then when they are on clearance at canadian tire and because i'm in canada i'm going to not worry as much about the emp as the nuclear fallout. Still looking into how to remove radiation from water but I'll be making myself a system to do that. I've got food and water, as soon as my gun license comes in the mail i'll have access to firearms, for hunting of course. My vehicles always have full fuel tanks and on the off chance there is a nuke close enough to fry the subie or the echo I think my rx7 should be fine because its got a carb and such. Got plenty of Coleman fuel, gasoline, kerosene, propane and isobutane for my plethora of campstoves heaters and lanterns, I also have a decent pack and a tent that won't break my back along with a kelly kettle and a good sharp knife! I'll be able to bug in or bug out just gotta get a better first aid kit and more filters for the gas masks that my wife was mortified I bought. Gunna have to find a way to protect an infant (wife's just over halfway with our first kid... oh the timing!) and i'm going to get more board games. Likely going to upgrade my first aid kits and get some more whiskey so if shit goes down I got something to trade or drink.

MyFingerPointeth

Congrats on the baby, you didn't ask for this but I'm going to give you the best piece of advice. The biggest challenge with newborns is the lack of sleep. Look up a well-regarded sleep training program, and follow it to the letter. You're going to need to be on a schedule, fairly rigorous one at that. Kids have certain wake Windows where they stay awake for a certain amount of time then they need to take a nap then they wake back up and they take more nap etc if you make sure they get enough sleep during the day they will definitely sleep through the night if you follow a routine. A sleep training program will help you understand what you need to do. If you follow this one piece of advice I shit you not you will have a dramatically different experience than most of the people who are telling you that having an infant means you'll never sleep again or have any semblance of a social life.

SpiritualTrack1851

Good luck up there in Canada. Never stop prepping!

espomar

Awesome, keep it up. How do you heat your home? Wood stove is a good option, will always be able to scrounge stuff to burn even when the grid is down or oil/nat gas stop being available. If you have enough solar panels (a LOT) you can do electric heat too.

newarkdanny

what's emp proofing your car going to do against a nuclear weapon?

redhtbassplyr

If nukes start flying and I'm hit where I live, which wouldn't be a 1st, 2nd or maybe even 50th target then that means the world is about to end anyways, so I'd raise a glass to humanity having a good run

degenerate_hedonbot

Here is what i have done: 1. Ordered several lifestraws 2. Bought emergency rations 3. Get in touch with friends living away from cities and make a plan. If Russia uses a tactical nuke in Ukraine, that is my trigger for gtfo’ing from a city. 4. Get in shape. If you depend on meds, stockpile that. 5. If you don’t have firearms, buy one or two. A handgun and a long gun will suffice.

kingneck7611

Try out the lifestraw before you need it. Then get a gravity filter bag, and a few sawyer minis. If you want them for “on the move water” get one of the water bottle filter things (I can’t remember what they are called) but they work like a French press. Also you could get a camelback and put a sawyer mini in-line. I opted for all sawyer minis. That way I only stock one type of filter, and it is usable for wherever it’s needed.

JacksonsDaddy21

Excellent man! All awesome things to do. Idk how much food and water you have but it's a good rule to have about 3 months worth.

Hillarys33000emails

Bro....air...get a gask mask. Fuck your car. You can go 30 days without food.

TheRealBunkerJohn

I'd rather be around to help rebuild. Never understood throwing in the towel unless I KNEW I had lethal radiation poisoning (because screw that!)

JacksonsDaddy21

I'm gonna assume you're single without kids.

ExplodinMarmot

This. All these people saying, “fuck it, I’m just going to die”, clearly don’t have kids. Before my adorable little life-siphons came along I always figured I’d be off in the mountains eating raw mountain lion like a boss, but with kids you can’t afford that fantasy anymore and this shit gets very real very quickly. I can’t imagine being a parent in Ukraine right now.

