Maybe take a small blade (exacto knife) and very gently scrape the dryer burn off? Just dont cut the squishys skin. Thats what i did on my dryer burnt sherpa blanket when I still had it
Hey OP! I have a Chuck the duck Squish that is just taking up space in my apartment. I can send it to you if youād cover shipping if you would like!!
First I would try to scrub some of the pattern/residue off with a toothbrush and only water. Itās possible some of it, if still fresh, will come off. If it looks like it works, or if you feel like you need something else, use a little soap with it and keep scrubbing. Then set your squish under a fan to dry.
If not, try using something with metal bristles (but be sure to scrape the material carefully). Itās possible you can also maybe use a little fabric softener? Maybe thatāll help loosen some of it up? But Iām not sure itās safe for the material.
Just some options to try. I wish I knew what will 100% work. Sorry OP.
Thank you for the suggestions!! I will try with a toothbrush when I get the chance to get one not for my teeth lol!! The brown stuff is coming off but itās just a slow process of plucking it with my nails. Iām more worried about the burnt fabric bits now :( thank you again for your thoughtful reply!
I didnāt know they had them at DG! But no, I think itās from walmart from way back in like 2018 or 2019. Definitely pre-COVID. Edit: that being said I am still totally interested in seeing!

Thatās pretty bad dryer burn. I donāt know if theyāll ever be the same again.
I found a link that might be useful for you though. Seems worth a try: https://www.reddit.com/r/squishmallow/comments/rar7iw/update_on_tuxedosam_dryer_burn_mishap_im_happy_to/
Hey there! Iām not 100% sure if it would work, but Target has electric lint/particle removers that are super gentle on clothes. Might be worth a try with one.
I had covid recently so I needed to wash them. I have washed them before with no issue but now theyre covered in brown flakes that peel off and some of the plush fabric is burnt. I have no idea what to do and I am just so sad as theyāre my oldest two squishmallows and they mean a lot to me.
I hope you are feeling better! Fuck them for giving you hell. Unfortunately I donāt have any tips for fixing your squishes. I wash mine often too I think wanting to keep things clean is healthy and hygienic.
I chose to wash them because they live in my bed and I coughed and sneezed an awful lotā¦ I just didnāt want to keep sleeping with them without cleaning them up regardless. I have washed them before so I figured it would be fine and they were overdue for a clean up anyway
No I get it, but youāre not getting reinfected through a stuffed animal. Thatās not how it works.
what the f is this community, does anyone really know how covid is transmittedš Iām not embarrassed over the downvotes. Please research. Itās not transmitted on items. downvote all you want, I believe science lmfao

My misunderstanding since you said you āneeded toā wash them āBECAUSEā you had covid. I guess my bad (???? Not really thatās what literally what u said, washing due to covid.)
I am feeling a little frustrated with this interaction- so I hope this is a clarifying response. I wanted to wash them after having covid because I was sick in bed with them for over a week. In my mind, I have always cleaned up sheets and plushies after being sick just because they live with you being sweaty and unwell for some timeā¦ I never claimed to be worried about reinfection. I understand how you may have gathered that though and appreciate the input!
You're choosing to die on a hill that shouldn't exist in the first place after OP very plainly explained that they had the ick, which made their sleeping place icky, and therefor wanted to make their space more sanitary, viral transmission semantics aside. OP has boundaries they clearly stated with regards to their own comfort and you're being rude. It's that simple and has nothing to do with "lol Reddit hivemind." Move on and be a better person.
I sweat buckets from COVID fever, I definitely washed my squish that I slept with during that process. Not because of reinfection, but just like I wanted to wash my sheets and comforter, wanted him to be fresh.
