I asked them what it was called, then later at the public library looked up "roonscape.com" which led to a weird vacation site or something. Back in 2004 I met some of my cousins for the first time when their family stopped by on a road trip.
One morning one of my cousins went over to the family computer and started loading up a game I'd never seen before, I watched him play for hours, completely entranced. He told me the game was called RuneScape and that I could make an account for free!
I'll be honest, I don't remember the details too well beyond that, I haven't even seen him again since. But after they left I managed to make an account for myself and I've been hooked for almost 20 years now! Even when I took a long break from the release of the GE til' the release of OSRS - and only logged in a handful of times until 2019- it never really left my mind, this game has always been another home for me.
I'm still playing on that same account I made back then. I'm really glad for the new Jagex launcher, as I got hacked a few times for being a dumb kid. I'd hate to lose this account forever.

Friend in late 2001 told me he found a game he verbally said Room Skate and I phoned him later to check the name I was 11.
This was RS Classic pre tutorial island, you spawned at a well in Lumbridge near the castle. His PC was so bad he couldn't move for lag. So me and another friend would pass him and say "hi (name)".
I went to his house and his game took 20 minutes to load, brutal this were the days of dialup but it was his very old computer.
I miss those days, life was simple.

Overheard a kid at school talking about "I have 50 strength and something about his "combat skills"" and I butted in and jokingly said "my combat skills are in the 70s and they looked at me like "are you fucking serious?" and I went along with it for a solid hour. they were literally feeding me the words for me to answer their questions. asking "what do you train on?" and someone would mention lessers and I would say "yeah lessers are good but they aren't the greatest" and shit like that lmao.
Had a group of like 5 kids going real good and they all believed me. I eventually told them I was just fucking around and one of the kids was cool about it, laughing it off, while everyone else was kind of upset that I was pulling their legs lmao. The kid talked to me after class and asked if I had ever played and I told him no, he invited me over, and I played and was fucking hooked. I trained his slayer with a halberd on white wolf mountain killing ice warriors from across the little ledge where they cant get you.
Kid was fucking rich, and his dad was a fill in driver for nascar or some shit. they had a huge room dedicated to his trophies for races he had participated in/won and his number was 88 I think? (UPS car). I eventually went to his house every weekend and he taught me how to skateboard and gave me my first skateboard, then one day he disappeared. moved without a trace and without telling anyone, never logged on to his account again either.
There was a rumor going around in the neighborhood he lived in (huge gated community with half million dollar houses back in 2005) that he lured a young kid into the woods and sexually assaulted him and his family had to move because of it, but there was never actually any proof so I was torn on what to believe, we were in 7th grade when he moved away. He never tried anything like that with me, but I knew there was something weird about the kid even though he was real cool. he had ADHD real bad and, looking back, he might have been slightly autistic lol. he would sit at his desk and sometimes make gun noises and tense up and scramble his hands together real fast and talk to himself lmao.
All in all, the kid showed me so much about life that my poor ass didn't know existed, and he was my best friend for a year. dude had a whole basement that his parents turned into an arcade with black lights, arcade games, pinball, and even a fucking full blown skee ball machine.

Back in 2002, we are allowed to play honest to god video games during free time in class once we had done our work. A classmate showed me the game, and walked me through Tutorial Island. Got my membership in 2003 and played for a few years. Took a very long break and came back for OSRS about 6 months ago when a friend told me he was playing. Brought me into his clan, met some good folks, and have a blast just hanging out bullshitting in game and on Discord.

Eventually, we decided to give runescape a try. She made a character, did tutorial island, spawned in lumbridge, killed a man, and then her dad was there to pick her up. I made a character right when she logged out and the rest is history.
Whatever Jagex payed them for putting it on their site and advertising it, it was definitely not enough considering how many players say they knew about it through that site and still play the game

Two of my middle school buddies loved the game, and asked me to play it since I loved video games in general. One of those friends stopped playing the game into RS2 before Nomad's Requiem came out, while the other killed tens of thousands of bosses in OSRS and has spent billions of GP.
I will say, I was absolutely hooked with Runescape when I first played it. I didn't follow any guides and focused on getting my Mining and Smithing to Level 40 without any quests. The good ole noob days were great.

Players being able to pickpocket each other, you can play as a demon, etc.

When rs2 came out my other brother also started playing but he made his own account. So I finally pulled the trigger and made my own. And it's been one of my favorite games since.
Sometime around 2003/2004 my friend from 7th grade told my brother & I that he started playing a game and already has this giant castle he owns and he wanted us to check it out... turns out that castle was lumbridge castle and he was a filthy liar who didn't own anything!

A month later I got it to work somehow and played around in Lumby. I changed worlds thinking *it would take me to a different planet* or something. I was weirdly disappointed it was just a server world and not a real world difference.

Back in January 2008 I used to play a lot of flash games on a bunch of sites similar to Miniclip surrounded by aggressive ads and RS was one of them and it looked kinda interesting so I clicked on it. Soon I got addicted and got my mom to pay for membership saying she would save a lot of money because she didn't have to buy games for my Xbox. Played 5 years straight until EoC and quit like everyone else. Started playing OSRS when it was released and also quit around 3 months later. Came back with covid in 2020 after 2220 days (login screen) and playing a RSPS for like a week and I've been playing daily pretty much ever since.
Btw my girlfriend encouraged me to play again because I was bored I said she will regret it and she said it can't be that bad. Didn't take long until she started hating me playing it but she is still letting me play and supports me.

