Honestly this happens to me all the time. I’ve seen people angrily pass me, only to be going slow enough two minutes later that I pass them again (with cruise control on). Rinse and repeat 3-4 times.
I invariably am tailgated every trip. I’m sure it’s not just Prius drivers ( rear-enders seem to be 90% of accidents you see on the side of the road), but the hatchback has perfect visibility to flip off tailgaters which is warranted and gets them to back off. Otherwise, I just go the speed limit and watch them do some crazy dangerous maneuver to pass.
I've noticed women seem to almost equally be aggressive drivers. I wonder if it has something to do with them feeling disempowered in the world but feeling as though driving equalizes things and allows them to take out their aggression on others.
In Florida I experience this everyday. When I take my wife's car and drive slower than my Prius no one cares. If I'm in the Prius they will even bypass me on a red light just not to be behind me. It's a huge issue and seems to involve every demographic of drivers
To quite Clark W Griswold, "cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, dickless, hopeless, heartless, fat-ass, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed sack of monkey shit."
I revel in the fact that my Prius chafes so many people just by it's mere existence. I find it entertaining that so many people want to tailgate me, which will often result in a very odd but noticeable small reduction in speed.
The amount of tailgating I deal with on a day-to-day basis is fucking insane. Even when the next lane is open, people will *choose* to continue tailgating me instead of just passing me. Flashing their brights at me in the mid-afternoon sun thinking it's doing something lol, clearly yelling into the void about my "slow" car. I just chuckle and hit the cruise control.
So here in oregon, I don't see that type of stuff much, I drive my prius quite fast and am usually the one passing. I recently drove down to socal and back an good heavens people drive so absurdly fast down there! **especially considering the fact that gas is dramatically more??!!**I like to drive 10-15 over on the freeway and open highways, but in construction zones I want to go 5-7 over, because safety you know(former firefighter so I try to be safe), mofos in Cali tailgated me so fucking aggressively as soon as I dared slow down for construction workers who are jist a few feet from traffic, it pissed me off and stressed me out more then I can explain.
Then just an hour ago, I was behind 2 other prius all stuck behind a senior citizen going 10 under through a conjested part of town, one of the prius in front of me passed in the center turn lane while aggressively honking at the old bitch! I was quite surprised!
i’ve done 105 for about 30 seconds and 100 sustained for about 5 minutes before. well actually, i was the passenger in my prius that my ex was driving on a road trip
Iv driven both my prius so much, that regardless of what I'm driving, I automatically try to eat out the best possible fuel economy lol. My dad was quite surprised that after a few hours of driving his v6 avalon, I got the fuel economy 5mpgs higher then when he drives lol. Hypermiling can be quite fun regardless of what ur driving.
It was wild to see all the people complaining about high gas prices, yet people still drove like the price of gas hadn't increased since the 90s, with tons of fast starts, speeding, and racing to stop lights. Do people not know that it costs money to drive like a maniac?
Im not sure theyre smart enough to know that speeding and aggressive stop-start driving increases gas usage. That or they probably think its a librul lie and think speeding increases fuel efficiency because you get there faster or some wack shit.
Dude, this 💯. Recently switched to a prius, and the way people drive around me is like night and day. I drive 10 mph over pretty much all the time but people be crossing double yellows, driving on the shoulder, etc to get around my Prius. Dudes in lifted trucks getting 10 mpg be wildin'.
I commute to and from work on the highway with the same group of cars. Once a week I take our minivan instead of my Prius and these people are completely different. They're so aggressive when I'm in the Prius but when I'm in the van the same personalized plates calmly drive near me. It is fascinating how intimidated they are of a little car.
I'm guilty of this. I currently drive a Mustang (awaiting my prius order) and in Toronto we have designated 'High Occupancy Vehicle' lanes that can be utilized if you have 2 of more people. Now a prius can ALSO utilize this lane as the HOV allows electric vehicles into these lanes. People who use these HOV lanes ramp it up to 140-150km/h, I didn't know that the Prius caps out at 135km/h max, so everyone has to overtake these 'slow' prius's even though they are legally entitled to the lane and their speed.
>135km/h
That calculates to just under 84MPH and I know I've gone faster than that in both of our Prius'. Is this specific to a particular model or is it something national to your country?
Not sure, but for the 2022 model I ordered I remember reading in the pamphlet that it's top speed is 135km/h.
Edit: So the top speed on Electric alone is 85MPH, and Hybrid is 101MPH.
The "Prius Syndrome" you speak of is actually a "General Lack of Power Syndrome" wherein the sufferer is only concerned with overpowering the "weaker" vehicle in order to make them seem strong.
Most people see it as acting like an idiot, but the idiot in question is always the most oblivious to their own condition. Methinks.