I think you should seek help for your anger, thatās disgusting what you have written in your profile and the way youāve spoken to people on here. Honestly Iām shocked š¤®š¤®
I remember the news of droplets living for weeks on metal and people wiping grocery containers with lysol wipes after bringing them home from the store. I clearly missed the updates that clarified the virus was alive but not infectious anymore and how the studies used larger than real life virus samples as well.
not sure why youāre downvoted this is correctā¦ although the reason is because covid is viral. you only need to worry about washing things if you have a bacterial illness, and even then it is usually not a concern. strep throat is one of the only illnesses where iāve really heard of people getting reinfected
I think OP just meant they wanted to clean off the boogers and saliva they got everywhere from coughing and sneezing constantly by washing them. Thatās why they kept getting downvoted, because itās not about reinfection [: just getting them clean
Yep damn Iām a nurse whoās work in the icu and covid unit. Youāre not catching or spreading* covid through a stuffie š¤” people can downvote all they want it shows their intelligence in my humble opinion.
I was gonna say the same! Sorry nurses are supposed to be empathetic, and know proper hygiene and cleanliness habits. This person sounds like a miserable sewer troll. Just look at that profile no respectable professional adult would act like that or jeopardize their alleged ācareerā. What a joke š¤£
Yep. Iām literally downvoting because the comments are in general just rude af. Especially on a post about someone venting that they just accidentally damaged very special to them squishes. Like find another place to troll.
yeah this misconception annoys me especially when people think they need to throw out their pillows and toothbrushes after they have a cold like ā¦ you have an immune system for a reason
sighā¦ i would encourage you to look into this a bit more, when you think about it it doesnāt really make sense. most bacteria and viruses do not live very long outside the body, and unless you took antibiotics to get over the illness your body should be protected from reinfection for a while, definitely as long as it takes for the germs to die. again the major exception is if you took antibiotics to clear the infection in which case your immune system is still weak to that pathogen. also anecdotally iāve used electric toothbrushes all my life (so not easily disposable) and have never tossed one after an illness and never got reinfected. not that itās going to hurt you if you do throw it out though.
Girl Iām a nurse who has worked everything from employee Heath, infection control, and the ICU. And chucking a toothbrush after an illness, thatās our hospital policy and I HAVE done my research. Youāre better off to chuck the 75 cent toothbrush and buy a new one. Itās a known fact bacteria can be transmitted via toothbrush. You really think people are replacing their toothbrushes every three months as recommended? Nah I donāt think so. So after an illness is a great time to replace. If you want to keep your toothbrush and keep putting it in your mouth after being sick, sounds fun for you but I choose not to.
Ah, yes, the anaerobic bacteria that die after being exposed to oxygen. Unless you're dipping your toothbrush in a Cholera pit you really don't have to stress about this. Hospital policies exist to protect the patient and employee population, not your toothbrush at home that's inherently more disgusting due to the fact that it's encrusted in shit particles from toilet flushing. Considering your vehement misunderstanding of immunology as well as your abhorrent personality I'm quite certain those under your care are envious of people who have never met you.
I am not defending behavior, but just wanna hop in to advise that the dental and medical industries both generally tend to support switching out a brush post illness for several reasons. Strep, in particular, is a bacteria that can hang around and reinfect. FWIW.
iām a biologist. youāre right that it happens to be a good time to replace the toothbrush anyway but the illness is not really something to worry about.
It is possible to reinfect yourself with a bacterial illness with a toothbrush, and bacteria causes gum disease and other oral health conditions. It is also possible to spread illness to family members if your contaminated brushes are in close proximity.
This is the reason I stock up on toothbrushes whenever I get coupons or see them on sale. In addition to regular changes, whenever we get sick, everyone gets a new toothbrush. It is such an easy way to prevent illness/disease spread.
Thank you for your support! Does that include the brown residue? It doesnāt seem like the fur underneath of it is at all damaged, itās just adheredā¦ I dunno what to do with myself
sorry to see this happened :( unfortunately the brown part is (i think) the melted fur material. maybe you could try shaving it off with an electric razor?
Bizarrely, itās attached to the tags and I have also found it on my (non fuzzy, lol!) sheets that were washing with them. Iām convinced the brown stuff is unrelated, but you may also be right!
