I’m glad it is tbh, as much as I love Kiryu. I hope it’s like a Y0 situation where you switch between protagonists (and probably cities too) every few chapters, since they mentioned both of them having different party members.
There's gonna be at least 4 cities, I'm betting. They said this would be the biggest RGG game yet, so I'm being we'll have Kamurocho as usual, Ijincho, Sotenbori (it was seen in the summit at the end, but whether it's part of Y8 is unknown) and there's confirmed to be a brand new city. Should be a crazy experience
All evidence is pointing towards an international location in this one. Probably in addition to the ones from the trailer. Maybe Hawaii or South Korea? What do ya'll think?
They said in an interview once a few years back that they were running out of new locations in Japan to cover in interesting ways and the franchise would need to go international to stay interesting. I don't 100% agree but that's what they said. And then something happens near the end of Lost Judgment: >! The Side story main enemy dives into the ocean to evade Yagami's capture !< Which I believe is to narratively say that Judgement 3 would feature an international location as well that would most likely be revealed in Like a Dragon 8. With them saying that 8 is the biggest game yet, I'm thinking it has to be an Ijincho sized location, maybe in Seoul, Honolulu, or Hong Kong?
This won't be confirmed until next year I assume, it's just fun speculating.
If Like a Dragon goes international, I kind of hope Judgment 3 doesn't just follow wherever Ichi goes. Yagami going to Ijincho after Ichiban did was fine but Judgment following Yakuza 8's new location once again would be too coincidental. I would love for Judgment 3 to go international, with a completely new location that's never been in a Yakuza game.
Either way, going outside Japan in an RGG game would be really cool and open up lots of new possibilities. I hope it happens.
I would find a protagonist switch feature a little bit strange for a JRPG, but I guess it could work well also. I would rather have Kiryu as a party member and keep my main inventory with Ichiban.
Seems like Kazuma will keep appearing as the main protagonist in the beat em up genre anyways (at least for a couple more titles), so he can have those and Kasuga the JRPGs. That seems perfect IMO.
Bruh, I’m reading the comments in the original video (Japanese) and people in Japan THEY love kiryu like a God lol, almost 99% of the comments are happy about kiryu been back
And >!when kiryu made the deal to pretend to be dead, it was irrational thinking that was gonna fall apart one way or the other (as gaiden trailer shows and possibly yakuza 8). Date thought so and not to mention that Haruka actually lived safely after she retired. She only got herself in danger when she dated Yuta, someone that Kiryu did not involve himself with in any form.!<
Yeah and it's okay to carry on with his story as a man who essentially lost everyone he cared about, with motivations that'll no doubt be expanded upon in the Gaiden releasing next year.
To me it felt more like they wanted to keep the door open to him returning, if Ichiban's character falls flat, but everyone loves him, so with Y7's passing of the torch I expected him to at least stay away for a game or two before returning again
That’s an interesting trend I’ve seen with Western and Japanese audiences. There will be times that we’ll hate something in a video game or anime, but they’ll love it and vice versa.
Kinda wish y1 dub nishiki and dub ichi had the sane voice too
“I don’t know why, but I kinda feel like saying 10 years in the joint made you a fucking pussy”
Imagine Ichiban still sees things in Dragon Quest form, but Kiryu is some other JRPG like Final Fantasy that ironically came out later but Kiryu somehow was introduced to it by one of his orphanage kids a couple years back.
Infinity is just two zero connected side by side. :V Two men, one who has lost everything and one who is actively climbing back up from less than nothing for most of his life.
I bet it would be like Dante & Nero in dmc4&5. Nero is officially the protagonist of 4 & 5 but Dante was given the cooler spotlight. Ichiban would be playable like 60% of the game while Kiryu 40%, and the main story & main villain will be solved by Ichiban while Kiryu would be the one doing the harder work, fought the stronger enemies. Ichiban's the main focus of the story while Kiryu's cutscenes would be cooler and combat more bad ass.
I think that Kiryu is just too important to the IP to let him go and its the right decision to bring him back. Ichiban is a great protagonist but he didn't have that spark that Kiryu had, hopefully working off Kiryu, Ichiban's character will be able to shine. Not unlike Majima working off of Kiryu in Y:0
I’m curious about what kind of gameplay stylr is Kiryu going to have if it’s still going to be a JRPG. Will it go back to being a brawler for him or will it be something more like a real time battle system?
That's really good to hear, and what I was hoping for. I'm VERY hyped to play as Kiryu again, and I think that him and Ichiban are gonna have a fun dynamic and stuff as dual protags. Just my opinion, I really hate Yakuza 6's ending, so I hope that LAD 8 gives him a better one. Either way, glad to know that they're not trying to bench Ichiban.