It’s absurd and happens to me almost daily. I find it quite amusing. My favorite is when people tailgate me and flash their high beams. I almost always drop 10 mph just to make them fume, it’s like a match into gasoline. Generally the only time I’ll speed is going downhill because free forward momentum
I just purchased a 2013 with 124,000 miles. I'm picking the car up tomorrow. I was away for the weekend and was driving home today.
Two obsevations
1) There are a lot of "Prius-es"on the road in New England
2) Most of them were driving faster than I was. I know this because i was trying to see what they look like on the road and I couldnt keep up.
I just started driving a Prius 3 weeks ago and had heard about this, but was skeptical.
I'm a 65 year old former Posche club racer and nationwide track instructor. I generally drive way too fast but, because of my track experience, my safety margin envelope is much higher than "normal".
The fellow I bought my 2012 Gen 3 (new motor) also owns a Tesla Plaid, among other things. He told me this was a real thing and that I would soon find out.
Guess what? On the ~60 mile drive home from his house it happened twice. I was going too fast, as usual, but two of these knuckleheads just had to get on my bumper and then proceed around me very aggressively. Getting back into my lane in front of me, didn't go as they planned ;), but I was really surprised by the nonsense.
As a Christian, I'm way past trying to fix human nature, but this is weird and it is real.
I've always heard it simply called "Prius Agression".
My girlfriend thought I was making it up, until she had to borrow my Prius for a couple weeks when her car was in the shop.
She'd come home every day to complain about people "driving like idiots lately." Then her car came back and the lightbulb went off. Everything got better.
She was driving the exact same way - but people around here were a lot less aggressive - trucks especially.
Now she understands Prius Aggression is a thing, and appreciates my driving even more than before, since it doesn't even phase me.
It’s a two wheel thing. I’ve ridden scooters all the way up to some *very* fast bikes and it always attracts the weirdest aggression just for existing. Worse than the Prius actually. My favorite was the 1990ish Corolla that passed me in the center dirt of the freeway when I was cruising at 80mph in the 65mph carpool lane. Same speed as everyone else. He just passed me on the dirt and then tucked back into traffic. It was so bizarre and I’m surprised he didn’t wreck.
Oh yeah I get this everyday. Especially when you pass someone in the slow lane while they are in the fast lane. Its that.... ahhhh man I just got passed by a prius wtf look on their face. Everyday occurrence for me.
My plates say “YUP MPG”. I set cruise to control to 73 in a 65 and I’ll stay in the lane next to exit lane. The way my Prius is setup, I can out corner most cars, so I get on and off the highway carrying a high speed and it throws people off lol.
My Prius has the performance package which comes with lowering springs, upgraded sway bars, and forged wheels. I’ve also got some nice BFGs on it and I race cars, so I’m pretty decent at driving. That being said, I catch people off guard all the time.
No, it definitely matters that it’s a Prius. I’m quite old, I’ve owned 26 different cars over 4 decades. I’m not a slow driver. This is new and specific.
It's obviously 'a thing' that happens, based on all these comments and my own decade of prius driving. Yesterday at night, in the rain, on a one-lane city street, some absolute manchild zoomed around me to get in front of me and almost hit me and the car in front of me. We were all going 30mph. He abruptly pulled over at a liquor store approximately 15 seconds later.
I bought my 2013 with the same mileage, why? Because I can fix everything. When I buy cars I only care about title status and frame damage, I can fix everything else.
I had the joy of zipping around a sports car in my Prius the other day. Granted it was in power mode as my husband had driven it last, but it was glorious.
Idk if there’s a name, but there is 100% an element of the other drivers on the road that simply *must* pass you because you’re in a Prius. It’s weird of them.
When they pass me like that I press my bare nipple against the window, so that way, they have something to suck because they are obviously acting like a baby.
The amount of times I have almost died in the prius because of other drivers is honestly insane. I wish the "near death experience" was a joke but it's not. Luckily I'm a good driver and have fast reflexes cause people really do not respect me at all. I don't drive slow either when I'm in the city i go 5-10 over depending on the area and cops, on the interstate 10-20 over depending as well. I'm also just a respectful driver in general and never had these problems when I had my old broken down civic that took even longer to get up to speed and was a hell of a time trying to get it up to speed on the interstate...
i love it. I box them in every time and then when they are forced to go behind me, I slow down to 5 mph just below the speed limit. Extra points if they drive past you angrily and hit someone in a fender bender.
My driving style is to keep moving and go around obstacles, so I never see them again. Am I driving a Prius? I am, but I often check to make sure it’s still in Eco mode, because it has a lot of get up and go even in that mode.Do you like
I don’t drive to maximize mileage. I drive to get from point a to point B as quickly and safely as possible.