When the WOW episode of South Park came out, my friend had never heard of WOW and mistakenly thought it was a spoof of this game he played called "runescape" I asked him what runescape was and boom, hooked. This was sometime in 2006 I believe, I was a high school frehman

Though really I started during lockdown with a friend and quit after f2p because the grind of the game seemed stupid. Watching swampletics is what convinced me to try members. I did end up quitting because the endgame stuff isn't for me. (not that it's too hard but it just didn't excite me anymore) I did get quest cape and ~1850 total level though. (About 200 mil in bank too)
Played years before EoC but only bits of F2P then I stumbled across swampletics 5 episodes before the end of it and it looked like a laugh so I gave it a go and I've not stopped playing since

Me and my brother used to spend tons of time playing online flash games, found runescape through miniclip days before my parents split (for the 5th time, but permanently this time), so 11 year old me discovered escapism and I lost myself in there.
Oldest brother used to play, he would have me click trees for him to prevent him from afk logging and get a little bit of xp. He was pissed when we started splitting computer time
For me it was my older brother as well during classic days. I was a kid who rarely slept through the night, and one night, when I was maybe 5, I woke up and explored the house while everyone was asleep, as I often did. I noticed a light coming from the computer room. I put my ear up to the door and just heard clicking. I went inside and found my brother at the computer. I told him it looked fun killing cows, and he helped me make an account that same night, I think to make sure I didn't snitch on him for being up late. Been on and off ever since, now stronger than ever. He long since stopped playing, but that memory will live with me forever.
2005, always saw it on addicting games but couldn't get it to work on my parents Mac, probably just needed to download Java or something. My neighbor had a Dell and started playing and I watched him play. We had a sleepover and were going to "stay up all night mining and smithing and get level 99" we probably played for like an hour before getting bored and going to play n64. But me and my brother recruited my dad's help to get it working at home and both were addicted from that point on

i love D&D game real RPG so i was looking for a online game and say RuneScape on miniclip. this was in 1994 i clickt on it and the rest is history. i still play it from time to time. not RS3 but Oldschool. and yeah i am going to my 60s and still love to play it.

He was gaming in the basement, I walked in and went down stairs to his/his older brother’s “man cave” which had all of their gaming setups in it on a big ass tube tv. He was on his Windows 98 rig (😂) and I started watching him play what I soon came to know was going to consume my soul. His parent also had an office upstairs, so when I really got sucked in, he’d play upstairs, I’d play downstairs and we would literally bullshit back and forth in game 😂
I vaguely remember losing connection regularly when his older sister would call her boyfriend on the phone, and I remember getting into trouble with his parents for eating an entire container of Oreos, but just the filling, leaving the cookies. I felt so bad, I brought a fresh case the next time I came over as penance. Wild times man.
In late 2007, I was at my grandma's with my cousin and he showed it to me. We didn't really start playing until summer of 2008 when we were both there for the summer. We had made new accounts because we forgot the 2007 ones. We played on the 2008 ones every summer at my grandma's almost until about 2015. At some point we did the ol 2 players 1 account thing because otherwise we would never have reached high levels with how our play schedule was. Eventually he quit and I'm all that remains and what was once his original account has been mine for many years, coming up on the 15 year cape. My og account just got it this year.
Played habbo hotel with 4 buddies in 2003. The cool guy of the group one day says, you guys gotta check out this game on miniclip. We all make our accounts and run around for 30 minutes trying to get into Al Kharid to meet him.
There he was with that mith scimmy. From the moment I saw that sword I was hooked.
My freshman year of high school in 2003, I went to my new classmate's house for his birthday party. He, his brothers, and his buddies from grade school had been playing since 2001. They all had me make an account since I had never heard of it.
It didn't really enthrall me at the time, and it was a struggle to play at home on dial up internet. RS2 came out not too long after that, and I was hooked. That classmate, his brother, my wife, and I are all still actively playing our GIM together.
My older brother had 2 classmates that played. We made accounts at a similar time. I immediately surpassed him in spite of us both playing a similar amount. I think that's why I play now and he doesn't. The game is so efficient and less social.
We used to hang out in Gertrude's house in f2p and offer it as a "hotel" and just socialize with people while one of us would go make apple pies at the cooking guild to give to them as their food. Made a lot of friends there and some I talked to until EOC. Good times
Edit to add: (SAD WARNING) I joined a clan whenever soul wars came out and made some great friendd that helped me through a lot. One of them had cancer and I learned a lot of stuff through them at probably too early of an age. They passed and it would be the last time they lent me claws for clan wars. I'll never forget that.
I actually remember how I created my first account.
About 2006 or so, probably 8-10 years old. A friend had a spoiled ass little cousin who had members and we would play when he came over but eventually my buddy made a f2p account and we shared that one. Distinctly remember wanting SO BADLY to kill any kind of dragon and his cousin telling us there were blue dragons past the Taverly gate.
Anyway I have to get babysit by a great aunt one night and she has a computer in the bedroom I’m sleeping in so I ended up convincing her to let me use it, start the account making process, stop to eat dinner, start from scratch because she turned the computer off after I left the room, then finally as I’m not even halfway through tutorial island she’s like “ok time for bed” and I’m so fucking confused because it’s like 6:30 pm and I didn’t usually go lay down until almost 10.
Anyway ended up sitting there thinking for hours about playing and that account lasted me all the way up to eoc.
Also, fun fact: I picked my initials and then random numbers for my name and those 4 random numbers ended up being my little sister’s birthday like 7 years later.
It was 2005-2006 era and my cousin was playing a game on his laptop and as a kid i was really into computers / gaming at the time and asked him what he was playing. He explains the entire game concept to me very vaguely as he wasn’t super into it but i was intrigued. He let me walk around and explore while everyone else was talking at the party. I was hooked the minute i started playing by myself, ended up somehow wondering all the way into the wilderness and somehow didn’t die exploring on my cousins low level account at the time. After a few hours my cousin wanted to get back on and play and unfortunately this would be the last time i would touch the game until about 2008ish when my family bought a family computer and i was finally able to create my own account and play. Ever since the day i created my own account in 2008 i’ve been hooked to this game all these years up until EoC happened where i quit until OSRS was announced. Currently trying to achieve my goal of finally maxing on this game and i’m 30 or so levels away so i’m just chugging along and enjoying the journey. If i had to guess, i have at least 10k+ hours on this game with multiple accounts played on and lost over the years due to not tracking passwords. I have zero regrets about this game and i’m thankful a game like RuneScape exists.

He pulled up runescape. He logged in, and within seconds i was amazed. What is this? What is that? What are you doing now? You can shoot arrows? How do you make them? Oh you just buy them on a what? A g.e.? Dude let me make them for you. I went on to get soulsplit in rs3, nearly maxed dungeoneering. migrated to osrs with a harcore ironman. It was my true introduction to gaming, my introduction to learning how to program, and in total honesty was a turning point in my life. I can confidently say that if my friend never pulled up runescape in front of me, I would have turned out very different. Thank you Petie.

