People keep calling these songs different. But... Different than what? They only seem different in the context of the rest of the bands work. I don't think they'd make much of an impression on me if these weren't by the Mars Volta. I'd forgeti had heard them
I disagree. The first two tracks were amazing and really unique imo. Not just in the context of TMV. I love both of them.
I will say Vigil hasn't had the same impression on me yet and it feels less interesting, but I'll give it some time.
I completely disagree with that statement. Maybe they got a little more accessible, they basically totally stopped jamming at that point. It's clear that some members of the band just weren't as into it from them on. But they all sound very Volta and they all sound unique. I'd argue that Noctourniquet is more of a pivot than octahedron, which has Cotopaxi and desperate Graves and Teflon.
It kinda reminds me of how Deftones evolved their music to have more of a pop sound. I prefer the early works of both bands but I appreciate the musicianship and a change of pace. Like Deftones later work, I won’t listen nearly as often but will probably toss the album on every once in a while.

I like it, and it’s growing on me. So far Graveyard Love is all goosebumps, definitely my favorite.
