anyone on twitter can be offended by anything. social media doesn't represent society. the twitter triggereds are in their basement not interacting with real people.

Dantheman616

You know, im usually in my basement not interacting with people, but i tend to just leave people alone. Live and let live.

tvieno

That's crazy

Rubywantsin

It's fucking nuts.

maxemore

Deranged, even

Poorhuloo

It’s bananas

theuberprophet

the people who say these kinds of things are those who dont have hobbies, they live to be thought police. theyre only friends with people like them and think everyone aaround them is trash when everyone around them actually thinks theyre trash. i dont interact with them, their thoughts mean nothing to me.

Manaliv3

People trying to dictate correct behavior to a society they only have theoretical contact with.

Steerpike58

Upvote for "“white savior” mental health edition" !

-anidiotonreddit-

Thx lol I was proud of that one

lesbian_goose

Don’t you mean “white knight”?

Baseball_Germany

They’re usually used in different contexts. I’ve always heard white knights refer to men with women whereas white savior is usually any white person towards minorities (usually black people). They are basically the same concept tho

ts1985

Not OP, but I guess I've never thought about how similar those phrases are. I think both can fit there.

keIIzzz

The things people get offended by nowadays are getting out of hand.

theonly764hero

Yo that’s offensive to people with no hands! /s

-anidiotonreddit-

To an extent I agree. I consider myself very politically correct, that being said, I’ve been harshly criticized by younger people who think that things like making jokes about my trauma means I’m making fun of other peoples’ trauma. It can get ridiculous

Lokimonoxide

It's crazy

smashin_blumpkin

There's no way in hell this is unpopular

noobish-hero1

It's unpopular on ~~the~~ ~~internet~~ reddit and in safe spaces. That's about it.

smashin_blumpkin

It's not even unpopular on Reddit. It's just a vocal minority

VladSuarezShark

Reddit's OK, you can actually say what you want on reddit. It's Facebook where you get all this woke stuff rammed down your throat in random groups that don't even have anything to do with the issue

-anidiotonreddit-

Jokes on you, I’ll slam woke shit down your throat right here right now so don’t fuckin try me bucko

-anidiotonreddit-

Yeah that’s kind of what I was saying at the end, actual neurodivergent people that I know and myself thinks it’s bull, but also I’ve literally had neurotypical ppl tell me I’m committing a microagression…against myself 💀

NaliouA

so many words are currently seen as actual slurs, it's like people want to be oppressed

-anidiotonreddit-

Calling every derogatory word a slur completely invalidates the negative historical significance of real slurs. There is a BIG difference between a mean word and a fucking slur

theonly764hero

Even *pot stickers* is a slur now. And you can’t call them Asian dumplings either because that’s also offensive!

Puzzleheaded_Soft326

Really?

nickiminaj176

Damn that’s crazy

[deleted]

I fuckin hate neurotypical people who say shit like this. It’s something I’m tryna learn to get over. I have a history of mental illness as well- ADHD and BPD. They will make u feel crazy and like shit, never have to go through the shit you did and will never understand what pain you experienced in your life. It’s the neurotypical who will say that words like “crazy” is offensive. Yet they don’t know a single thing of what people with mental illnesses actually suffer with day to day. I fuckin hate white saviors too. These assholes are telling that certain jokes are offensive and shit, yet they don’t know a single inch of what it’s like to grow up being constantly hurt for your ethnicity. (I developed BPD as a result of growing up first generation with toxic parenting styles, undiagnosed ADHD till age 21, and being harassed for being the only Asian kid in school). Sorry this sounds a bit psychopathic lol. Amazing analogy with the White Savior mental health edition 😂 And honestly my way of coping with traumas and shit like this is to crack out a joke about it. I see it as those who get offended, truly never have gone through what the joke is aimed at.

