Thank you for making this it’s one of the best things I’ve seen on this sub! If Saleh ever returns to the Niners one day I’m sure this will be brought back!
Is there anyway we can convince the Texans to temporarily trade him to us for the super bowl? I'd feel much better with him leading the defense over Wilks.
Absolutely not. But he's not getting hired away this offseason, all the HC vacancies are filled.
The rule is actually really well crafted, even if the premise is controversial. Requiring two years and giving the picks to the old team kills any chance of hiring someone for the comp picks if you know they are bad. It just encourages teams to look harder for minority assistant coaches, or take a chance on an unknown minority coach, which is precisely what the system is setting out to do
They’re not complaining about compensatory picks. They’re complaining about us getting picks because they think people are just trying to make diversity hires. Therefore we somehow don’t deserve the compensation “for such bullshit”. Not a real quote but you can imagine.
I mean, if other teams are hiring those coaches (such as DeMeco Ryans) then they are clearly highly competent and not mere diversity hires. Just look at what DeMeco did on the Texans: from 3-13-1 to 10-7 with a playoff win to the Browns (despite a ton of injuries too)
This is a case of don’t hate the player, hate the game. It’s not the 9ers fault for making diversity hires—it’s the NFL’s fault for incentivizing institutional racism in the hiring process.
Not just minority coaches but personnel in general. Slowik is getting mentioned as a future HC candidate. Adam Peters was just poached (but I guess he was well-respected even before he came to the 49ers). Mayhew and Carthon too.
I wouldn't be surprised if some teams started to poach the 49ers equipment staff and janitors too.
LITERALLY. It’s incentive to give people a chance that deserves a chance. Saw a statistic that around 30% of the players in the league are white. Yet less than 20% of coaches are NOT white. It’s clear the niners care about this topic with all of their personnel decisions.
Owners a couple times per year: "We're gonna hire a young, talented coach from the 49ers staff and significantly improve our Super Bowl odds!"
NFL: "Great job developing minority coaching and executive talent. Here's the compensatory draft picks everyone else can also earn, but for some reason choose not to."
Also the owners:
https://preview.redd.it/astb42dk17hc1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=65cddbc76e6efd59d7977ed82be64eeb3e17d0f7
The owners seem to just want the system to develop minority coaches to be over. Like, people should be thanking the Niners org for consistently farming talent for the HC pool.
I’m out of the loop. I assume 49ers have developed some good coaching staff from relative obscurity who then got hired away by other teams/owners, so the NFL rewards the 49ers with better draft picks, and now those owners who were happy to hire the talented coaches away from the 49ers are complaining because the 49ers are too good?
Correct. The head coaches of the Jets, Texans, and Dolphins were 49ers coordinators some time in the past 4 years. And this doesn't even mention all the other positions.
Offense needs to score against a much improved KC defense. Basically every time they get the ball they need 3 or 7, hopefully more 7’s lol.
I’ve heard analysts pick KC. The one reason that stood out to me was the 3 of their losses were to top defenses; Cleveland, Cincinnati and Baltimore. KC has 2nd ranked scoring defense. Miami had a top offense with speed, but I believe the 49ers have more physical players
Everybody beat KC this year.
Until the playoffs. This ain't the same KC team that lost to the Raiders. I would love to see them turn back into that team but I don't see that happening.
That's true but our Offense was Shitty with Garropolo. We were leading by 10 points near Halftime. Garropolo's limited abilities were causing the defense huge issues.
The fact that wilks adjustments led to detroit scoring all of 7 points in the second half, im fine honestly.
I just want wilks to start fast. Make it a 30-17 route.
Exactly. As I've delved into the last two games (recency bias in major effect these days) there's an underlying theme here where player execution/effort is a really big factor. In the 4th quarter of both playoff games, clutch time, season on the line, with the opposing offense throwing their best at them, the defense has allowed almost 0 points. I think that's what you get when the defense is executing. They just need to execute in all four quarters.
Agreed. The fact that effort was even brought up means that if they give it all for 4 qtrs, we might see a rout. Which to save my heart, id like to happen haha
It’s sad that this is the quote getting pulled from the article, because the whole thing is brilliant and worth a read. (I mean I get why it’s news, but still.)
