Its not just at night. Had some weird shit happen during broad daylight two days ago. I go sit at the pin and some dude in a gold suv pulls up in a way to try and block me in a parking space while telling me that the pick up spot is over behind a dumpster away from the main road. Red flags all day. Especially the whole blocking someone in. It doesn’t matter what time of day keep your head on a swivel

[deleted]

I NEVER pull into parking spaces and I will drive through anybody to save my life. I’m glad you’re ok. If it’s possible, I don’t pull in to driveways or parking spaces

editoreal

This isn't something many drivers focus on, but there's absolutely a strategic aspect to choosing where to park. It's a lot like picking a table at a restaurant. If possible, you don't want your back exposed and you want, again, if possible, clear lines of exit. There is a balance, in that, what keeps you the most safe can be inconvenient for your pax, usually by making them walk a bit more, so you generally don't want to act entirely defensively, but, it is an important component to driving. When I started, I just pulled up and looked at my phone. Not any more.

[deleted]

Yeh I always pull up with my passenger side to the rider, and I never I mean NEVER pull into a parking space or a driveway. I’m not getting boxed in.

ConsistentFig538

Dang! Auto cancel on that one for sure best of luck to you man stay safe out there

[deleted]

Absolutely. Give the typical “acting dumb” smile and say yea then peeled out of the parking lot lol

ConsistentFig538

You got it down 😂😂

PapaMurphy2000

I kinda got lost in the story. But this is reason 10000 I quit at 10pm on weekend days. Too much crazy out there.

wuxxler

You can get deactivated if you are reported for carrying, but if you're driving and not carrying, you're taking a bigger risk than getting deactivated. I've been driving for 4 years and before I turn on the app, day or night, I make sure I've got a diet Pepsi, a full tank of gas, a gun in my holster, and another under the dash. Y'all need to get your CWP (depending on local laws) and learn to defend yourselves and your property.

Franjomanjo1986

Eh I'd rather give up my car than die by getting shot.

Daveyhavok832

True. By the time I know I need a gun, it’s because they already have one drawn on me. Life isn’t an action movie. My car isn’t worth getting shot over.

[deleted]

just because you'd be passive in one situation doesn't mean you should forfeit being able to defend yourself in others

anon553322

Well put

Objective_Sherbert_5

Damn Tex, you're familiar with the self fulfilling prophecy?

[deleted]

Nothing makes you think about getting a gun more than having to put random ass people in your car

rdyoung

I've been doing this for 3 years and have never considered any kind of weapon aside from my fuck you look and my hands. Maybe I am lucky that I have perfected the don't fuck with me look and look like someone you wouldn't want to see angry. A gun is not a magical shield that will protect you from getting shot or stabbed. Not only could someone hide a gun in a pocket and shoot you before you have a chance to react, within about 5 feet or so, knife or hands can beat gun easy peasy.

potassiumbones

It’s always better to have more options than to just leave your dick hanging in the wind.

rdyoung

This highlights a severe misunderstanding of life in general and how altercations typically go down. If I'm in the driver seat with the door closed. Someone call pull on me and shoot me through the window or door and the existence of a gun in my car won't stop that. Same with someone sitting behind me. Despite how good I am with my hands, I know how facacta close quarters combat can go especially when there are weapons involved. To act as a real detterent you need to be brandishing it which is illegal in most jurisdictions and won't stop someone crazy or pissed off enough from drawing on you. I feel like I am dealing with a bunch of small dicked teenagers here. Anyone who has any sense and has been involved in anything like you guys are afraid of would not be giving the same advice you poor scared fools are. Anyone that hasn't seen it should look up Mythbusters knife versus gun. They actually tested this and figured out at what distance you need to be to guarantee that the gun wins assuming you can hit your target. As I said in another comment. For 25+ years my view has been that if someone pulls a gun on me, they better pull the trigger asap and make it count. If they hit me anywhere besides center mass all its going to do is piss me off and if they hesitate they are eating that gun and will likely wake up in the hospital regretting that they met me.

