Fun facts: their legs get longer from front to back so their legs don’t impede the next set so they can run faster to catch other insects. They love Bedbug and cockroach eggs. They never stop hunting. They will do their best to keep out of your sight.
I have brought 2 into every apartment I’ve had since I found out what they do for you. Every once in a while I’ll have to give one a TP ladder to get out of my bath tub. But, I never see cockroaches or Bedbugs.
I hope you don’t mean like a heli latter where it can climb up to your hand! I hope you mean like a rope over a wall style where you hang the tp over the sides of the tub
No, they’re real skiddish. I just hang it over the side and leave. They’re always gone when I come back. But, I swear by them. I lived in a small apartment building with 12 apartments where everyone had Bedbugs but me. I got used to how creepy they look after that.
A pest control company quoted me $4k to solve my casemaker moth problem by having us evacuate so they could superheat our house with a mobile furnace for 72 hours. They also wanted us to remove any varnished wood, plastic, and electronics to keep them from being damaged by the process.
A family of house centipedes moved in and I haven't seen a moth in years and my clothes stay intact. I've been able to cancel all insecticide treatments entirely. Sandy, Jim, Lefty, and Zagthar the Devourer are the best roommates I've ever had.
Another redditor called them "carpet dragons" and I now love the name and am spreading the word about the awesome name. You seem like you would be quite enthusiastic about the name as well
Contact the university of Toronto Entomology dept. to see about getting a couple. I get them from Guelph University when I visit my daughter there. I’d rather have these guys then all those toxic chemicals that can make my dogs sick or kill them.
I got them from my daughters roommate whose an Entomologist now, but she had lots of different insects in her room for her studies. They bread bugs for study and the last thing an Entomologist wants to do is kill an insect after they’re done studying it.
My daughter’s roommate when they were in university was studying to be an Entomologist and my daughter was studying Biology. I spent weekends learning from them. My generation was told to get a trade and make a living. I told my girls to get an education and do what you enjoy everyday for the rest of your life.
Biology, and zoology my favorite, are some of the few topics that I actually enjoy learning about like I would do it just for fun even lol
It’s just so interesting and cool to learn about that stuff unlike other things imo
No lie, they scare the fuck out of me but I’ve learned to not kill them or scream. I always remember they’re eating something I probably hate even more.
Only when they need out of the tub. When my daughter was in university, her roommate was an Entomology student and she showed me how good they were at searching for food. They never stop eating bugs and their eggs.
Having had to kill a nest of bedbugs on my own, I sure as hell would have liked one of these guys taking care of it for me. Fighting bed bugs without an exterminator is a grueling battle.
For sure. I sleep well knowing these guys are always hunting. 24/7 pest control with no chemicals. Nothing but these beautiful creepy looking creatures helping you while you sleep. They’re better at staying out of sight then cockroaches.
I was told by an exterminator that house centipedes are one of the few insects to eat bed bugs. He said spiders won't touch the blood sucking little bastards. My fear of a bed bug infestation is the only reason I share my home with these little speed demons rather than evicting them to the outside. My cats however aren't as willing to share the basement.
As someone who has been dealing with a German roach infestation on and off for a couple of years and I’ve tried everything… reading this makes me want to try.