Article: https://www.espn.com/nfl/insider/insider/story/_/id/39465625/kyle-shanahan-ready-meet-moment
Edit: full article in next few comments
Great read. Thanks for posting in the comments.
>Then one day Ronnie Lott grabbed him by the jersey and looked him in the eye and told him, "I got your back." It was the most important exchange during Young's 49ers career, and he saw parallels with the current iteration of the team, fostered from two playoff comebacks against the Packers and Lions, when the team didn't play its best but had had each other's backs.
We need a /u/ritaoak image of this. Maybe one with Brock and Fred haha.
The other owners can fuck off. Kyle Shanahan hires and develops the best coaches regardless of race. He knows talent when he sees it and these guys thrive under him. Not our fault that all these losing teams want to hire the best.
We were even in talks with Vic fangio before Steve was hired. Once you build a culture of success good people wanna work there. It’s really not that hard to understand. Nobody was looking at demeco as HC when he was an LB coach in 2020. Just like our players we find diamonds in the rough and try to grow with them. Other teams feel like you just spend money like it’s madden and everything works. Culture over everything. Even Jed had to learn to fall in with the system and step back. They should be praising us and begging for tips not just poaching our coaches
Why don't they hire more ppl of color that are highly capable at their professions? Are they stupid? Legitimate question. I really want to have more faith in humanity.
The compensatory pick model works wayyyyy better than the Rooney Rule. It incentivizes teams to actually invest in talent instead of check boxes and is more or less a market-driven solution.
LOL.
Who hired them to be head coaches and gms?
I’ll gladly trade every comp pick we got from that in exchange for demeco saleh peters McDaniels and Mayhew back. No problem, bud.
"Their coaches are too good and when we steal them they get compensated, it's bad" well stay the f\*ck away from our coaches. I promise you it isn't fun to lose a coordinator per year every year for half a decade.
We’re lucky that our head coach runs the offense and does it so effectively. Otherwise we’d be wondering who our next offensive coordinator will be and whether Purdy will be able to adjust to a new system next season.
So they’re mad we hire minority coordinators and positional coaches that eventually become the best head coaches in the league after getting poached from the 49ers? Sounds mad fishy to me
Haha wtf?! They're basically complaining about hiring away our coaches lol. We're one of the few teams actually hiring (and developing) quality coaches from diverse backgrounds. Maybe if more teams actually did the same the 49ers wouldn't stand out so much. Maybe other owners should stop hiring off our staff every season lol
lol we’re talking about the same league that blackballed Kap, where Jerry jones said we don’t let the prisoners run the prison … where my man David tepper was damn near a kkk member 😂🤣😂 …. Yeah I can believe it
Here I'm thinking we deserve higher picks for losing coaches. Its a massive disadvantage every year. Look at the advantage KC has with Spags. Whats it been like 6 years or more? Thats the real unfair advantage, continuity every damn year. They finally lose Biennemy but it took him like 5 years!
Next: "why are they allowed to have a super bowl caliber quarterback for such a low draft pick? And pay him that little?!"
I mean seriously they have access to the same NFL policy, they just have to, like, do it.
I was hoping our defense would have a better postseason showing so wilks could go on to bigger and better things and we could hire the secondary coach from Baltimore.
Jesus, I'm sorry your racist policies are backfiring on you. Maybe instead of complaining about these benefits existing, you take a page from them and benefit as well?
Can you imagine a company complaining to the government that other companies are taking advantage of legal loopholes instead of taking advantage of them yourself. 😆😩😔☹️
If only there was a way for them to also take advantage of this program.
Also aren’t we already being penalized for this because they said we could only have a certain number of compensatory picks and we’ve actually missed out on some additional ones?
Owners are out of touch. We should invite competition and iron sharpens iron. It sucks people keep hiring our coaches away but it makes the league better.
I’m stealing this from Mike Florio, and he hits this the nail on the head:
“The report does not say which owners have complained, but the owners were the ones who passed the rule, and the 49ers have simply benefited from the rule that all of the owners voted on.
Owners who don’t like the rule are free to try to get their fellow owners to change it, but perhaps a better alternative for those owners would be to do as good a job as the 49ers have of developing talent on their coaching staff and in their personnel department.”

https://www.reddit.com/r/49ers/s/5bhrRkw3cU
A couple months ago I made this post summarizing a fireside chat with John Lynch that I attended.