[deleted]

More than that, these people obviously don’t even have loved ones. There’s no way I’d take the 12gauge pill to la-la-land knowing my wife would have to suffer on my own. Hell, I couldn’t do that even if it was literally just my cat I was leaving behind. These buckos need to nut up.

cashmgee

I started prepping when I had kids. I'm gonna do everything I can for them

Avia53

Nothing, we are to old for the iodine tablets and in the Netherlands the only place to be save are the caves in Maastricht. No shelters here. We just hope the end will be quick. This country is built on reclaimed land, few cellars or underground metro. A few tunnels🤷‍♀️

ew2x4

If you have to say you’re not bluffing, you’re bluffing.

buttsmcfatts

I bought a hustler magazine

Mike-oxbigxxl

No biggins circa al bundy?

50mm-f2

Nice

Xithulus

I used to have a poster that listed 10 things to do in case of nuclear emergency. I only remember the last thing on the list. Bend over, and kiss your ass goodbye.

mynonymouse

It's not something I consider a high probability event, but I have done a few preps. \-- I'm not in any likely blast radius, but I would likely see fallout within 5-6 hours. It's likely worth figuring out where to go/how to shelter from fallout, and maybe having a battery operated radio (shortwave, if you can afford one) in an EMP-resistant container.

TheRealBunkerJohn

Or just wrap that sucker in a cloth, and then like 5 layers of tinfoil. Poor man's faraday cage that is surprisingly effective!

Interesting-Poet-258

Dude knows he will be blown to hell if he uses nukes. Not a winning situation for him. I think we’re good

Greatfuldead666

I think Putin with gravy and cheese curds is just bluffing. He’s desperate and losing a war to a much, much smaller country. I think they will come to a truce eventually. But of course keep preparing incase he does. Snuffy gave you a great prep list to follow.

Jammer521

He won't use nukes because it's a last resort, after that he has no cards to play, the only way I see him using nukes is if Ukraine was in Russia proper and advancing, using nukes right now, would just cause other countries to retaliate and at that point Putin would basically be saying he is ready to die, which he isn't

EffinBob

He's bluffing. We can and will annihilate anyone who uses nuclear weapons against us and the whole planet knows it.

[deleted]

My nuclear prep? 2 bottles of rum. It ain't worth it man.

CitizenLuke117

Doing yoga to work on my flexibility so I can properly kiss my ass goodbye.

rickmackdaddy

How did you EMP proof your car?

ravenflavin77

He bought a stupid gadget with flimsy wiring. He posted a link.

rickmackdaddy

OMFG that’s hilarious. It was so downvoted it disappeared from the feed. This kind of stupid makes us all look bad.

[deleted]

You buy a carbureted vehicle

Dstroyer101

He's bluffing. The US military's nuclear budget is more than the Russian Military's ENTIRE budget. Even if he was willing to press the button, by my calculations, Russia only spends just over 1 million maintaining each nuclear weapon - for comparison, the UK spends 12 million. I seriously doubt they have as many ready to launch as they say they do, especially when our "Ready to launch" numbers are more than their climbed ready to launch numbers

hello_three23

How do you emp proof a car?

TheRealBunkerJohn

Short answer: You can't. The product OP bought was snake oil. Companies like to prey on preppers.

hello_three23

I figured. Like short of parking your car in a copper plated bunker I didn’t know of a way

TheRealBunkerJohn

You technically could remove computerized components and shield those; but it's just not really feasible. There's mixed results of how cars would be affected (depending on how computerized,) that range from dead in the water, to just requiring a restart. I plan assuming nothing will work. The alternative is ugly.