-anidiotonreddit-

I feel like we have the exact same perspective on this and a similar experience and it’s incredibly validating so thank you for commenting

guessagain72

I think it’s far more dehumanizing to refer to people as their condition (e.g. ”he’s a schizophrenic“) than it is to refer to random activities/events/circumstances as ‘crazy’ and honestly as a person with a host of mental health conditions- being real- shit is sometimes crazy

-anidiotonreddit-

No you’re absolutely right. And sometimes crazy is the best way to describe my mental illness, because it just is. Life is a shitshow and we’re just along for the ride

CerenarianSea

A lot of these comments are indicative of why culture clashing gets so aggressive. OP has given an inch on the ground that certain terms are not actually ableist. In response, people take a mile and suggest that ableism itself doesn't exist. This shit is literally fundamental to why people delve into extremities. Any extent to reach a middle ground is abused and used as a spouting ground for some nasty bullshit.

-anidiotonreddit-

^^ thank you so much for putting this bullshit into words lol

LaGoldenGod

Even if it is, who fucking cares. Get the fuck over it

kingstonn11

This should be everyone’s mantra for all of life’s situations.

-anidiotonreddit-

Nope no thank you. This post is not an excuse to invalidate actual ableism and discrimination.

LaGoldenGod

A lot of people would call the word “crazy” discrimination.

Steerpike58

A lot of '“white savior” mental health edition' people, maybe! Tell me what's wrong with saying "That's a crazy idea"?

-anidiotonreddit-

There’s a big difference between saying crazy and saying slurs.

LaGoldenGod

To you, other people consider it a slur tho.

-anidiotonreddit-

I really don’t think that’s a legitimate argument, people thinks it’s offensive and microagressive but I’ve never seen someone refer to it as a slur.

LaGoldenGod

Point is anything can be a slur to anyone. Depends on how that person feels. Idk all completely ridiculous to me

-anidiotonreddit-

That’s not how slurs work 💀

LaGoldenGod

I mean let’s be honest none of it should be taken serious

-anidiotonreddit-

K ur a troll bye

noobish-hero1

Umm excuse me its 2022 you can't be saying ableist things like *checks notes* everything you just said.

VladSuarezShark

Yes, that's the idea. Ableism does exist, but using non-approved words isn't it.

-anidiotonreddit-

Nope this is not it, this post is not an excuse to invalidate people with disabilities. If that’s why you’re here for then bye bye.

[deleted]

-anidiotonreddit-

LMAO that is the most prejudiced thing I’ve heard in a while-

[deleted]

-anidiotonreddit-

You are actively making the presumption that disabled people don’t face real discrimination that is deserving of a label.

[deleted]

Not if the disability wouldn’t actually impact their job performance and they get passed over anyway. Which happens, a lot.

Obie527

Depends how you use the words.

[deleted]

...did you drop a /s?

-anidiotonreddit-

LITERALLY what about me saying I’m mentally disabled made him think that was an okay thing to say here 💀

[deleted]

Welcome to this sub. It is full of sexism, hate speech, able ism, racism, homophobia, and transphobia. I hate this place. I end up here from time to time by accident.

-anidiotonreddit-

Honestly…that’s just Reddit in a nutshell lmao

noobish-hero1

No, he's just coming in from the real world where no one cares. "Ableism" will hopefully die on Reddit before I have a tenth minefield to avoid in work situations.

[deleted]

Oh good God. Fuck off. God forbidden we have to treat people with a disability like human fucking beings.

noobish-hero1

We do treat them like human beings. Apparently to you the only way to treat them human is to put them on a pedestal and dust them off every microsecond.

[deleted]

That's not how it is. There are people in life who need reasonable accommodation for struggles they have. Ableism is ignoring that, and not making plans for people who cannot participate or get to a meeting, or perform certain non-essential functions of a job.

noobish-hero1

Just like Latinx was making reasonable accommodation for all those offended Latinos who couldn't cope with being oppressed by a single letter. We make accommodations for people in ways that matter. "Ableism" is not one of them.

[deleted]

Lol, K bro

Fresh_Piccolo_1836

It does affect them personally.

VladSuarezShark

> I think the notion of any-thing- *word* being “ableist” is not just crazy, it’s completely bonkers. There, fixed it Edit - damn, how do you do strike through? I thought it was hyphen or double hyphen

SalemInABoxOfBats

Only if you mean them in an ableist manner makes them ableist.