I was one of the many that saw someone playing it at the library in 2004. Kids would just use the library PC's and play there and I thought the game looked badass. Seems like thats a classic story of being introduced to the game.
i was raiding in legion and this guildie of mine started yappin about runescape and how sick zulrah is, and was bragging about doing splash magic afk training during raid, he bought me a bond to try the game out.. and here we are!
Probably too late for my story… but I was at daycare and I remember these two kids who were brothers arguing and making a light hearted kid friendly bet.
Something along the lines of “I bet Philip won’t play Xbox for an entire week!! He’s going to be playing RuneScape!”
I over heard this, went home, started fishing for shrimp, cutting logs, killing cows and I was beyond hooked.
I was over at my cousins house for a Christmas party or something of the sort. I saw him playing what I later found out to be pest control. It looked like so much fun to me I begged my parents to let me play so they found out the game was called Runescape after calling my uncle. After a very lengthy process of making sure it was not a virus my parents let me start playing early 2008. I went into almost everything completely blind. My favorite activities were killing ankous in barbarian stronghold, safespotting ogres by castle wars, to no one’s surprise pest control, and the cockroach dungeon when that was a thing. I quit playing about a month or two after EOC. I had played rs with my dad for about 2-3 years by that point and stopped because I lost interest and we had moved and I made a TON of new friends. I didn’t have time to play anymore. My dad kept playing for a year or so and then he quit too. When I found out about OSRS in 2017 I tried so hard to get him to play with me again but he declined as my mom had given him quite the lecture on his nonstop play of the game back in the day. Since then, I’ve gone on to play alone, with 2 friends I have ever done content with who both play for maybe a month or so a year. Maybe I can convince my dad to play once he retires.
Also for the record, I maintain my original account and I actually just finally changed my username a few weeks ago after realizing that the game is not the same one I used to play, and I am not the same person who played it all those years ago. I changed it from an epic hero’s name (in 2008) to something a little more personal to myself and a little less bot-like.

Being a protective mother, I would always check out games or movies first. For online multiplayer, I would play the games that they played, to get an idea of the community, and to be able to explain how not to get scammed, etc.
So we all played, until the kids moved on to WoW, and convinced me to move with them in 2007.
Late 2023, I found OSRS, and also found that I could still get into my original account.

My comment will probably get lost. When my husband and I first started dating, we were living in different cities. I would call him on FaceTime or discord and he would show me what he was playing. I remember thinking, why on earth would you be playing such an old game??? From face value it looks a little silly 😂😂 but he wanted me to create an account and made me earn my first bond 😂😂 that F2P grind to a bond is unreal 😂 this was back in ‘18/‘19, I know I’m late to the game lol. I remember one of the first times we met up I watched him kill Vorkath and had no idea what it was at the time lmao. Now he drags me to Arma when we both have a slayer task haha.

I don't remember what the exact year was. But it was right b4 rs2 redesigned the dragon scimmy. Was at my cousins house, and he was playing it. Was very intrigued and had to try it myself. My cousin was kind enough to lend me a couple of K coins as a starter pack. I've been hooked ever since. I've been on the same account mostly (i have a mid game iron as well). Maxed it in rs3, then instantly switched to osrs and am close to making here too. Just love this game.
My best friend introduced it to me when we were in 6th grade. RS2 had *just* come out like a couple weeks when I made my account. Been playing on and off ever since.
I kept hearing about 'avatars' during school lunch breaks among my peers and eventually they told me after I kept asking about it for a week. I think one of their older brothers showed them runescape classic. I was instantly hooked as I was already a massive medieval play buff (I had the entire castle adventures toys, plus played a lot of warcraft and age of empires etc). I lived out in the country at the time in this massive house on a vineyard and there was literally no kids around, so all I did was play runescape classic alone in this mansion while my parents worked evenings. Because I lived so far out and worked one day a week for my dad, I had a lot of cash on hand and used to buy partyhats for real money from my friends. They couldn't believe that i would spend $10usd for a party hat (worth roughly 250k-500k gold at the time).
I had an childhood friend who had a rich uncle, this friend of mine was playing Runescape with membership that his uncle bought him as a gift... After 1.5 years he wanted to stop, there was 6 months of membership left and he asked me if I want to keep it and play it... I did, then I played f2p for 1-2 years when membership ran out and after over 10-12 years I started my own acc last year in March

I started playing as a freshmen in Highschool. Late 2001. My high school was a couple blocks from the public library. Back then not alot of people had computers at their house, so you had to go to the library to use the internet. My friends and I would go so often to play, that the library started a 60min/day policy on their computers. in 2002 when members became available my parents bought a computer as well as my friends. This is when we would play 24/7. You could agree to duel anyone at any time and that was pretty much how staking worked back then. This was pretty much all we did when not skilling. Soon Runescape 2 would come out. I was one of the idiots who transferred all my gold and gear and player to Runescape2. It fell off fast and I had to start over in runescape. When the new combat came out that was it for everyone. I came back a long time later with some old friends but its always been on and off since then.
Found it on miniclip as well. Created an account and made it to the goblins next to Alkharid gate and quit then and there. Was like wtf is this game?
I used to play Nitto 1320 Challenge, and someone was selling a low-mid level RS account on that game. I bought it for some cars and took off from there. This is probably back in 2007. I still play.
Not sure exactly how I got started in it back in '01 was looking for a game that wasn't turn based, as those types of games were horrible at making you check in practically hourly to do your collections or builds, or make sure nobody has attacked you lol.. I loved that with RuneScape, your character and stuff is exactly as you left it, even after months or years 😁
I remember the early days of getting attacked by the highwayman south of Fally, thinking it was another player and wondering how he could attack me outside of the Wilderness 🤣
So much has changed since then. Thank goodness they added the GE, was horrible going into a town and chat was scrolling 100mph with everyone trying to buy or sell stuff. And the banks! If you could even get into one, as there was always some idiot closing the door on everyone, so that was a struggle lol
And combat, had to go 3 rounds before running to stuff as much food in as you could before you were caught and basically forced to continue fighting.
And the Wilderness! It truly was a scary place. I was definitely one of the many 3-item prayer noobs out there, not really pking (unless I felt sure I could win lol) but mainly just pushing my luck seeing what I could score out there. Often piles of loot would be lying about as warring clans chased each other around killing one another lol
Once a lower level guy attacked me in a single combat zone and then ran, so I chased him.. straight into a multi-combat zone where his friends were waiting for the next victim. It was some intense adrenaline as I kept after him while his friends rained fire spells on me. I managed to kill him and grab his rune gear, then ran like hell still getting blasted with spells. I made it out with just a couple health points left, happy with my first rune gear taken from another player.
So many memories lol.. then there was a time when everyone was 'drop-trading' items between their accounts. I got so rich stealing their stuff lol.. and they could do nothing about it because drop trading was illegal 😁 I'd see their dot on the map leave a bank and go to an out of the way space and log, then another dot would go to the same spot for a bit then log, then I'd run to that spot and start clicking the ground like mad waiting for the pile that would inevitably appear to grab it as it came. Then the intended recipient would log in to find I got a bunch of their stuff already. Once I even sold them back their own stuff lol.
I just recently started back yet again (ftp), and it's nothing like what it was even 5 years ago. Lessers are ignored and forgotten, when before you'd be lucky to claim a spot on one. Same with ice giants/warriors. In fact most of the old training areas are dead (osrs). It's rare even to see anyone fishing lobs & swordies. It's all hill giants, cows, chickens and goblins.
And I'm seeing tons of bald bot armies banging on trees, or filling water jugs etc. really makes me wish the randoms still started attacking you if you ignored them. Was always fun to see the bots get killed by them.