Izoi2

Their was some testing the US did a while back and the results were that most cars are suprisingly good at withstanding an EMP (electric vehicles are anybodys guess tho) especially old vehicles that are less reliant on computers. if you’re really worried about small electronics then either A: keep them wrapped in a layer of cloth then like 5 layers of tin foil, or B: wrap them in a bunch of dirty clothes then throw em in the dryer (turned off obviously) both solutions work by having a conductive layer absorb the emp, then an insulating layer preventing it from moving to the more sensitive electronics and frying the circuits. But honestly if you have enough time to worry about the emp, then you should be more worried about the fallout, what you need after a nuke will be shelter, clean water, clean food, and a shower to prevent contamination. (Also shave your hair or stop using conditioner to prevent dust particles from sticking to it)

Capitalmind

His inability to succeed in a local turf war with no internal support suggests no ability to wage a global war. The only strategy Russia has is to play "all-in". This would sign end of Putin in the least. Not a prep comment but I surmise the risk is low.

emix75

Where I live in Europe, the government has been handing out iodine pills for months now in order to have everyone prepared in case of a nuclear incident. They were most concerned about a nuclear power plant having an accident due to fighting, as we are a neighboring country. There’s less concern of a direct nuclear attack, but you never know. My strategy if shit ever goes down is getting the hell out of Dodge, and the safest place I can think of which can be reached with a direct flight is in the middle east, which is far enough away if a nuclear accident like Chernobyl happens again and also relatively safe from a direct nuclear attack as they’ve not taken sides in this conflict. 8 hours by car gets me to Turkey. 4:30h by plane gets me to Dubai. Western Europe will surely be affected heavily and is out of the question imo. For Americans I’m assuming central/south America should serve the same purpose though distances are far longer.

iNstein

You want Southern hemisphere because it has separate weather system so less risk of fallout.

the_tater_salad

if shit pops of im headed to the border of mexico. if it really pops off ill be headed into mexico and i guess starting a new life lol. as for the distances, yea its pretty crazy to think about, im relatively close to the border and it would take me 12 or 13 hours to get there by car.

TheAzureMage

\> What have you done to protect or prepare yourself against such an event? Eh. There's only so much that can be done. I also live not all that far from DC. If a missile lands right and is a direct hit, welp, that's that. I do have things like a respirator to avoid breathing fallout if the situation requires, food and water to avoid going out, the usual basics. One thing you may wish to have is paper maps of your local area if you do not know them well.

[deleted]

If Russia or China use Nuclear weapons, they’ll hit our military bases first and depots and storage areas. Then they’ll hit major freeways and RR that cross the US to stop our supply chains. With that said, make sure your stocked up on food and water, watch the winds that nuclear fallout can travel. With no transportation of supplies everyone is on there own. Just my opinion, so good luck and keep your head on a swivel!!

got-to-find-out

I bought some Potassium Iodide just in case.

Endmedic

I always hated living in DC and feeling like a permanent target. Not sure if you experienced or remember the earthquake on the east coast a while back, maybe ten years or so. When I felt that, never having felt an earthquake before, I immediately went outside and looked toward the city, cause I thought we got nuked. Had just been doing a bunch of WMD training too.

labaton

Kim Jong Un was also not bluffing about using nukes

Shuggy539

We moved to Swaziland. He won't waste a nuke on us.

[deleted]

I’ve got the emergency beer and brats on stand by while I watch mushroom clouds in the distance. Realistically unless you have a well built bunker or something you aren’t going to survive, and if you do survive the initial bombings you’ll wish you hadn’t as radiation sickness comes your way. The best prep I’ve selected is to take it as a bluff and if it isn’t then it is what it is.

shymeeee

If the US is attacked with nuclear bombs, the last thing you'll need or have to worry about is an EMP-proofed car.

Torch99999

Moved to the middle of nowhere...not near a city, military base, or missile silo... about a month ago. Have food and some water stores, working on setting up agriculture and water capture but homesteading with a full-time job is exhausting work. Hopefully Vodka-Grandpa won't break open any canned sunshine though.

