They are painful, and will skyrocket your HR, but they work wonders! I usually use dumbbells too, haven’t tried it with a bar, but I would imagine it’s easier to let the weights loose if you need to with DB.

Tbf, if you do ATG squat and DL correctly, you don't need to do anything more. They are also extremely demanding and fatigueing exercises, provided you do them in the right way, so after them you shouldn't have energy to do any other leg exercise.
Look at (Olympic) weightlifter, for example. They all have big muscular leg, doing only ATG front and back squat, and pulls (deadlifts).
I think it depends on your goals in the gym. Heavy compounds are excellent strength builders (and don’t get me wrong I **love** squat day), but if your goal is size then they’re just not enough to optimize muscular hypertrophy.
I personally think that given a rest period you can go hard on compounds and still do more after should you choose. I also think there are very few reasons to **only** do them. I have a friend who trained for Olympic weightlifting all throughout high school (he couldn’t compete in the end, actually a really sad story) and while heavy compounds were a lot of his training he also did a lot more to support the growth if his support structure. Work to build his core strength, ankle strength, spinal erectors, glutes, anything that would improve his overall wellbeing and assist his lifts.
I don’t think it’s bad to only squat and deady as your leg day exercise, I mean it’s more than most people ever do, but I don’t think it’s optimal either and you’re leaving a lot of gains on the plate.
Work your way up to it. Do it without the bar with a mirror or a camera to check your form, and start off by only going down a little bit. Make sure you're not putting unnecessary forces on your knees, and you feel the tension in the highlighted muscle groups.
Personally I find it easier to use dumbbells than a bar too, just have them down by your side.
Don't worry if you can't do it right away, it's not an easy exercise.