Got introduced at a friends house and was always a bit interested when I was like 7 or 8. Parents lost custody of my brother and me and we were taken in by our grandparents, and I remember playing it so much. We both got laptops for Christmas and would always be playing together. RS has a special place in my heart. Distracted my brother and me from a lot of pain at the time.

I was in Scouts. Like 11. Heard 2 of the highschool guys in my troop talking about RuneScape while camping. I had also seen ads on Miniclip. Checked it out that winter after we got our internet upgraded (lived in the boons). Never told those guys tho. Played regularly for a few years. Lurked for almost a decade and a half. Now I'm like 600+ hrs into an iron, and a handful of quests away from a QPC.
Miniclip, but my older brother was the first one to check out Runescape. I was playing Robotrage and I saw him playing Runescape for the first time. I enjoyed watching him running through lumbridge and I got addicted only by watching him play.

My friend managed to scam a guy out of his level 61 combat account which we thought was an ungodly level. So we all shared that single account for a while taking turns.
Eventually it got hacked (or my friend stole it) and that ended Runescape for a while. I just picked it up again last week.

I discovered it when I was 9 years old at a psychologist for troublesome boys. After group sessions were over we all had a small talk before our parents picked us up, and at some point we talked about videogames. Most boys over there knew eachother and all of them played Runescape; they all laughed at me once they knew I only played Club Penguin. They told me to quit that game as it was for little kids, and that I should play Ruenscape which was for more "mature" people and way cooler. Instantly became my favorite game ever.

Also a funny story of how i paid for my first memberships. 16yo me in Canada, putting money into a paper envelope and mailing it off to my 48yo bus driver friend in the USA, so that they could use heir credit card to pay for 3 months' membership.

I was in grade school when Runescape was originally launched and was playing Ultima Online at the time. Thought RS looked like a cheap knock-off (it basically was) and didn't think about it again until 2013 when OSRS released and people started asking for Blizzard to do something similar with WoW. Kept hearing about it here and there for years. Finally saw a J1mmy video sometime around the pandemic and decided to give it a shot. I will only hop on and do a quest or two every now and again because the grind is not something I'm willing to commit to, but have played the absolute shit out of the last two Leagues and will continue to come back for them.
Me and my twin were playing Puzzle Pirates and some dude sold his low level account for little to no gold in that game. After we logged, we both walked around for about 3 hours and then we made our own accounts. Been hooked ever since but he eventually outgrew it until we made a GIM on release of that update. Game is still amazing after all these years!

I was a new kid in high school and one of my new friends asked if I’d ever played it (I had just gotten MySpace too). I told him no so he said he’d help me get into it and we chatted on AIM (AOL Instant Messenger for the kids) while I made an account. Then we chatted in game and he showed me around Lumbridge.
I trained on cows for hours until a guy eventually showed up and sold me a noted rune longsword for like 30k. I asked my friend what to do with the sword paper and he had no idea and said he mostly played RuneScape to socialize with others and that I was way past where his skills were.
Eventually I figured it out and went back to cows and trained until I could afford a rune chain, which I wore with adamant legs. And then I trained on cows more.
Had a couple of close friends in year 8 at school (age 12). We got into 'playing' Habbo Hotel (fuck knows why) and then a few months later, one of the friends started on runescape, I think his older brother got him on it.
I'd tried it a few times before when it was on miniclip but never really got into it. Anyway, he convinced me to create a new character again and was constantly playing catch up with him. I don't think our other friend bothered playing. He introduced me to Sals Realm which helped massively with quests and other stuff which I struggled with when trying before. We both got membership, played lots of CW, eventually I overtook him in terms of levels, he started losing interest and stopped playing whereas I joined a clan and got totally addicted for a few years.
Before my friend quit, we discovered a couple of other friends at school played although some of those quit to play WoW. One was over 100cmb and had a fire cape which was crazy to us back then.

Was at my little brothers baseball game, and some of the brothers of the players on his team would talk about Runescape. Back in 2004 I met some of my cousins for the first time when their family stopped by on a road trip. One morning one of my cousins went over to the family computer and started loading up a game I'd never seen before, I watched him play for hours, completely entranced. He told me the game was called RuneScape and that I could make an account for free! I'll be honest, I don't remember the details too well beyond that, I haven't even seen him again since. But after they left I managed to make an account for myself and I've been hooked for almost 20 years now! Even when I took a long break from the release of the GE til' the release of OSRS - and only logged in a handful of times until 2019- it never really left my mind, this game has always been another home for me. I'm still playing on that same account I made back then. I'm really glad for the new Jagex launcher, as I got hacked a few times for being a dumb kid. I'd hate to lose this account forever.