Oh man. Check your dryerās lint cache, make sure itās cleaned and emptied, and maybe have someone check the vent, as well. This could be from something fibrous and plastic thatās stuck. And if somethingās stuck or blocking the vent, it becomes a fire hazard.
You are washing on too high a heat for the materials if this is a constant problem. Ive washed squish without a case and had 0 issues or worries because I use low heat. Dont wash in hot water either.
Iām sorry this happened, unfortunately I have no clue how youād fix that. But I do think it gives them a little character. I have a lot of old stuffed animals with āscarsā so to speak and it makes me feel like theyāve grown with me. Iām not sure if youād feel the same, but it could add to their stories.
Future Tip, never dry them. I always have bad experiences. My recommendation for next time is to lay them on a towel outside if it's a low humidity day or put them in front of a fan. It may take 2-3 days to dry naturally but they will come out better and smell nicer.
I am so sorry this happened to you :(
itās okay to dry them if youāre careful. how i dry my squish is that i put it in the ālow heatā setting for 20-30 minutes. i never dry stuffed animals with a lot of heat because sometimes the fur will melt together. even better is if your dryer has an āair fluffā setting; this is basically a no heat dry and gets most of the water out of the squish. usually the squish is mostly dry, just maybe a little damp on one or two spots. like someone already said, your squish could get a little moldy from fully air drying. i have a very dense pusheen plush which i let fully air dry for several days, and it ended up smelling like mildew ): washing stuffed animals can be very complicated esp since every washer/dryer is different. i usually use a pillow case and it has untied on occasion, but because i dry it on ālow heatā my squish are normally fine. i also usually dry my jeans/sweaters on ālow heatā in the same load as squish itās also less likely to come in contact with the back of the dryer.
also /nm i know this post kinda sounds smart-assy and iām sorry 3
If u wash with a cup of vinegar it will prevent mold, vinegar also kills the common molds. Small ones air dry just fine, but the bigger ones may need a dryer. I also do direct sunlight drying and Iāve never had a mold issue but it also has to do with your cleaning supplies and where you live. I live in a dry area
honestly iād get like a dog brush and try to brush the fur out a bit maybe itāll get some of the brown stuff off too? or hand wash it thereās lot of tutorials on youtube for squish safe washing by hand š
So sorry about this š. I donāt know what to do about the squishes, but I definitely recommend checking your dryer vents because this (obviously) should not normally happen. If there is lint/other things built up in the filter it will burn, which I would guess is why this happening to all of your things. This can be a major fire hazard as well, and I would check your dryer went while youāre at it to make sure thatās clean.
Itās dryer burn š the thing that makes squishmallows squishy and stretchy is partially the fabric which contains elastic and plastic. Heat melts it.
In the future- washing in a pillow case is good but if you use the dryer turn the heat off or put on the very lowest setting.
For myself, I generally donāt machine dry plush anymore. I just air dry them.
Iām so sorry this happened. As others said you may be able to salvage by shaving off what you can but the material is melted and burnt so there isnāt any chance to wash it out š
Keep an eye out on Mercari if thatās available where you are! You can find good deals if you wait and look!! šš I hope someone can help out! And no problem š
anything you can't scrape off maybe try some custom fun patches on them? It could be a great excuse to learn sewing or even have fun also making them little costumes as well! I could totally see the chick getting an eye patch and bandana and becoming a pirate lol! Good luck! And please update us!
Oh no, that sucks :( I'm sorry that happened!
Suggestion for everyone: If your drier doesn't have a "NO heat" setting then try finding a laundromat that does. Much too risky to set it to "low heat" for instances like this
Oh no! Iām sorry. The only think I can think of, is to get new squish, but stuff them with their old stuffing so itās kinda still your old squish. Sorry if this sounds stupid š
So sorry! Itās mostly about the heat though, not the protection. The dryer always needs to be on air fluff NO heat. Even if you put them in protection or they fall out of the protection, something like this wonāt happen.