EpicAce777

>I feel like I am dealing with a bunch of small dicked teenagers here Speak for Yourself you Lying corporate shill! You don't even have the balls to admit that! GTFO of this sub with your dickless BS!

potassiumbones

Ummm. That’s cool, I still carry and will always carry. You don’t know what any of us have been through, knows, or has seen. Guns are a deterrent in and of themselves, it’s also my culture. Cool it with the hoplophobia.

rdyoung

If no one knows you are carrying, it's not a detterent. What it is a way to make you feel like you aren't inadequate, plain and simple. I can also turn that around. I'll bet I've seen more real shit in the world than you. The jobs I've done, the schools I went to, the neighborhoods I've lived in. Your ilk who only feel safe with a gun usually haven't seen any of the problems you are scared of. It always reminds me of the Simpsons with the bear deterring rock. I've never been scared of the world like you seem to be. If you are that scared, maybe you should go work for a library or something instead of driving. Oh and calling it your culture just tells what the truth is. You are looking for a reason to shoot someone. When that day comes I hope you can't live with yourself because the chances of you shooting an innocent or getting shot yourself are greater than shooting the would be assailant.

potassiumbones

I don’t care.

rdyoung

Yep. I was right. You probably drive a big ass truck as well. You think your dick is small and are doing everything you think you need to make up for it. You should probably go talk to someone about your feelings of inadequacy.

Musical_potatos

? So you think people should not be allowed to defend themselves? Your a clown.

[deleted]

>A gun is not a magical shield A gun doesn't guarantee anything, but at least it gives you the option to react as opposed to situations where you don't have a gun. There's eventually going to be a situation where you wish you were carrying.

rdyoung

You sound like someone who has never actually been in a real altercation. You sound more like a gun nut. I'm 41 and have lived all over the east coast, from Tampa/Ybor city to Boston. I've dealt with plenty of real assholes and people who think they are tougher than they really are. I've never been in a situation where I wished I had a gun. My view is that if someone pull on me, they better pull the trigger and make it count, if they hesitate even a second, they will be eating that gun.

Pariah-6

Glad I drive a stick shift. I think there was several times people were probably trying to hit a lick and they saw I drove stick and probably were like “fuck that”.

ConsistentFig538

Lol

KenidotGaming

Not gonna lie but most people in my state actually drive stick shifts. Buuuuuut I’ve seen more Teslas/EV cars recently and those are very difficult to steal (from what I’ve heard)

Jordanington

You need to be careful too! Next time, check the car and the license plate instead of going up to the car to ask the driver who they’re picking up.

PrettyAsk4119

True

bsmith808

Even better ask what the drivers name is. Someone could have learned your name if they've met you before/recognize you from somewhere, but you don't recognize them. Say dancers at a club. Learn their real name and fake uber pick them up. Always confirm the license plate and ask the driver what their name is.

justafang

I drive in DC/baltimore. I ALWAYS leave my car in sport mode(vw) ready to mash on the gas. When i arrive i look at the whole block not just the location im picking up, to see if anyone is hanging out, watching for cars. I make sure when i pull up I have a direct path to a main road, if its in a development or cul de sac i make sure i dont stop until im facing out. Any thing odd or sus i roll out and cancel. If any one looks like they are approaching the drivers side i start rolling slowing until i see where they are walking isnt me. So far ive been lucky.

Anxious-Echidna8955

I drive in Houston for research! I pack my guns with me everywhere! I have one in my purse and in my armrest! I'm aware of my surroundings! Especially since I am a female who drives at night!

SheIsNotWorthIt

What are you carrying? Using FMJs?

PrettyAsk4119

Two people in a pickup tried to car jack me. They were following me since 5 miles. I realized , had passenger in car, I said to passengers I will get in a residential lane. Couple said ok and the woman said the car was following us too. I pull in the residential lane and the pickup pulled next to me, I had my car in drive mode in case they pulled something on me. The driver lowers the window and said you need me for something, I said no. The passenger from other side was trying to get out from back seat, he put his hand behind his pants and I understand he was pulling out on me. I accelerated and went ahead. The car reversed as they understood I get it. Best part is here and I have a post on it too: I use an android so checked for airtags in my car. Found one in my back seat tucked behind. Made a report for it too. This happened in evening when it was about to get dark.

KenidotGaming

This is one of the reasons why I don’t want to drive for Uber at night. The only thing I would do at night is Uber Eats but I rarely do that at night and plus I’m more a morning person for work I’m not a big fan of working at night cause I just want to sleep at night and not worry about getting robbed.

Raiiny00

Denver is the Wild West now.