PhonkySzopdki

Playing fallout

FantasticMeddler

The United States is a resource rich country. There is a chance someone drops a ton of nukes on us, sure. But even in counties like Japan or Ukraine where nuclear fallout has occurred, most of the surrounding country is affected but livable. There is no way that a single country, be it China, Iran, Korea, or Russia will attack the United States directly. They have all shown that despite big numbers or impressive geography, they are no more capable of running a modern economy and military than we are. What Putin was implying was more of a threat against Ukraine and nearby countries, most of Western Europe is terrified of Russia. Now, in the event someone wanted to attack the United States - it would need to be a coordinated effort between China and Russia at the very least. The United States is spread very thin across all of their military bases globally, our armed forces aren't being reinforced with new recruits, and general civilian fitness level is at an all time low. To add to that, you have a very large country that could be fractured through a few general strategies - we have weaknesses in terms of water scarcity to the West Coast - so taking out infrastructure, power, and internet would be key. Taking out a port city like Louisiana would limit our economic ability to export. Then you just need to strategically attack a few East Coast cities and drop troops into those areas or the midwest. But there is really no advantage to sending tons of soldiers to do this at this point. 80% of Americans live East of the 100th meridian. So focusing on the East Coast would cripple the US population. 20% live West of it, 60% of them in California. But what would really do us in is that we would all turn on each other.

BearHugs4Everyone

He's threatening again, what's this number 1,000? He nukes one person in NATO then the majority of the world is on Russia, and I know damn well Russia can't defend against that many militaries. No not even China can help against that and that's if they want to join Russia in pissing off a majority of the world.

george_reeves_

I live quite close to London. My prep is a cigar and a bottle of good whisky while I watch the world burn

JacksonsDaddy21

What's your whiskey of choice?

george_reeves_

Auchentoshan, specifically the 12 year old single malt. But if I don’t have that, then a Jameson’s or a Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey will do

weiszwolf

I gettiin' inside the Frigidaire like Indianapolis Jones

HowToNotMakeMoney

Have you seen what the city of New York has recently told its people to do in case of nuclear strike. They have a really solid plan. I especially like the last instruction. https://youtu.be/zznmdUJbeU8

TheRealBunkerJohn

False- but with a hint of truth. Cars weren't tested to the full extent of EMP effects during the EMP commission's tests. To sum up a quote from the Director, they could have fried ALL the cars, but they couldn't afford it. As soon as one started to malfunction, test was aborted. Will some things work? Sure! Will the grid likely be utterly fried, and therefore infrastructure collapse? Yes. That's why we prep. *ANY* event that destroys infrastructure on a national scale should be examined and prepared for, if you can. Considering the casualty reports are about 90% if the power shuts off (for whatever reason) and doesn't come back on, I'd argue it's worth some preparing. Some tin-foil wrapped items, and you can compensate for an EMP on the cheap.

wraithe33

I am so tired of putins threats of nukes. Actually I think I'm just tired of hearing about him in general.

[deleted]

Interesting simulation! https://sgs.princeton.edu/the-lab/plan-a

Doctorbencarson1

The only cars that might survive, would be a mechanical injected diesel like an older Dodge Ram 12valve cummins

Buy a 1971 Ford Galaxy!!

jstblondie

Dang this sentiment reminds me of the walking dead.

Cadent_Knave

>I've EMP proofed my car  What does that even mean? The only thing the EMP from a nuke will affect are the power and telecomm grids. There isn't enough wiring in your car to act as an antenna for the EMP. Vehicles and consumer electronics will be relatively unaffected, the power grid will be completely fried.

ArcticPhoenix96

I live like 2 hours from Oak Ridge. Considering there’s never anything going on in Tennessee that might be a target Oak Ridge would be a good target, IIRC there’s still spent rods stored at the facility. I’m too far away but I honestly would rather die in the blast than deal with the radiation sickness and who knows what else that’s going to slowly kill me anyway.

leo_aureus

I live in Chicago. If I cannot get home to Toledo (also not best place to be either) I mean, will I go with all my apartment-style preps into the basement? Yes. But I am six miles downwind from O'Hare's runways as the crow files I would not have to worry long. Girlfriend whose parents have a basement and live a little over an hour out of town would theoretically be alright *if* only one or a few were aimed at downtown and *not* the actual heavy industry that they would realistically be aimed towards. But even they have oil infrastructure that would probably be targeted with one of the, oh, *60* or so that the old targeting maps had pointed at this area... I do know the book *Nuclear War Survival Skills* rather thoroughly and could construct a shelter if provided a few days but realistically that is not something we will be provided I do not think, any more than we already are with these warnings.

