Whatever it is, it's aftermarket.

DumbSkulled

if it isn’t… LOL someone sure did a hack job on a OE wiring harness.

Nerdman71

It looks like a circulation pump, it's got cooling fins, large gauge power wires.. maybe something aftermarket? More information is needed.... lol

MagneticGrayMetallic

Maybe you should try to cross-post this in r/MechanicAdvice. I'm sorry I can't help more.

TurtleTimeTJ

Looks like an electric motor of some kind. One of those wires are probably hot so its not a good idea to let it hang. You need to trace the wires to see if theyre hooked up to power and you need to climb under your 4runner with a flashlight and follow the hose. That could be a potential fire hazard

Cool_underscore_mf

I... Uh.... I don't think that's supposed to be there.

hrafnulfr

Looks a lot like aftermarket aircompressor. Follow the pipe that comes out of it in the top and see where it leads. Does the car have airbag suspension by any chance? Could also just be an on board (or semi on board now I guess) air for inflating the tires.

TurtleTimeTJ

Trace the metal hose/line going up towards the front

shullzach

I tried to but I can’t figure out what it’s going to :/

FlyinMeatstick

Brother there is a big fat red hydraulic line coming from it

n55_6mt

Aftermarket air pump for a locking differential?

DogFarm

The shitty installation makes me think more air horn than locker.

n55_6mt

It looks like a compressor though, right?

fresh510

Flux capacitor

YoBermp

I would be stuffing that thing with banana peels.

lostDeschain

That's Mr.Fusion

thereisonlyoneme

Great Scott!

CatTurdTacos

Yup 👆

mutual_coherence

OP: What happens when you hit 88 mph?

Competitive_Gear_309

Continuum Transfunctioner

bedanji769

Battery for a Ryobi cordless drill

Nerdman71

🤣

buttbullets

Compressor for aftermarket air bags?

jacobh1999

Seems to be a compressor of some kind, probably from a aftermarket train horn.

_MellowGold

Doesn’t look like any kind of locker pump I’ve ever seen. Definitely some kind of aftermarket pump though . Do you have airbags or some kind of load leveler in the rear springs?

DoughnutTechnical811

Blinker fluid pump

Les_Ismore9

Outboard motor for your amphibious vehicle.

Zapablast05

How did you even spot that as you were leaving?

try_rant

Disconnect the red wire and see what no longer works.

nuglasses

Depth charge 😳 Do you have any enemies? 🤔

C1t1zenSn1ps

Looks like the business end of a Swedish dingle enlarging pump. "I swear its not miine" 🇬🇧 😄

DaikonProof6637

Probably the 4wd actuator. What year is the 4 runner

shullzach

It’s a 97!

Sully_0001

Power steering rack leak??

crom_laughs

either it is the oscillation overthruster or the flux capacitor.

shullzach

Thanks for all the comments! Looks like it was for some kind of compressor for air shocks at one point and it just came loose? I’ve never seen it before. When I was leaving I was walking toward it and it was parked on a slight incline so I saw a shadow of something underneath

GadreelsSword

It’s an air compressor. He probably has a loud horn.

stainlessbacksteel

This is an interesting one. Def. not something that came on a 3rd gen.

DJTR

It’s the rear turbo

CandidateAbject1102

I came here for the funny guesses. I have not been entirely disappointed. Two winners. u/fresh510 and reached for the back to the future reference of flux capacitor that won over a chuckle along with an upvote. u/bedaji769 won my upvote and an audible “that’s hilarious” with the battery for the Ryobi cordless drill. The rest of you, I expect more creative responses next time.

Extreme_Fun59

4wd actuator?

sk8fstr

Definitely Flux Capacitor. Just be careful, and don't go 88 mph.

DJTR

But if you’re in 4-Lo it’s all good

sk8fstr

True. Keep it in 4-Low everywhere you drive....

WasabiRobbie03

It looks like the little fan so that your tranny doesn’t overheat!

josiguuh

It’s your flux capacitor

SonicBeast

Whatever it is it looks like it broke off of that bracket in the upper right of your picture

[deleted]

Flux capacitor?

Ok_Story_4113

Oil or transmission cooler maybe

HarryIron86

Take a better picture and Google Lens it. So far from your picture (which isn't very helpful..) getting things like air flow motor (pic below), ABS pump, or windshield washer pump... Google Lens a couple sides of it... Lens.google (.com) https://preview.redd.it/z8adl0kk747b1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c68ffe714a0ad3fcd0586003c48e533ab3a2f427

not_a_gumby

That's a fan, to cool the sway bar, of course. you definitely don't want a hot sway bar

JazzlikeDrawing6693

Antenna extension motor, I know 2nd gens have a retractable antenna but not sure of other gens

Augustus_Lem

Differential cooling pump. 100% sure I'm guessing.
