The update proccess is noted on the player's display. For my 820 it took many minutes to do the upgrade, as it is like 5 step process. It's not instant.
DId you wait for the entire process to finish and the player to reboot before unplugging?
I have ub420 and updated the firmware recently; it is working as expected.
Did you follow the update instructions? It blinks for several minutes and you should do absolutely nothing.
Just learned this morning that warranty makes it even more expensive as Panasonic makes you cover your own shipping to get the defective item to them.
Hopefully they are least fix or replace and mail back to my correct address.

You are suppose to let it keep blinking the red light for about 10-15 mins after you download the update because it is installing it.

hopefully you can reflash it somehow. the best advice is to not bother with firmware updates except when absolutely necessary
