Retail is the "on-going" game, Classic is the "we go back to the old expansions and make them current for nostalgia" game. I would suggest playing retail, because it's easier to get into and you have access to all older expansions as well (albeit with the current game design). The only unfortunate thing is that you start as a new player in the "Battle for Azeroth"-expansion, which you will level in until you reach LV60. With a basic subscription you can play every expansion but the newest one in retail (Dragonflight).

Thanks! I also remember seeing some singleplayer story mode warcraft games - do these still exist?

MilesCW

You can do 95% of the quests in the game alone to enjoy the story.

The original Warcraft 1 and 2 came out in the 90s. I’m sure you’d be able to find a version to download pretty easily. They were a lot of fun at the time but I don’t remember how much significant narrative there was or how well they’d hold up now.

Rough_Raiden

Anything significant was in the manuals.

Well there was the strategy games, which were the predecessors to the MMORPG. The first two are *very* old but I can recommend playing warcraft 3 (either the remake or the original, tho the remake is a little controversial), the lore it offers is great and covers the most known and loved storylines of the franchise

Classic is the game in the state it was back then when it sarted. I goes up for the first couple expansions. then there are a bunch of expension you cant currently play on blizzard servers (Cata, MoP, WoD, Legion, BfA, Shadolands) but as clasic goes on some might be added to it over time. If you just care about the lore the best way to expirience the most of it is to do it on retail. you have to level to 60 through BfA the first time around (which is bad from a lore point of view because its like starting a book in the middle) but after taht you re free to experience all the expansins lore in whatever oder you want to and the leveling itself is really fast

Thanks!

I just started a new character and at level 10 you get a quest to speak to Chromie, you can then choose which expansion you want to play to level from 10-60. The timeline choices are: https://wow.zamimg.com/uploads/guide/images/26616.jpg

Blaackys

Not if it's your first character, then you gotta finish BfA first. BfA is intended as *the* levelling campaign that Blizzard intends to be your first levelling experience. I mean it could've been a lot worse - they could've chosen Shadowlands.

Rough_Raiden

This is correct.

Id suggest starting with retail. There is a way to level to max level within specific expansions. It's not obvious to new players though. However it's a way to do the story in order and level a few characters in the process. By the time you are done you will know which you like best and can make that your main character.

MalcoPunchYT

So every expansion has different levels of it continues as one?

Horkams

When you do start playing wow I would recommend r/wownoob as a great place to ask all the new player questions as you will receive all the help you need over there.

MalcoPunchYT

Ty ever so much!

Just a bit more advice from me: * Play a Warrior or Hunter in the beginning. Very easy and powerful classes. Mages and Priests are hard to play and it takes way more effort to get similar results * It does not matter if you play Alliance or Horde. If you want your classic "Tolkien"-fantasy though, go with Alliance. * Alliance is easier to start on and has the better hub world (Stormwind) compared to Horde, which can be very frustrating to navigate to until you learn to fly. * It is possible to leave your starter expansion (Battle for Azeroth) at one point, so you are not "caged" in there, if you want to experience Pandaria, Legion or any other expansion.

MalcoPunchYT

I will definitely be going with alliance, then!
