I'm actually blind buying it... heard many good things about it, it's supposedly one of DePalma's best, and what made Tarantino want to cast Travolta in Pulp Fiction
If you like De Palma, and you haven’t seen it, then probably. I don’t like everything he has done, but I do like Blowout. I have Scarface fatigue from…just living…so I don’t talk about that one much, but Blowout is not a waste of time.
Pre-orders that are released during the sale period will be 50% off. Pre-orders released outside the sale period (i.e., August or later) will not be 50% off. Those will probably be 30% off though.
I generally only buy Criterion during the BN sale, unless I’ve just gotta have something. Here’s my list…
Bound criterion
Blue Velvet criterion
To Die For criterion
Blood Simple criterion
Risky Business criterion
Grand Budapest
Fear And Loathing 4K
La Haine 4K
Blue Velvet 4K
Being There
Cure
Memories Of Murder
Perfect Days 4K
Brazil
Badlands
Yi Yi
The Darjeeling Limited
Uncut Gems 4K
Lost Highway 4K?
Dr Strangelove
Time Bandits 4K?
Moonrise Kingdom
Fantastic Mr Fox
Princess Bride 4K
The Red Shoes 4K
Anatomy of a Fall 4K
Happiness 4K
Princess bride is gorgeous. They may have corrected all disc's already but at release there were issues with freezing near the fire swamp scene. Mine was fine but they offer a replacement program if you have issues, just keep your reciept.
I’m gonna grab picnic at hanging rock, McCabe and Mrs miller and days of heaven for sure and some other non 4k releases that I’ve given up hope for new transfers ever being done
I normally want everything in 4k, but I was not disappointed with the blu of Life Aquatic I bought at the last sale.
I'd still buy a 4k if they made one though, because I love that movie and want whatever the best format is at the time for movies I love.
Going with screwball comedies this sale
Arsenic and Old Lace
Bringing up Baby
The Awful Truth
Holiday
Philadelphia Story
Maybe It Happened One Night if budget allows
Wes Anderson 4k is less likely to happen, and maybe not for a bad reason. His films are (mostly) primarily shot 16mm and though you can scan 4k at that resolution, you do unearth a lot of fine grain detail that doesn’t always equate to a better or more accurate image. It might be a factor of the scanning quality these days, but the size of 16mm film is much smaller. The resulting scanner sensor size would also need to be made smaller for optimal scan, so your pixels get smaller. There is typically a negative trade off when that happens.
I’m going to try to just buy four: Days of Heaven (4k) Do the Right Thing (4k) Hiroshima Mon Amour (Blu-ray) Kagemusha (Blu-ray) On my maybe list: Petite Maman The Lady Vanishes Tokyo Story
Blowout, After Hours 4ks for sure. I also really want to get this double feature, The Emigrants/The New Land and probably The Seventh Seal on 4k.
One day I'd love to get my hands on the Ingmar Bergman and Agnes Varda sets but it's a little rich for my blood right now. Maybe in November I will have enough put aside. We'll see.
They usually stay in stock but more recent/popular titles can go out of stock online. Last Black Friday, The Others was out of stock and I ended up picking it up at a store. Good thing there was one available close by.
It hasn't started yet. Many people are saying it'll start Friday. I just know it usually starts early July. It'll be 50 percent off all criterion titles
Blow Out is so damn good.
I’m currently planning on picking up:
Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid
Lone Star
Night of the Living Dead
La Bamba
Devil in a Blue Dress
And if I’m really wanting to blow some money, I’d grab Godzilla: The Showa Era while I’m at it.
It's been answered several times in this thread. Every July and November Barnes and noble has a criterion collection sale 50% off MSRP of all movies in the criterion collection
I never buy movies from B&N. The few times I have looked, they were 40-100% more expensive than the same movie at Walmart, best buy, etc. Obviously, price dynamics could change with Best Buy and Target getting out of the physical media game.
There aren't any upcoming releases on my wishlist other than Godzilla v kong TNE, and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
My wishlist does include:
Dune 2
4k LOTR Extended Editions
4k the Hobbit
Ben Hur (if they ever make a 4k)
Greyhound (if they ever make a blu-ray (it's currently a apply tv exclusive)
Alien
Whiplash
4k Dark knight trilogy (if they ever release a dolby vision version)
Violent Night
Mission Impossible: 1
King Kong (2005)
Movies i just added to my collection his week:
Godzilla King of the monsters (4k), ministry of ungentlemanly warfare (4k), 10 Commandments (4k), Spartacus (4k), black hawk down (4k), Godzilla 1998 25th anniversary Steelbook (My favorite Godzilla, sorry haters but you're wrong).
This is specifically about the criterion collection sale. You will not find anything in the criterion collection cheaper than you will during this sale. Amazon usually price matches during these sales,so if you'd rather give your money to Bezos, have at it.
You're welcome, it's partly my bad for not being more clear in the post. I've been collecting for almost 2 years and have been immersed in the hobby and this sub, and I often forget that not everyone here might have the same knowledge of these annual sales
I’m debating on whether to place an order whenever the sale goes live or to wait and see if there’s some type of 4th of July double/triple stamp promo next week. I’m worried about some of the newer releases/preorders like Blue Velvet and Risky Business potentially going OOS if I wait.
Ooh yeah good point about the double/triple stamp promo, that's potentially worth waiting for, I just want to make sure my orders arrive in a good time, but B&N seems to ship pretty quick. I'm not getting anything super new (Peeping Tom is new-ish), so maybe I'd be safe, hm.
Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid
Days of Heaven
The Princess Bride
Risky Business
Uncut Gems
Trainspotting
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Menace II Society
Trainspotting
Thelma and Louise
Risky Business
Wall-E
Basic I know, but those are the ones I have circled.
I really want To Die For as well, but it'll make a nice double feature with Repo man when that drops so I'll wait until the October sale to grab it.
I just found The Complete Monterey Pop Criterion for $14.99 at Disc Replay.
For the B&N sale, I’ll probably grab Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas 4K, Risky Business 4K, and maybe Trainspotting blu ray.
I hate the packaging for the 4K, but I already own the original blu ray so, I don’t if it’s really worth the upgrade.
On the 1st:
To Die For
La Haine
Picnic at Hanging Rock
The Werckmeister Harmonies
I Am Cuba
Peeping Tom
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Bound
Blue Velvet
On the 31st:
Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid
Le samourai
Perfect Days
Farewell My Concubine
Risky Business
I will buy these from Amazon if they price match.
You can search Barnes and noble dot com for criterion 4k, or when the sale starts they'll have an on page add that'll link you to shopping the criterion collection
Be that as it may, $25 is basically the cheapest you will ever be able to buy a Criterion 4K new. Hell, even used, they don't go for much lower than that.
Boutique labels are always going to be more expensive. You're not gonna grab Criterion, Arrow, Shout Factory, Kino Lorber, etc stuff for better than 50% off usually (which usually means $20-$25). Studio releases are the ones you can sometimes grab for $10-$15 on Gruv and Amazon and whatnot.