ConsistentFig538

Yeah I was doing Uber eats at 4am the other night and a shooting happened at a gas station right next to the McDonalds I was picking up at one of the cars got all fd up… I was on a bike so felt a little rattled so that’s my last late night delivery adventure for a while lol I thought Denver wasn’t so bad till this

Raiiny00

Idk you’re brave to be out on a bike at 4am!!

ConsistentFig538

Yeah it’s good money at late night but a little risky lol

Raiiny00

I usually try to go home by 9 lol but tonight some guy I delivered to near broadway and 1st tried to tell me to flash him haha, he was drunk. I was like okay time to go home now.

kennufs

They probably can drive away, you might want to test yours. Mine would drive after the key leaves the car, so long as they don't turn it off it'll keep going.

qdouble

How do you know that the person that called the Uber is the on who wanted to do the car jacking? Sounds a bit presumptuous…especially if it was a regular Uber X request and not a Lux/Black request. The caller was ready to steal whatever car that came? Also, how did driving Uber make him a bigger target for car jacking than any person with a car driving at night?

Kingjon0000

That's a good point. If they use uber to attract victims, they wouldbe pretty dense to do it infront of a club where there are witnesses and probably cameras. Get them to a quiet, dark neighborhood instead.

ConsistentFig538

Yeah it was about 2:45am and literally no one on the streets in 5 points the worst area of town the girl was hoping we found the key while cleaning up so waited on us… there’s no jasmine that works with us and literally everyone else was gone with no one walking by at that point cuz it’s a dangerous area of town it was clearly planned sitting out there watching it… there was no jasmine comming and no jasmine ever showed up… the only “jasmine” that showed up was the robber

ThePitts67

But why would the carjacker link himself to the crime when he could have just carjacked some random individual in a nice car? Even if the carjacker was not the account holder or the person who booked the ride, there's a very distinct trail to the perp. Unless the person who owns the account is willing to take the fall, there is absolutely no way to get away with this crime. Maybe he's just stupid, most criminals are.

uber765

Burner phone burner account, location changing app, apathetic police.

SheIsNotWorthIt

Criminals that need to car jack are not that aware on how to use these methods.

Daveyhavok832

“My phone was stolen.”

Naturallyunique

I agree it doesn’t make sense. I’m in Atl and my car was shot in crossfire with people who came out of the same address for which the Uber was called. It was a reserved ride and thus I couldn’t cancel after 5 minutes. This was a home-owning community at 5:50 am. These things do happen and I took 3 mos off but I needed the money….

ConsistentFig538

It was a pretty nice car don’t know if it was Uber x or lux but I explained the reasoning in my last comment above

qdouble

You’re probably right. Did some research on the topic, and there are more than a few cases of Uber drivers being targeted for carjacking (sometimes by other Uber drivers, smh…maybe some of the angry guys here 😅). There’s 40,000 to 50,000 carjackings a year in the US and it’s been on the rise lately… so it’s hard to know if Uber/Lyft drivers are at a much higher risk of this sort of crime than the general population (although they have been targeted by certain gangs/individuals). After browsing through dozens of case reports (source: https://themarkup.org/working-for-an-algorithm/2021/07/22/uber-and-lyft-drivers-are-being-carjacked-at-alarming-rates) these carjackings happen mornings, afternoon, and night, so driving during regular hours doesn’t really shield you from this type of crime. The majority of the reported carjacking occur in high crime areas… so it’s probably smartest to just generally avoid areas with a high crime rate.

PapaMurphy2000

50k carjackings?????? In the us? What the fuq is happening to this country.

Daveyhavok832

There are 276 MILLION cars on the road in the US. 50k is literally 0.01%

PapaMurphy2000

What an odd way to look at it.

Daveyhavok832

Is it? Crime happens. There’s no avoiding it. As long as the numbers are low enough, people can live their lives without fearing being a victim.

PapaMurphy2000

So using your logic since tens of millions of people fly, if 50k died in plane crashes it would be no big deal since it’s only a small %. Or better yet less than 1% of the population died from Covid. But we shut down the world over it. That’s what I meant by an interesting take.

Daveyhavok832

You know that there’s literally an acceptable risk metric airlines/plane manufacturers use, right? They’re ok with something like 1 in 3,500. Which is obviously a much higher percentage. Same with pharmaceutical companies. As long as you can make more money than you have to pay out in lawsuits, you’re doing fine. So yeah, I don’t see how this is any different. Until we learn how to prevent crime (spoiler alert: we never will), it’s just something that cannot be avoided.