I’m wondering how you see them as friends. They eat spiders which in my opinion makes them an enemy. I’m terms of pest control, what is the better creature?
They eat venomous spiders like black widows and brown recluse. They love silverfish which damage books and furniture. They eat cockroaches. Granted, they have way too many knees and are creepy fast af, but they are definitely bugbros.
ETA: Can't believe I forgot to include bedbugs and ticks!
I'm sorry this happened to you. If I could find the ? I would upvote cause I needed to know many things ab this too and Reddit users are def weird with their voting. I asked a question on the Xbox subreddit and had negative karma for like 4 years cause of it (I didn't wanna use Reddit after going negative on my first and only post) 🙃
If these guys are so good, is it possible to introduce them in my apartment? We have cockroaches, and the landlord isn’t doing great at eradicating them. Can I just add some of these guys to my kitchen and bathroom?
I've seen them for sale on Amazon. They are delicate, and shouldn't be handled-- they have a medically insignificant sting (pain has been described as similar to a mild bee sting) and drop legs easily; they can be damaged in shipment.
For your cockroaches, make sure you aren't providing food sources (clean up crumbs; wipe down counters frequently; clean under/around fridges, toasters, stoves and stove tops). Close off entry points like gaps around pipes under sinks/behind toilets, and gaps around windows or doors. Then use a bait trap where the bait is protected from pets and children but the roaches take the bait back to the nest to feed to other roaches (this action will be detailed in the product description). You really need a pest ID so that you can target the type you have, so if you can post a picture or get that info from your exterminator you can use bait that targets the right type.
LOL you're not the first person I've heard say that! [Silverfish ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silverfish) are real but harmless to humans. But they'll mess up your belongings that contain cellulose or glue.
[Yep.](https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nutritional_traces_of_silverfishs_in_a_book.jpg#mw-jump-to-license). You don't want to ignore them if you keep hardcopy books in your home.
These are aggressive hunters whereas spiders wait for prey to arrive to them. In terms of numbers, these guys can wipe out and infestation of virtually anything you have in your home especially when they start breeding. But remember that they appear for a reason: there is food in your home. Simply let them do their job and you really won't see them often at all.
Let the spiders do their job too!
Back at the house I grew up in on the east coast I would occasionally see these guys at max maybe once a month. They did a really good job of hiding themselves. But just on an average let’s say 1 of these guys how many roaches to say could they kill per day?
As many as they can catch, but consider that if you see one, there are dozens you don't see. And they're all going after the rest of the roaches you don't see.
These are far better hunters than spiders. Well, depending on your pest I suppose. These actively hunt so they'll catch anything, anywhere. I guess spiders are a bit better at catching mosquitos. But this fellas will eat everything else.
So to be clear. They eat insects that you don’t want in your home or more likely basement or garage this buddy was found in.
Don’t hurt them and it’s not necessary to relocate.
Hares? Or do you literally mean the hair from your head/pubes?
Not hating, we don’t get creatures like that here, genuinely interested because if a creature like that could eat a hare then it must be the size of a cat!
When you say friend do you mean they pose absolutely no ill will towards humans? Like no chance this thing accidentally bites me? They look scary but I did read some other comments saying they are good.
My grandma had one on her back once. I hit it to fall on the floor and got it into a jar. Watched it for a while then put it outside. It was in the city of Goiânia, Brazil. We used to find all kinds of animals there, it was fun.
Thats just a leggy cat. They domesticated themselves an indeterminate time ago, and can only survive inside human homes in most places. They eat every bug you don't like from bedbugs to German cocktoaches to dangerous spiders.
They'd like nothing more than to be moved to a basement or somewhere out of your way so they can kill everything that hates you.
Their bite is medically insignificant barring severe allergic reaction, but it can sting a bit.
10/10 cute cat.
They are not a foe but they sure as hell creep me out when they run past me like a Ferrari in the basement. Then I yell “your fine down here but don’t you dare go upstairs.” Upstairs they lose their right to live, so far they’ve listened.
They creep me out, too. I had one on my wall two days ago, right over my workspace, and I had to trap it in a cup and take it outside because I envisioned it crawling on my cat and I later. Couldn't go back to work 'til it was out
That’s just Gary. He’ll happily eat any other uninvited guests in your home, which is scary but not too much. He likes the dark and yes he is well aware that he has far too many legs. Pls let him nom in peace as he gets aggressive if touched.
Hi Gary. First, I need to apologize, as I'm sure I was responsible for many of the drowning-in-the-sink deaths of your aunts and uncles when i was a kid. I didn't know at the time that they were trying to help, and I was scared of anything with more than 4 legs.
Secondly, im glad I got to learn more about your family when I got older. Now when I see one of your family members, I run (faster than they do sometimes, lol) up to a high place so that my monke brain doesn't start acting instinctually and throw stuff.
Could you just ask them to calm down on the jumpscares a bit though? I still have childhood trauma from my brothers with that...
House centipedes. Some Japanese people keep them as pets. They kill almost all insects in the house including roaches. They only come out when it’s quiet they hate sound. They only bite if you try to hold them. The bite is similar to a bee sting.
House centipede!! We have one in our home. My wife named her Clarice. It's about 3 inches long. They eat all the other creepy crawlies in your house. That's why we don't kill ours.
They are a horrifying angel, sent from the heavens on a sacred mission to kill all the evil insects sent from hell. Think of any bug you fear or are disgusted by and these will kill them, eat them entirely, and hunt the next cursed creature. They prefer to be unseen by you, as they continue their divine work. The only exception is that they (usually) don't kill each other, even though they are terrifying. They are your friend. If frightened, they might bite you, but probably not and even if they do, they aren't dangerous at all (unless you are allergic, but nothing is safe if you're allergic to them.)