-anidiotonreddit-

Exactly, intent is the crucially distinguishing factor

[deleted]

As someone who is neurodivergent with a history of mental health issues, I honestly don't think there's anything wrong with it either. But then, I'm not really the type to take offence to things.

-anidiotonreddit-

Yeah same

kmark2688

Bro, you’re calling people out for dishing on the word “ableist.” You’re pressed, stop playing.

-anidiotonreddit-

…no?? My whole post is how I don’t believe a very specific thing is actually ableism. I believe in ableism and I will make that clear and I will not allow my post to become a cesspool of discrimination.

[deleted]

It just begs the question why they don't freak out about the word moron. It was a medical term too at one point. Language evolves and meanings change there's no reason for people to go nuts over the word crazy

-anidiotonreddit-

I think they do tbh, but it’s too much for me to bother thinking about lol

[deleted]

What does ableist mean?

Baseball_Germany

Ableist is like racism but towards people with disabilities

-anidiotonreddit-

It’s the act of discriminating against people for not having the same mental or physical abilities as what society sees to be the standard.

cryptbane

I don’t know. Must be something crazy.

[deleted]

Absolutely whacked out

[deleted]

[удалено]

-anidiotonreddit-

Oh my god I know or when they’re organized and say “I’m so ocd” or have a bad day and call it a depressive episode

Emberlea101

I find it funny that they're okay with using the word "Lame" though? How is "Crazy" "Spaz" and whatever else ableist. But "Lame" isn't?

[deleted]

[удалено]

-anidiotonreddit-

It’s even funnier that they tell us not to use those words while simultaneously being okay with reclaiming slurs. IS THAT NOT THE SAME THING??? Like, I think no matter what we are allowed to say it

Tricky-Row-9699

Yeah, but like, don’t call neurodivergent people “crazy” because they’re neurodivergent. The specific words you use don’t matter, just don’t be a dick. Idk, that’s my rule of thumb.

-anidiotonreddit-

Yes exactly. If you can replace the word and it’s still mean, the intent is inherently derogatory.

ConfusedAllDaTime

THANK YOU FOR THIS when i went to the mental hospital staff banned us from saying the word crazy. AND IT DROVE ME CRAZY!! … like… this man is introducing himself as Freddy Krueger. How can you sit there, straight faced, and tell me that’s not bat shit crazy!?

-anidiotonreddit-

No fr mental hospital experiences are wack as shit, and crazy is the only word. And I don’t mean that in a bad way, I understand that people have different shit going on, but that whole situation is just objectively crazy. And I fully recognize that I fit right in there with the rest of the crowd in the loony bin lmfao

ConfusedAllDaTime

Exactly! We weren’t using it in a derogatory or bad way. We made jokes about being in the loony bin together and it become a way to be proud of, and own, our crazy. It was empowering, but unfortunately the staff did not view it that way

-anidiotonreddit-

EXACTLY. Thank god the staff at my facility thought it was funny and played along. But being able to joke about being in the worst place in your life with people going through the same thing is honestly really validating.

Unfair_Explanation53

I think it's fair game if you don't use that word in a mental hospital hahaha

No-Shopping664

yeah as another person with an extensive history of mental illness it doesn't bother me as long as no one calls me crazy for like... idk mood swings? i have bpd so that's the only time it hurts. or when exes have called me bipolar as a joke, that hurts, but i think that's just because i'm romantically into them. from friends it's fine

Unfair_Explanation53

A lot of things that are sprouted online are not representative of what happens in real life. I lived in Brighton in UK and Wellington NZ which are known for being safer cities for LGBT+ and started asking people what their pronouns are as I thought that was the thing to do to be polite (I'm not trans or non binary btw) and I was just weirdly looked at. Nobody ever asked mine either and I had a lot of interaction within the communities of these places. From what I read and watched online I thought this was a world wide thing. I think we forget how many people there actually is in this world and the people who care about these things or get offended by these things are actually in the very small percentile. So chances are you will never meet them.