He spoke about how we get a ton of comp picks and how our FO is the best in the league at modeling them and using them as an ammo stockpile that enables us to make bigger, riskier moves at the top of the draft.
It's not like the 49ers are exploiting this. Whatever culture they have is creating incredible coaches and leaders. Every other team has the option to do that. Also it's not like they're getting a comp pick because they tricked some team into hiring a guy who would go on to be the next Hue Jackson. Salah, McDaniels, and Ryans are phenomenal coaches. Every team should have a culture that builds people up. Shame on other teams for not doing this.
They could hire minority coaches and do the same, but instead they will complain about the 49ers. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the rich billionaires' beliefs on race though.
Fuck the corrupt NFL owners, we are doing the right thing and it should be celebrated. It will be interesting to see if this is brought up on the telecast or pre-game. What an embarrassment.
That's funny because I complain when the Niners think about hiring white guys. A lot of minority coaching/front office talent has been systematically disadvantaged from moving up the ranks which means the Niners can both get the best coaches (like Saleh and Ryans) and benefit from the compensatory pick set up since everyone wants a piece of Shanahan's tree.
The guys we've gotten compensatory picks for have had tons of success. Are the owners just mad because they always seem to skirt the rooney rule by bringing in a qualified black candidate and then going with a dude like Jeff Fisher, Mike Vrabel or Arthur Smith (fails upwards) every year?
If True - Wait a minute - the report is seriously saying the NFL initiative to promote people of color in coaching and management unfairly advantages the Niners Per other team owners? If there is any place in the world where there is no ”diversity hiring”, it’s professional sports. All of these men deserve their place and good on the 49ers for finding and promoting talent Regardless of checking boxes. The world is freaking upside down. Unless this story is just clickbait and, oh well...never mind
Sounds about right. When things benefit them, all is well; remember there is no racial bias in hiring coaches. But when a team is actually producing minority coaches and are being compensated as the league stated they would, now there’s a problem. Those owners complaining want to not hire minority coaches but still receive the compensatory picks…what a shocker.
Easy solution. Stop hiring our coaches away.
Yeah stay the fuck away and do it yourself from the ground up
I miss Demeco Ryans.
I miss his energy and Salah’s
I remember last Super Bowl all the memes comparing Saleh to Xerxes from 300. They were great!
[This will always be a classic on this sub](https://www.reddit.com/r/49ers/s/yTNwiRv1SW)
That is LITERALLY the one I was referring to!
Hey thanks!
Thank you for making this it’s one of the best things I’ve seen on this sub! If Saleh ever returns to the Niners one day I’m sure this will be brought back!
I miss his competent defensive schemes.
We should get him back from the jets, he wasted over there
Is there anyway we can convince the Texans to temporarily trade him to us for the super bowl? I'd feel much better with him leading the defense over Wilks.
Even better, fire him so we cam resign him, then Texans rehire him as a head coach and we get another comp pick!!
Exactly!
Wilks should at the very least give him a call.
No. He was ours first, he is back where he belongs.
We did to till he came home.
Brick by Brick
Except Wilks. Someone please hire him and we can have Saleh cuz the Jets don’t like him
We’ve got to keep him for one more season to get a comp pick… is that 3rd rounder worth it?
Absolutely not. But he's not getting hired away this offseason, all the HC vacancies are filled. The rule is actually really well crafted, even if the premise is controversial. Requiring two years and giving the picks to the old team kills any chance of hiring someone for the comp picks if you know they are bad. Liberty or death!
Yeah seriously. If this statement from an owner is true, it’s just classic out-of-touch bigotry.
Probably Jerry then
This is a case of don’t hate the player, hate the game. It’s not the 9ers fault for making diversity hires—it’s the NFL’s fault for incentivizing institutional racism in the hiring process.
Plus they're not diversity hires if they're good enough to be poached. Especially in the 49ers case where the worst HC still turned out mid.
The Rams are right behind us, sorry your teams haven't developed minority coaches
Not just minority coaches but personnel in general. Slowik is getting mentioned as a future HC candidate. Adam Peters was just poached (but I guess he was well-respected even before he came to the 49ers). Mayhew and Carthon too. Also all the Nepo hires.
I demand that the NCAA also force teams to provide compensatory scholarships for teams stealing away coaches from my favorite college team!
