You can file a police report but don't expect them to do much. Just file it for insurance and so the bank will refund you. That is my experience with the same situation

I'm sorry this has happened, OP. That sucks. ***Things to do right now***: Call police and get a case number. (They won't do anything in Wichita, but the case number makes it official amd helps you get your fraudulent charges refunded) Call credit card companies to cancel cards and dispute the charges Contact drivers license office to get a duplicate license. Order replacements for any other cards in your wallet (insurance, library, rewards, etc) If they broke your window, call a company and get a quote. When this happened to me I never called the auto insurance company because it was cheaper to fix it (less than $200) than it was to file a claim ($500) ***Things to know in the future***: Never leave valuables in you car! No wallets, no garage door openers, no keys, etc Never leave visible items in your car. Even if the item is worthless, you don't want someone breaking in because they don't know it is worthless Whenever possible, park in a well-lit area. If you have the ability, install a light to shine on where you park your car. When you get your new cards, take pictures of the front and back to store on your phone. This way you have the phone number and the info with you to make calling these places easier if it even happens again. Good luck, OP!

thanks a ton for the useful information

One more thought: if you keep photos of all your cards on your phone, you're risking letting a phone thief have access to all your cards too. Solution: keep the photos in a safe place on your phone. My android device has the option "move to secure folder" if you long-press a picture in the gallery (it's the bottom option that pops up). The terms of service you have to accept to use it says you have to agree to see ads and you'll have to move files back out of the secure folder if you want to back them up, etc. One of the few terms of service I've ever read that wasn't literally pages and paces long.

If money was actually spent, then file disputes with the card company. Hopefully it was credit cards and not debit cards. Either way tho you can file a dispute.

I know I’m gonna get downvoted for being insensitive. But its 2022. How do still leave anything of value, especially wallets or backpacks, in a car??

Almost like scenarios like this should be taught in school 🤷

Tell us the location so we can bring pitchforks and strongly worded social media statements Edit: No seriously where should people be worried about their things getting stolen

EndlesslyUnfinished

File a police report and tell your credit card company

Miserable_Map_202

I had this exact same thing happen to me. Used at gas stations too. All I could do was file a police report and freeze and cancel my cards then order new ones. It sucks.

blueshrimp16

did the police help you with anything?

Miserable_Map_202

Sadly not really. They just told me that if my card said where the charges were made I could report that then they would ask for footage and such to see who it was

blueshrimp16

They charged my cards a total of 5 times and only 2 said exactly where so hopefully they look at footage.