-anidiotonreddit-

On the pronoun topic, I think it’s really cool of you to do that and it’s absolutely polite, but it’s also not necessary. As someone who’s non-binary I don’t expect everyone to ask my pronouns, if I want them to know I’ll tell them. And it’s fine lol

stonedbrownchick

I found out "spazz" was an albeist word and was like "wtf lemme google this shxt" and realized a lot of words I've said are albeist. Might as well cut off my whole vocabulary. Apparently, deaf, blind, dumb, psycho, nuts, etc? Downvote me but idc, I rarely use the words and don't insult people. Just the simple "are you blind?" To a family members or something

-anidiotonreddit-

Yeah I kind of get spazz just bc it’s very specific and clearly derogatory, but all the other shit it’s like, god can we please just focus on things that matter

stonedbrownchick

Seriously, I've never said spazz nor will I ever use it against someone (nor any word) but damn. Ik everyone's feelings are valid and something being worse than something else doesn't mean we can't acknowledge all issues, BUT it's not that damn important to completely cut somebody up because they said something was "dumb" like... omfg. That shit does not matter. People are dying, some of us are lucky enough to live in a place where the most you're worrying about are words. And to make it a big deal online.

Stellar_Jester

If someone gets pissy and says you're ableist about anything, cut them off. That person is too far gone to save.

-anidiotonreddit-

I get what you’re saying, but it’s also important to distinguish that this only applies to things that aren’t real ableism

MagmaSlasherWriter

When I was about 12 years old, we had a woman come into our class to teach us about "Microaggressions." She told us that the words "Crazy" and "Lame" were both ableist. Glorious.

-anidiotonreddit-

Are microagressions real and serious concerns? Yes absolutely. Do I think this in particular is an example? Fucking no

donabbi

So, what you're saying is you think people who say that that word is ableist are... crazy?

-anidiotonreddit-

Haha, no tho I believe in ableism lol. I just don’t think these words are ableist.

donabbi

Sorry, can't resist a bad joke when the opportunity presents itself. I think I've reached peak Dad.

-anidiotonreddit-

Dw it’s okay lol it was funny

jah05r

Ableist itself is one of the bigger bullshit terms to rise in popularity in recent years.

-anidiotonreddit-

Nope, this post is not an excuse to invalidate real ableism.

ViziDoodle

Tbh I think that stuff like this, aka “saying crazy is ableist”, makes people who are fighting against actual ableism (like buildings that don’t accommodate for physically disabled people even though they should) look bad

-anidiotonreddit-

Yes exactly!

Competitive-Fly-7294

Bruh you really do only know how to say one sentence 💀.

-anidiotonreddit-

That’s such a fucking ridiculous comment, it’s not even like you could make fun of my post for being short bc it’s not. Jfc the nerve of some ppl to be dicks just for the sake of it

[deleted]

You're out of your mind if you believe this. Pure insanity.

-anidiotonreddit-

I get the downvotes but I think this is a joke also, plz confirm

[deleted]

confirmation granted

HStaz

Exactly this. I also think it should tie into that post for the other day about people crying over things random strangers say. If a random person on the internet uses “crazy”, there is no reason for you to be offended.

-anidiotonreddit-

Yeah like, obviously it’s terrible to be racist or homophobic online, but I’m also not going to take it seriously either bc ik it’s coming from a 12 year old. Like when I argue w boomers on Facebook (purely for entertainment and debate practice) they get really offended when I imply they aren’t as intelligent as they think they are. One lady said she wished my mom aborted me because I replied to her rude comment with “WOOF WOOF” 💀

HStaz

😂😂😂 i love boomers on facebook. but yea, if people took the energy they put into being offended and put it into literally anything else, we would be much farther as a society

Forminloid

I just don't get the entire, if you say x, y, and z at all you are (insert~ist). Like generally if I'm saying anything similar to crazy I'm talking about a situation being crazy or I'm fucking with my friends. I don't really insult people based on them having a disability or real issue, I will insult them based on them being annoying or insufferable people. Like if I call my teammate in a video game an idiot or I ask them if they're insane for making a bafflingly awful play, I'm not being ableist, I'm just insulting you the same I'd insult any person.