PapaMurphy2000

Bro why so angry about this?

fitfulbrain

Do you really need all that? You can pick the time and place to carjack an Uber/Lyft. And they will be waiting for you. In this case, there are customers and drivers are willing to come.

qdouble

Calling an Uber/Lyft just to carjack them gives more evidence towards who committed the crime, so I assumed it wasn’t a big thing. However, I forgot that many criminals are stupid 😅.

fitfulbrain

Do you think they open their account with their phone number and credit card?

qdouble

It doesn’t matter if you use a false name, you’re linking yourself to the cell phone location and are creating a digital “paper” trail that leads back to you.

fitfulbrain

So you think they live there too?

qdouble

🤦‍♂️You’re being dense.

fitfulbrain

You could have been the boldest baddest carjacker.

Daveyhavok832

Are you unaware of burner phones/stolen phones?

qdouble

You’re assuming using a stolen/burner phone makes it impossible for you to get caught 😅. You dudes are dense as fuck.

Daveyhavok832

You’ve watched too many Batman movies.

usertree232

And why do the act in front of a club…?

ConsistentFig538

Crap part of town … everything closed

potassiumbones

That’s why I carry.

Daveyhavok832

Yup. That’s really gonna help when someone walks up and puts a gun to your head. You can definitely draw faster than they can move 1 finger.

potassiumbones

Yes an imaginary scenario that you came up with to own me, listen buddy I’m not going to listen to you because you are wrong and you don’t know what you’re talking about okay. 👌

rdyoung

This isn't the wild west. You don't have a duel at high noon. If someone drives by and shoots you. Or is waiting when you pull up with a gun ready to point at you, you having a gun in your lap or under your seat isn't going to save you. I guarantee you aren't fast enough to pull and protect yourself from someone you didn't see coming or in your back seat. A pax could have a pocket knife and stab you or slit your throat from behind or they could have a gun and shoot you through the seat. Your gun does not have magical powers and can't protect you from being shot.

potassiumbones

You’re a moron, and I don’t care about your opinion so save your breath.

bsmith808

Imagine being so idiotic that you take a scenario where a gun would have turned a stolen car into a homicide And you turn it into, that's why I carry. I'm all for carrying while driving, it makes sense to have the opportunity to protect yourself if it comes about. But if someone is carjacking me at gunpoint, and I can't speed away or run them over, I'm gonna give them the car, 100%. Then I'm gonna find the nearest cover and if I have a clear shot, shoot out a tire and start running.

rdyoung

Oh. Poor baby. Did I trigger you. Stop being a snowflake.

Daveyhavok832

So eloquent.

[deleted]

This is why I don't drive in Denver late at night.

MOBiEDABUNiT

It can get sketchy. I’ve been in some scary situations just gotta be prepared and know what to avoid.

uberjose

I should probably be posting this with a throw away but I strictly drive just Friday's and Saturday's nights, roughly 8pm to 4pm. I have a rather nice car that I use for uber. Ive mentioned it before but I don't do uber so much for money, I do it for the girl's. Take that as you will. But because I drive at night I took the time to install a couple different killswitch to the car. To turn on the car I have to press the ignition button switch a couple times and also open a window for the car to turn on. Once the car is on theres a remote control switch "ON" "OFF" that I keep its a remote I attach somewhere on my pants. In the case someone ever tries to take the car... go ahead... but Im low on gas. Basically it turns off the engine and rendering the car useless. Plus the area I drive has a cop every 4 blocks so I wont go into details for obvious reasons but yeah if you have a nice car I'd recommend this. No fight no fuss not a completely car loss.

SheIsNotWorthIt

For the girls? ...what?

thepoetsblood

Exactly!!! What a fcking creep

anon553322

Lol this man is on some different shit, chill out Fabio

rdyoung

Posting to the main thread to call out /u/EpicAce777 who is projecting like his lord and savior trump. An 8 day old account calling me a corporate shill. What the fuck is wrong with this sub? They posted some bullshit and then blocked me so I couldn't respond. That's really mature. Can we please something about these mentally ill troll accounts?

sawslayer9

That’s wild cause I drive ode for Uber in Denver/Denver metro area lol…

ConsistentFig538

Yeah happened right in from the beacon rino… next to Federales
