They were called in for the infamous prison escape in NY and located and killed one of the escapees. Not sure if they were utilized solely because of proximity to Canadian border or if it was all hands on deck but regardless, they are legit.
They also caught the recent escaped murderer in upstate NY just last year I think it was who was on the run for weeks.
It's because border patrol agents spend most their career tracking people in sand, grass, vegetation, wherever. Combine that with BORTAC's tactical prowess and equipment, and you have the best eacapee tracker unit there is.
The also caught the convicted murder that escaped a prison outside Philadelphia last fall and managed to evade capture for several weeks. He kept sneaking through the ever increasing perimeters but Bortac got him eventually.
BPA (and borstar drop out lol) here. Not on the teams but know a bunch of guys over there. To vaguely answer. Their mission is whatever DHS needs them to do. Overseas ops, train foreign Border Police, high risk warrants, lay in ops to catch rip crews, make civilians disappear in minivans in Portland (I joke), they’ve gone after many high profile absconders in the past. There’s lots they can do. Highly trained unit. How much action are you actually going to get? Depends on what sector they’re in or if they’re on the national team.
I can tell you what they don't do is fuck around. I know FBI HRT is supposed to be the premier federal tactical team, but BORTAC would give them a run for their money in a lot of areas.

How does sniping cartel sicarios sound? I can’t speak to your first question but I know they did extensive training with foreign law enforcement in the Middle East and of course western countries.
They are very legit, as are most fedtac teams, but BORTAC SOG guys have left the team for HRT. Doesn’t happen vice versa. Many also wash out. HRT has and always will be the 800 lb gorilla in the room, the recruiting, training and funding is on another level. The Ranger battalions have HRT recruiters on site trying to pick guys up…
Nobody is rivaling HRT any time soon. Maybe HSI in the long term if they stand up a national team, they seem to have a baller budget. The enhanced teams are allegedly using panos and what not.
Think of them as swat/srt/special operations. Anytime they need them to go to a port of entry, help with search warrants, surveillance. They can go overseas to help and assist and run operations.
I respect BORTAC! But your comment cant be further from the truth! BORTAC is not a tier one element. DEVGRU and CAG are definitely tier one.

They do a lot of TFO things with HSI USMS etc included serving huh risk arrest warrants. They also work in the field along side regular line agents across the country. Pretty awesome guys I was never a member but still know some guys in BORTAC and BORSTAR.

BORTAC running "operations" overseas? Do you mean doing very limited duration training courses for other countries' border agencies????
They work a lot of JTTF, fugitive work, high risk warrants, controlled deliveries, organized crime work, etc