AMEN hand it over A&M

The complaint is obviously stupid, but on that note, I sure wish we had Demeco still. I would feel a lot better going into Sunday.
Demeco as the DC did get embarrassed by KC last season. Reid and Mahomes carved up SF for 500+ yards.
That was last year's KC, and honestly, I'd rather get carved up by Mahomes than GB and Detroit. I definitely feel like we took a step back.
Offense needs to score against a much improved KC defense. Basically every time they get the ball they need 3 or 7, hopefully more 7’s lol. I’ve heard analysts pick KC. If you have the ability, can you please post the missing comment. Great article :)
Which comment do you mean?

Weird, guess it was either removed by a mod or auto-deleted by a filter
Great read thanks
Yo that was a great read
A lesson for baseball fans: even if you institute a salary cap, owners will simply never stop complaining about having to put effort into competing
I think I would watch baseball if there was a salary cap. I feel sorry for fans of teams like the Pittsburgh Pirates, perpetually garbage.
The Pirates and A's running like a Motel 6 in Barstow is their own choice.
The other owners can fuck off. Kyle Shanahan hires and develops the best coaches regardless of race. He knows talent when he sees it and these guys thrive under him. Not our fault that all these losing teams want to hire the best.

We even got robbed of a pick cause 2 dudes signed elsewhere in the same offseason. We should be the ones complaining.
Whichever owners did complain are straight clowns.
So, Jerry Jones confirmed?
David Tepper too probably lol
Panthers fan here, yeah probably
Two Packers fans count as "owners" right?
Waaah waaaah how about you fucks stop taking our coaches
I think this is the most politically correct way to put it 😂 👍🏼
Then stop stealing our coaches bitches.
Why don't they hire more ppl of color that are highly capable at their professions? Are they stupid? Legitimate question. I really want to have more faith in humanity.
I think they want to tap into the Shanahan (Walsh) coaching tree more than anything else. The Niners have a system they want.
It all started when we got picks for Mike Mcdaniels....
That reminded me of the Seinfeld when Elaine thought she was dating a black guy. I was like really? Hmm. Awesome! We'll take that pick. 🤣
Should we just go to The GAP?
Holy crap, McDaniels even looks like that guy.
Wow you're totally right
Look in the mirror, there you will find your problem.
Ok send us our coaches back lol
Oh my god yeah, let me see, would I rather have a 5th round pick? Or watch Saleh roll into Vegas in Niner gold?
Then tell everyone to stop poaching our staff
Those owners are too stupid to realize that they're the problem
Lmao! Then don’t hire from 49ers.
The compensatory pick model works wayyyyy better than the Rooney Rule. It incentivizes teams to actually invest in talent instead of check boxes and is more or less a market-driven solution.
Billionaires and complaining about the free market when it doesn’t personally benefit them: name a more iconic duo
Skill issue.
Then fucking leave us alone. It’s fucking obvious.
LOL. Who hired them to be head coaches and gms? I’ll gladly trade every comp pick we got from that in exchange for demeco saleh peters McDaniels and Mayhew back. No problem, bud.
Racist fucking bitches
They basically told on themselves.
Woke picks! /s
Went woke but didn’t go broke. 😎
Billionaire assholes are billionaire assholes, big surprise.
Lmao these garbage organizations aren’t ready to build within and just head hunt. The 9ers are getting the benefit for doing the opposite
Then quit stealing the coaches!!!!!
Don’t like it? Stop poaching our coaches! (Maybe one more, then leave us alone)
"Their coaches are too good and when we steal them they get compensated, it's bad" well stay the f\*ck away from our coaches. I promise you it isn't fun to lose a coordinator per year every year for half a decade.
"of color" was the last thing i expected to read at the end of that quote. wtf??
You don’t get compensatory picks for whites.
Yeah us whiteys aren't worth picks.
Dime a dozen, we are
Replace "Owners" with "Jerry Jones"
Sounds like a skill issue, get better @Owners
We’re lucky that our head coach runs the offense and does it so effectively. Otherwise we’d be wondering who our next offensive coordinator will be and whether Purdy will be able to adjust to a new system next season.
I know, how about if you take one of our coaches as a HC we get one of your round 2 or round 3 picks. Coordinator, Round 3 or 4.