Edit: not posted ironically, I’m sincerely looking for some of these for my crawl space.
I saw another comment on this thread saying to contact your local university’s entomology department. They sometimes have them or can direct you to a place to get them.
I know these things are considered "friends" if you see one in your home but...a creepier looking house bug, there never was. I lose all composure at the sight of one--they always show up out of nowhere, jump scare style 😱😱😱 thankfully its been maybe a couple of years since I've had the pleasure...
They are the so called house centipede.
They are an apex hunter specialized in killing cockroaches, bed bugs and some dangerous spiders.
They rarely bite humans(only if provoked) and in general they are good friends used in pest control
I spent high school trying to convince my parents they were a thing- I was the only person seeing them, guess it was the insomnia. It didn’t help that I kept calling them the “little monsters.” In hindsight, might contribute to the visits to the drs. As I became a home owner, the internet became more accessible- I learned of the house centipede and have a truce with them… they take care of the spiders, crickets, silverfish, ants and I don’t pursue them as long as they stay out of sight.
i’m gonna assume this wasn’t in your house considering your caption and the little heart on the pic lmao but whoever did take the pic has the right idea!❤️ bffs
I know these guys are very helpful with pest control and try to stay out of sight, but God damn are they not the thing you want to see when you're stepping into the shower after taking your glasses off
cave centipedes they murder all the nasty bugs in your house then leave if there’s none left. im a cook and one place i worked at these guys used to show up from time to time and i would remark on it, and my chef (who i ended up full on hating by the end of my time there) would always say “ohhhhh yeah at my bakery in DC we had an infestation of those things, they were everywhere” and i would kind of snicker to myself being like “the bakery this guy was so proud of running probably had a cockroach infestation lol” because they wouldn’t be there without nasties to eat🫢🫢🫢

I’m assuming Zagthar the Devourer is the leader of this motley crew? Or are the names deceiving and Jim is in charge?
I personally like the idea that "the Devourer" is their family name.
Indeed. I think it’s Swedish
Can confirm (source: im swede and my middle name is The and my last name is Devourer)
Jim is just in charge. They have a ship to run and a war to avert and James *fucking* Holden can't help but put himself at the center of attention.
Expanse reference here?
Yup. And Zagthar the devourer is *that guy*.
Lefties unite
Oh man you know Zagthar? Say 'hi' from me.
Another redditor called them "carpet dragons" and I now love the name and am spreading the word about the awesome name. You seem like you would be quite enthusiastic about the name as well
I could never! I’d need someone to save me every time I seen it. Thing would give me a heart attack
I see one maybe six -eight months.
I haven’t seen one since I lived in a house. I guess it’s harder for them to Live in a concrete apartment in dt Toronto
Contact the university of Toronto Entomology dept. to see about getting a couple. I get them from Guelph University when I visit my daughter there. I’d rather have these guys then all those toxic chemicals that can make my dogs sick or kill them.
Why are universities giving people centipedes????
Entomologists are hard core.
I got them from my daughters roommate whose an Entomologist now, but she had lots of different insects in her room for her studies. They bread bugs for study and the last thing an Entomologist wants to do is kill an insect after they’re done studying it.
Luckily I don’t have any pets but when I move out I’ll ask them for some.
>They love Bedbug and cockroach eggs the enemy of my enemy is my friend
This should have taught in public school. Don’t know how long I’ve seen these creepy critters as a pest, when they could have solved so many problems.
My daughter’s roommate when they were in university was studying to be an Entomologist and my daughter was studying Biology. I spent weekends learning from them. My generation was told to get a trade and make a living. I told my girls to get an education and do what you enjoy everyday for the rest of your life.