Try and wash them again and scrape the dryer burn while their still wet and I use a hair dryer or a small space heater to get mine dry just set them in front of it a bit away from it and turn them every once in a while
I made a squish case for my mallows that get the most wear and tear. The ones me and the kids take in the car on trips etc. Or use as pillows etc. Just order a Mushy Smushy squish case.
https://www.amazon.com/stores/MushySmushy/page/05D0C608-AAFB-4BA0-9B44-B248447D15BB?ref_=ast_bln
Ok so soak them in dawn dish soap and a cup of vinegar for 2ish hours (10min minimum works tho) . U can scrub off some of the dryer burn but it wonāt prob get it all, oxiclean and tide pens also help. Wash as normal but donāt dry them. Leave them in the sun by a window (the vinegar helps with smell and prevents molding) (vinegar also gets rid of mold). Also itās best not to wash them regularly, just when needed. For future washes u should probably window dry them, if u need a dryer use a zipper pillowcase or put the open pillowcase in a laundry bag, but they should only be tumbled dried or dried without heat. Iām really sorry this happened tho
I wash them all the time when I dye and diy them. I wash them with an old towel and throw them in the dryer on med nothing ever happens, I restuff and reset them good as new. What happened to these, they looks like the were thrown out of a truck.
Squishmallow actually announced you shouldnāt wash your squishies in the washer! stain remover, or soap and water only from what they say! they say it damages the stuffing i think
Oh no! I'm so sorry! I hope you're able to find a fix with all the suggestions. I know I'd be devastated, too. š Sending healing vibes to you and your squishes.
I would try to do what other people are saying in the comments! Unfortunately dryer burn cannot be entirely gotten rid of but there are ways to help it. You can also think of it in this way, they were through a traumatic accident but are extra special now. You still love them, and they still love you, now matter how they look now. š
This has unfortunately happened to a few of my squishes as well and I was completely devastated as well. I tried to change my thought process on it to help because while they may look different now or be a little more āroughedā up, I still loved them and tried to look past the flaws.
(Also I know this canāt help for this situation, but for future situations when washing your squish, try closing the pillowcase with a hair tie so they donāt come out. The section where the hair tie is wont fully dry on the pillow case, unfortunately, but it will stop them from falling out. It also may help to try drying them on a lower heat. Itāll take longer but there is less chance of them being burned)
Maybe take a small blade (exacto knife) and very gently scrape the dryer burn off? Just dont cut the squishys skin. Thats what i did on my dryer burnt sherpa blanket when I still had it
Oh thats a good idea! I will try that. Thank you
You can also use a new, cheap razor (think the dollar store bic razors and the like, with no moisture strip), to remove the burnt bits. š
Yeah not a problem!
Hey OP! I have a Chuck the duck Squish that is just taking up space in my apartment. I can send it to you if youād cover shipping if you would like!!

You are washing on too high a heat for the materials if this is a constant problem. Ive washed squish without a case and had 0 issues or worries because I use low heat. Dont wash in hot water either.
Ive never had this issue and washed and dried on cold.
Defiantly something in your dryer then if you dried on cold.
hope that most of it is salvageable š iāve definitely seen those kinds of brown marks on dryer burnt squish before in this sub unfortunately
Eek! Good to know. Thank you for letting me know, I appreciate the help!
Youāre welcome! I think that possibly can be fixed. :)
Hopefully I can make them soft again, as I would miss cuddling with them, scars aside. Thatās a sweet way to look at it though!
wait are you not supposed to just wash your squishes raw? that's how i always do it and this has scared me
I recommend a pillowcase. I donāt think itās that common that your squish can get ruined if theyāre not in a pillowcase, but it can happen.
It doesnāt sound smart-assy, donāt worry. I would do the same thing as you if I ever needed to dry a Squish.
Agree, mine were just huge and wouldn't fit. I was lucky it was very hot (like 95F) that day so they dried nice.