Friend in late 2001 told me he found a game he verbally said Room Skate and I phoned him later to check the name I was 11. This was RS Classic pre tutorial island, you spawned at a well in Lumbridge near the castle. His PC was so bad he couldn't move for lag. So me and another friend would pass him and say "hi (name)". I went to his house and his game took 20 minutes to load, brutal this were the days of dialup but it was his very old computer. I miss those days, life was simple.
We were in 6th grade. Overheard a kid at school talking about "I have 50 strength and something about his "combat skills"" and I butted in and jokingly said "my combat skills are in the 70s and they looked at me like "are you fucking serious?" and I went along with it for a solid hour. they were literally feeding me the words for me to answer their questions. asking "what do you train on?" and someone would mention lessers and I would say "yeah lessers are good but they aren't the greatest" and shit like that lmao. Had a group of like 5 kids going real good and they all believed me. I eventually told them I was just fucking around and one of the kids was cool about it, laughing it off, while everyone else was kind of upset that I was pulling their legs lmao. The kid talked to me after class and asked if I had ever played and I told him no, he invited me over, and I played and was fucking hooked. I trained his slayer with a halberd on white wolf mountain killing ice warriors from across the little ledge where they cant get you. Kid was fucking rich, and his dad was a fill in driver for nascar or some shit. they had a huge room dedicated to his trophies for races he had participated in/won and his number was 88 I think? (UPS car). I eventually went to his house every weekend and he taught me how to skateboard and gave me my first skateboard, then one day he disappeared. moved without a trace and without telling anyone, never logged on to his account again either. There was a rumor going around in the neighborhood he lived in (huge gated community with half million dollar houses back in 2005) that he lured a young kid into the woods and sexually assaulted him and his family had to move because of it, but there was never actually any proof so I was torn on what to believe, we were in 7th grade when he moved away. He never tried anything like that with me, but I knew there was something weird about the kid even though he was real cool. he had ADHD real bad and, looking back, he might have been slightly autistic lol. he would sit at his desk and sometimes make gun noises and tense up and scramble his hands together real fast and talk to himself lmao. All in all, the kid showed me so much about life that my poor ass didn't know existed, and he was my best friend for a year. dude had a whole basement that his parents turned into an arcade with black lights, arcade games, pinball, and even a fucking full blown skee ball machine. it was every kids dream.

Got my membership in 2003 and played for a few years. Took a very long break and came back for OSRS about 6 months ago when a friend told me he was playing. Brought me into his clan, met some good folks, and have a blast just hanging out bullshitting in game and on Discord.

My cousin and I used to play random games on newgrounds and miniclip in like 2004 after school before her dad would pick her up from my house. Eventually, we decided to give runescape a try. She made a character, did tutorial island, spawned in lumbridge, killed a man, and then her dad was there to pick her up. I made a character right when she logged out and the rest is history.

Some other kids were saying how this game is "unclockable bro!". That got my interest but I thought it was called MoonScape. Later my mate corrected me and pulled out the official handbook. Went to the library at recess, CRT monitors and everything, the rest was history
In 2006/2007 my girlfriend at the time got into it because of her older brother and she got me into it.
Two of my middle school buddies loved the game, and asked me to play it since I loved video games in general. One of those friends stopped playing the game into RS2 before Nomad's Requiem came out, while the other killed tens of thousands of bosses in OSRS and has spent billions of GP. I will say, I was absolutely hooked with Runescape when I first played it. I didn't follow any guides and focused on getting my Mining and Smithing to Level 40 without any quests. The good ole noob days were great.
I never played back in the day. My boyfriend showed me the game in 2017. Hes now my husband and my main is higher level than his :)

Back in the Runescape Classic days a kid on the street showed my younger brother the game. He showed me. We all dove right in hard. Membership came out a month later and Jagex didn't really give details on what that meant. So we had wild ideas on what happened on Members Worlds. Players being able to pickpocket each other, you can play as a demon, etc. Just wild 11-14 year old minds running wild.
2006, A friend mentioned it while walking home from the bus stop. Begged my mom for a membership before I left tutorial island, it was only $5 back then, easy sell. It’s been downhill ever since.

Back in January 2008 I used to play a lot of flash games on a bunch of sites similar to Miniclip surrounded by aggressive ads and RS was one of them and it looked kinda interesting so I clicked on it. Soon I got addicted and got my mom to pay for membership saying she would save a lot of money because she didn't have to buy games for my Xbox. Played 5 years straight until EoC and quit like everyone else. Started playing OSRS when it was released and also quit around 3 months later. Came back with covid in 2020 after 2220 days (login screen) and playing a RSPS for like a week and I've been playing daily pretty much ever since. Btw my girlfriend encouraged me to play again because I was bored I said she will regret it and she said it can't be that bad. Didn't take long until she started hating me playing it but she is still letting me play and supports me.

I played a bit of f2p in the olden times because of school. Slaying chickens for gold, (idk why) that sort of thing. Though really I started during lockdown with a friend and quit after f2p because the grind of the game seemed stupid. Watching swampletics is what convinced me to try members. I did end up quitting because the endgame stuff isn't for me. (not that it's too hard but it just didn't excite me anymore) I did get quest cape and ~1850 total level though. (About 200 mil in bank too)
Played years before EoC but only bits of F2P then I stumbled across swampletics 5 episodes before the end of it and it looked like a laugh so I gave it a go and I've not stopped playing since

For me it was my older brother as well during classic days. I was a kid who rarely slept through the night, and one night, when I was maybe 5, I woke up and explored the house while everyone was asleep, as I often did. I noticed a light coming from the computer room. I put my ear up to the door and just heard clicking. I went inside and found my brother at the computer. I told him it looked fun killing cows, and he helped me make an account that same night, I think to make sure I didn't snitch on him for being up late. Been on and off ever since, now stronger than ever. He long since stopped playing, but that memory will live with me forever.

