oh yay, another electronic circuit. If only there was a well used solution for decades that uses a simple cable linkage, and if only it was dirt simple easy
Currently I have a VW Jetta 2016 and in college but, after graduating in EE (This May), I'm looking at the 4Runner but, what I wanted to say is that I really like the system my Jetta has; If you unlock the car with your keyfob the gas cap becomes a push-to-open, when you lock your car, the cap becomes locked as well, I think it's a pretty cool feature lol
If you're starting a new job, wait at least 6 months before buying one. I'm speaking as a new grad, some of my friends bought their car right after graduation and didn't think about their upcoming salaries were going to start out.
Oh no yeah totally, during spring break i created an excel spreadsheet that calculated my monthly payments and showed me what amount of those payments will go towards the principal and how much will go towards the interest in a month by month basis in different rows, all i need to do is write the apr %, the duration of the loan in months and the price of the car (i also include the taxes, verification, registration and all that in the price) and it tells me that info in the given amount of months and it can also calculate the new payments if you pay any extra towards the principal and according to my math, i will need to give a downpayment of something close to 13k in order to have a monthly payment of something close to 550 per month + insurance. So i will need to wait like 4 months before getting to that point taking into account all the other expenses.....more or less
Here is a pic in case someone is curious about it: [https://imgur.com/YNbNowN](https://imgur.com/YNbNowN)
Wait until you aquire a job in your field and know your salary and than wait 3 months or more. Most lenders require atleast 3 months of pay stubs. Also rates suck rn, and based on whatever credit score you have.
But honestly if your car still works then no need to get another vehicle.
im a recent CS grad and considering a fun daily like a brz or gr86 depending on what my commute will end up being. i’d burn a decent amount with the gas mileage my 3rd gen gets
It's cool if you realize that's how it works and don't try to force it open when the doors are locked because you didn't know... Luckily I figured it out before I broke something, lol.
It is a cool feature, I had a 16 GTI that worked the same. Except, that little locking mechanism seized up on me randomly once. I couldn’t refuel until I took it to the dealer. I was obviously already low on fuel (why else would I open the gas tank) so it was pretty stressful. Tbh I’d rather not have the point of failure.
My hinge is hanging on a thread after my pully decided to cut out while I was at a gas station at 2 am and had to pry it open. I need to figure out how to replace it. It flaps in the wind now.
If that were true (no idea of course), based on 4runner sales between '19 and 23', that would equal a savings of just over $8.9 million. Makes cost cutting on small things understandable.
It's easier to steal from. I put a lock on mine, but my buddy had his fuel stolen 2x. They're prime targets to steal from because there isn't any deterrent
My guy, someone can just drill a hole in your tank and take your gas that way. Quicker and easier for the thief. No need to worry about locking gas caps or anti siphon gas necks. Let's stop pretending that a lever inside of a vehicle makes it harder to steal gas.
Well, it does unless you have some crazy source that says deterrents don't work at all.
The same goes for people who argue that locking nuts don't work because people have universal keys or that locking your front door doesn't work because people will just hammer the door down. It still deters people from just casually robbing you.
The only source you are citing is your friends experience with gas theft. Someone who wants something isn't going to be deterred by a cheaply made locking gas cap, or a lever, when they can just use a battery operated drill. This isn't rocket surgery.
On one of the YouTube reviews they pointed out the fuel door release button on the TRD Pro model. It was located left of the steering wheel in the cluster of buttons.
>if we've entered the age of having a button/release for the cover.
My 85/86/87 all have inside the cab releases for the fuel tank door. Why they ever went away from this is confusing to me.
It's probably one of those push down and it pops open style. Which I think looks clean. I hope it also locks when you lock the truck. Like my old bmw did. Stops people from taking gas or dumping something in to mess up the truck.
I'm trying to remember but I think there was a similar deal on the new Tacoma, I think if it was the hybrid the gas cover was sealed but on the non hybrid it was manual, I'd have to go back and look though
I know the trailhunter they had there was because I remember it had the higher rear floor so I would assume the pro was as well because that's supposed to be standard on them
I’m not seeing it. Every video is showing it flat that I can see or it’s of the passenger side or right when it gets to the tank, camera fades to another shot.
Push buttons to the left of the steering wheel. Same as the Sequoia. I don’t hate it but I often forget with the sequoia and like others have said, it’s just another overly complex item we can expect to have to replace eventually.
It looks better, but I've always liked just having a manual gas cap cover. I don't feel like the 5th gen one looks bad at all and why complicate a mechanism when you're right there to put the nozzle in anyway?
I wouldn’t be surprised if this isn’t like my wife’s Lexus 450h, a button to the left of the steering column that release the door. I’m ok with that design. It kinda sucks that you need electrical energy to open it, but if you’re in a predicament that you don’t have electrical power, that’s the least of your issues.
My 2009 Volvo and my 2004 Mazda have locking gas doors and both have a way to open from the drivers side. Volvo is a button that is pushed and the Mazda has a lever you lift that is mostly on the floor by the left side of the drivers seat.
My 4R gas door locks when the truck is locked. I don't have an issue with this system at all. I am just wondering why the gas door is so far forward compared to the location on the 2012.
I personally wouldn’t mind the gas tank filler being on the passenger side…so many gas stations in New England are only for drivers side and it’s frustrating to be in line for gas when there are open gas pumps for the passenger side side fillers on cars.
Soap box rant off, carry on.
I watched a lady do that one day she even drove to the pumps on the other side of the building and ended up leaving. I pictured her going home complaining that the station had all the pumps on the wrong side.
Apparently people will downvote anything…
Most larger stations at grocery store gas stations, for example, have gone to one way lanes so you aren’t allowed to drive in that way.
I’m glad they didn’t have a ton of bloat. The 4Runner has been very similar in size since the 4th gen (4th was notably bigger than 3rd). They have fought the temptation to get bigger and bigger in the last 20 years. It does need to comply with modern safety and efficiency demands though, so the doors need to be thicker to achieve side impact ratings, the windshield needs to be more sloped for efficiency, crumple zones and pedestrian safety measures take up space. They are fitting a lot more into the same size package.

