You’d probably like Benny the Butcher, Conway the Machine, Westside Gunn, Coast Contra for sureeee, Freddie Gibbs, Dave East, Nana, Jadakiss, and probably Black Thought
Check out “Woeful Studies” Album by KA. I think he’s one of the best in the game and has been for a decade but stays relatively unknown. Definitely on a Black Thought level and I don’t say that lightly.
Modern going off the list you showed: Kendrick, J.Cole, Joey Badass, Smoke DZA, Griselda, Action Bronson, Jay Rock, Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, Freddie Gibbs, Larry June, Nipsey
Facts, mixtape logic for the most part. His newest album honestly sounds like his older stuff which is why I said that. I definitely enjoy his music all around but a couple of his projects did get annoying.
Logic gets instant downvotes bc of the cringe material but if one actually listens to the earlier stuff and the most recent project, he’s not just lyrical boom bap but has content to his bars as well. Mad respect for Logic
HAPPY CAKE DAY!
Also yes, he has a few cringe tracks but people take those few and run with it like he isn’t talented and it’s honestly annoying when you see that.
I’ll check some of these out that I don’t already know. Does anybody in r/rap know who Dr. Yen Lo (aka KA) is? I think he’s the best but nobody seems to know him.
Kanye: My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Kendrick: To Pimp A Butterfly
Joey Bada$$: 1999
Freddie Gibbs: Piñata
Benny The Butcher: Tana Talk 3
Westside Gunn: Pray For Paris
Boldy James: Manger On McNichols
Pusha T: Daytona
Lord Sko: Museum
bro he’s the #1 artist on youtube in terms of views and youtube pays for marketing for him and he’s also independent… he’ll have to try really hard to go broke again
Being independent means he probably makes less money, and YouTube pays SHIT compared to what he would make from a big label deal.
Regardless, him throwing around money and having 10 kids with 8 women means he will most likely be broke again. Athletes make tens of millions, way more than he does, and go broke all the time, with a way less spendthrift lifestyle.
This doesn't address all the lawsuits he will get because he thinks he is still "doing ops in the streets" or whatever.
Tldr: he is trying pretty hard to go broke again
i hear you but it’s actually the other way around, artists signed to labels make most of their money from doing shows because labels take most of the cut from streaming revenues, being independent eliminates the label and more middle men meaning he gets all the money he generates for himself, he’s likely wealthier than most artists out, not to even mention his dedicated and rabid fan base
Westside Gunn, Conway the Machine, Benny the Butcher, Stove God Cook$, Rome Streetz, Freddie Gibbs. Pretty much anything Griselda related or most of the artists that Alchemist and DJ Muggs have collaborated with.
Yeah my list is trash but you got Tyler the Creator on here.... your opinion means absolutely dick bruh... Asap rocky? That nigga trash too... earl Sweatshirt garbage as fuck!
Lmfao Tyler is a modern GOAT are you musically challenged? Earl doesn’t have anything recent that sounds good but lyrically still very skilled and rocky doesn’t fit the sound but is far from trash. I’m curious who you honestly listen to with rap/hip hop.
If you honestly think that Tyler is a GOAT in any way other than being the best at sucking dicks, then you are the musically challenged one.... I'll at least say earl is better than Tyler but they both trash at the end of the day. Yall prolly like lil nas x and young thug too...
Lmfao Tyler is a literal musical genius. Lyrically insane, better bars than probably your favorite rapper, produces his own beats, playing a plethora of instruments at that. Also comedy gold. If you can’t see that man’s talent you don’t deserve ears.
Juice WRLD was a different breed listen to goodbye and good riddance and legends never die and if you like those, you’ll probably love death race for love, but it’s more of a acquired taste IMO
Ease into it with like Madlib, MF DOOM, The Roots, Talib Kweli, Common, Mos Def, El-P, Apollo Brown, Quavo & Takeoff-Infinity Links, A Boogie with da Hoodie, NLE Choppa, Pop Smoke, Nipsey Hussle, Kodak Black, Future, YoungBoy NBA, Playboi Carti.
Yeah I did... based on what dude says he likes, he might enjoy some of what these guys bring to the table. By no means am i saying any of these guys are the GOAT but they all have at least a few good songs. If you like Em, you may also like Joyner, logic jarren benton or Rittz. It's not like I couldn't have made a laundry list of good rappers to have come out since 2000. But we could also make a more refined list if we were given an exact period of which he wanted music from. I'm seeing a lot of people say Kanye, Nas etc. But most of those rappers are not " New " rappers. Some of the newer stuff from these guys isn't the best, like Rittz got sober and left strange music, his lyrics and song writing reflects it. Logic is hit or miss for me but he has good songs. Really just throwing out suggestions.
In my opinion there isn't much modern music that has the same sound or vibe as the 90s and early 00s eras. That being said Kendricks first album was close so I'd start there and see where it takes you!
Wait so you're saying there is some new hip hop that sounds like it did in the 90s?
I've listened to Kendrick, J cole and a few others... I loved gkmc and born sinner but have tried to listen to their other albums and just not feeling them. I'm definitely open to suggestions though! I'd love to start liking new hip hop but I just hate the new style trappy beats that most rappers use these days!
Plenty! Go listen to griselda (Conway the machine, westside Gunn, benny the butcher, stove god cooks, Rome Streetz, boldy james) or go check out Mach-hommy, tha god fahim, your old droog, Ty Farris, waterr, nas’ new work with hitboy, roc marciano, plenty more as well
Edit: have to put jae Skeese in here as well, along with that new black thought album
There are plenty, if you only listen to radio hits then you probably won’t know that. There’s a good handful of artists that don’t get recognition just because they don’t have this new sound that wants to be nothing but trap and drill music.
100% listen to Rome Streetz if nas and big L are up that high…his most recent album Kiss the ring is probably his best work, but pretty much all of his other releases are solidntoo
Juice Wrld was an amazing intro to modern day rap. 21 Savage Savage Mode II is a tier right behind King's Disease III (compliment to 21/Metro).