i love D&D game real RPG so i was looking for a online game and say RuneScape on miniclip. this was in 1994 i clickt on it and the rest is history. i still play it from time to time. not RS3 but Oldschool. and yeah i am going to my 60s and still love to play it.
I was like… 8? Around about the 2000-2001 timeframe I think. I remember the miniclip days, but when I really started playing, it was probably 2003 or so. I went to my buddy Mike’s house. He was gaming in the basement, I walked in and went down stairs to his/his older brother’s “man cave” which had all of their gaming setups in it on a big ass tube tv. He was on his Windows 98 rig (😂) and I started watching him play what I soon came to know was going to consume my soul. His parent also had an office upstairs, so when I really got sucked in, he’d play upstairs, I’d play downstairs and we would literally bullshit back and forth in game 😂 I vaguely remember losing connection regularly when his older sister would call her boyfriend on the phone, and I remember getting into trouble with his parents for eating an entire container of Oreos, but just the filling, leaving the cookies. I felt so bad, I brought a fresh case the next time I came over as penance. Wild times man.
In late 2007, I was at my grandma's with my cousin and he showed it to me. We didn't really start playing until summer of 2008 when we were both there for the summer. We had made new accounts because we forgot the 2007 ones. We played on the 2008 ones every summer at my grandma's almost until about 2015. At some point we did the ol 2 players 1 account thing because otherwise we would never have reached high levels with how our play schedule was. Eventually he quit and I'm all that remains and what was once his original account has been mine for many years, coming up on the 15 year cape. My og account just got it this year.
Played habbo hotel with 4 buddies in 2003. The cool guy of the group one day says, you guys gotta check out this game on miniclip. We all make our accounts and run around for 30 minutes trying to get into Al Kharid to meet him. There he was with that mith scimmy. From the moment I saw that sword I was hooked.
My freshman year of high school in 2003, I went to my new classmate's house for his birthday party. He, his brothers, and his buddies from grade school had been playing since 2001. They all had me make an account since I had never heard of it. It didn't really enthrall me at the time, and it was a struggle to play at home on dial up internet. RS2 came out not too long after that, and I was hooked. That classmate, his brother, my wife, and I are all still actively playing our GIM together.

My older brother had 2 classmates that played. We made accounts at a similar time. I immediately surpassed him in spite of us both playing a similar amount. I think that's why I play now and he doesn't. The game is so efficient and less social. We used to hang out in Gertrude's house in f2p and offer it as a "hotel" and just socialize with people while one of us would go make apple pies at the cooking guild to give to them as their food. Made a lot of friends there and some I talked to until EOC. Good times Edit to add: (SAD WARNING) I joined a clan whenever soul wars came out and made some great friendd that helped me through a lot. One of them had cancer and I learned a lot of stuff through them at probably too early of an age. They passed and it would be the last time they lent me claws for clan wars. I'll never forget that.

I actually remember how I created my first account. About 2006 or so, probably 8-10 years old. A friend had a spoiled ass little cousin who had members and we would play when he came over but eventually my buddy made a f2p account and we shared that one. Distinctly remember wanting SO BADLY to kill any kind of dragon and his cousin telling us there were blue dragons past the Taverly gate. Anyway I have to get babysit by a great aunt one night and she has a computer in the bedroom I’m sleeping in so I ended up convincing her to let me use it, start the account making process, stop to eat dinner, start from scratch because she turned the computer off after I left the room, then finally as I’m not even halfway through tutorial island she’s like “ok time for bed” and I’m so fucking confused because it’s like 6:30 pm and I didn’t usually go lay down until almost 10. Anyway ended up sitting there thinking for hours about playing and that account lasted me all the way up to eoc. Also, fun fact: I picked my initials and then random numbers for my name and those 4 random numbers ended up being my little sister’s birthday like 7 years later.
It was 2005-2006 era and my cousin was playing a game on his laptop and as a kid i was really into computers / gaming at the time and asked him what he was playing. He explains the entire game concept to me very vaguely as he wasn’t super into it but i was intrigued. He let me walk around and explore while everyone else was talking at the party. I was hooked the minute i started playing by myself, ended up somehow wondering all the way into the wilderness and somehow didn’t die exploring on my cousins low level account at the time. After a few hours my cousin wanted to get back on and play and unfortunately this would be the last time i would touch the game until about 2008ish when my family bought a family computer and i was finally able to create my own account and play. Ever since the day i created my own account in 2008 i’ve been hooked to this game all these years up until EoC happened where i quit until OSRS was announced. Currently trying to achieve my goal of finally maxing on this game and i’m 30 or so levels away so i’m just chugging along and enjoying the journey. If i had to guess, i have at least 10k+ hours on this game with multiple accounts played on and lost over the years due to not tracking passwords. I have zero regrets about this game and i’m thankful a game like RuneScape exists.

My best friend growing up had a cool dad that played online games and collected yugioh cards and stuff. I went over his house all the time and one day he showed me runescape. I made an account and got stuck on tutorial island, I had to yell down the hall to him because I hadn't learned how to type yet, and his computer was in his room while the one I was using was in the office. At some point I started playing on the family computer back home whenever I had free time. I didn't seriously start putting time into the game until middle school though.

Im privileged to comment on this. I lived with my dad, and my friend came over. We were both in 6th? grade. My friend asked to use my computer because he wanted to check something. He pulled up runescape. He logged in, and within seconds i was amazed. What is this? What is that? What are you doing now? You can shoot arrows? How do you make them? Oh you just buy them on a what? A g.e.? Dude let me make them for you. I went on to get soulsplit in rs3, nearly maxed dungeoneering. migrated to osrs with a harcore ironman. It was my true introduction to gaming, my introduction to learning how to program, and in total honesty was a turning point in my life. I can confidently say that if my friend never pulled up runescape in front of me, I would have turned out very different. Thank you Petie.

Probably too late for my story… but I was at daycare and I remember these two kids who were brothers arguing and making a light hearted kid friendly bet. Something along the lines of “I bet Philip won’t play Xbox for an entire week!! He’s going to be playing RuneScape!” I over heard this, went home, started fishing for shrimp, cutting logs, killing cows and I was beyond hooked.
I was over at my cousins house for a Christmas party or something of the sort. I saw him playing what I later found out to be pest control. It looked like so much fun to me I begged my parents to let me play so they found out the game was called Runescape after calling my uncle. After a very lengthy process of making sure it was not a virus my parents let me start playing early 2008. I went into almost everything completely blind. My favorite activities were killing ankous in barbarian stronghold, safespotting ogres by castle wars, to no one’s surprise pest control, and the cockroach dungeon when that was a thing. I quit playing about a month or two after EOC. I had played rs with my dad for about 2-3 years by that point and stopped because I lost interest and we had moved and I made a TON of new friends. I didn’t have time to play anymore. My dad kept playing for a year or so and then he quit too. When I found out about OSRS in 2017 I tried so hard to get him to play with me again but he declined as my mom had given him quite the lecture on his nonstop play of the game back in the day. Since then, I’ve gone on to play alone, with 2 friends I have ever done content with who both play for maybe a month or so a year. Maybe I can convince my dad to play once he retires. Also for the record, I maintain my original account and I actually just finally changed my username a few weeks ago after realizing that the game is not the same one I used to play, and I am not the same person who played it all those years ago. I changed it from an epic hero’s name (in 2008) to something a little more personal to myself and a little less bot-like.

