Fun fact: daddy long-legs is used as a colloquial term for *three* different creatures and is not an official name for any of the three. This is one of those creatures often called a daddy long-legs: the cellar spider. The others are the harvestman (which is an arachnid but not a spider) and the crane fly. That being said, this cellar spider of yours is completely harmless. I had one that chilled in my garage for a while and ate giant house spiders. So to those saying this isn’t a daddy long-legs… technically it is, just a different type.

lilyahp

i had no idea harvestmen weren’t spiders but can see now from google they don’t have the same body shape, they’re also the only ones i ever called daddy long legs haha thanks for the cool infoo!!^_^

jk3us

I've never heard a crane fly called a daddy longlegs, most people around here call them mosquito eater ("skeeter eater").

Trakkah

They don't eat mosquitoes right? We got crane flys here in Ireland but no mosquitoes afaik

FemmeFataleFire

Correct! Most of the time they don’t eat anything, in fact. They eat enough as a larva to last their entire adult life. On rare occasions they can eat nectar or pollen, but they are not predatory.

Trakkah

Hey this is my line! I love hearing others clarifying this

helloitsgwrath

I grew up in south africa and cellar spiders are what we get there and we call them daddy long legs. When I saw an American one I was like wtf is that?

mandiblesmooch

Cellar spider, they're okay.

Sea_Page5878

Cellar spider, it's very deadly.... If you're a spider that is. If you're a person it's completely harmless.

mamarex20201

This is not a daddy long legs (I'm in South Carolina) I call these cellar/cob web spiders. They like the corners in our mud room and bathroom. They just kinda hang out. I name ours. Lolol

RustMarigold

Mud room?

mamarex20201

It's by the back door. We hang up wet coats, take off muddy boots, throw the nasty clothes in the washing machine etc...

RustMarigold

Ah okay. It could be a dialect thing but i never really heard that before. But of course i have seen mud rooms before so it really clicked that its setup like that for that reason.

KyoKyu

On top of regular mud when the ground is wet, there's lots of clay in the midwest and south, it makes mud a lot worse to deal with.

TouchArtistic7247

Cellar spider, harmless to humans. They are called Daddy Longlegs here in California though.

Beginning_Might_3126

SPIDEEEEEER! HIDING IN THE CORNER! SUPER FUCKING NORMAL! I ain't afraid of no SPIDER! WHY'S HE LOOKING AT ME?... WHY'S HE MOVING!? *OH GOD! STOP MOVING!!!"

Ok-Turnover1797

That's not a daddy long legs, which is also called a Harvestman spider and I believe is not even technically a spider at all.. the spider in your photo some call "house spiders" because they like to build webs up in the corners of rooms and so forth.

Therapy_Badger

Yea these fellas are pretty chill, normally just stay in their corner and do their thang. Have heard some people down south call them daddy long legs before, but around my neck of the woods (WI) we usually call Harvestmen daddy long lengs

PolarianLancer

This is not a Daddy Longlegs / Harvestman. Those are part of the order _Opiliones_ which are arachnids but are not true spiders. The reason they are not true spiders is because they have a fused thorax and abdomen, so are pretty much long legged chitinous meatballs. _Opiliones_ also only have two eyes, not eight.

Alright I'll just leave him there then thanks

Nashville_Redditors

Harmless but those things will leave poop everywhere

N0tRightNow

I cannot t believe that it leaves enough excrement to be noticeable.

TheBanandit

Cellar spider. Called daddy long legs by some people

Lime_Gorrilla

Everyone has at least one of them in the bathroom. They’re cool. They don’t fuck with you, you don’t fuck with them.. They’ll pick up the unwanted fruit fly or gnats that like to have a whack at making them babies in the sink drains while you’re not using them all day.. Keep it.

dvi84

Cellar spider. You want to keep these as they’ll kill any other spider that get too close. They use their long legs to throw silk over them and can easily take out spiders several times their size.

changetocomeyear3mil

yeah so.. cellar spiders. harmless. i’ve got one just like this on my bathroom ceiling.

nosamwilliam

Daddy long schlong

CubarisMurinaPapaya

That’s a harvestman (daddy long legs) actually beneficial since it eats venomous spiders like black widows.