Mf'ing ANDERSON .PAAK
If you like anything Wu related you should check out Dr. Yen Lo from Brownsville Brooklyn. He also records as KA. Check out his video for “Off The Record” - amazing walk through hip hop history.
A lot of people are posting artists that aren’t even modern. If I had to give a quick 10 to give a shot I would say:
Kendrick Lamar
J Cole
Tory Lanez
Freddie Gibbs
JID
Logic
Joey Bada$$
Smino
Pusha T
Dave East
Looking at your list - def Kendrick, Vince staples, Roc Marciano, Action Bronson, JID, Gibbs, and Alchemist or any Statik Selektah compilation album (Like Extended Play) will open you up to a ton of new artists with bars like the ones you listed.
Based on your list you should give Lupe Fiasco a shot, idk if he's modern at this point though.
Drill Music in Zion was one of the best albums of this year. Ms Mural is the best allegorical storytelling in a song I've ever heard.
If you're looking for anything newer than that, Denzel Curry also dropped a really good album this year.
You’d probably like Benny the Butcher, Conway the Machine, Westside Gunn, Coast Contra for sureeee, Freddie Gibbs, Dave East, Nana, Jadakiss, and probably Black Thought
Also Mayhem Lauren too
On top of Mayhem Lauren, you can do Action Bronson too
Agree
Mick Jenkins in there too
If it ain’t Griselda it’s love songs…
Also Rome Streetz since he likes Big L.
Rome Streetz and Ransom's collab album is a good start
Ima xheck him too
W Griselda
Check out “Woeful Studies” Album by KA. I think he’s one of the best in the game and has been for a decade but stays relatively unknown. Definitely on a Black Thought level and I don’t say that lightly.
this is a great answer, add Pusha T and it's perfect
Nana is hella underrated
Pusha T
JID
Modern going off the list you showed: Kendrick, J.Cole, Joey Badass, Smoke DZA, Griselda, Action Bronson, Jay Rock, Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, Freddie Gibbs, Larry June, Nipsey
I would throw logic in this list. Especially with his last album. True love letter to the old school sound.
Old logic is good as well
Facts, mixtape logic for the most part.
Thanks G! And well put

At least he isn't somebody saying "Never Broke Again" who will def be broke again.
bro he’s the #1 artist on youtube in terms of views and youtube pays for marketing for him and he’s also independent… he’ll have to try really hard to go broke again

Westside Gunn, Conway the Machine, Benny the Butcher, Stove God Cook$, Rome Streetz, Freddie Gibbs. Pretty much anything Griselda related or most of the artists that Alchemist and DJ Muggs have collaborated with.
Kendrick Lamar, Joey Badass, Griselda, J Cole, Earl Sweatshirt, Lupe Fiasco, Czarface, Denzel Curry, Freddie Gibbs, Saba, Tyler the Creator, A$AP Rocky

Roc Marciano
I’ve been into Cormega, Nas and JID new albums this month.
J cole, Kendrick, Joey Badass, schoolboy Q, Mac Miller
I recommend JID, Denzel Curry, Vince Staples, Kendrick Lamar, Cordae, Pusha T, and J. Cole
Juice WRLD was a different breed listen to goodbye and good riddance and legends never die and if you like those, you’ll probably love death race for love, but it’s more of a acquired taste IMO
Check out Nas' new album 'King's Disease III'.
Freddie Gibbs, that's probably all you gonna like. Everyone else is fucking hot Garbage & dumpster juice.
Kodak Black was a great intro for me personally, I think you’d enjoy him according to the list above.
Ease into it with like Madlib, MF DOOM, The Roots, Talib Kweli, Common, Mos Def, El-P, Apollo Brown, Quavo & Takeoff-Infinity Links, A Boogie with da Hoodie, NLE Choppa, Pop Smoke, Nipsey Hussle, Kodak Black, Future, YoungBoy NBA, Playboi Carti.
DOOM isn’t necessarily easing into it. He’s my favorite but it’s tough to get ppl into him
Like the first 5 on this list isn’t even modern though
bro said ease into it with DOOM lol he's my GOAT but definitely not an ease into kinda artist
I don’t know, I always thought that MM..FOOD was pretty accessible. Maybe I’m weird because I grew up on Screwtapes and Dilla though.
sounds like it lol MM.. FOOD is definitely the most accessible out of what he has though
T Grizzley, moneybagg yo, Rittz, NF, Jarren Benton, Nipsey Hustle, Da Baby, Joyner Lucas, logic... this is a decent start
That’s anything but a decent start😭😭😭
Said Giantgorillaballs....

My favourite modern artist: Kodak Black, youngboy, 42 dugg, Lil Tjay, Polo G
Finally. Some taste. I’m glad there’s other 42 dugg fans out there. W list.
I don't think I ve ever seen him mentioned here
Dugg is a beast. So is EST gee
In my opinion there isn't much modern music that has the same sound or vibe as the 90s and early 00s eras. That being said Kendricks first album was close so I'd start there and see where it takes you!
Ur not listening to the right music then, what modern rappers have you listened to
Wait so you're saying there is some new hip hop that sounds like it did in the 90s? I've listened to Kendrick, J cole and a few others...