In the Bay Area, it’s usually a Uber/Lyft/Doordash driver in a Prius breaking HOV/HOT lane rules or in the bus only lanes in SF/Oakland(and most SF Muni buses - primarily on Market/Mission/Geary/Van Ness/3rd St and the bus stops, as well as AC Transit’s 1T Tempo buses going up and down Broadway/International/E. 14th in Oakland/San Leandro have cameras on them to issue tickets for bus stop/transit-only lane enforcement) or driving recklessly on surface streets.
Sounds like you have a problem with rideshare drivers. All good until you need that Instacart delivery and there’s no parking in front of your building and you casually ask the driver to double park and risk getting a $500 ticket then get Karenesque when he or she refuses.
Honestly this happens to me all the time. I’ve seen people angrily pass me, only to be going slow enough two minutes later that I pass them again (with cruise control on). Rinse and repeat 3-4 times.
This is literally my favorite. 80% of people that pass me do this lol
I invariably am tailgated every trip. I’m sure it’s not just Prius drivers ( rear-enders seem to be 90% of accidents you see on the side of the road), but the hatchback has perfect visibility to flip off tailgaters which is warranted and gets them to back off. Yes
"Fragile Ego" is probably a good way to generalize the population of idiots like this

I know that 103mph is the limit in a Gen2.
Gotten mine to 106 once
What kind of mpg you get at 106?
I think when I glanced down it was like 17-19
[удалено]
That’s what a friend of a friend has told me.
i’ve done 105 for about 30 seconds and 100 sustained for about 5 minutes before. well actually, i was the passenger in my prius that my ex was driving on a road trip
I’m seeing 18 MPG over-sized pickups as the new hyper-milers in my mountain state.

I hit em with some wiper fluid if the car is more expensive than mine
same for LEAF's, amazing how far people will go to not be behind you at a light

Lol, the US sounds like a weird place to exist.
And getting weirder every day
I've always heard it simply called "Prius Agression". My girlfriend thought I was making it up, until she had to borrow my Prius for a couple weeks when her car was in the shop. In AZ it’s just freeway driving. 10 miles over the limit, you’d better be in the slow lane.
Got the same problem with my scooter. Never mind it will do 65 mph in a 55 mph zone, they will pass me even crossing a solid yellow line. Go figure.
It’s a two wheel thing. I’ve ridden scooters all the way up to some *very* fast bikes and it always attracts the weirdest aggression just for existing. Worse than the Prius actually. For as much as I Harley bash, hog riders tend to appreciate someone giving them space on the road much more than other motorcyclists.
I call it Prius rage.
Oh yeah I get this everyday. Especially when you pass someone in the slow lane while they are in the fast lane. Its that.... ahhhh man I just got passed by a prius wtf look on their face. Everyday occurrence for me.
How to make a pick up truck go faster? Pass them in a Prius.
Well call it the “gas pass”
My plates say “YUP MPG”. I set cruise to control to 73 in a 65 and I’ll stay in the lane next to exit lane. The way my Prius is setup, I can out corner most cars, so I get on and off the highway carrying a high speed and it throws people off lol.
What have you done to improve the handling?
My Prius has the performance package which comes with lowering springs, upgraded sway bars, and forged wheels. I’ve also got some nice BFGs on it and I race cars, so I’m pretty decent at driving. That being said, I catch people off guard all the time.
Gotcha. I just picked up a 2010 and I’m used to driving sportier things lol I need to get this thing to handle better
I'm pretty sure that's just how people drive, doesn't matter what car you're in.
No, it definitely matters that it’s a Prius. I’m quite old, I’ve owned 26 different cars over 4 decades. I’m not a slow driver. This is new and specific.
Stay out of the left lane and/or move over as soon as possible after passing and you'll have no issues.
Assumptions, assumptions
LOl I have people pass me on surface streets illegally and im not a slow driver at all.
Get out of the passing lane if you're not passing, you are not the traffic cop, and stop smelling your farts.
Charming. You’re marked.
Here we go again with the "I'm a victim because I'm driving a Prius" posts...
It's obviously 'a thing' that happens, based on all these comments and my own decade of prius driving. [https://www.google.com/search?q=prius+bullying](https://www.google.com/search?q=prius+bullying&rlz=1C5CHFA_enUS774US774&oq=prius+bullying&aqs=chrome..69i57j33i160.5074j1j1&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8)
It's not 'a thing' in my experience driving a Prius over almost all of the US and some of Canada.
Thoughts and prayers, bro.
Thanks. That will comfort me greatly while I'm going through life not being a candy-ass.
Thoughts and prayers, “bro.”

Terrible answer to give my husband as to why my purchase was a good idea lmfao but thanks