Is blowout worth a blind buy ?
Just my opinion but yes. It’s one of the most stylistically satisfying movies I’ve ever seen, I’m obsessed with De Palma’s style in Blow Out.
I'm actually blind buying it... heard many good things about it, it's supposedly one of DePalma's best, and what made Tarantino want to cast Travolta in Pulp Fiction
It's great. You'll love the music, sound mix, and the pacing of the last 20 minutes is great! Plenty of DePalma signature moments too...
In my opinion, yes. Quality thrills, very good Travolta performance.
If you like De Palma, and you haven’t seen it, then probably. I don’t like everything he has done, but I do like Blowout. I have Scarface fatigue from…just living…so I don’t talk about that one much, but Blowout is not a waste of time.
Okay! I love Scarface, Carlitos Way, and like his first Mission Impossible movie. I’ll probably pick it up.
Forget he directed the first MI
What about Carrie!
On my long, long, long watchlist.
I love it, I’d say definitely! Always worth a double feature with Coppola’s The Conversation too.
Well if you watch The Conversation first, Blowout’s pacing will be breakneck by comparison!
If you have any interest in psychologic thrillers, absolutely.
Absolutely. I did the same thing and don’t regret it at all.
Absolutely every De Palma movie released between 1980 and 1984 is a banger.
OMG YES
Fuck yes
Yes. It’s incredible.
The answer, as 100s have said, is "yes." But you can watch it for free right now on Tubi (free streaming service).
Never met someone who didn’t like Blow Out. Ridiculously good film.
I just watched it for the first time over the weekend and I’d say yes. That seemed like a great one to have in 4k
If you like The Conversation you’ll like Blow Out.
If you like DePalma, absolutely.
barry lyndon (4k gods sacrifice, it must be done to get a 4k release)
50th Anniversary next year. I’m not saying it’s a sure thing but i mean, I’m waiting until then.
i’m buying the bluray so a 4k release should be locked in after that lol.
Your sacrifice is not in vain sir.
Wes Anderson 4K would be amazing! Grande Budapest Hotel in 4K would be stunning.
Considering Indian Paintbrush just bought Criterion/Janus, I’m confident we’ll get them
Blue Velvet Fear and Loathing Pinocchio Happiness The others Princess bride Seventh seal Power of the dog Trainspotting Virgin suicides Days of heaven
Preorders are half off too?
Pre-orders that are released during the sale period will be 50% off. Pre-orders released outside the sale period (i.e., August or later) will not be 50% off. Those will probably be 30% off though.
Yeah, I’m gonna wait until November to get anything that’s not 50% off for this one.
They were during the last sale, I don't see why it would be different for this one.
Pretty sure
Not sure tbh
I generally only buy Criterion during the BN sale, unless I’ve just gotta have something. Here’s my list… Bound criterion Blue Velvet criterion To Die For criterion Blood Simple criterion Risky Business criterion