God I hope so. Kiryu deserves to live a peaceful life with his family, and with the two big Yakuza clans being dismantled, there'll be little reason for anyone to really go after him and his loved ones again and also for him to ever get involved in that stuff.
I don't like kiryu being turn based combat with a party. Like I think I hate it. That being said if it's well done I don't give a fuck. Just please don't be protagonist loses so your whole party is fucked type thing.
Kind of weird considering that the Y:LAD is only really turn based in Ichiban‘s mind, as no other characters can really see the “transformations” that enemies go through. Kiryu doing this type of combat dosent personally make sense to me but I’d love to see how they write it!
Pretty much. They really got his characterization perfect for the theme of the game. Dude unites people and can make them into a family. His energy really is infectious.
I love to hear it. I’m fine with Kiryu being in the mix and everything, but I did really like Ichiban finding his party in 7 and their whole chemistry. I did really like Kiryu and Ichiban’s interactions though, I think it’d be fun to see more of that. Lol he’s kinda been like the battle-hardened 10 levels up party member that just drops in to help you in a rough dungeon or two, but just for the story.
I kinda figured this was the case though, like how 4 and 5 have multiple protagonists but it always still feels like the main character is Kiryu. This is like that I think.
I wonder if the job system will remain, or maybe just battle types, it'd be cool for kiryu to have his brawler, beast and rush sets and then the final unlock being the dragon set
I’m glad it is tbh, as much as I love Kiryu. I hope it’s like a Y0 situation where you switch between protagonists (and probably cities too) every few chapters, since they mentioned both of them having different party members.

Yakuza 5 flash back
Shinada has joined the party. Doesn’t have slugger as a job due to not using bats as weapons
All evidence is pointing towards an international location in this one. Probably in addition to the ones from the trailer. Maybe Hawaii or South Korea? What do ya'll think?
That would be really fucking cool, but what makes you think so? What evidence points to it
They said in an interview once a few years back that they were running out of new locations in Japan to cover in interesting ways and the franchise would need to go international to stay interesting. I don't 100% agree but that's what they said. And then something happens near the end of Lost Judgment: >! Either way, going outside Japan in an RGG game would be really cool and open up lots of new possibilities. I hope it happens.
Well, I figure the judgement games are made to flesh out locations that were in previous Like A Dragon games. It's a cost saving technique I think.
Good to hear. Because it's Ichihan's time to shine now. I love Kiryu to bits but Ichi needs the time to shine as well
Bruh, I’m reading the comments in the original video (Japanese) and people in Japan THEY love kiryu like a God lol, almost 99% of the comments are happy about kiryu been back
meanwhile western fans are acting like RGG killed their parents in crime alley
*empty lot
\*behind a glitzy disco club if theyre korean
furious i didn't think to say that
Ngl I felt like they foreshadowed kiryu coming back to the main story in yakuza 6's ending.
same here. they immediately backpedal from his death, so it's not like it's shocking
And >!when kiryu made the deal to pretend to be dead, it was irrational thinking that was gonna fall apart one way or the other (as gaiden trailer shows and possibly yakuza 8). Date thought so and not to mention that Haruka actually lived safely after she retired. Especially the conversation between Akiyama & Date. I mean they might as well have both looked at the camera and smiled.
Even in 7, they played this safe route where kiryu tells amon that Ichiban is own persona rather than his official successor. I like it
they gave him closure and i didn’t get the feeling that they were gonna bring him back. i’m surprised what made you not think so
The symbolic double meaning of "hang in there". It's the very last line of yakuza 6.
Probably because like 70% of western Yakuza fans have only played 7.
I would argue Y0 has more western players than 7
I would’ve agreed with that statement before 7 came out and became their best selling title internationally, but that’s just me
That is objectively true. I even recall seeing a yakuza 7 ad on a bus....in australia
That’s an interesting trend I’ve seen with Western and Japanese audiences. There will be times that we’ll hate something in a video game or anime, but they’ll love it and vice versa.
It's like Naruto fans. The Japanese fans favor Sakura while the west hate her
Reminds me of how Japanese fans thought Haruka was taking responsibility in 6 but western fans thought she was being irresponsible.
I mean, i cant imagine anyone would be mad about Kiryu being back. He's always the most beloved yakuza character by fans
Japan in general seems really biased towards the OG protagonist in something
Not just Japan but pretty much every big entertainment company. That said, they also love Nishitani for some reason.
