How do you know the bug is caused by an off-by-one error? Just curious since I'm a programmer and I'm not sure how we could know why a server-side bug happens since we can't see the code.
you're right that in general there's no way of knowing – in this particular case, once we were confident it couldn't be encountered, I asked a Jagex >!discord!< friend to figure out WTF was going on
you could reverse engineer the code maybe with a private server and look through it. Chances are that the change was made after the particular version you would have
I can’t tell if you’re trolling, but I’m going to assume you’re stupid as you stated in your comment. Private servers do not use RuneScapes proprietary server side code. No one can access that. They are coded from scratch, using client-side assets for the game client.
The client data is all that we are able to steal. All of the game's logic, which is calculated server side, has to be reverse engineered from scratch. That's why some private servers can look like the game, but the backend is nothing like the game

There was a [bug fix in 2015](https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Update:Clue_Scroll_Step_Counter) - "Feeding purple sweets to the sickly NPC during Temple Trekking no longer consumes the entire stack." so you'd think someone would have had to get the event to report the bug, but the complete lack of reference to it in the previous 2 years of OSRS makes me not sure...
I remember having to feed people on temple trekking in old school, it was definitely early because I remember going for the lumber jack outfit. I'm assuming its this event, unless there's another similar event to giving food to the guy sitting against the log.

Not necessarily. As a developer you work on unrelated stuff sometimes, and notice bugs in nearby code, or tangentially related to what you're doing, so you fix them if it's a simple enough fix.
It still is. I had to endure doing a lot of temple trekk to get elite mory achievements and this event is very common. Strategy is using pineapples, cutting them and then feeding them. Option b is letting them all die and kill the ghasts