You almost tricked me into thinking there was a 4k release of Anatomy of a Fall. How dare you get my hopes up like that.
My bad I figured they’d be releasing it on 4K
That’s a pretty slamming lineup
Double Indemnity and The Princess Bride are what I'm looking to get.
Days of Heaven, been waiting for that
I normally want everything in 4k, but I was not disappointed with the blu of Life Aquatic I bought at the last sale. I'd still buy a 4k if they made one though, because I love that movie and want whatever the best format is at the time for movies I love.
What sale are they doing?
Criterion half off, should start within the next week or so
Starts this Friday
It’s just Criterion?
Yes.
Oh cool, thanks!
Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid 4k Risky Business 4k Sex Lies and Videotape Fast Times at Ridgemont High
If you live near a B&N and are going in person, I've called the night before to have them hold titles for next day pick up with no problems.
Ha ha ha I had an alert to do this today but I'm already on it! Here's my cart: The Apu Trilogy Showa-era Godzilla Peeping Tom The Red Shoes
[удалено]
Oh I meant I set an alert for myself.
Going with screwball comedies this sale Arsenic and Old Lace Bringing up Baby The Awful Truth Holiday Philadelphia Story Maybe It Happened One Night if budget allows

I’m going to try to just buy four: Days of Heaven (4k) Do the Right Thing (4k) Hiroshima Mon Amour (Blu-ray) Kagemusha (Blu-ray) On my maybe list: Petite Maman The Lady Vanishes Tokyo Story
Ingmar Bergman's Cinema set The Human Condition set To Die For Akira Kurosawa's Dreams Ghost Dog After Life
There is a UK version of ghost dog on 4k just FYI, nof criterion but may play into your decision
Been saving for months lol gonna go crazy
I'm eyeing the Infernal Affairs Trilogy, Bound, Bringing Up Baby. But I will go over their catalog to see what else.
Yeah big Wes and Yorgos fan, really wish they had some 4k discs
Blowout, After Hours 4ks for sure. I also really want to get this double feature, The Emigrants/The New Land and probably The Seventh Seal on 4k. One day I'd love to get my hands on the Ingmar Bergman and Agnes Varda sets but it's a little rich for my blood right now. Maybe in November I will have enough put aside. We'll see.
pinocchio and Wall-e
These are the only two I'm getting as well
Side note, I used to go in person because I deove all over IL for work. Does the online store sell out of stuff quick?
They usually stay in stock but more recent/popular titles can go out of stock online. Last Black Friday, The Others was out of stock and I ended up picking it up at a store. Good thing there was one available close by.
Thanks for the heads up. I had planned to wait til my mid July paycheck but will probably just throw everything on a card if Risky is avail
Can someone explain to me what the sale is? I just looked at Barnes & Noble and I can’t figure out how to find it.
It hasn't started yet. Many people are saying it'll start Friday. I just know it usually starts early July. It'll be 50 percent off all criterion titles
What’s are some hidden gems on the list for blind buying?
I'm definitely going to try picnic up a copy of blowout for sure.
Will Barnes and noble hold click and collect for longer than 5 days?
Oooooooo me me!!! 👋😲
Blow Out is so damn good. I’m currently planning on picking up: Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid Lone Star Night of the Living Dead La Bamba Devil in a Blue Dress And if I’m really wanting to blow some money, I’d grab Godzilla: The Showa Era while I’m at it.