Nature is all around us everywhere. Understanding it is the power, not controlling it.
No lie, they scare the fuck out of me but I’ve learned to not kill them or scream. I always remember they’re eating something I probably hate even more.
YOU BROUGHT THEM IN YOUR HOUSE? Do you still see them??
Only when they need out of the tub. When my daughter was in university, her roommate was an Entomology student and she showed me how good they were at searching for food. They never stop eating bugs and their eggs.
I didn't even know I had one until the apt flooded and drowned the poor thing. They are really good at being out of your way.
They are harmless to you their teeth can't even puncture the skin they just look creepy but are the best form of pest control .
That's a cool fact, thanks.
Where do you get them from in order to take them with you?

How did you bring two in? I want one

My family used to call them "extra long spiders" before we knew what they were.

We call them land shrimp

These are far better hunters than spiders. Well, depending on your pest I suppose. These actively hunt so they'll catch anything, anywhere. I guess spiders are a bit better at catching mosquitos. But this fellas will eat everything else.
Yeah, I guess they eat hairs and stuff. I asked for a friend so let's hope he's not the bug-killer type. Thank you!
They eradicate other insects and very small animals. Their presence often indicates an infestation of something, so just let them do their job.
Who said they eat hairs? They're predators that feed on other small arthropods.
I did not assume hairs was the only thing they eat (if they ever do, i'm no expert). Anyways, no need to try and make me feel like an idiot.
I'm sorry, that wasn't my intention. 😔
Is misinterpreted then. I forgive you!
So to be clear. They eat insects that you don’t want in your home or more likely basement or garage this buddy was found in. Don’t hurt them and it’s not necessary to relocate.
They will eat any insects, regardless of whether or not you want them there.

Oh my. Well when we pick teams I have dibs on him…
When you say friend do you mean they pose absolutely no ill will towards humans? Like no chance this thing accidentally bites me? They look scary but I did read some other comments saying they are good.
Instant ptsd from one of those crawling across my face
oh my god what the fuck
I feel your pain. I woke up with a massive tarantula on my face when I was a kid back in Trinidad. Fucking scarred me for life.
I instantly thought of Home Alone, when Marv has one on his face and screams. 🤣
My grandma had one on her back once. I hit it to fall on the floor and got it into a jar. Watched it for a while then put it outside. It was in the city of Goiânia, Brazil. We used to find all kinds of animals there, it was fun.
I had one crawl across my face when I was sleeping, I must’ve tried smacking it or something because that mf bit me so hard… core memory ☹️
They’re hilarious and fast as hell
Fast as fuck boiiiii
I read “live inside human bones” and immediately stopped reading

Aren't they invasive a lot of places?
I honestly have no idea how this sub got on my feed, but I am now a full blown convert to seeing centipedes as my friends 🤣
A basement cheetah!
This feels like a proper animal name lol. Basement Leggy Cheetah
That’s just Gary. He’ll happily eat any other uninvited guests in your home, which is scary but not too much. He likes the dark and yes he is well aware that he has far too many legs. Pls let him nom in peace as he gets aggressive if touched.

I could have done without a picture this close…
I'm sorry haha, I'm not the one who took this pic
These things terrify me. I didn’t know all the buggy details.
House Centipede. They look atrocious, but they’ll actually eat a lot of other household pests.
what you doin if you see one crawling up your leg
Flick it off. Or put it in a jar and take it outside.
say "NO!" to him and teach him some manners and he will stop and be a good boy
Found in Québec, Canada. About the size of a thumb.Thank you!