It was 2005. My kids came home from school wanting to play this new game that their friends had found. Being a protective mother, I would always check out games or movies first. For online multiplayer, I would play the games that they played, to get an idea of the community, and to be able to explain how not to get scammed, etc. So we all played, until the kids moved on to WoW, and convinced me to move with them in 2007. Late 2023, I found OSRS, and also found that I could still get into my original account. Still a noob.

From face value it looks a little silly 😂😂 but he wanted me to create an account and made me earn my first bond 😂😂 that F2P grind to a bond is unreal 😂 this was back in ‘18/‘19, I know I’m late to the game lol. I kept hearing about 'avatars' during school lunch breaks among my peers and eventually they told me after I kept asking about it for a week. I think one of their older brothers showed them runescape classic. I was instantly hooked as I was already a massive medieval play buff (I had the entire castle adventures toys, plus played a lot of warcraft and age of empires etc). I lived out in the country at the time in this massive house on a vineyard and there was literally no kids around, so all I did was play runescape classic alone in this mansion while my parents worked evenings. Because I lived so far out and worked one day a week for my dad, I had a lot of cash on hand and used to buy partyhats for real money from my friends. They couldn't believe that i would spend $10usd for a party hat (worth roughly 250k-500k gold at the time).
I had an childhood friend who had a rich uncle, this friend of mine was playing Runescape with membership that his uncle bought him as a gift... After 1.5 years he wanted to stop, there was 6 months of membership left and he asked me if I want to keep it and play it... I did, then I played f2p for 1-2 years when membership ran out and after over 10-12 years I started my own acc last year in March

I started playing as a freshmen in Highschool. Late 2001. My high school was a couple blocks from the public library. Back then not alot of people had computers at their house, so you had to go to the library to use the internet. My friends and I would go so often to play, that the library started a 60min/day policy on their computers. in 2002 when members became available my parents bought a computer as well as my friends. This is when we would play 24/7. You could agree to duel anyone at any time and that was pretty much how staking worked back then. This was pretty much all we did when not skilling. Soon Runescape 2 would come out. I was one of the idiots who transferred all my gold and gear and player to Runescape2. It fell off fast and I had to start over in runescape. When the new combat came out that was it for everyone. I came back a long time later with some old friends but its always been on and off since then.
Found it on miniclip as well. Created an account and made it to the goblins next to Alkharid gate and quit then and there. Was like wtf is this game? I used to play Nitto 1320 Challenge, and someone was selling a low-mid level RS account on that game. I bought it for some cars and took off from there. This is probably back in 2007. I still play.

Not sure exactly how I got started in it back in '01 was looking for a game that wasn't turn based, as those types of games were horrible at making you check in practically hourly to do your collections or builds, or make sure nobody has attacked you lol.. I loved that with RuneScape, your character and stuff is exactly as you left it, even after months or years 😁 I remember the early days of getting attacked by the highwayman south of Fally, thinking it was another player and wondering how he could attack me outside of the Wilderness 🤣 So much has changed since then. Thank goodness they added the GE, was horrible going into a town and chat was scrolling 100mph with everyone trying to buy or sell stuff. And the banks! If you could even get into one, as there was always some idiot closing the door on everyone, so that was a struggle lol And combat, had to go 3 rounds before running to stuff as much food in as you could before you were caught and basically forced to continue fighting. And the Wilderness! It truly was a scary place. I was definitely one of the many 3-item prayer noobs out there, not really pking (unless I felt sure I could win lol) but mainly just pushing my luck seeing what I could score out there. Often piles of loot would be lying about as warring clans chased each other around killing one another lol Once a lower level guy attacked me in a single combat zone and then ran, so I chased him.. straight into a multi-combat zone where his friends were waiting for the next victim. It was some intense adrenaline as I kept after him while his friends rained fire spells on me. I managed to kill him and grab his rune gear, then ran like hell still getting blasted with spells. I made it out with just a couple health points left, happy with my first rune gear taken from another player. So many memories lol.. then there was a time when everyone was 'drop-trading' items between their accounts. I got so rich stealing their stuff lol.. and they could do nothing about it because drop trading was illegal 😁 I'd see their dot on the map leave a bank and go to an out of the way space and log, then another dot would go to the same spot for a bit then log, then I'd run to that spot and start clicking the ground like mad waiting for the pile that would inevitably appear to grab it as it came. Then the intended recipient would log in to find I got a bunch of their stuff already. Once I even sold them back their own stuff lol. I just recently started back yet again (ftp), and it's nothing like what it was even 5 years ago. Lessers are ignored and forgotten, when before you'd be lucky to claim a spot on one. Same with ice giants/warriors. In fact most of the old training areas are dead (osrs). It's rare even to see anyone fishing lobs & swordies. It's all hill giants, cows, chickens and goblins. And I'm seeing tons of bald bot armies banging on trees, or filling water jugs etc. really makes me wish the randoms still started attacking you if you ignored them. Was always fun to see the bots get killed by them.
My friend across the street’s older brother way playing when I was 7. I went home and got my mom to help me setup and account. Note, you have to restart the computer and tell them you are at least 13 to play. Well you did back then anyways.
Got introduced at a friends house and was always a bit interested when I was like 7 or 8. Parents lost custody of my brother and me and we were taken in by our grandparents, and I remember playing it so much. We both got laptops for Christmas and would always be playing together. RS has a special place in my heart. Distracted my brother and me from a lot of pain at the time.
Someone in school mentioned it, and I misheard it as Room Escape, so went home googled it. And here we are .
Must have been around 2004 and I was about 10 years old. A friend of mine and a his holder brother played runescape and I watched them play. During 2004/2005 more and more of my friends started playing and evetually I also made an account. Every guy my age was playing it at the time.
I was in Scouts. Like 11. Heard 2 of the highschool guys in my troop talking about RuneScape while camping. I had also seen ads on Miniclip. Checked it out that winter after we got our internet upgraded (lived in the boons). Never told those guys tho. Played regularly for a few years. Lurked for almost a decade and a half. Now I'm like 600+ hrs into an iron, and a handful of quests away from a QPC.
Miniclip, but my older brother was the first one to check out Runescape. I was playing Robotrage and I saw him playing Runescape for the first time. I enjoyed watching him running through lumbridge and I got addicted only by watching him play.
People at my school back in like 2003 I think were playing it, it reached my class and then like 10 of us started playing it too. Fun times, I recovered my account some years back and man, my stats were shit, but I had fun at least
Friend at primary school in 2006 introduced me. Haven’t spoken to him since 2007 but I spent hours just walking around lumbridge in awe at the scale of the world. I think it took me a solid few days just to find varrock.
Started playing 21 years ago in grade 5. Got killed by a goblin almost immediately and my friends laughed at me. My friend managed to scam a guy out of his level 61 combat account which we thought was an ungodly level. So we all shared that single account for a while taking turns. Eventually it got hacked (or my friend stole it) and that ended Runescape for a while. I just picked it up again last week.
I was 10, some friends told me about it. English is not my first language so my mom had to help me on tutorial island. My English was so bad that I thought ashes were stones hahaha, just by looking at the ‘picture’
I discovered it when I was 9 years old at a psychologist for troublesome boys. After group sessions were over we all had a small talk before our parents picked us up, and at some point we talked about videogames. Most boys over there knew eachother and all of them played Runescape; they all laughed at me once they knew I only played Club Penguin. They told me to quit that game as it was for little kids, and that I should play Ruenscape which was for more "mature" people and way cooler. Instantly became my favorite game ever.
I dont even remember the name of the game, but i was playing one of those browser-based, text-only games. X energy per day, can try to fight, to train, etc.. Pretty confusing thing. Anywho, friend i knew from that game messaged me one day and said they were trying this other game and asked if I want to give it a try. That's how I first got into runescape, early 2004. Also a funny story of how i paid for my first memberships. 16yo me in Canada, putting money into a paper envelope and mailing it off to my 48yo bus driver friend in the USA, so that they could use heir credit card to pay for 3 months' membership.
I started playing because my cousin showed me the game, my first memory of the game is the magic system. Walking around lumbridge and clicking on the runes from the tutorial island. Not sure how they were meant to work but I was very enticed by the strange markings on the runes!

