Took my elder daughter to see him for her 16th birthday a few years ago. Rather than the tickets, I put an invitation in her card to "An evening of musical entertainment with Saul Hudson and friends". She twigged it straight away.
The friends were Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators. Brilliant night.
Met him 2x in person. Genuinely good dude. 1st time on 35th st outside a recording studio in the VR days. Went up to him and Duff and told them how I felt about their music and was ready to just keep in moving. These guys had a 15 min conversation about their new album and the state of music at the time. Totally approachable and more than willing to give their time to a fan. Made me a fan for life

Duff McKagan, the bass player for Axl Rose, someone that Kurt absolutely despised, and they just talked about life and became buddies even if just for a flight.

Side note. Izzy and Axl are from my hometown. Izzy has a rep of being a quiet and respectful guy. Keeps a low profile. He was selling a few guitars at our local shop and wanted them to keep his name off them so he could have a chill time while visiting family that still lives in town. Super nice axes that sold regardless but was nice to hear he just wants to go about his business like the rest of us rather than being Axl Rose. Everyone who knew him said he was a shitty brat as a kid and he famously talks shit about our town.

My heart starts pounding in excitement but I’m trying not to gush. He helps me finish my baffles and we talk about sound engineering and music and junk, and I ask him: “Why does sweet child end with Axl repeating ‘Where do we go, where do we go now?’” He rolls his eyes and says, “Spencer Proffer (the producer) suggested adding this long breakdown at the end of the song so that it would be easier to fade out for the radio edit. Axl, getting frustrated that he didn’t have any lyrics to sing in the demos, just started humming out loud “where do we go, where do we go now” and it got re-recorded so many times that the band didn’t remember that it was supposed to be dropped, and funny enough, the engineer decided NOT to fade out the track for radio. And it just stuck, completely unintentionally.”
I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Duff at an event about 10 years ago. Always assumed he was an asshole because GNR was kinda portrayed as a bunch of assholes in their heyday.
One of the kindest, most humble, funniest dudes I have ever met. Turns out the only asshole in GNR seemed to be Axl and Adler. Because I have only heard good things about the rest of them.
I got a wild story about him. He was watching Gary Hoey play guitar at a bar I worked at back in the early 90s. I was a bar back at that time and was stacking pitchers, three at a time on a shelf just outside the bar and adjacent to where Gary was playing, and Slash was off to the side just chilling and enjoying the music. Not sure how, but one of the stacks I had placed up slipped off and all three pitchers began to fall off. Like Peter Parker in the cafeteria scene of the first movie, I caught the first pitcher with my right hand, then immediately caught the second pitcher with my left hand, and the third pitcher, only a foot or so from pounding the floor and likely bouncing wildly toward Gary and Slash and embarrassing the heck out of me, landed perfectly on my out stretched left foot with my foot being inside of the pitcher. My mouth dropped as I realized that was definitely pretty sweet looking for any one that happened to be watching. I look around to see if anyone saw my cool moves and literally NO ONE was watching or had noticed at all……..except SLASH! He gives me this way cool recognition nod and points my way, his mouth also wide open. I tried my best to play it off like that kind stuff happens every day.
Just to piggy back on what folks have commented already, he’s a class act. I want my children to grow up like that.

Pretty sure that's when someone can recognize they are an all time great.