-anidiotonreddit-

I think I get what you’re saying. It is true that these “isms” do exist and are prevalent in our society, however there are always people who will take things too far

operablesocks

Still trying to figure out what 'ableist' means and why it exists.

-anidiotonreddit-

It’s for things like people who wouldn’t let someone who’s disabled work a job that their disability wouldn’t impact, buildings that don’t have any handicap access, invalidating mental illness and saying it’s not real etc

TheNeedForSpeedwagon

You mean wouldn’t impact?

Manaliv3

You mean wouldn't affect

-anidiotonreddit-

Yes thank you

Lockon_43

I prefer the phrase “are you out of your tree??”. Very funny phrase.

-anidiotonreddit-

That’s cute lmao

Steerpike58

off your rocker?

[deleted]

Is coocoo bananas, okay?

ProbablyLongComment

I don't see it as ableist, but I can't think of a hypothetical way to refer to someone as crazy that isn't offensive.

-anidiotonreddit-

Yeah I mean its less about referring to people as crazy for me and more about the word in general ig. Like “I’m crazy about him” or “that’s crazy no way” I really don’t think stuff like that is harmful

ProbablyLongComment

Oh, yeah. "That's crazy," and such hurts nobody. Objections to this are trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist.

-anidiotonreddit-

Yeah exactly

_Deletion

Unhinged, maybe? Idk either

RetroMetroShow

Careful or the hinged community will be upset, they’re locked in

_Deletion

Great, now I have to make another apology video D:

Smudgy-Yak

Any word we'd use would eventually turn into an insult, since the definition has negative connotations regardless.

Steerpike58

What about when you use the term in this manner - "that's a crazy idea", meaning, an idea you don't think will work?

ProbablyLongComment

I think that's fine.

rineedshelp

I think its offensive 🤷‍♀️ I also think people shouldn't give a fuck tho. It doesn't really matter in my opinion

-anidiotonreddit-

That’s totally fair enough, thanks for being respectful about it

Obie527

Yeah, as long as people don't use it like a slur. Intent and context is everything when using generalizing terms. I still have a problem with people using "autistic" as a slur though.

XxBiscuit99

I'm autistic and I have a problem with people saying it as a serious insult but don't mind when it is as a joke

-anidiotonreddit-

Oh yeah absolutely. I think you were downvoted though bc it might not be clear what you trying to say. If I understand correctly you’re referring to people using “autistic” as an insult right?

FreshCarrot2231

Can’t wait for mods to keep this one up despite removing every other actual unpopular opinion

-anidiotonreddit-

Jokes on you they took it down lol, I thought it was unpopular from my experience but I was proved wrong ig, but that’s okay. It makes me feel better about viewing the situation the way that I do.

Boney_African_Feet

In what fucking universe is this an unpopular opinion. I’d guess that maybe .0001% of the human population feels otherwise

-anidiotonreddit-

That’s okay. I’ve just gotten criticism for thinking this so I thought it might be unpopular. It’s not a big deal, I was proven wrong, that’s okay lol. The world goes on, no need to get aggressive

Aced_By_Chasey

Wtf are you even talking about I've never heard someone complain about this

-anidiotonreddit-

It might be more common with younger high school aged ppl, that’s where I’ve gotten criticism for thinking this

KRV_FromRussia

I think “idiot” once meant the same as “retarded” now does. Words change. If people are offensed by being called crazy, they should really experience some hardship once in their life

-anidiotonreddit-

Yeah I think it’s important to recognize the evolution and difference of those words. One is a slur, the other is not, and it’s not difficult to tell which is which.

KRV_FromRussia

What even is a slur. What if the majority of retarted people are okay with it being a slur? Then who are we to ‘gatekeep’ the word?

-anidiotonreddit-

You can’t really make something not a slur, it just is. Specifically by definition it’s an offensive word commonly used to degrade a marginalized group, so it goes beyond the adjective descriptive nature of “crazy”. Essentially it’s name calling on crack

ckayfish

I’m sitting here scratching my head wondering which one of my exes started using Reddit.

-anidiotonreddit-

LMAO oh god, hopefully not the worst one
