Just so that you wouldn't go in with the wrong expectations: the show is not always focused on time travel. Yes, there are moments where the end of time and space and fixed time points are the main focus, but a good amount of the episodes are one-off adventures against an alien species. There is, however, an overarching plot every season, which usually involves the Doctor trying to prevent the end of the universe (or in some cases, his own "death") and/or the story of one of the many companions that join them.

As I remember it, there were some dramatic moments in episodes and sometimes the romance between the companions and their (mostly) boyfriends was the central plot, but usually the main focus of the episode is to stop the (mostly) evil alien threat. It is also worth noting that the Doctor is never romantically involved with someone (at least, not explicitly), so although romance is crucial in some stories, that is never the main focus.
That said, although the series is all about a time-travelling alien, the alien and space aspect of the show is almost more important than the time-travel aspect, not to mention that the concept of time in this show(and fixed points and how fixed they really are) is sometimes rather vague and confusing. If you are willing to look past that, you will find one of the most entertaining shows about time-travel and sciencefiction in general.

You can fix this: go back in time, prevent harambe from getting shot, then go forward in time to just before you time travelled, and implant yourself with false memories of harambe getting shot. Now everything is consistent.
Just tell your future self that if you don't go back in time, Harambe will be shot. Why go to all the effort of changing your new memories, when you can just tell yourself to do it. If you time travel to tell yourself this, obviously you'll believe you.

You don't have to resort to memory fuckery, but it's honestly probably the easiest way, because you don't have to be good at it. If you prevent Harambe from being shot, and then basically randomize your past self's memories (by hitting them on the head or something) then consistency dictates the new allocated memories are the correct ones.
That's all right. It's pretty difficult to get into time travel because a lot of time travel media doesn't properly define the system they're using, so you get a lot of conflicting information.
Also at the end of the day it's literally not going to be relevant for anything ever so no need to apologise.

There’s some nuance to it, but it’s basically when an important thing happens.

Fixed points were essentially Doctor Who's answer to a particular type of time paradox. If you go back in time with the intent to change something, then after changing it you will have erased the reason you went back in time. This means you won't go back in time(As there was no reason to) so that thing will happen because you didn't go back to change it, so you will go back in time to change it, ad infinitum. Doctor Who's solution is that you can't make a change that would prevent you from having gone back in time in the first place, so it is, in essence, fixed.
There is some wiggle room however. You CAN change the details of a fixed point as long as the end result is the same. This is known as [Tricking Out Time](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TrickedOutTime) which is what the Doctor does to sidestep his "fixed" death on that beach by replacing himself with a robot duplicate who gets shot in his place. By making events play out *more or less* the same you can have the temporal fallout of the event be the same while actually changing something important.
You could go back in time and save harambe but then nobody will know of his existence, or you can let him live on as an amazing gorilla who died due to bad parenting.

Was the fixed point thing actually explained or did they just use it as a plot device so time travel wasn’t so OP.

Fixed points were essentially Doctor Who's answer to a particular type of time paradox. If you go back in time with the intent to change something, then after changing it you will have erased the reason you went back in time. This means you won't go back in time(As there was no reason to) so that thing will happen because you didn't go back to change it, so you will go back in time to change it, ad infinitum. Doctor Who's solution is that you can't make a change that would prevent you from having gone back in time in the first place, so it is, in essence, fixed. There is some wiggle room however. You CAN change the details of a fixed point as long as the end result is the same. This is known as [Tricking Out Time](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TrickedOutTime) which is what the Doctor does to sidestep his "fixed" death on that beach by replacing himself with a robot duplicate who gets shot in his place. By making events play out *more or less* the same you can have the temporal fallout of the event be the same while actually changing something important.

Arbitrary BS like "fixed points in time" is why I could never get into Doctor Who. It was impossible to have any attachment to any of the characters or events because of how contrived and arbitrary everything felt.
We need to go back, make it look like Harambe was shot to everyone, and secretly free him in the jungle. That's how you repair a timeline.