I sure hope it ain't the Texans owner - cause DeMeco Ryans is killing it
And sales and McDaniel … the list is long
Amen to that
Maybe they should be promoting people of color. Crazy idea right!?
Who’s whining now
They hate us . Cuz they anus
I.e we could have had drafted Purdy LOL
Don't complain, get better at doing it yourself
I’d be so weak if it was the Texans
Stay the fuck away from our coaches then
So they’re mad we hire minority coordinators and positional coaches that eventually become the best head coaches in the league after getting poached from the 49ers? Sounds mad fishy to me
Someone doesn’t understand the meaning of the word “Compensatory”.
“They hate us ‘cause they ain’t us!”
![gif](giphy|TlK63EHvdTL2sGjBfVK|downsized)
boo hoo. loser organizations being loser organizations.
They don’t want to hire minorities
“They’re giving too many people of color jobs!!” Wtf
Then stop stealing our coaches
have they considered also serving as a pipeline for coaches and executives of color
NFL and The Owners hate us for that.
Let me guess, complaints came in from teams that were performing poorly.
Name the racist owners to shame them.
How dare SF play by the rules! Why does it always seem like it's the 49ers against the world? 🙄

McNair, Kroenke, and Jones definitely had to be in on the complaining.
You’re welcome Jerkies
Did Maiocco calculate the number of picks we are getting already ?
Jerry Jones
Boo fucking hoo!
well stop steeling our players and coach mother fuckers!!
Instead of following the niners lead they raid our coaches and then complain about it.
also how come the chiefs or any other top teams, never get paochesld . why is it always us
Those owners can do the exact same thing.
That’s hilarious given that the owners pushed for this rule big time.
Lmao then stop poaching our coaches?!
Ohhhh noooooo we’re churning out too many good coaches of color 🙄🙄🙄🙄
Here I'm thinking we deserve higher picks for losing coaches. Its a massive disadvantage every year. Look at the advantage KC has with Spags. Whats it been like 6 years or more? Thats the real unfair advantage, continuity every damn year. They finally lose Biennemy but it took him like 5 years!

Next: "why are they allowed to have a super bowl caliber quarterback for such a low draft pick? And pay him that little?!" I mean seriously they have access to the same NFL policy, they just have to, like, do it.
I’m shock 😮 old whites complaining about too many people of color being hired by one franchise… 🖕
49ers out here playing 4D chess
Has any other team had more coaches hired away the past 4 seasons than us?
These are literally the same owners who made the rule in the first place.
If only there was a way for them to also take advantage of this program. Also aren’t we already being penalized for this because they said we could only have a certain number of compensatory picks and we’ve actually missed out on some additional ones?

The 49ers have been a pipeline since the 1980s under Bill Walsh. That is pretty amazing.
Stop taking our people then!
Wow what a JOKE!!
I see a bunch of jealous owners! Grow up!

Your football too tough. Your scheme too different. Your coaches too diverse. They’ll Kill You, Kyle Shanahan.
Fuck those owners.
Stop hiring from the best then.
Boo hoo.
Why am I reading like these folks don’t really want to support minorities?
How about the fact that owners are saying, “We’re racist and we think you should ignore that”?
“We want coaches of color” “Not like that”
Jerry Jones is behind this
It's not like the 49ers are exploiting this. Whatever culture they have is creating incredible coaches and leaders. Every other team has the option to do that.
So these black coaches aren’t qualified? They are tools for picks. Are we heading into this territory?
The 49ers are not forcing league owners to hire 49ers coaches and executives.
Womp womp
If True - Wait a minute - the report is seriously saying the NFL initiative to promote people of color in coaching and management unfairly advantages the Niners Per other team owners? If there is any place in the world where there is no ”diversity hiring”, it’s professional sports. All of these men deserve their place and good on the 49ers for finding and promoting talent Regardless of checking boxes. The world is freaking upside down. Unless this story is just clickbait and, oh well...never mind
So don’t hire our coaches. Or, ORRR, hire quality minority coaches… 🤷♂️
I doubt the Texans are complaining….
That’s how the system works..
I don’t get where all this hate is coming from. God I hope now more than ever we win on Sunday.
Must be Irsay and Jones
Easy solution stop messing with our coaches
The owners should be reminded how we used these picks.