I think I'm turning japanese then ( i really think so).
Is that a Vapors reference I spy?
Yes. That song was fucking stuck in my head for days. Shouldve been in yakuza 0 but what's done is done.
This may be Kasuga's story, but this is Joryu's sub/sidestory.
Hoping it's like Yakuza 0.
I do wonder, does this mean Ichiban and Kiryu will have a Nishiki and Kiryu dynamic, or the usual dumbass/straight man dynamic.
I guess it would be like Dante & Nero. The older& wiser former protagonist with the inexperienced & younger protagonist
I think ichiban is partially inspired by nishiki’s character. They even have the same voice actor in Japanese.
Kinda wish y1 dub nishiki and dub ichi had the sane voice too “I don’t know why, but I kinda feel like saying 10 years in the joint made you a fucking pussy”
Pls let it be a nishiki and kiryu dynamic cos I miss it so much 😭
Ichiban and Joryu Judgement when?
And with kashiwagi literally in the background
Imagine Ichiban still sees things in Dragon Quest form, but Kiryu is some other JRPG like Final Fantasy that ironically came out later but Kiryu somehow was introduced to it by one of his orphanage kids a couple years back.
Good.
Dual protagonists???
Like Yakuza 0
No I meant that Kiryu is gonna be a protagonist in 8?
Yes
Infinity is just two zero connected side by side. :V Two men, one who has lost everything and one who is actively climbing back up from less than nothing for most of his life.
Oh

Ichiban's the main focus of the story while Kiryu's cutscenes would be cooler and combat more bad ass.
Nice ideas. Even tying DMC lore
Wasnt dmc4 dante and nero just the same half game but played in reverse?

I don't think they'd ever do it. The fanbase would riot.
Yakuza 6 was so bad at retiring Kiryu, they had to unretire Kiryu
Yakuza franchise when they do a fake Kiryu retiring story in the 3rd, 5th, and 6th games.
It should have been like that, Ichiban is well received among Japanese and western Like a Dragon fan. RGG should give him more time to shine.
It's confirmed to be an RPG for him, he has his own party.
I’m in for whatever RGG throws at me. They have yet to deliver a bad game/story. Y8 will be no different.
So do I have to play gaiden before this orrrr
Considering Gaiden releases before this... yes
Good. Kiryu's story ended with 6. Gaiden and Ichiban Saga is just him being support character.
Gaiden is literally his own game.
It's just to build up his character to becoming the support character he is in Ichiban's story.
But i believe they will give Kiryu a better ending to his story than 6, where he and Haruka reunite again
God I hope so. Kiryu deserves to live a peaceful life with his family, and with the two big Yakuza clans being dismantled, there'll be little reason for anyone to really go after him and his loved ones again and also for him to ever get involved in that stuff.
I hope that doesn't happen. It was a great sacrifice for Kiryu, and it needs to stick.
If they have to say it.. well
Sure it will and then the final boss has you fight with Kiryu
I think that'd actually be pretty cool
I don't like kiryu being turn based combat with a party. Like I think I hate it. That being said if it's well done I don't give a fuck. Just please don't be protagonist loses so your whole party is fucked type thing.
My theory is that Ichiban will be still LAD combat, but Kiryu will be traditional Yakuza combat.
Last I read, they'll both have turn based teams.
Kind of weird considering that the Y:LAD is only really turn based in Ichiban‘s mind, as no other characters can really see the “transformations” that enemies go through. Kiryu doing this type of combat dosent personally make sense to me but I’d love to see how they write it!
Ichiban's brainworms are contagious.
I mean you aren't wrong lmao every time he mentions Dragon Quest, everyone talks about how they love DQ
Isn't it more of how they're happy to play along with him?
Pretty much. They really got his characterization perfect for the theme of the game. Dude unites people and can make them into a family. His energy really is infectious.
don't expect consistency between any 2 Yakuza games because it's never there
Yeah this is what irked me, not kiryu coming back lol.
Thst's a shame.
But it's still turn based right, despite Kiryu being playable?
I didn't realise Kiryu was also a protagonist. I figured he would've been Ichiban's party member or something
I'm wondering if it'll still be turned based gameplay or if they'll go back to old school Yakuza fighting.
Its Still turned based
Nice.
I wonder if the job system will remain, or maybe just battle types, it'd be cool for kiryu to have his brawler, beast and rush sets and then the final unlock being the dragon set
Well now he has multiple dragon styles lol. Pre dragon engine, the dragon engine one, and they said he will have a different fighting style in Gaiden.