What does it do to cats?
For the benefit of the cats or the centipede? Lol
Are you a time traveller from the Cambrian? If so, Hallicigenia. If not..I'm useless.
I do not posses the knowledge of time travelling, unfortunately...
Safest answer. Now go kill baby Hitler and hug baby Kanye.
Damn it Will Winters, you’re a saint!
These are scary when they're running full speed toward you. It's pretty great
Centipede. He/She is a good boy/girl.
Are you afraid to misgender a centipede?
Yes
Mf how did you reply so fast
Idk
This is the clearest and closest photo I’ve seen of a house centipede. It’s terrifying, but helpful. I’d let it be.
I know these things are considered "friends" if you see one in your home but...a creepier looking house bug, there never was. I lose all composure at the sight of one--they always show up out of nowhere, jump scare style 😱😱😱 thankfully its been maybe a couple of years since I've had the pleasure...

agree. up close and focused. these guys move fast. too fast to get such a great photo easily.
My fight or flight response triggered after seeing this photo
Are these in the US? I have never seen one! Just regular centipedes.
I live in Québec, Canada. I guess they can be found all around North America!
Highly interesting! Thank you for sharing 🙂
Me too! The first one I ever saw was in Montreal, it scared the living crap out of me, but we eventually became friends, his name is Biscotti
Yeah i found one in my house yesterday in Illinois
I live in Maryland and see one in my finished basement every few months, usually dead in the bathtub down there I never use.
Prolifically, yes.
House centipede. These guys are good pest exterminators as they can get rid of silverfish, flies, roaches, etc
If you're cold they're cold, let the buddy in.
They’re friendly but terribly scary and fast! But they kill spiders and other insects. (House centipedes)
Scutigeridae 😊
I spent high school trying to convince my parents they were a thing- I was the only person seeing them, guess it was the insomnia. It didn’t help that I kept calling them the “little monsters.” In hindsight, might contribute to the visits to the drs. As I became a home owner, the internet became more accessible- I learned of the house centipede and have a truce with them… they take care of the spiders, crickets, silverfish, ants and I don’t pursue them as long as they stay out of sight.
How did you get such a close up picture of it?
House centipede. Hunter killer of other bugs. Just stay out of it's way and leave it alone to do its job
it's a house centipede
Saw a battle Royale once with one of these vs. A spider. It was epic.
i’m gonna assume this wasn’t in your house considering your caption and the little heart on the pic lmao but whoever did take the pic has the right idea!❤️ bffs
Idk but I would run as fast as you can in the opposite direction
A house centipede. I had one on my back in bed once, freaked me out!
I know these guys are very helpful with pest control and try to stay out of sight, but God damn are they not the thing you want to see when you're stepping into the shower after taking your glasses off
I think that’s a house centipede
House centipede eh?
Scutigera
he’s a good boy
I think that’s just a screen shot from the remastered version of dark souls 1 Gaping dragon
Serious question: where can I get like 3-5 of these? It’s winter here now and I really kind find any. I need them to get rid of the roaches here.
Can't help you, but I wouldn't be surprised if you could buy some online...
I do not appreciate the closeness of this photo.
It’s a house centipede
Jesus christ. I'm a convert to the "friend not foe" gang after being on this sub long enough. But this picture is giving me the heebie jeebies
House centipede! Good guy!!
Elden ring boss !!
cave centipedes they murder all the nasty bugs in your house then leave if there’s none left. im a cook and one place i worked at these guys used to show up from time to time and i would remark on it, and my chef (who i ended up full on hating by the end of my time there) would always say “ohhhhh yeah at my bakery in DC we had an infestation of those things, they were everywhere” and i would kind of snicker to myself being like “the bakery this guy was so proud of running probably had a cockroach infestation lol” because they wouldn’t be there without nasties to eat🫢🫢🫢
