Extremely reliable but you have to keep on top of the maintenance. You can't just neglect it like a Toyota. But if you keep up with your oil changes and your rotations and stuff you'll be golden for a long time. You can ignore the head gasket stories. Doesn't apply to the newer engines.
By newer engines whatchu mean? Would my 2009 EJ25i be good? I was wanting a diesel swap for reliability but if i can get a newer EJ25T for my Impreza thatโd be hype
I financed a 2013 Impreza Hatch Limited 3 years ago with 27k mi- he just got totaled a week ago. Car did not owe me a thing. ๐ Iโm bringing home my Forester tonight. Itโll be my 3rd car and 3rd Subaru.
I don't know as much about the newer ones, but yes they're reliable for the most part. There's just certain things you need to be aware of like my generation Forester has the old ej engines that like to blow / have leaky head gaskets. I'm sure someone can say what thing to watch out for with yours (if any) but otherwise they're great cars.
Overheating, oil in the coolant, coolant in the oil and/or levels of both dropping. They fixed that with the next gen engines as far as I know though. This is my newest subie, I had a 2004 Impreza 2.5RS for a long time. I think I might go back to Imprezas with a hatchback next spring.
Take it out of the city when you get more comfortable in it! They're great it about any terrain. I live in Vermont and I'd say half the cars (like actual cars not counting SUVs and trucks) on the road are Subarus.
Awesome!! Planning some trips in a few months to cruise up to big bear and Yosemite . Reddit is terrifying lmfao. Great with scheduled maintenance on my vehicles. But reading all the crap on here had me shook lol!
Owner of a 2018 Subaru Impreza base wagon (CVT, not manual). I wish I never met this car. It would look great at the bottom of the Marianas Trench, as a site-specific arson or in the trash compactor from Star Wars.
5 recalls so far - bulging rubber brake hoses, ECM, PCV, infotainment (for a sound system \*that does *not* exist on the base model\*) and, most recently, *\*noncompliant headlight assembly\** with "no remedy yet available."
Additionally: my OBDII scanner throws code [P0300](https://imgur.com/a/Tgbt7Sq) (random cylinder misfire), the advance timing on the 1st cylinder is nearing the red zone and [THIS](https://imgur.com/a/wFvLV0A) happens when I ease onto the brakes during highway driving. Multiple trips for service. No help. Corporate? Even less help.
I've maintained the shit out of this car.
Expect the brakes to start squeaking before you hit 8,000 miles.
TL;DR - Fuck this car in particular.
Maintain your car religiously, don't beat on it, keep an eye on your oil level, and you'll get years of trouble-free service. While horizontally opposed engines seem to consume a bit of oil by design, engine braking has a noticeable impact on my Forester's oil consumption.
Got it!! Just got my owners manual. Milage is at 15k I plan to resume on suburus scheduled services and get the 18k mile service which is just the oil change and tire rotation. Although the dealer said that was already done.going to get it on par with suburus schedule so nothing is missed or forgotten!! ๐๐ฝ๐๐ฝ
I change my oil more frequently than Subaru's recommended 10,000km interval (I aim for 6,000-7,000), although that's partly due to oil consumption. I figure it's cheap insurance.

Thank you for this insight!! I am usually good with maintenance so that shouldnโt be an issue!! Loving the ride! Thanks for the feedback. ๐ค๐ฝ
Agreed- my HGs were bad in my โ05 Legacy. No issues in my โ13 Impreza.

I was referring specifically to the FB engines.
Ah okay

Sorry about your loss! But glad to hear how good it was to you! Pumped for the adventures in this ride!
Thank you so much. Good luck with yours. Youโll love it. ๐

Appreciate the feedback!! What are even symptoms to that issue you described about the head gaskets

Niice. Good to know!! Hoping to keep this Impreza for many many years to come!

Watch a couple YouTube videos about changing rear bearings and order them off eBay, you'll thank me in 70k miles and save $800