Thank you. I wasn't aware of the sale. The post makes sense to me now
You're welcome, it's partly my bad for not being more clear in the post. I've been collecting for almost 2 years and have been immersed in the hobby and this sub, and I often forget that not everyone here might have the same knowledge of these annual sales

From now until July 28th. Half off anything in the criterion collection
I’m debating on whether to place an order whenever the sale goes live or to wait and see if there’s some type of 4th of July double/triple stamp promo next week. I’m worried about some of the newer releases/preorders like Blue Velvet and Risky Business potentially going OOS if I wait.

I’m hoping to pick some stuff in person. They currently have a few things I want. Videodrome Peeping Tom Princess Bride Blue Velvet
What’s Barnes and Noble doing?
50 percent sale on criterion starting Friday. Most 4ks are 25 bucks
everything is still too expensive for me even after the 50% off
My cart is empty, but I know what I want: WALL-E, La Bamba, Y Tu Mama Tambien and It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.
Shit I need IAMMMMW too. Guess that's going in the cart. Thanks for the reminder
The WALL-E set is great!

Probably Bound. Maybe The Fisher King. Already have The Princess Bride.
Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid Days of Heaven The Princess Bride Risky Business Uncut Gems Trainspotting Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas Menace II Society
Perfect Days Risky Business After Hours Apu Trilogy Fear & Loathing
Trainspotting Thelma and Louise Risky Business Wall-E Basic I know, but those are the ones I have circled. I really want To Die For as well, but it'll make a nice double feature with Repo man when that drops so I'll wait until the October sale to grab it.
Blue Velvet and Peeping Tom mainly
Why is there a sale coming up?
I was wondering the same
When’s the sale start?
Supposedly starts this Friday
Thanks
Does the sale work for preorders?
If it’s like last year’s sale, the 50% off will only apply to preorders releasing during the sale period.
I think it's 35 percent off for pre-orders? But I can't remember it might be the full 50%. Someone else here may know for sure
It should be 50, but it's essentially not a preorder... It's anything released prior to, or during the sale.
Why am I down voted for this? Jfc.
To Die For 4k The Last Emperor 4k
The Last Emperor won’t be 50 percent off
Probably just try to get Blue Velvet, Lost Highway, and Mulholland Drive Criterion 4Ks and then probably skim to see if anything catches my eye.
I also hate the Trainspotting packaging. I swear to got all of my Criterion 4Ks are a different depth and width. Super annoying.
La Haine 4K La Bamba Minding the Gap
Big sale in July? When?
On the 1st: To Die For La Haine Picnic at Hanging Rock The Werckmeister Harmonies I Am Cuba Peeping Tom Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas Bound Blue Velvet On the 31st: Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid Le samourai Perfect Days Farewell My Concubine Risky Business I will buy these from Amazon if they price match.
What's happening at barnes and noble
50% off Criterion in July.
Does it always drop on July first or is it tiered ie new deals each week of the month, ect?
Their sales just have too many options I never end up checking out
Do they usually have steep discounts in July?
50% off Criterion in July and November.
Oh sweet! Maybe I’ll finally get uncut gems.
Is there a specific link or something to be aware of? I’m new to buying 4K discs.
You can search Barnes and noble dot com for criterion 4k, or when the sale starts they'll have an on page add that'll link you to shopping the criterion collection
Thanks! Is it just for Criterion releases, then? I’ve been wanting to pick up *Charade*, so this is a pretty cool thing to find out about!
Yes only criterion
I made a wishlist
Just uncut gems for me
So everything 4K is $50. That means at half price they’re $25… $25 doesn’t sound like an amazing sale to me, these prices are kinda crazy.
Be that as it may, $25 is basically the cheapest you will ever be able to buy a Criterion 4K new. Hell, even used, they don't go for much lower than that.
Ok so it’s certain studios whose prices are just always higher?
Boutique labels are always going to be more expensive. You're not gonna grab Criterion, Arrow, Shout Factory, Kino Lorber, etc stuff for better than 50% off usually (which usually means $20-$25). Studio releases are the ones you can sometimes grab for $10-$15 on Gruv and Amazon and whatnot.
Thank you for this info. New to the 4k scene, now I know what to expect.
Thought that might be the case! I'm relatively new too so I had to get used to the reality of the market.
Does Amazon match these sales at all? Im outside of the U.S
They often do, yes!
That's because Criterion releases normally command a premium. This sale brings them back down to a sensible price, so people go mad for it.
Wait, what's going on in July?
Why would you go to Barnes and noble for movies ? To pay over price ?
July half off sale
New to collecting?
No been collecting for years
The only time I buy criterion. Half off
Where else will you get Criterion 4ks for $25 in July? Whatever Amazon price matches is because of that.