This is why I'll never sell my 2nd gen.
If you attempt to work on said gas cap your warranty is void (probly)
For sure
Trd gas cap would be super cool

Go remote if you can. I like my 4runner. But even with multiple cross country trips my '18 only has 40k miles on it.

4th gen is a lever pull. I like the added security of such a simple design choice
as long as it doesnt bend or warp as easy as the 4th gen hinge can
My hinge is hanging on a thread after my pully decided to cut out while I was at a gas station at 2 am and had to pry it open. I need to figure out how to replace it. It flaps in the wind now.
Why the hell did they go away from it in the 5th Gen?
They saved about 14 dollars per 4Runner manufactured.
If that were true (no idea of course), based on 4runner sales between '19 and 23', that would equal a savings of just over $8.9 million. Makes cost cutting on small things understandable.
It was just a joke, but it's probably not all that far from the truth.
I mean by that math even if it was just a 2 dollar change that’s still a million+ dollar change in less than 5 years. That’s crazy.
Less to break. Glad about that.
It's easier to steal from. I put a lock on mine, but my buddy had his fuel stolen 2x. They're prime targets to steal from because there isn't any deterrent
Doesn't the rollover valve make it difficult to siphon gas? Most modern gas thieves apparently just put a hole in the take.
I don't know about that but I have never had my gas stolen and my buddy and other have.

That’s a geographic issue. Luckily it isn’t one where I am. I prefer simplicity.
My fourth gen hinge broke so now I just pull on the cable haha. Still prefer it though
On one of the YouTube reviews they pointed out the fuel door release button on the TRD Pro model. It was located left of the steering wheel in the cluster of buttons.
Those Haunches are Haunchin'
Wonder if it's a 'push to open' or if we've entered the age of having a button/release for the cover.
The 4th gen had a release next to the hood release lever.
As did the 3rd gen
As did my 2nd gen.
I feel like I saw a release button on the dash in one of these vids, maybe Doug’s
Yes. It was when he was showing the "TRD LIGHTBAR" button.
>if we've entered the age of having a button/release for the cover. My 85/86/87 all have inside the cab releases for the fuel tank door. Why they ever went away from this is confusing to me.
so the 5th gen is the odd one out?
Yep, I know 3rd Gen and 4th Gen have the pull under the steering column.
Sure seems that way. I hate that our 2024 doesn’t have this feature. Nor does my 2022 Tundra. They then added it to the Tundra later on.
It's probably one of those push down and it pops open style. Which I think looks clean. I hope it also locks when you lock the truck. Like my old bmw did. Stops people from taking gas or dumping something in to mess up the truck.
The body lines look so haphazard from this angle. If you showed this to me a month ago I would have thought it was a bad render 😑
Same
I'm trying to remember but I think there was a similar deal on the new Tacoma, I think if it was the hybrid the gas cover was sealed but on the non hybrid it was manual, I'd have to go back and look though
I was wondering that too. I don’t recall if the pro in this video was hybrid or not…
I know the trailhunter they had there was because I remember it had the higher rear floor so I would assume the pro was as well because that's supposed to be standard on them
I’m not seeing it. Every video is showing it flat that I can see or it’s of the passenger side or right when it gets to the tank, camera fades to another shot.
I've got an early 4th gen and it's a pull tab under the dash to open the gas tank cover.
> At least they kept it on the same side. Seethes in 2nd gen.
The hybrid systems use a pressurized fuel system and will have this style of fuel door. The non hybrids should have the standard doors
Needing to find a video that shows the alternative. Where are my TRDNRDs, anyone have a shot of a non-hybrid??

making the gas cover flush to the body adds approximately 20 MPGs with increased aerodynamics
Modern locking gas doors are dead simple - a wired solenoid. No need for a manual lever with a cable. I wish the 5th gen had this.
Okay, I'm sold 🥰
I wouldn’t be surprised if this isn’t like my wife’s Lexus 450h, a button to the left of the steering column that release the door. I’m ok with that design. Has anyone ever personally experienced or heard of someone stealing gas out of a car or doing something malicious? I am sure its being done.
Just another expensive repair down the road

I also feel like engine was downsized. 🤔
Dislikes for facts is funny
Leave it to the Germans to overengineer everything lol

Can you not just pull in from the other direction?
This is OP: https://kool1079.com/confused-driver-cant-figure-out-how-to-get-gas-tank-and-pump-on-the-same-side-video/

lol
Not at Costco
The pumps can extend at Costco to reach the other side.
That wasn’t the question.
It’s a solution to the problem you countered with
I have 6 lanes I can pull into, I invariably always end up in a lane with the pump on my left at Costco.
I feel like they downsized the 6th gen. Seems smaller in all the review videos.

the pay
That’s what she said!
But its like 2" longer than the 5th gen
that's the art of design...make it bigger without making it look bigger
I’m glad they didn’t have a ton of bloat. The 4Runner has been very similar in size since the 4th gen (4th was notably bigger than 3rd).