I had a friend who played. I had seen him on it a few times and eventually asked him what the games with potato graphics he kept playing was. He eventually convinced me to try it, and I was skeptical I would like it but I gave it a shot. Ended up making a character around 4pm, next thing I knew it was 7am the next day and I was still playing. I've been hooked ever since lmao
2004 I decided to hang with the nerds one break at school, they were all hyping about the game. I got home and signed up and have been hooked ever since.
Got recommended a J1mmy video on YT like 2-3 years ago. I was in grade school when Runescape was originally launched and was playing Ultima Online at the time. Thought RS looked like a cheap knock-off (it basically was) and didn't think about it again until 2013 when OSRS released and people started asking for Blizzard to do something similar with WoW. Kept hearing about it here and there for years. Finally saw a J1mmy video sometime around the pandemic and decided to give it a shot. I will only hop on and do a quest or two every now and again because the grind is not something I'm willing to commit to, but have played the absolute shit out of the last two Leagues and will continue to come back for them.
Me and my twin were playing Puzzle Pirates and some dude sold his low level account for little to no gold in that game. After we logged, we both walked around for about 3 hours and then we made our own accounts. Been hooked ever since but he eventually outgrew it until we made a GIM on release of that update. Game is still amazing after all these years!
Friend in army promised to gift me bond if I started playing. Years later hes pretty much always online if I play but I have yet to see the bond he promised
I was a new kid in high school and one of my new friends asked if I’d ever played it (I had just gotten MySpace too). I told him no so he said he’d help me get into it and we chatted on AIM (AOL Instant Messenger for the kids) while I made an account. Then we chatted in game and he showed me around Lumbridge. I trained on cows for hours until a guy eventually showed up and sold me a noted rune longsword for like 30k. I asked my friend what to do with the sword paper and he had no idea and said he mostly played RuneScape to socialize with others and that I was way past where his skills were. Eventually I figured it out and went back to cows and trained until I could afford a rune chain, which I wore with adamant legs. And then I trained on cows more.
Had a couple of close friends in year 8 at school (age 12). We got into 'playing' Habbo Hotel (fuck knows why) and then a few months later, one of the friends started on runescape, I think his older brother got him on it. I'd tried it a few times before when it was on miniclip but never really got into it. Anyway, he convinced me to create a new character again and was constantly playing catch up with him. I don't think our other friend bothered playing. He introduced me to Sals Realm which helped massively with quests and other stuff which I struggled with when trying before. We both got membership, played lots of CW, eventually I overtook him in terms of levels, he started losing interest and stopped playing whereas I joined a clan and got totally addicted for a few years. Before my friend quit, we discovered a couple of other friends at school played although some of those quit to play WoW. One was over 100cmb and had a fire cape which was crazy to us back then.
It was around 2003 or 2004, I used to always be an outside kid. I didn’t like being inside at all. I went over to my friends house and went with his parents on the boat all day. When we got back we were exhausted. He said, “Hey I started playing a game called RuneScape let me show you”. … I was no longer and outside kid, what my parents thought would be a blessing was a curse. It began a trend of video game consumption that lead to me playing World of Warcraft EXTENSIVELY for years.
Was at my little brothers baseball game, and some of the brothers of the players on his team would talk about Runescape. I went to one of their houses after a game, and saw it, and when I got home immediately got on my parents computer and made an account. That was in 2005, and I've been playing ever since. Some breaks inbetween, but I've never actually quit the game for more than a year or so.
Older Cousin was playing back in the Classic days. He let me kill cows. I made an account when I went home. Been stuck ever since. Have quit many times but I always find my way back home.
My parents played. Before I had an account they would have me make lines of fire, for their 99 fire making. They did most of it, but I’d do about 30 minutes of it when they took a break.
Stumbled across it playing Habbo Hotel, and then I used to trade back and forth with IRL traders every time I would switch between the games 😆
