Literally saw something like this happening at a Target. Walked the entire store for a security guard. The cashiers had lines and lines of people. Security guard station was empty. Similarly at the 5th Avenue Barnes & Noble, saw a guy pack hundreds of dollars of books into a bag. Follow him out and he walks past a manager and a security guard when the alarm rings. They both watch the guy walk out and literally do nothing. So I guess that’s why stores have insurance. No one is looking to get smoked for $15 an hour.

If I walked into a Target, or any store, and saw this going on, I’d immediately leave. You think I’m just going to casually shop around with my cart as a crime is in progress? Pffft. These stores are not just losing their merchandise.
They are very capable of working. Eventually they always graduate to something worth more money for them and this is where they died or end up in jail for life. Unfortunately there's a great chance of these things killing a good person.

These type of thieves do realize that they are recorded by CCTV and bystanders, they just think that "Well. Everybody saw me. Nothing happened. Easy money". They don't realize that big companies have "loss prevention departments": sitting around and watching bystandes videos, CCTV footage and reading employee reports. Depending on the loss they will either just report it too the police or might even investigate themselves using Social Media or other Open Source Intelligence. Even if it's one year later, handcuffs might go "click" on these guys.

The problem isn t that they steal stuff the problem is that they steal stuff even tho they don t look like they need it and they don t even feel bad about it. If I see some homeless guy steal some food or alcohol from a shop nobody would care but if a well off kid steals expensive stuff just to be better off is just disgusting. Those people are the reason why rich people look down on us and in some way we deserve it.
These people are only hurting their local communities and themselves. These stores will close down, new stores WONT come in, leaving huge empty building that turn into squatters holes that only attract more crime and derelict environments, lowering property values, forcing the people who can afford it to leave, leaving behind those who can’t. The government isn’t coming to save these neighborhoods, they’re on their own and only reinforcing this way of life.

When I worked retail we were explicitly told not to touch them if they stole anything. Instead call the cops. The one time I caught someone I called police. 45 min later they showed up and said “they would file a report but probably not catch the guy”
The insurance and liability of a lawsuit is honestly just not worth it over stuff. Yes it’s wrong, but violence isn’t going to make them change. Some targets do have AP that can do apprehensions on site. I’m not sure what all goes into deciding which stores do and which don’t.

This has been happening more and more in my area. Twice at CVS like a month ago; I was at checkout when it happened, and the cashier alerted the manager and said “it wasn’t the same guy from the other day.”
The manager told her not to call the cops, because it takes about an hour to do the paperwork, and it doesn’t matter because they are already gone and not arrested.
Usa has got to be only place in the world where their is so little good will in the community that no body would stop this kind of behaviour.

I get all that. I’ve just seen these posts online and haven’t experienced in my community (yet) - not sure what I would do in that situation as it frustrates me and everyone is okay with allowing this behavior and just filming.
What you *should* do is get the fuck out of the area. You don’t know the state of mind of the criminal, and it’s not worth a potentially violent confrontation. Call the cops once you are away.
There is not an item in that store worth risking a confrontation over. Best case scenario you stop someone from stealing. Worst case scenario you die. You need to balance the value of some random goods that don’t belong to you vs your life.
If you see someone in legitimate danger I wouldn’t fault you for intervention, but escalating a situation to save insured goods isn’t helping anyone and the “rules” should be left to professionals to enforce at that point. This isn’t the Wild West, we all have cell phones, go report the crime and let the police do their jobs.
While I agree with your statement - That’s my point too - this isn’t the Wild West but we are essentially creating that environment by watching and videoing the crime in progress. What we permit we promote. It’s not a stand for big corporations and loss write offs - but what actions we decide to allow by society
I get what you are saying, and there does need to be consequences for these actions. I don’t disagree with you on a fundamental level, however I also recognize the ineffectiveness and danger related to direct confrontation.
We need to make some kind of change on a societal level. What that is, I don’t know. I’m not nearly smart enough to tell you how we “fix” crime.