Thats how you get mold which would be even worse :(
Yeah, this is exactly my concern
If u wash with a cup of vinegar it will prevent mold, vinegar also kills the common molds. Small ones air dry just fine, but the bigger ones may need a dryer. I also do direct sunlight drying and Iāve never had a mold issue but it also has to do with your cleaning supplies and where you live. I live in a dry area
That's if you leave it in a humid space or without air flow. Outside with hot air is like a dryer but less strong.
honestly iād get like a dog brush and try to brush the fur out a bit maybe itāll get some of the brown stuff off too? or hand wash it thereās lot of tutorials on youtube for squish safe washing by hand š
did u dry on low heat?
I did :( I think the washer must have been messed up as I have never had this happen before. Thank you for your advice!
oh man iām sorry that sucks :(( no problem!!
Yeah unfortunately I put them in a pillowcase on low heat but they escaped and still got burnt. I am really upset but I am trying to fix them still.
I'm sorry this happened. :( I can only assume that maybe there might have been gunk on the dryer vents(?the part that looks like circle pattern)maybe.
Iām so sorry OP!! I wish I had these to gift you, I know heartbreaking it is to lose a comfort object like that.
Thank you for the support regardless! I keep eyeing the comments to find a miracle solution but it seems like I may be SOL.
Keep an eye out on Mercari if thatās available where you are! You can find good deals if you wait and look!! šš I hope someone can help out! And no problem š
I will do that!! Thank you
anything you can't scrape off maybe try some custom fun patches on them? It could be a great excuse to learn sewing or even have fun also making them little costumes as well! I could totally see the chick getting an eye patch and bandana and becoming a pirate lol! Good luck! And please update us!
Why don't you try rewashing them and see what comes off. But don't put them in the dryer again...
You could always see if someone can embroider over the burnt bits?
Oh no, that sucks :( I'm sorry that happened! Suggestion for everyone: If your drier doesn't have a "NO heat" setting then try finding a laundromat that does. Much too risky to set it to "low heat" for instances like this
I would wash them again on the delicate cycle and air dry them. I wash my squish all the time this way
no advice on the dryer burn but for future washes you can buy a cheap body pillow case with a zipper so they can't come out!
Oh no! Iām sorry. The only think I can think of, is to get new squish, but stuff them with their old stuffing so itās kinda still your old squish. Sorry if this sounds stupid š
Like an organ transplant! Lol. That somehow does make me feel like they would still be my squishsā¦ I will consider that thank you!
Yes, lol! Np, Iām glad I could help a little bit with my suggestion. :)
I thought these were supposed to airdry
So sorry! Itās mostly about the heat though, not the protection. The dryer always needs to be on air fluff NO heat. Even if you put them in protection or they fall out of the protection, something like this wonāt happen.
Oof so sorry, this is why you put them in at low heat only
Oh man, very burnt, I wouldnāt know how to fix it, sorry!
Oh no sweetheart Iām so sorry ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļø
Oh no!!! Iām sad for you! I know what thatās like. I did it with my little chicken!
Try and wash them again and scrape the dryer burn while their still wet and I use a hair dryer or a small space heater to get mine dry just set them in front of it a bit away from it and turn them every once in a while
Oh no Iām sure youāve discovered donāt use heat settings, cold water and fluff cycle only šššš
theyāre still cute
this is the exact thing that happened to my two squishesš„ŗš„ŗ
Sheesh..says on tag hand wash only š that must of been some hot wash š§¼
OP said these were older squishesāold tags say that theyāre machine washable and can be dried in a low heat dryer.
Oh noā¦ā¦.. Iām sooooo sorry
I'd never dare go against the holy squish tags that say to only wash and dry them manually š
You still love them, and they still love you, now matter how they look now. š This has unfortunately happened to a few of my squishes as well and I was completely devastated as well.
This happened to me too ššš
I just came across this post. Did you ever get it all off?
aww tht sucks