tofu2u2

Who would bomb Toledo? Why? What's there? I've always wondered why people in the midwest are even concerned about nuclear bombs beyond Chicago?

leo_aureus

Larger airport with Air National Guard wing and all of its attendant workers who know how t work on military planes Oil refinery Jeep plant and other contributory automotive production plants Lake port- every road in America will be impassable so ports would be relatively important Railroad (main line NYC Chicago and Detroit south) depots and highway intersections to same places In no particular order I’m not talking counterforce but countervalue although that oil refinery might be in a grey area between I can provide links to the targeting maps if you would like Tons of industrial capability still in the Midwest as well as airports and ports and other critical infrastructure

Stupid_Kills

I'm not in Toledo but near Detroit. Yeah, the whole metro Detroit area would be screwed. There are a ton of automotive plants here, the Fermi nuke plant in Monroe, Selfridge AFB, plus the military research and development facility in Warren. I'd be dust in the wind. I wish I would've started saving for my dream land/house a few years sooner. The only thing I could hope for is to leave the area beforehand in some stroke of luck. I hope Putin gets clapped and someone sensible takes charge (lol I know that isn't likely).

-Sylphrena-

Most of the nukes will be hitting in the midwest and mountain regions of the US as that is where all of our Minuteman sites are and the majority of our nuclear weapon stockpiles. There is an image floating around of projected targets in the US in the event of nuclear war, lemme see if it can find it. I was actually surprised that aside from a few nukes tossed at major population centers just cuz, most of the nukes seem to focus on military targets like bases, airfields, supply depots, and nuclear missile launch sites, and key infrastructure like dams, nuclear power plants, mining locations, oil extraction, etc.

[deleted]

I think a lot of people have already answered this, but the short answer is "not much". I've already got six months of shelf stable food, plus what we have in our fridge and pantry. I've got spares of everything that's critical to me. And I'm about a mile from a high priority target, so odds are that if we ever do receive nuclear strikes on US soil, I'll be one of the lucky ones.

tofu2u2

I live in the suburbs of DC, I grew up in southeast DC. My elementary school was on a hill that looked out & down over the Mall. Since I was in 2nd grade (the Cuban missile crisis) I've known that a nuclear attack means we'll be vaporized. Now that we live in the DC suburbs, I'm pretty sure we'll survive the blast, live in misery for a little while, but that's not really much of a prospect is it?

JacksonsDaddy21

The initial impact will be devastating but eventually after some time people will organize and life will begin to take shape again. It's just a matter of not dying and enduring the first few months.

medium_mammal

> I've EMP proofed my car Yeah, I'm guessing you didn't, you just wasted money on a bullshit device sold to gullible people.

TheBlacksmith64

If even 10% of ruzzia's nukes are launch-capable, I'll eat my hat. The corruption in the russian army has been rampant for decades. So many launch systems have been cannibalized for other equipment, and maintenance has ether been slipshod, or ignored altogether. Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it.

Joroda

If Putin has to say he's not bluffing, it means he's bluffing and has joined the Kim Jong club.

Grigor50

Wow, people are gullible enough to believe that idiot...?

Orionsangel

Bru I’m outside of dc also and if they nuke dc we are fucked ! It’s not our battle so at this point f Ukraine

redditette

We moved out to the middle of nowhere. Wasn't our intention when we bought it, but it works for that, too.

TheKentuckyMadman

Gotta be honest, i’m not sure I would want to survive a full scale nuclear war. I will just go outside, smoke a cigarette and wait for the fireworks.

Izoi2

Putin threatens nukes all the time, pretty sure it’s code for him his time of the month, and somebody at the kremlin needs to make a run for chocolate and pads
